1 beep at startup, DRAM refresh failure? Board/RAM problem? Bios needs changing?

I am new to PC building, and I have just put together my first system. So I have everything assembled, system turns on, and I hear 1 short beep. I can go into my motherboard BIOS screen, and even begin installing Windows 7. However, after about 4-5 minutes, the computer will just turn itself off. According to my motherboards beep codes, 1 short beep means a DRAMS refresh failure. Is this RAM related? Now I tried to unhook the ram, switch the spots on the board, and plug it back in, but I got the same problem. Is this perhaps faulty RAM? Or is a motherboard/power supply issue? Here are the components I am using:
Patriot Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model PGS34G1333ELK
MSI H55-GD65 Motherboard
Intel Corei5 750 Processor
eVGA GTS 450 Video Card (01G-P3-1450-TR)
Cooler Master 650W Power Supply ATX 12v
I am new when it comes to all this, so is it possible I need to set ram timing in my BIOS? As far as I know, the 2 ram sticks should be compatible with my motherboard.
Any help would be great, and I can supply more information if need be.

When you the system continues to booting something (e.g. Windows Setup CD), then that one beep is probably a power-good signal or indicates an installed USB device, however, it cannot really be a sign of a critical error, otherwise the system would simply halt when it beeps and you would probably see nothing on the screen at all.
Test with one memory module only and make sure the memory command rate is set to 2T.  If you still experience sudden shut-downs or reboots, please check the CPU Temperature in BIOS Setup (H/W Monitor section) to make sure this is not a simple overheating issue.  Often, such reboots indicate a problem with the PSU.  So, you might want to check that as well.

  • System beeps at startup

Starting today, my system beeps when I start up.  When I power on, I hear approximately 3-4 faint beeps.  It stops after that.  It sounds like it's a system warning beep from the K8N.  The beeping stops after those first 3 or 4 beeps and the system boots up fine.  I'm confused and have no idea what this beep signifies.

    AMI Beep Code

I have 3 short beeps.  What the heck is Base 64k RAM failure?? I'm going to email MSI for tech support here, but as we know, they don't have a perfect record in answering tech emails.  So, in the meantime, I'd really appreciate everyones' help.
    Thank you.

  • I was surfing the net when my computer started emitting double beeps. I shut it down with no problem but I can't find any info on double beeps that did not occur at startup (haven't tried starting it back up yet though). What happened?

Quite the trial to sign in to freaking Apple support.  I apparently made an account with my primary e-mail, but damned if I can recover the password, apparently I don't know my own birthday.  So I had to make a new account with another e-mail, and even when I thought it was done, no, I had to fill out more information before I could get to this screen.  You won't let me ask for tech support from your message board without my mailing address?  Then my completely inoccuous user name was rejected for containing banned words.  Lemurs and cats are profane now, what?  This is why I hate computers.
Anyway, I've got Mac OS X 4.something, can't check because it is shut down, and I already described my problem in the subject there before I got dragged back into account creation.  I searched several places for answers but all I can find are discussions about double beeping at startup (even when excluding the word "startup" from search results), while my double beeping started all of a sudden when the computer was in use.  The beeps were certainly less than a minute apart.  What happened? What do I need to do about it? Is it safe to start the computer up again?  Fortunately my files are pretty much all backed up.

I don't know if we are experiencing the same problem, but this is what I did and it seemed to work for me so far.
Before anything I had to hard restart my laptop. hold power button until off then turn back on.
In Finder click on Go, then click Go to Folder.  in the dialogue box type
    /var/db/crls
In that folder there are two files that you need to move to the trash
    crlcache.db
    ocspcache.db
You will need to type in your password to move these to the trash.
Restart your computer and then Empty the Trash.  It is very important that you empty the trash afterwards.  I forgot to do this the first time and I had to restart the whole process.  It has been a few days and I have been without any problems.
I am not claiming this process to be my own, I found it on another discussion thread and it worked for me. I don't have a link to it because I had to use someone else's computer and had no luck trying to find it again. This is the procedure I followed, I do remember it well and I wrote down the steps because I had to do it twice and got tired of combing through all of the websites I have searched looking for a fix to my problem.  Hopefully this helps, and try it at your own risk of course.
Let me know if you try it and it works or not, good luck.

  • G4 beeps on startup

I got a new HD and new 512MB stick of ram put into my G4. It seemed fine after the HD was installed but a few days later when I bought some second hand ram and slapped it in I got a faint beep on startup. I tried every combination of the ram, but couldn't get rid of the beep untill I unplugged the new HD. So I took it in to the Mac store where I got the HD installed and we couldn't hear the beep!! Took it home and it beeps again, but only when the new HD is plugged in. One strange thing is that the total ram only shows up as 1.19 when it should add up to 1216 MBs; that is two 512's, one 128, and one 64mb stick.
    Any ideas?

    Hi, Mike -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
One strange thing is that the total ram only shows up as 1.19 when it should add up to 1216 MBs; that is two 512's, one 128, and one 64mb stick.
1216MB is correct, and 1.19GB is correct. RAM math is a bit odd because it is base2. One GB = 1024MB, not 1000MB. So, 1216MB divided by 1024MB/GB yields 1.19GB.
Is it possible the drive itself is beeping? Some few have been known to do that, but when that happens it usually presages a drive failure - not something expected with a new drive.
Is the drive jumpered correctly? If your Mac is older than a G4 (MDD) model, you should not use Cable Select jumper settings.
There are some beeps at startup which can indicate RAM issues -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58442
However, those will replace the normal startup chime. That is, if you hear the normal startup chime and then the beeps, it's not a RAM issue.
At least one person posted a similar issue a few years ago. Careful listening finally traced it to the user's UPS - it was alerting that it was running on battery.

  • T500 Beeping on Startup

One week ago, my computer (Lenovo ThinkPad T500)  has started beeping upon startup (one long, two short) and will not allow the system to start. I have to shut down and restart a considerable amount of times before the display finally shows up. The odd thing is that it has informed me that this indicates a video problem, and yet I have run diagnostics and the such, and there is nothing wrong. Furthermore, my computer runs perfectly, if not even better than before the beeps started.
This problem is starting to get annoying and I'm afraid that I might irreversibly damage my computer if I keep trying to start it up when it is beeping. How can I fix this?
Thanks for all of your help!

    katrimc, welcome to the forum
according to the Hardware Maintainance Manual, (pdf p. 52), the beep code means that you possibly have a problem with either your System Board, Display or Memory. I suggest removing and reseating your memory, (pdf p. 78 or look here), and if the problem persists to run memtest86 to check your memory. Let it make at least 3 full passes.
If your memory passes and the symptoms still persist you should call support.
Let the forum know how you get on.

  • Dx2300, beep on startup

I bought a DX2300 microtower used. It worked beautifully at the sellers house. We removed the wires/cables and I took it home. When I reassembled everything I got no action on the monitors(dual), no lghts on the wireless keyboard nor mouse. The CPU makes a single, long beeping on startup. The only thing I did to it was clean out the dust from the front vents and fan units. I believe the seller had a 1T byte external harddrive, but other than that, II believe it's all the same. Any suggestions?
    This question was solved.

I went inside and unplugged and reset each cable I could. It started up smooth and other than the black screen telling me it hadn't been shup down correctly - all works fine. I was able to get my wireless internet set up. All is well in my world. Thank you very much for the help.

  • Startup ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters

    Hi All ,
    Good Evening/Afternoon.
I am oracle version 10.2.0 on LINUX.
I have created a local database for my practice with the name ZION. The pfile for the same currently resides on the location : /u01/app/oracle/ZION.
Whenever while doing a startup i mention this location it gets opened properly.
As a default location , the pfile should be located in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs path so i created a softlink from the above path(/u01/app/oracle/ZION) to the dbs directory.
    [oracle@srv1 dbs]$ pwd

    Hi Both,

[oracle@srv1 dbs]$You guys are correct , the link is a self link... though i created it in /u01/app/oracle/.
I think i need to recheck the syntax for softlink.

  • My Emac just beeps at startup

My niece was using my Emac the other day and she said that all of a sudden it just shut down. When we tried to reboot it, all it does is beep at startup (about 20 times) and then it has the little folder on the screen that alternates between the question mark and a face. When I tried to boot off of the install disk it does boot up, but wont let me re-install the osX. It wont give me the hard drive as a option to install to. I went to the system profiler and it does show that the hard drive is there, but obviously something is wrong. Not really sure what to do and any help would be appreciated.

  • Three loud beeps on startup

I have been experiencing three loud beeps on startup with my Macbook Pro.
Aftter the beeps, the computer stays on a blank screen until I force a shutdown and restart, sometimes taking 3 tries to get past the beeps. Otherwise, It runs great, never crashes or locks up.
I tried reseating the RAM (2-1 gig dimms) after someone told me they thought that the distinctive 3-beep warning was a "bad ram" message. That did not make a difference.
Does anyone know what this may mean?
