1.83Ghz v 2Ghz

Hello people,
To date I have always been a Microsoft user. However with the release of the new Macbooks, and given I am in need of a laptop upgrade, I've been tempted! I can't deny the option of having XP on a Mac has helped me make my decision, but anyway!
My question is this. Given I have no real need for a DVD burner on a laptop (as I have a prefectly good desktop I will still use, with amongst other things, a DVD burner), is it worth paying the extra to get a 2Ghz Macbook as opposed to the 1.83Ghz version? I realise I am asking a very subjective question, but I'd be grateful for some opinions. In terms of day to day use (which will mainly be Word processing, internet, watching DVDs, photo viewing and the odd game perhaps) will the extra power offer me any real benefit for the extra £100 or so that it will cost.
Thank you in advance.

For the sort of activities you describe, you probably
won't benefit noticeably over the 1.83 GHz model with
the 2.0 GHz model, particularly if you don't need the
DVD burner.
I'm a writer that also does some audio work, and the
DVD burner wasn't very important to me since I
transfer everything to my desktop for burning.
However, I couldn't shake the belief that every
computer should be able to burn a DVD these days,
even if it's going to be a rare activity, so I went
ahead and picked up the 2.0 GHz model.
A 1.83 GHz dual-core is no slouch. If word processing
and photo-viewing is your thing, then I'd say the
$1099 model is the best choice.
Thank you for the reply. Just a quick question... if I was to install 'Bonjour' on my Windows desktop which is equipped with wireless, would it be a doddle to move files between the two in the event that I did want to burn anything to DVD?

Just in general which one do you think is the better value and which would you prefer. The price diference as you know is around $500 plus tax. Do you think what you get with the upgraded version is worth the price (2Ghz, 1gig Ram, and 100GB Hard Drive? I plan on running normal mac programs as well as boot camp with such programs as audtion, photoshop, etc. I am planning on using about 15g for boot camp with the buffer bringing it to 20G. What does everyone think?
    Cheers!

I just bought two 1GB Corsair "Value Select" SO-DIMMs. One was inadequate and caused repeated hardware resets. The other one appears to be OK, but I'm loathe to keep it and plan to return them and buy from a source with a better reputation, even if their prices are higher. (But $300 for a 1GB SO-DIMM from Apple? What is it, solid gold?)
By the way, I should add that Apple's hardware test, which I ran three times, showed no trouble with this RAM, but MemTestOSX (http://memtestosx.org/) quickly led to the resets whenever the marginal SO-DIMM was installed.
Search the MacBook Pro forums for Corsair and you'll find (as I should have before buying) that my experience was shared among several people.

  • Upgrading of 3000 N100's processor

    Hi,
I have a 3000 N100 (076859G) laptop and don't want to buy a new laptop at the moment since I still really enjoy this one. I have allrerady upgraded the hard disk which is now a 7200t/m HDD, 250 G and which works just very fine and fast. I have allready upgraded the memory to 2G too. I'm running Win XP SP3 and I don't think to install Vista or 7.
    The questions are :
    - I would like to upgrade the processor now, but don't know wich one to choose for my mobo ?
    - Will this upgrade cause an overheat and force the processor's/system's fan(s) to run at max speed and thus become very noisy ?
    - Does it worth doing it in terms of performance ?
    - If I can upgrade to a processor with 64bits technology, will I be able to run some 64bits OS on my N100 ?
Here are some technical details about my system config :
    - Laptop product number : 076859G
    - Chipset : Intel i945PM
    - Processor :  Intel Core Duo T2400 @ 1833 MHz
    - Processor Socket/Slot : U2E1
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards

    Welcome Egg!
I upgraded with the T5600, no overheating, performance improved
over my original T2060. Worth it for me, as I got the cpu on eBay
for about $50 USD. You have a faster cpu to start with, so you may
see less of a speed boost.
64 bit can be used, but may be more problematic with drivers.
I don't see the advantage with only 2 GB ram, but you may have
    a reason.
Here is the cpu list from the Hardware and Maintenance Manual:
    CPUS:
    Intel Core Solo processor T1300(1.6GHz)
    Intel Celeron M 420(1.6GHz),
    Celeron M 430(1.73GHz)
    Intel Pentium dual-core processor T2060(1.6GHz)
    Intel Core Duo processor T2250(1.73GHz),
    T2350(1.86GHz),
     T2300(1.66GHz),
     2300E(1.66GHz),
    T2400(1.83GHz),
    T2500(2GHz)
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5200(1.6GHz),
     T5500(1.66GHz),
    T5600(1.83GHz),
     T7200(2GHz)
As you can see, a T7200 is possible, and others on the forum
    have said it works good.

  • Can a Mini use a hard disk from a Macbook and boot OK?

My Macbook in the shop getting repaired for the RSD problem. I pulled the 120GB HD I had installed and put in the factory HD when I sent it out.
I needed a computer so I bought a Mac Mini with only a 80GB HD. My question is; can I swap out the HD and let the mini use the OS X install from the Macbook and boot up properly or is it like windows and the version of the OS is slightly different due to the hardware?
    MacMini 1.83GHz & Macbook 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello,
I've done this with the PowerPC Macs (PowerPC to PowerPC), and it's always worked fine.
You should be fine doing this as well. Just don't install it in a PowerPC system since it's an Intel version of OS X.
But, you'll be fine. Understand that you'll likely void the warranty on the Mac Mini, and that removing the drive will be a lot more work than it was in the MacBook.
    But, it will work fine.
If you don't want to risk the warranty on the Mini, then you may want to just get an external FireWire or USB 2.0 portable hard drive enclosure to install the hard drive in (make sure it's Serial-ATA). And, then you can either boot from the external drive, or use that drive to clone it to your Mini's internal drive.
    I hope this helps.

  • Satellite P100-240 CPU Replacement - which CPU Can I Install?

Does anyone know what CPU can I install in my P100-240? Any core 2 duo?
Please don't tell me about warranty.I know I will lose it.
    Many thanks.

    Hi
The notebook was equipped with the Intel Core Duo (Yonah) CPU T2400 1.83GHz
So I presume these CPUs could be compatible:
    Intel Core Duo
    T2300(1.66GHz)
    T2400(1.83GHz),
    T2500 (2GHz),
    T2600(2.16Gz) ,
    T2700(2.33Gz)
Theoretically you could insert an T2700 (2.33Gz) but nobody can say if the notebook will run stable and properly after such upgrade. The stronger CPU produces more heat and the notebook could overheat after the upgrade. So its really not advisable to upgrade the CPU!!!
.and you know that you will loose the warranty ;)

  • Want to change T2080 core duo to a 64bit in a 0768-A78

My current cpu is a T2080 and I want to change to 64 bit cpu (and faster processor). I have the 945GM chipset with 82802 ICH7-M/U southbrige according to CPUZ-ID.
So far I can't find any threads that make me confident a T7100 or such will work.
    Anyone actually changed to64bit cpu?

Service manual fo N100 lists these C2Duos:
    Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    T5200(1.6GHz),
     T5500(1.66GHz),
    T5600(1.83GHz),
    ** T7200(2GHz)**
Others MAY work. I find my T5600 to be a nice balance
of speed vs price paid. ($60 US on eBay.)
I have tried 64 bit Linux Mint, and Win 7.

  • Better deal? 1.83ghz C2D or 2ghz CD

I have the choice between these two models:
Refurbished MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo $899
w/ superdrive (though I will probably rarely burn dvds)
Refurbished MacBook 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo $949
    w/o superdrive
All other specs are the same. Is it better to have the core 2 duo with less processing speed or vice versa? Which is the better deal?

That would be a good question, how much faster is the 1.8ghz CD2 than the 2.0 CD. There isn't much difference in the speed (1.8 vs 2.0) - but the difference lies in the architecture of the chips. The 1.8 CD2 might be just as fast, if not slightly faster than the 2.0 CD because of the architecture.
The other thing to know is, the CD2's have the ability to upgrade to 802.11n if you buy the Airport Express Base Station. The CD's are not able to do this.
    Hope this helps.

  • 1.83GHz MacBook Pro

I am the proud owner of a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro. I bought it almost exactly 60 days ago, and despite it's heat issues it's been great. Not only did it work great, it was wonderful knowing that I had one of the best laptops on the market. And while that still may be true, my model is now a bit out of date. Not too long ago, the 1.83GHz model was removed from the line to be updated to a 2GHz CPU. Essentially, it was revised.
While talking to a friend via iChat tonight, he mentioned that when Apple does minor revisions, such as the 1.83GHz jump to 2GHz, Apple will update your system for no charge. Is this true? Would Apple do this for the 1.83GHz MBPs? If so, how should I go to get mine upgraded? Should I simply call my AppleCare, or do I need to drive a province over to the Apple Store? If anyone knows any information on this it would be very helpful...
And if they won't do this, why wouldn't they? Apple seems to update their products very often, a bit too often if you ask me. Not offering an upgrade to those customers who would like it is like a software developer moving his software from version 1.5.2 to 1.5.3 with only minor security fixes, and charging current users over again. If it's not possible that would definatly be a nice thing to have.

Well, sorry but my opinion is that your friend is mistaken. Unfortunately, you can't call up Apple whenever they revise their product line and have them replace the machine that you just bought 1 day/week/month/year ago (unless its within the 14-day return period and you bring it back for a refund and then turn around and buy a revised one), unless its defective and you have it exchanged and luckily receive a newer computer. Buying a computer is just like buying a car or any other type of appliance or any other product for that matter. Technology is constantly evolving and it would be unfair to expect Apple or any other computer manufacturer to constantly exchange old hardware for new hardware (for free) as it is released/revised. Have you ever bought something and then been able to exchange it when its upgrade came along? Besides, the speed jump is ever-so-slight and unless you're doing CPU-intensive tasks, the difference will be negligable.
Just be glad that we're at 1.83GHz clocks and not at 1.67. Remember, the 1.83GHz speed itself was a last-second gift from Apple so we should all be thankful for that!

  • Imac 17" core 2 duo 1.83Ghz motherboard upgrade

My imac 17" core 2 duo 1.83Ghz motherboard happened video problem, I am going to buy a 17" core 2 duo 2Ghz motherboard from ebay to upgrade/replace the bad motherboard. The bad motherboard parts is 280-1919-A, the 2Ghz motherboard parts is 280-2052-A. I am no sure if the 2Ghz motherboard can use 1.83Ghz motherboard fan, heatsink, power supply etc.
    Anybody can give me advice?

    Hi kersa0608
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First off, buying a used or reconditioned logic board off e-bay sounds very risky.
Second there is no guaranty that it will even fit or work in that educational 17" model, besides the Graphic's Chip, the Optical Drives and Airport cards just to mention two biggies are also different.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP28
Lastly I'm not sure how much that Logic Board is going to cost you, but if anything else doesn't fit or something happens to another component it could end up costing you more to patch up that 5 year old 17" iMac than the price of a new or refurbished 21.5".

  • 1.83GHz MacBook & Sims 2?

I am after getting a 1.83GHz MacBook but would like to find out whether Sims 2 will work on it at all, as it requires G4 or G5 and the MacBook has an Intel Core 2 Duo.
I did a quick search to find that it wouldn't but there was a fix on the horizon, any news on that front?
I want to get a macbook but no point if Sims doesn't work on it

This is straight from the back of my box:
Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later
    PowerPC G4/G5 or Intel Chipset
    1.2GHZ or higher
    256MB RAM or higher
    3GB or more free space
    Video Card (ATI) Raedon 9000
    Video Card (nVidia) GeForce FX5200
    32MB VRAM or higher
I think I ordered it online from Apple, possibly Amazon. It was on sale right before Christmas. If I'm not mistaken the online store didn't list the Intel under system requirements. I think I ordered it just planning on playing under Rosetta, but was pleasantly suprised when I opened the box.

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries

  • Problem with New Macbook 2.2ghz and 2x2gb Sodimm Ram 800mhz

Hi..I bought the newest Macbook white 2.2ghz Santa Rosa and I wanted to upgrade default ram up to 4 gb 800mhz.
I bought 2 Sodimm Adata..I tried to put them toghether inside my macbook and it doesn't boot.I click power button but it only turns on sleep led.
So I tried to put one new ram with an old 512mb ram and macbook works well with 2.5gb at 667 mhz.
I thought one new ram was difected and I tried to put the other new 2gb ram instead the other one and macbook works fine againg at 2.5gb 667mhz.
Why the newest macbook doesn't work with 2x2gb Sodimm 800mhz?Anyone had the same problem? It's not fault of new sodimm rams..i'm sure it's is macbook!
DO you think with the next Leopard Update 10.5.2 they'll fix this problem?

    Thanks..
    Last 2 questions..
Did you find any speed difference between 2.5gb and 4 gb ram?
Didn't even try it out besides seeing if the configurations were recognized. Frankly I don't think there's much of a difference between 2GB and 4GB unless there are tons of open applications.
I'll buy this ram..do you think they'll work fine in my Santa Rosa mb?
    2GB Kingston PC5300 SODIMM-DDR2 667
This is what they recommend as Apple-specific memory. What you wrote sounds like it should work.

Some people have said to stay away from their ValueRAM series because the long term reliability might not be as good. Of course they have a "lifetime warranty" but that means going through the trouble of getting it replaced.

You really have to mess with the resoluton, espescially the refresh rate, as it varies from projector to projector, monitor to monitor. Even within the same brand! Because so many manufacturers are trying so many different things to become the next cool kid on the block, and the way the formats are being configured that's now part of the game.
That's why so many professionally produced corporate shows hire a dedicated projectionist for the video presentations. Too many bugs in the honey.
Refresh & sesolution are the first things to look at.
Just so you know that colors in PowerPoint PC, and PowerPoint Mac, don't exactly match... go figure.
I forgot to mention another thing, sometimes it's the projector that needs to be tweaked.

  • CPU only clocks up to 1.2GHz on full load

I use Boot Camp on my Late 2007 17" 2.4GHz Macbook Pro, with fresh installs of Snow Leopard and Windows 7. I've used Windows 7 to diagnose my problem. I'm using Core Temp to retrieve my CPU performance info and Prime95 to stress-test the hardware.
    Definite Problem:
My CPU will not operate at any higher than 1.2GHz under full load. It idles at 800MHz at 42 degrees Celsius, and warms up to 62 degrees Celsius under full load. I expect it to operate at 2.4GHz like it once did.
    Best-Guess Diagnosis:
My computer has no battery (it physically expanded beyond functional size), and I read somewhere that the computer is designed to throttle down when no battery is present in order to prevent the computer from drawing more power than is available to it via the 85 watt charger.
    Best-Guess Solutions:
    1) If my diagnosis is correct, replacing the battery should undo the throttling cap. This is not ideal as it is not a long-term solution (batteries can continue to explode in the future).
    2) I'd like to modify my computer's configuration to release the throttling cap/force full frequency. If possible, this would be the ideal long-term solution. This may not be possible if the charger is indeed bottlenecking my CPU's performance.
I'm looking for insight into my best-guess solutions or new solutions. Thanks for taking time to check out my inquiry.

Please carefully read and do both iMac SMC and PRAM reset s, if you need to do each 2X. It also may help to restart in Safe Mode to clear some caches.

  • Early 2011 2GHz Macbook pro distorted blue screen then wont boot, 3 times in last 2 weeks

I have an early 2011, 2GHz macbook pro (15' model with ati radeon graphics). It was running fine for the last two years. Over the last couple of weeks, following things happen:
    1. I was running on bootcamp windows, browsing and some flash content was open, suddenly distorted blue stripes appear and it froze. Force shut down using power button, turn on again and it wont boot on windows or mac, or recovery partition or from the dvd. Tried for about 4 hours, after nvram, pram reset, it was able to safe boot, then run disk utility to verify and repair the disk, it said that there were problems with hard drive and fixed, then booted normally.
    2. I thought that the problem might be because I was on windows, so took a back up of the windows drive, erased it and installed windows 8 using bootcamp. It ran well for an week. After that, once I connected it with the tv using HDMI to watch a video, after I disconnected it, the screen was garbled over the windows start screen, but I was able to command restart normally. After restart, it wont boot to windows or mac.
    3. After several hours of trying, i was able to boot using the dvd this time, it said it 'can not install mac on the hard drive', erased the hard drive and it was able to install the os (snow leopard). After completing install, logged in to app store to download previously purchased mountain lion. Then ran it to upgrade the os, after the upgrade was completed, at the point when it prompts for apple id and password to set up icloud, it again froze with distorted blue screen. Shut down forcefully. Then turn on again and it wont boot. After the white screen and the sound, it shows the apple logo and spinning wheel for a while, then a bright white screen and nothing happens.
Can anybody help reading the symptoms?

I have the Early 2011 2GHz Macbook Pro and I have the same problem too.
I switched out the logicboard a month ago and today the graphics just went distorted.
Any solutions? Now I'm thinking it is the Graphics Card.
