1.8Ghz & Dual 2.0Ghz Logic Boards/Power Supply

I have a perfectly fine working 1.8ghz G5. I also have a dual 2.0Ghz G5. However, the dual doesn't power up. I'm pretty sure it's the power supply. But, I'm not positive.
My question is. Is it possible to put the dual 2.0 logic board into my 1.8ghz machine? The inside of the cases look very similar. Or is there a way to test the logic board of the 2.0 before I take everything apart?
Thanks..

The CPU speed of a PowerMac G5 is always 2x the bus speed or less. Thus, with the 900 MHz bus speed of the 1.8 GHz motherboard, your 2.0 GHz CPUs would clock down to 1.8 GHz at best.

  • Dual G5 Logic board/power supply dilemma

I have a (late 2005) dual 2.3 that has been dropped 3 Times!
It is on it's third power supply. The repair center that was in fault is now replacing the case and logic board. My questions:
Does the fact that it has/had a faulty logic board be contributing to the power supply failure?
Should I just be done with this machine and move on once the new logic board is installed?
I'm skeptical to a unit that has been thru so much abuse, but at the same time doesn't new logic board & case = new computer?
    Your thoughts
    Thanks

Hi! I'm surprised it survived the first fall let alone the second and third. The g forces could have damaged both the MB and the PS and if a repair center had dropped it I'd be inclined to want a replacement. Tom

  • Plugging in redundant on-board power supply

    HI,
Is it possible for me to plug in and turn on on-board redundant power supply for a 4402 WLC that is already online and in production without any disruption to Wireless users and APs attached to that same controller?
    Thanks, Pat.

That power supply should be hot swappable.  But as with anything having to do with power, you are better served by taking the system down.  that way you can avoid any arcing.

  • Logic board replacements: supply shortage!

I've seen a lot of threads on here encouraging anyone with a whining MBP to send it in for no-questions-asked logic board replacement, so I wanted to post a quick caveat...
My MBP has been in the repair queue at the Apple Store for a week and a half, and they're still waiting on shipments of logic boards; from what AppleCare can tell, it looks like supplies are hugely diminshed at this point, and the only stock of MPB logic boards is what the individual Apple Stores have on-hand.
Maybe I'm just unlucky, but chances are that if you're hoping for a one-day turnaround in a shiny yellow DHL box to stop the whine, you'll have to wait a bit longer...

My condition with regards to work isn't quite as bad as yours, however I did realize that as soon as I dropped the machine off I had forgotten to commit my last day and a half of work back to Subversion, so I've been just idly touching up things here and there as I don't want to waste a whole day and a half re-implementing something that's stuck on a 2.5" chunk of steel. sigh
Although, if there is a shortage, I'd better get cracking on re-doing that day and a half of work or I'm going to be even further behind on my projects. Thanks for the confirm.
My MBP is CTO, so I'm pretty much screwed on trying to get a replacement before the logic board comes in. I don't think I'll have lost any clients (I've been doing new stuff on my old PB) but I'm definitely not in a comfortable position wrt my existing work. Ah, the perils of computerization.
There is good news: I remember this happening back in the day with the problem-plagued old G3 iBooks, and many of those were just replaced with more recent boards as they became available. Maybe I'll get a 2.16 out of it.

  • IMac G5 (2004) logic board and the repair extension program

    Hi,
I know that there are tons of topics about logic board/power supply troubles witht the first generation G5s, and I'm sorry to start yet another new thread, but I still have some questions about this issue.
I have a first generation iMac G5. Long story short...when I first got it the computer would shut itself off sometimes after I had put it to sleep. When I would try to restart nothing would happen, but usually letting it sit unplugged a while would solve the problem (occasionally when I'd restart a different start up noise would sound and the white light would flash quickly). It happened so randomly, that I just lived with it, blaming the problem on my dorm network, or a power failure. A few days ago I tried to start the computer up and nothing happened (just a VERY faint sound like a clicking or ticking or intermitant humming...definatly electrical sounding). I unplugged it overnight, but the next day still nothing. I decided to go through the troubleshooting steps Apple lists online. The internal power button could not start it up and the second LED does not flash, which according to Apple means the logic board needs replacing. Luckily my serial # is covered by the Repair Extension Program, and I'm bringing my computer in tomorrow morning to be fixed (just in time for back to school).
I have become concerned, while browsing the discussion topics, that this fix may not be permenant. I've read a few posts that claim that they are on their third Logic Boards, and this kind of scares me. My parents bought me the computer (our family's first ever Mac) and did not purchase the AppleCare extended warranty (they had heard how reliable Macs were...hmmm.) I didn't even know that I could purchase AppleCare after-the-fact until it was several months after my 1yr warranty expired. I do appreciate the fact that Apple recognized what seems to be a common problem with this generation of iMacs, but I wonder why they did not contact the owners of these machines to let them know that the problem and repair extension even existed.
So I guess my real question is...Does anyone know if, after this repair Apple will replace the logic board if it dies again? Is there a limit to the number of qualified repairs you can get through this Repair Extension program? Also is there any other Extended warranty type thing I can purchase after my 1yr. warranty is up.
Sorry the post is so long...I'm just scared about the fate of my beloved Mac.
    iMac G5 (2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Oh man, am I actually relieved reading this thread. Just took my baby (iMac G5 first generation) in for repairs today, not knowing what was wrong with it. Luckily my serial numbers are in the range, so I'm crossing my fingers that they're going to cover this.
Brief synopsis of what happened, in case it differs from anyone else's
About a month ago, my iMac started to not wake up from sleep mode. Instead of waking up, it would just shut itself off. This continued for about 2 months, with me thinking nothing of it. Then, instead of shutting itself off, the computer would restart when I attempted to put it to sleep.
Then, last night, I was surfing the net and all of a sudden the power just failed. No noise, no "grey screen", we're talking like a millisecond later the screen was black. I treid unplugging the machine and then plugging it back in while simultaneously holding the power button to reset the PSU and still nothing. At that point it was about 1:30 in the morning, so I just went to bed not wanting to deal with it until the next day. By the time I woke up, there was a distinct smell of electrical components burning (in grade 8 shop class we used to hook up resistors to the voltage generator and crank the juice up until they fried when teach wasn't around, so I distinctly remembered the acrid stench :P)
I opened the back up and did the LED check, and #2 wouldn't even blink. So I took it in and they said they'd have to get back to me and that's where I stand now.
The thing that concerns me is that if some of the components fried that there may be possible damage to the motherboard etc. Luckily I'm not too worried about the hard drive because it did still boot up and all. People that have experience with this, what usually happens with files on your HD after a logic board replacement? Are they usually fine?
The other thing that concerns me is that apple has made no effort to contact me, and it will be 2 years after the purchasing date come November 1, 2006. I'm lucky that I caught this now before it was too late.

  • ISight/Logic Board Mess

i bought a macbook off of craigslist. i replaced basically everything in the macbook short of the cd drive and ram. i never have been able to get the isight to work, so i bought a new one and installed it today. i still cannot get the computer to recognize the isight camera.
as i was putting the macbook together i noticed that a small gold or copper metal piece that is located above the airport card was broken off. it's a metal piece that bends and curves almost giving it a spring-like function....if that makes any sense.
i ran a hardware test to see if i could find the isight problem and i got the error: 4SNS/1/40000000:TBOT. I have tried resetting everything on the computer, i have followed all the support pages that apple has to offer. does anyone have any ideas? could the gold piece have something to do with the error or would that be what is messing with the isight?
obviously my cpu is not under warranty. i'm not sure where to go from here. any suggestions would be appreciated.

    UPDATE:
Apparently the error that I was receiving was fixed when I put the battery back on. Upon retesting, with the battery on, I could not get the error code. However, when I tested without the battery the error came back.
Here is the current situation. The iSight is still not being recognized. I have done everything suggested by apple, this forum and other forums as well. I then reinstalled Leopard...nothing. I also noticed that the battery is not being charged. The weird thing is that when you click the battery, in the top-right-hand-corner of the screen, it states that a battery in not connected...but, when I go to the System Profiler under the Power section it tells me the charge information (in which there is not a charge), cycle count and the condition of the battery. So obviously something is recognizing the battery. The cycle count and condition is good which eliminates that as a problem.
So, here is what I am wondering:
a.) How can the battery be recognized in the System Profiler, but not in the task bar?
b.) If there is a problem in the cables (or whatnot) between the battery and logic board or the iSight camera and logic board, would that show up on a hardware test?
c.) Would starting over by wiping the hard-drive, reinstalling the OS with the original disks I got with the CPU, updating, reinstalling Leopard and updating help? Maybe there is some missing files or drivers?
d.) Could there be a problem with the iSight portion of the display inverter without it interfering with the actual screen portion?
I bought the Macbook used (cheap) and have replaced everything in the computer (logic board, power supply, hard-drive, bluetooth, etc) minus the cd drive and original RAM.

  • Exploding Power Supply

Last week the power supply of my 9 month old Mac Pro exploded with a huge bang. I was really scary. No visual damage, but the whole system is fried.
Let me give you a summary of the history:
first repair - Audio failure --> Logic board replaced
second repair - Mac was dead --> power supply replace
third repair - Mac was dead --> no problems found
fourth repair - Power supply exploded --> Logic board, power supply, etc is going to be replaced.
I called Apple and they want to repair my Mac Pro again. My question to Apple was: "How many times do you have to replace parts until I get a new Mac Pro?".
I'm really sad with the quality of my Mac Pro. It's a great system, but it's not reliable. Luckily I've purchased a MacBook some months ago, but I need my Mac Pro to do my job.

Looks like I'm joining the exploding PSU club. I powered down my Pro after work last night (I usually leave it on all the time) and when I came into the office this morning and pressed the power button I got a flash of bright white light from within the case in the PSU area and a loud snapping noise. The thing that I'm not sure about now is how the repair's going to go. Since I work at a University, I have to take the machine back to Tech Services and I'm just praying that I don't get personnally stuck with the repair bill.
Oh, and I've popped out my 3 data drives -- I'm not sending those to tech services with the machine!

  • What do you think-Power Supply or Logic Board??

I came across a used dual 1.0 GHz MDD G4 that will not start. When the power button is pressed, the power LED will light and then go out. There is no chime and the fans all come on incredibly loud and fast. The logic board has a small red LED between the CPU and RAM slots. Does the red light mean the board is working or good?
I've swapped CPUs and got the same result. If it was a power supply issue, would the fans and logic board power up like they do? I've put a disc in the drive and can hear activity, but nothing ever happens. Also the power supply looks to be smaller than the other MDDs I've used. It also has a large separate fan at the end towards the front/speaker area.
At the same time since the logic board has the red light, it would seem that it's working also. Right? I just need help deciding what to replace next. Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to the front panel issues in general:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/tips/MDDps_mods/MDD_PSMods.html
The front panel with the mirror doors was off. I used a small screw driver to >push the small start up button
Thus you did not disconnect the front panel BOARD. It has it's own connector to the motherboard. If you disconnect it and then short the green lead (Powerup) on the PSU connector to the adjacent black one (GND) you are bypassing the front panel button for booting. Do this only at your own risk if you have a solid electronic experience.

  • Replace 1.6ghz logic board with dual 2.0?

Is it possible to swap out the logic board and cpu of a 1.6ghz G5 with a dual 2.0 logic board and cpu?

i mean staying G5 the entire time, just going from
single 1.6 to dual 2.0 (not dual core).
I think you could do what you're asking about. The CPUs and motherboard go as a pair, so you can't drop a 2.0 GHz CPU into a 1.6 GHz mobo or vice versa. But, replacing the mobo and CPUs as a pair should be OK.
You'll likely also need to replace the power supply. The 1.6 GHz machines had a 450W power supply, and the 2.0 GHz machines had a 600W power supply.
However, you might want to talk with an authorized Apple repair center to see if there are any other technical hurdles that I've not mentioned.

  • Cost of logic board, new & used, Quad and Dual G5, new & used

This will seem a strange question, and difficult to get an answer.  That's why it is being posted here.
How may one find out the cost each of the following, if purchased during July 2007 to August 2008  ?
    •  New logic board for the Quad G5
    •  Used logic board for the Quad G5
    •  New logic board for the Dual G5
    •  Used logic board for the Dual G5
If the exact amount of each isn't known, does anyone have an estimate, or a suggestion on how to get these four cost amounts ?

    Hello,
I am not sure I completely understand what you are asking... The simple thing to do in pricing out each of those 4 parts is to check out ebay... Then add maybe a few hundred dollars to them and you willl get similar pricing from back in 2007 to 2008. A Quad G5 logic board today can be had from anywhere to 100 up to 350.00.. Back in 2007, it was probably around 5-600 dollars..
But, really I would check out ebay and do a search for G5 Quad or Power Mac G5 Quad.. as for the dual G5? Really, those were not even worth it, given their extreme LCS leaking problems, especially the 2004 Dual G5 2.5 which was notorious for leaking.
The Quad is by far the best you can get... and make sure you find one with the SINGLE PUMP as it was the most reliable made and still is. Those came out in the later half of 2006 from April until September of that year, while the dual pumps were in Late 2005 October.

  • Is it OK to Swap a Dual 1.25 Ghz Logic board with a Dual 1 Ghz one?

I need to replace the logic board in my original Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Powermac G4. I found one that came from a Dual 1 Ghz Powermac. The person selling it says that they are identical.
Anyone know if it is alright to install the Dual 1 Ghz logic board with Dual 1.25 Ghz processors (and in the dual 1.25 case)? Thanks.
Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have a dead dual 1.25 MDD. Indications are that the problem is either the logic board or the processors. I have heard the MDDs are known to have more logic board failures that other Macs, so I am thinking about replacing that...
Does anyone know how much could I expect to pay for the just the logic board?

  • What Logic Board fits an iBook G3 900 mhz?

    Hi!
I have an iBook G3 12" 900mhz with a bad logic board. I'm planning to replace it. Can I fit all kinds of dual USB iBook Logic Boards in there?
    Cheers!

    What are the symptoms?
You may know that enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If the iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
You can find the original purchase date of the iBook, by entering its serial number into the box toward the bottom right of Apple's main support page under "About Your Support Coverage."
If it is past the three-year time limit (which it probably is), try calling Apple and ask for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
If the answer from Apple is absolutely, positively, "NO!" and the symptoms are those of the classic logic board failure described on the FAQ page, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

  • Vi driver for Varian Dual HV power supply

hi, I'm looking for a driver for the Varian Dual and/or Multivac HV power supply.
if anybody has it, please let me know...
    thank you
    Andrea Milocco

    Hi Andrea,
unluckily the instrument driver for your Power Supply is not available on NI site.
You can try to search the driver at link: Search Instrument Driver
Otherwise you could ask information about driver directly to the instrument constructor.
But if you know the commands to talk with instrument and if you are using Labview or Measurement Studio or LabWindows/CVI 7.x you can easily create the communication with the Power Supply through the Instrument Assistant.
    Regards.
