1. Cd wont eject, tried everything. 2 Item is being used by Mac osx.

Just before my cd refused to eject I ended up with two folders that have what I would call a biohazard logo on them (Three evenly parted triangles with all the points in the center). The cd that's stuck can be ejected from the desktop n finder, but won't dislodge from computer. So the computer thinks I keep putting it back in. There's another file with the same name as the cd in the tray. That item is apparently being used by Mac osx, and I can't do anything with it. This is all quite bizarre. Everything else works like lightning (downloads, apps, uploads etc.)

Several files within a folder on my son's iMac have become unopenable. The error message is...
Item "filename" is used by mac os x and cannot be opened
    Here are some details...
    1) The suspect files represent approximately half a folder's worth of files.
    2) If I list files alphabetically within the folder, the suspect files occupy a contiguous block within the directory (halfway through the m's to the z's).
    3) The files all report zero KB size and a Date Modified as 1 January 1970, 01:37.
I have tried the following, but to no avail...
    1) Attempt to fix permissions.
    2) Attempt to accessing the suscpect files my placing the computer into Target Disk mode and attempt to access from another mac.
    3) Play about with the application Onyx (I read somewhere this may help)
    4) Attempt to duplicate the files.
    5) Attempt remote access from a networked computer.
    6) Attempt access as admin and root user.
The computer is an iMac G3 DV 400MHz running 10.4.10.
I would be grateful for any advice on how to access these files.
    Many thanks,
    Paul

You might be able to open those files in, say, TextEdit or Terminal, but what is the point? If they are of zero size they aren't going to be bristling with information!
I suggest it would be more fruitful to try to identify what is putting those files there. Which folder is involved? Just that folder, or others as well?
Just a wild guess, to be ignored if not appropriate, but has anything from Adobe been installed recently? Is the folder by any chance ~/Library/Preferences? Are all the file names human readable, in which case does your son recognise the names as connected with anything he created or has been working on, or are the names gobbledegook? Please copy and paste here a couple of samples of the file names. What does Finder 'Get Info' show as the extension? and the "Open with:"?

  • Trying to use Imovie to create a movie using a Mac OSX 10.6.7, 3.2 g Intel core. Using clips from my Sony CRX 150 and need to remove sound in order to add music to the movie. HEELLLP!

OK, I 'm attempting my first movie here using this Mac OSX Snow Leopard with IMovie. I have clips I created from an 8mm Movie projector copied on my Sony CRX 150 and the sound of the projector is all over these clips and I have no idea how to remove that before adding music. So far this has been great and this is my first bump in the road. Also I notice tho, that the icon for my camcorder has disappeared from the desktop and looks like I'm gonna have trouble "ejecting" it in order to shut things down!!!  HELLLLP!

Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2  "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.

Photoshop CS5 crashes when trying to print. I recently updated to Mac OSX Mavericks. Help?

Hi, Chris. Thanks for giving this query a look. I have the same problem. All documents print on my HP Deskjet 932C except Photoshop files since I updated to Mavericks.
    My CS5 version is 9.0 x64. Mavericks is 10.9.4.
I checked the HP drivers and HP doesn't have one for OS X newer than 10.4.
I tried printing out the detailed report (very long!) and this page rejected the reply as spam. Can we provide the text as an attachment?

Hello! Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

the box on my comp is custom made but i know it works with ipod's fine because my mini worked fine with it
the people at the apple store said the nano was charging there
i did get rid of all my software for my mini and put all the needed software on the computer for the nano.
so one question...what do i do?
oh, and i only have 3 more days to return it if it doesnt work

Do you have service pack 4 installed on your windows? If not you need to get that downloaded and installed from microsoft.
To view which service pack that you have installed, right click on My Computer (either the icon on your computer desktop or in your windows start bar) and then left click on "properties." Your service pack information should be displayed in the window that comes up.

  • Dvd stuck in Dvd drive, won't eject, tried everything

Hi, I inserted a dvd into the dvd drive and I had headphones on so I couldn't tell but I don't think it made any noise at all when I put it in, meaning it didn't pull it in like it normally does. It just kind of slid in and got too far so that I can't pull it out. I have tried everything. Hitting eject shows the eject symbol on the screen but does nothing. It does not show and dvd on the desktop and it isn't making any noise at all. I have restarted and tried holding the mouse button down on startup which did not work and tried getting it out with a thin card as suggested in other places. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I don't know how helpful this is, but I just luckily got out of a similar situation. I tried all advice on this page, nothing worked. The CD was still stuck in the drive, and despite the fact that I could hear it running during start-up, it did not show up on the desktop and the dvd-drive was no longer recognized by the system.
I've had a disc stuck once before, and then I eventually had to give up and send the macbook to apple.
So, this is what I did. Since after booting the disc stops turning and the unit goes to sleep, or rather coma in this case, I went into system preferences menu and adjusted so that the harddrive never goes to sleep, nor rests. This page (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051207044615606&query=lingon) motivated me to do so, since this will affect all drives, including the optical one, apparently.
Turns out, after restarting the computer the ordinary eject button suddenly did the trick!
Hope your problem can be solved the same way.

  • Itunes wont install tried everything

i have tried to install itunes 8. comes up with not a valid win32 error. have deleted installer. dont have quicktime installed so tried to install and it came up with the same error. please help....

Saying you have tried everything doesn't help because no one else knows what you tried.
Have you seen this article on trouble installing iTunes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
It contains advice about your error and other general help.
You could try downloading with a different browser if you have one. Turning off popup blocking and also web accelerator software if you have it.
Also when you download iTunes, save the installer on your desktop and run it from there. Also turn off virus checking during the actual install.
If none of that works, you could try downloading from an alternative site assuming the mods don't edit out the link which they sometimes do.
    http://filehippo.com/download_itunes/
Have you had any problems with downloads from other sites?

  • My macbook pro is slow and gets the loading wheel often - Tried everything, been recommended to start using time machine

Hey, my macbook pro started going slow out of nowhere and gets the loading wheel often, I can't close it without the charger attached otherwise it heats up real bad. I've been told to get a hard drive and back up everything through time machine and then reinstall it but wouldn't that just carry over whatever problem I'm having. I've tried everything that I've found on here like going into disk utility and repairing anything broken, I checked my memory and all that and it was good but I deleted anything unnecessary and put all my music and movies onto an external hard drive.

If you don't already have backups, and you have any data that you want to keep, shut down the computer immediately and don't turn it on again until you have at least one external hard drive to use for backing up. Then see below.

  • Trying to reset administrator password by using the Mac OS X Install disc to reset but it won't allow me to without original administrator password. Frustrating.

Trying to reset administrator name/password by using the Mac OS X Install disc to reset but it won't allow me to without original administrator name/password. Frustrating. Reason I'm trying to reset is that it seems to be not recognising the administrator name as have changed password in System Preferences - Accounts.
    PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Here's the instructions if you have the discs.
*Mac OS X: Changing or resetting an account password*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274?viewlocale=en_US
    Changing your administrator password
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh655.html
Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Without the discs, try this (OS 10.5 only). *How to Reset User Password via single user mode*
    http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/300019-howto-reset-user-password-via-single- user-mode.html
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!
     Cheers, Tom

  • Itunes wont open - tried everything, help!

I have installed the new itunes and now it wont open, i've uninstalled it, reinstalled it, installed new versions etc.
    Anyone got any advice?

I got this from somewhere else in the communities -- and it worked! Here it is just as the person who posted it .
+Hi People, thanks for your help. I had the same problem. After being prompted to update to iTunes Ver. 9.1 I went ahead and let it automatically update and install iTunes and Quicktime. After updating to Ver. 9.1, iTunes would not open or run on my Windows XP system. It would show up in "processes" as a running program but would not show up on my screen.+
+After reading your discussion about how Bonjour would interfere, I tried to uninstall it. It wouldn't uninstall because it is using one of the processes. I tried quite a few things including completely uninstalling all Apple programs and reinstalling iTunes. I manually uninstalled Bonjour. No luck!+
++Here's what you need to do. After reinstalling iTunes, Navigate to the Program Files\ Bonjour+ folder and rename this folder Bounjour.Old. Restart the computer. Bounjour service should not now show up as a service in Administrative Tools\Services. DELETE the Bonjour.old folder. THEN go to Control Panel - Remove Programs and REMOVE Bounjour. It will now uninstall sucessfully.+
+After doing this iTunes started right up, loaded all my old settings, and recognized my iPod just like normal. Hooray and good luck.+

  • IMessage and FaceTime wont work - Tried everything

I know this is asked a lot, but I think I have a different case because I used iCould to reset at first. Earlier today, I changed my passcode so my sister couldnt get on and I forgot it 20 minutes later. I unlocked it by removing everything and restoring it before and it worked, so I went to do that. I got a message saying I could reset until "Find My iPhone" was turned off, but I couldn't do that because I didnt know the passcode. I decieded to go to iCloud and erase my phone to turn 'Find my iPhone" off, which worked. When I restored from my iPhone back up, I went to FaceTime (I FaceTime a ton) and I realized it wasn't working. I went to settings and I saw it was turned off, so I turned it back on. Well, like most people it was sitting at "Waiting for activation" and after that, "An error occured during activation. Try again." I looked it up online and found a lot of solutions, to which none worked. I tried Hard rebooting, reseting network settings, Removing everything (This time off of iTunes), Removing everything and setting up as a new device, flicking it on and off multiple times (obviously), and I think thats it. Is their any other known way to fix it? Everything was working for me up until I changed my passcode and reset using iCloud which was today. I'm running the lastest version of software (iOS 7.0.4), and I don't really care if iMessage is working as I have unlimited texting so I don't need it, but I need FaceTime fixed more than anything. If anyone could help, that'd be great.

I have tried restoring and setting up as a new iPhone and then turning FaceTime on if that's that you meant. That didn't work for me. Disabling Cellular didn't work either, but thanks for the suggestion.
