1 column footnote in 3 column story. GIEF! NAU! ;)

Hello!
Im working on an article for a polish horse magazine and I have an issue with footnotes here.
Take a look:
I got this:
And I want this:
The First one is created with default footnotes, the text is wrapped to one column only.
What I want is to create footnote by having the 3 collumns content pulled up and creating room for 1 column footnote.
Is there a way to do this in Indesign with automated, standard tools?
So far I just do that by creating a separate text frame and formating my footnote there. But its slow and unefficient, not mentioning that when the Story text moves for some reason I have to adjust the footnotes manually.
Best regards.

No footnotes cannot span columns in InDesign - please read this thread post and I hope you can fill out the wish form that is linked there.

  • Backspace deletes blank spaces

I notice a strange and irritating behaviour in Pages 1.7.2, Numbers 1.7.3 and Keynote 1.7.2:
If I delete characters with backspace and delete the last character of a word, that space before the character is deleted as well.
    Example:
Text: "hello wo". Press Backspace, text: "hello w". Press backspace again, text: "hello" ('w' and space deleted in one step).
if you use the onscreen keyboard, that might help. If you use an external bluetooth keyboard, the deletion of the space is pretty annoing. The behaviour is pretty new. Can it be switched off?
Please help. I am writing a novel on my iPad and *hate* to insert the missing blank again and again.
    Thanx,
    Goetz
P.S.: In other apps (such as iCal, Mail etc.) backspace works normal. It must be an iWork-thing

My ID version is CS6 for my Mac OS X 10.8.4. In a multi-column story, one column might run all the way to the bottom of the text box, while the next is four lines short and the next is two lines short. Screen shots are provided

  • If a footnote spreads across three columns, does it always fill the middle one?

Not a scripting question per se, but it sure affects the script I'm writing. I'm trying to detect and address collisions between footnotes and other items on a page. I think in the world of documents I inhabit, I'm not going to run into such a long footnote, but the moment you start thinking that way one pops out of the woodwork and smacks you in the face.
I guess the reason for my question is some sense that maybe there's a kind of column-balancing that goes on with footnotes? No of course not. I think I know the answer to my own question: Yes! But I wonder if there's a circumstance where it's not true.
Anyone have any instances of a footnote spreading to three columns without filling the second one? For example, could keeps cause a space to appear at the top, enough to allow some story text in there?
Wait: InDesign hates empty text columns -- is one that only has a partial footnote in it considered empty? In the case where there is only a partial footnote, myTextColumn.footnotes.length returns 0.
Perhaps I should construct some examples to see what happens.

Well, it didn't take much experimentation to discover that the answer is no. The middle column in a three-column frame has zero or one line of text from the main story along with the text from the long footnote. And this without any keeps at all. It looks really ridiculous when there is just one line there, although in the case I was working with I used the default gap above the notes of zero. Let's try with a gap there ...
Same thing happens when a gap is called for. You get one or no lines at the top of the second column, depending on the height of the frame.

  • Can footnotes span 2 columns?

I'm trying to set up a document that has two columns, and I'd like the footnotes to span the two columns at the bottom of the page.
    Any way to do this?

i tried it, but there seems to be aproblem in Indesign CS5.5? the numbers seems to be renumbered, and the original numbers disappear, leaving the first word of the footnote in superscript instead of the number.
but apart from that it works...
Anybody have tricks for getting these footnotes - with correct numbers into this fabulous separate story like the script says?

  • Is it possible to display Footnotes in column layout?

I have many small footnotes (one or two words). To prevent wasting space with the footnotes I would like to have the footnotes in a two column layout and the body text in one column.
Is this possible in Framemaker (latest version)?

No, not in any version. It's a hardcoded function of the text frame
itself. You can't even split the frame manually. The footnotes
automatically go to the bottom of the text frame holding the
    paragraphs with the footnote.

  • Table footnotes in columns

Apologies if this has been asked before.
I have some wide tables which are displayed in landscape, in rotated pages whose text frames have been rotated back so the table is editable. There are also some table footnotes, so they extend right across the width of the table, which is really the height of the page.
I'd like to get them into two or three columns but I can't figure out how. I've tried defining multiple columns on the rotated frames and having the tables straddle the columns but this causes the footnotes to also straddle the colums.
All assistance welcome. Frame 7 if it matters.

Maybe there's a more elegant solution, but I've done something similar using a workaround. See if it works for you and has the intended effect.
Set the text frame on your landscape page to two or three columns, and place 'dummy' footnotes in the text frame outside the table. You might want to add a manual column break and color the footnote numbers white to hide them. Having prepared this, you can use cross-references to the footnotes instead of using real table footnotes.
You might even leave away the built-in footnote functionality and use only cross-references.

  • Two columns with footnotes page and paragraph that continues is not correctly tag (for accessibility

When I have a document with two columns in indesign CS5.5 and footnotes page. If there's a note in the first column, the paragraph that begins in the second column is not correctly tag. This is shown with an automatic tag <P>, and with this symbol "¶"
    Why?
How I can I solve it?
    thanks

    Hi John,
My page is not a part of a task flow. The whole app is an Admin app comprising of multiple individual pages navigated using Menu.
I have tried to run this page individually on my local machine as well as when deployed on the WLS server. The behavior is the same.
    Kindly advice,

  • Footnote placement in columned document!??

In my document, the text box is set to 2 columns. The paragraph text flows in those 2 columns, but headings/subheadings span.
It all worked wonderfully until the client requested the addition of footnotes.
I want the footnotes to be at the bottom of the page, but InDesign is placing them above any "spanning content" (headers), which looks pretty darn goofy.
Am I missing a button/preference somewhere that'll put these things at the bottom of the page (where footnotes belong!!)? There's absolutely no way my client would approve this layout as it currently is.

It's a bug. See the comments in http://indesignsecrets.com/heres-what-we-love-about-indesign-cs6.php (irony unintentional).

  • Footnotes in two columns?

I have a document with about 10 very short footnotes at the bottom of each page. It would be a better use of page space to have my footnotes in two (or more) columns. I haven't had success trying this. Can it be done?

    Thomas
Pages' footnotes on the same page will span the width of the page irregardless of the number of columns.
Pages' footnotes at the ends of sections, or the document will contrarily conform to the number of columns of the layout, so if there are 2 columns, the footnotes will run at the bottom of each f the two columns.
This an odd design decision, having different behavior where you expect to be given a choice or for it to act the same way.

  • InDesign cs5 keeps crashing whenever I try to alter the footnote formatting via Type Document Footnote Option or Paragraph Styles using Span Columns

InDesign cs5 crashes whenever I try to alter the footnote formatting by going to Type > Document Footnote Option > and then I try to select a Paragraph style I've already set up. The Paragraph style I need to use includes Span Columns, which I think may be the issue. I think this because when I then I tried to create a new document and re-import the styles, it won't even let me add Span Columns feature to the Paragraph Style in question.
I can send screen shots of everything (e.g. dialog boxes) if that would be helpful in understanding the issue I'm having.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks.

  • Control footnote column width and placement?

    Hello,
My client used dynamic footnotes, which I find frustrating to deal with.
I have a 3-column layout (see attached image) and the footnotes are falling in the column in which the
reference shows up. But I want to have footnotes preferably always fall in the leftmost column
and stretch across at least 2 columns. I feel like I've done this before but don't recall how I controlled them.
Is there any way to do this?
Also, the footnotes seem to be in sort of table-like cells. If I turn on "show frame edges,"
I see blue lines surrounding each footnote. I have paragraph style set to 1p above but that only refers
to the entire block of footnotes. How can I add space between each footnote?
    Thank you,
    Jane

    Hi,
this is HTML matter. AFAIK It isn't possible to set row height. Workaround:
Suppose your first column has name COL01, then edit column attribute HTML Expresion like this: <div style="height:50px; overflow:auto;">#COL01#</div>
Than every row will be at least 50 pixels high, more if cell content in another column will be too long to fit in. But you can do the same thing for all columns and than you will have exactly 50 pixels high rows and scrollbars in every cell with long text.

  • Footnotes to insert in 2nd column

We received a layout to insert the InDesign footnotes directly in 2nd column instead of 1st column, could anyone advise to handle this requirement?
    Thanks,
    Praveen

Footnotes are inserted at the bottom of the column where the footnote is located.
That is, if your footnote number is in the First Column then the footnote appears in the first column.
If your footnote is in the Second Column - then it will appear at the foot of that column.
There are no other options directly in InDesign.

  • How to limit footnotes to the column?

    Hi,
If I add footnotes to my two column page, they stretch across both columns. End notes on the other hand, do stay in the column, but the submission guidelines for my paper say that they want footnotes per column...
Is there a way of doing this in Pages? I know MS Word can...

It was also the only way I could think of, but it is so unsatisfactory.
Thanks for the answer, though. At least I know that either it's not possible, or that at least I'm not the only one that overlooked the totally obvious...
