1 GB AIFF has duration of 0:00

My MacBook crashed while recording in STP 2.0.2 yesterday. It was an hour in and in the Recordings folder is a 1 GB file, which I imagine is the audio up until the crash. But I can't open it in anything! The duration is 0:00, while it should be about 1:09;00 or so.
I imagine I need to re-write the header data so the audio will be read… or… is it a lost cause?
It's for a community radio station where the main recording PC had died so I stepped up heroically to record it on the MacBook at the last minute – very embarrassed that it crashed!
Thanks!

I am having a similar issue with my AIFF files after soundtrack pro froze during a recording. Any information on this topic would be a huge help.

  • Rendering as .aiff

I want to clear something up. Since AIFF has no compression, in theory one could conceivably take the same file and keep rendering it as aiff and it will never lose quality?

there is almost certainly loss in the mixdown process
due to dithering. how many times before you perceive
it is something you'd have to try to find out.
Here's my problem. I'm doing a film score in GB that I've already converted to aiff two times. Then I have to take that file and put it in a host called Tracktion (so I can use its great mastering tools). Then I have to export once again from Tracktion into Final Cut Express, and then finally from FCE to iDVD. By my count that's five different exports of the same song. Is that a no-no? I can't think of any other way to do it.

  • Default duration on the timeline of Roll title.

We are developing a title importer plugin for Premiere Pro CC.
I want to set a default duration value when I put materials on the timeline.
However, selector imGetInfo8 is called, if imFileInfoRec8->vidInfo.isRollCrawl=1 is returned, the value of General Setting will be effective.
    It is supplementary as follows:
    1.materials is a roll/crawl title.
2.The roll/crawl title made by our software.
    3.roll/crawl title has duration.
4.The roll/crawl title in the timeline already, I want to change the duration freely.
5.It is not reflected although imFileInfoRec8->vidDuration was tried.
Is it possible in Premiere Pro SDK ?
    Best Regards.

    Hi Zac,
    I really appreciate your reply.
About "roll/crawl titles cannot be initialized with a non-default length".
-> I Understand. I hope to become able to initialize it in the future.
*I hope that a new type is added to the 'ImporterDurationType'.
for example 'imNoDurationVidDurationDefault' ---> use supplied vid duration and duration on the timeline can be changed freely.
Normal video does not seem to fit as a solution.
Because I would like to adjust duration freely on the timeline.

  • Archiving cds and why do i need id3 tags

here comes another one of those questions looking at which codec to use to store music.....i also have tag questions.....
i'm about to (re-)rip my cd collection and looking at some info re codecs and id3 tags
now.....i believe i understand the benefits of alac (lower file sizes, keeping id3 tags, lossless compression) v wav(no compression)
however (and for some out there) if we just entertain the fact that wav may have some minute benefit for me depending on my questions and answers given.....and yes i know wav and alac will sound the same to the human ear - i accept that as a given of lossless compression ......
    points i'd like to outline:
i am looking to rip my cds, firstly and mostly, for an archiving purpose!! purpose numero uno!!
i could well want to re-create cds with these archived records in the future
size of files is of no concern to me at all
    i'm using a mac nowadays
i will convert most of these files, where needed, to use with a portable music player (i'm not bothered with having, say a wav file and then also converting and having an alac file, as crazy as that sounds)
this is where i ask for info re the benefits of embedded tags that are found in alac:
    are these tags that important?
where do they come into play in ripping and later converting music?
are these uses just bells and whistles that have no benefit to my needs?
if i rip cds to wav (or aiff), say, using itunes, will cd info and track listings be available on the downloading database (eg itunes) to name these wav files?
if i then ensure these song files are kept under the album's folder, have i just done what tags do? surely not. that is all i have needed in the past.
this is where i feel i may be really missing what id tags (can) do
are tags more than just managing song files and where they belong and where they have come from?
is it just a convenience of not personally managing your song files (as per previous paragraph)?
(in the past i had ripped cds to mp3 codec. i think i used "cd rip" or something like that on my pc.
my mp3 files were individually named and sorted and kept under album folders under artist name folders.
apart form the very odd occasion all track and album info i needed was found on a database that was attached to the ripping software.
i never had a problem managing/maintaining these files and folders.)
i welcome some enlightenment on some of my questions above and other info that may be relevant
and yes, i understand that music will sound the same as a wav file or alac file - but humour me re using wav and tell me why i need id3 tags
i guess the crux of it is:
why do i need id3 tags?
does my managing of my song file in the album folder do what tags do?
what problems/shortcomings/headaches may i encounter by not having those tags if i use wav as opposed to alac?
what do i not know about these little buggers?
what codec is best for my purpose of archiving and re creating of cds (for playing in cd players)
thanks in advance for your input and any clarity that i may experience through this

as mentioned earlier if i just have songs (wav) in album folders, when i import these albums into itunes, do you know if these will come up under AN album with their file names purely using my filename setup (but with no artwork)?
Yes, iTunes will read the filename, such as "Track 1" or something else and display it. But nothing else. No Album or Artist.
so the tracks will remain grouped as an album based on their initial folder and the albums and tracks as per file name?
    Crows2012 wrote:
also, does aiff have limitations (apart from the full size of the file)?
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. For all practical purposes AIFF and WAV are exactly the same thing. They're just file containers.
i thought that i had read somewhere that aiff tags could run into some issues with its tags - ie may not always be transferred 100% accurately with certain players (or hardware maybe)
    Crows2012 wrote:
and how do these codecs work re-creating an album for the purposes of playing in a cd player? - this is a crucial question for the purpose of my archiving/backup of CDs THEMSELVES
That's actually going to depend on what burning software you use. Once you rip the tracks to whatever file container you choose (WAV/AIFF/ALAC) you'll never really exactly re-create the album. But for archiving purposes all three file containers will do what you want, which is to create a lossless archive. AIFF has the advantage of supporting embedded ID3, which ALAC has the additional advantage of the files also being about half the size of AIFF/WAV files.
i was thinking that maybe wav was able to recreate an album (in effect duplicate one) if my cd was lost or damaged in the future. i was thinking this IF when ripping to wav everything is unchanged (unless there is other data on the original cd). and maybe only possible with wav. the purpose for this would be to play recreated cds on my cd player
    any idea on this one?
(i havent looked too thoroughly on this angle but i'll keep googling on this one)
much appreciate all info thus far

  • Help with ID3 tag conversion

hi - I use a product called Squeezecenter as a music server to drive a couple music devices, and in order for it to read tags and artwork properly it needs to used v 2.3. iTunes has always given me the option to select all tracks and convert to v2.3, no problem. Recently I re-ripped my entire CD collection (to AIFF) and also buy high resolution tracks online and transcode from WAV to AIFF. AIFF has tagging capability, but now that my entire library is AIFF and some Apple Lossless, iTunes is no longer giving me the option to convert tags to v2.3 (which I used to do after I added new tracks to ensure compatibility). So, anyone know what version iTunes uses by default with the AIFF format now that I don't have the convert option? (I have a 2nd library with my lossy collection and it still has the option to convert tags, so I'm guessing it's the presence of MP3 or AAC that allows for this?).
So anyone know how to access the tag conversion feature when just AIFF/Apple Lossless files or which version of tags it might be using? Thank you!

  • What formula for finding sum of Time from cells in a row?

Is there a template on Numbers or a simple Sum formula that i can use to add hours and minutes worked so that a cell will show total number of hours and minutes worked in a day? Thanks.

In its bare form, the required formula would be :
    =(timeOut1-timeIn1)+(timeOut2-timeIn2)+(timeOut…-timeIn…)
this said, you must understand that Numbers has no time items.
It has date_time ones and, if it's Numbers '09, it has duration ones.
A cell whose format is defined to display only a time value contains always a date component.
Near the safari window in which I am writing is a Numbers document.
If I type 13:58:20 in cell B2, the app starts displaying 13:58 because the contents parser which is in Automatic mode recognized that my entry was resembling to a time one. So it « decided » to display only the hours and minutes of the time component.
If I enter the Cells Inspector and define the format to date time displaying the date and the time (with seconds), I get: 2012-04-12 13:58:20
If the process whose start was just typed is supposed to end at 18:26, I may repeat the already described process to C2 but as quite everybody knows in this Discussions forum, I'm lazy.
So, I select every cells supposed to receive a time value and define, temporarily, their format to date_time displaying date, time with seconds. This way I will not have to repeat that for every entry.
    In C2, I type 18:26.
    The app displays : 2012-04-12 18:26:00
Leaving space for two other tasks, in H2, I type =C2-B2
    As I am running Numbers '09, I get 4h 27m 40s which is a duration value.
Now, we will assume that the start time remains unchanged but that the task will end tomorrow at 5:55
If I type this value immediately in C2, the cell will contain 2012-04-12 05:55:00 and H2 will contain -8h 3m 20s which is certainly not what you want to get.
If I wait tomorrow before typing this end time in C2, the cell will contain 2012-04-13 05:55:00 and H2 will display the wanted value : 15h 56m 40s.
CAUTION : the application made no error, it just did exactly what I wanted it to achieve.
Third case, I decide to type the start and the end time when the task isfinished, say on 2012-04-14,
    B2 will contain : 2012-04-14 18:26:00
    C2 will contain : 2012-04-14 05:55:00
and one more time we will get the infamous -8h 3m 20s which is certainly not what you want to get.
So, it's clear that a more sophisticated formula is required.
Here I will describe the one which I use. I guess that other helpers will describe other ones. It's the rule of the game.
    I use the function TIMEVALUE.
    =(TIMEVALUE(C2)-TIMEVALUE(B2)+IF(TIMEVALUE(C2)>TIMEVALUE(B2),0,1))*24
which will return the durations expressed in decimal hours.
This formula is OK as long as the task duration isn’t longer than 24 hours.
If a task duration may be greater than 24 hours, the best scheme would be to enter full date_time values.
For several tasks, the formula would be :
    =(TIMEVALUE(C2)-TIMEVALUE(B2)+IF(TIMEVALUE(C2)>TIMEVALUE(B2),0,1)+TIMEVALUE(E2)- TIMEVALUE(D2)+IF(TIMEVALUE(E2)>TIMEVALUE(D2),0,1)+TIMEVALUE(G2)-TIMEVALUE(F2)+IF (TIMEVALUE(G2)>TIMEVALUE(F2),0,1))*24

  • Change in structure of program in future.

    Hi All,
I have a requirement from the client.
Currently a program of study has duration of 3 years.
but in future after 2 or 3 years the same program of study will be restructured, and will be having duration 4 years.
What should I do, so that in future when this program of study is restructured, student associated with previous structure would use the old structure and the new student who takes this program of study (new structure), would use this new structure.
All the processes associated with old student should use the old structure as well.
    Please suggest a solution.
    Regards..
    Sudhir

    Hello Everyone,
    I read all postings and the solution seemed quite functional. But we are facing a complicated version of this situation. Let me explain;
Our client has 4 different colleges and 16 different programs of study for undergraduate studies. Thus, at the beginning, we have 16 different program plans stated. But it is foreseen that (with former experiences) there are goning to be some changes in the program plans. For example a student (stu. X) entered school in 2006. He/She has to complete 140 CRH and is still a student. Another student (stu. Y) entered the school in 2009 and because of the change in courses and total credits he/she has to complete 130 CRH. In order to make things more difficult, a course(course A) which was offered in the second semester (we assume that total studying time is 8 semesters - 4 years) is replaced by another course (course B). In the old curriculum course A was offered in the second semester but now in the seventh semester, in the old curriculum course B was offered in seventh semester but now in second semester.  Stu. X had completed the course A but because of replacement, his credits earned from course A was deleted. (actually it is not that difficult to solve a single problem for just one student and for just one course)
It is strongly forseen that we are going to be facing situations like this even more difficult ones. So we need to find a way to manage the changes in curriculum and assigning those different curriculums to different students. We thought of creating different SC objects but we assume that we are going to have 2 or 3 different curriculums for each program of study which means we can have 30-40 different SC objects.
I would really appreciate if you can help me with this problem.
    King Regards,
    Kerem

  • Use event trigger process chain

    Hi friends,
I am working on a process chain tuning task.
One request is to change a schedule method  of an interrupt from date/time to event.
I know how to generate and utilize event.
    My worrying is:
    Is an event has duration?
E.g Today's process chain scheduled at 01am,,processing, the interrupt was triggered  by event at 04am, but at 10am, the event was trigger again for some unknown reason.
Then, the process chain with the interrupt will be scheduled  at 04am tomorrow, but actually, there may be no event for tomorrow as requirement(due to some reasons,we do not like PC run everyday).
Anyone know how to solve this problem?

    Martin
    You partially answered my questions.
My chain contains both date/time schedule and event trigger.
    As is:
    Start-date/time schedule daily at 1:00am
    step1,step2,,etc
    interrupt-now, it is date/time schedule,at 4:00am
    other steps.
    To be:
    Start-date/time schedule daily at 1:00am
    step1,step2,,etc
    interrupt-  event trigger schedule
    other steps.
I know how to trigger event by ABAP program.
    My concern is:
Today afternoon, someone run this ABAP 10 times to generate 10 events, what will happen tomorrow?
Actually, according to business requirement, tomorrow's process chain(interrupt below part) shall not be ran.

  • Losing iTunes Tag Info Upon Restore from Time Machine Backup

I tried to drag & drop the iTunes music folder from my backup external drive (time machine backup) into my current iTunes music library. The files copied OK but most of the tag info (artist, album, genre, etc.) was lost. Also, the system placed a two digit number in front of the song title. Does anyone know why this happened or what I did wrong?

In the event that you have a failure with your drive, you want to drag the entire iTunes folder back to the computer after things are repaired. In this folder you will find a database file (iTunes Library) along with the iTunes Music folder. It sounds like you only copied the iTunes Music folder, not the iTunes folder that it sits in.
If you copy that whole folder, then you can restore your entire library as it was including play lists, counts, ratings, etc. and all the WAV file tags.
You might try converting one of the WAV files to AIFF and to Apple Lossless, update the tags in both, then remove them from your library but don't let them get deleted off the hard drive. Now add them both back in and see if the tag info is retained. Off the top of my head I only recall WAV for sure not saving this info, but AIFF might and I am pretty sure Apple Loss does. AIFF has the advantage of being universal but will retain the same file size as WAV. Apple Lossless has the advantage of somewhat smaller file size, but may not be easily transferable to other non-Mac systems. All three type (wav, aiff, and lossless) are lossless formats, so all give you the same quality as the original from which you got them.
If AIFF and Apple LL both retain the metadata, then you might consider switching to one of those if quality is your number one priority. Although my own opinion is 320kbps MP3 would sound plenty good, but then I only rip my stuff to 192kbps MP3s, so perhaps I just am not as picky as a lot of people.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Best Import format for quality and size to use on iPod and to burn

I want to import from CD's to primarly download to iPod but also to occassionly burn a CD. I would like to be able to set import format 1 time for best results for both. If this is not possible then what would be best format for iPod (smallest/best quality) and best format for burn's (size doesn't matter, ha!ha!) but quality does.

It all depends on your personal preferences and your ears (the quality of your hearing).
Recalling some recent topics in this forum, I remember one person, who insisted to rip all his tracks into a full (lossless) format and another person who was happy with converting all his tracks in 48 kbps.
As for myself, I rip all my CDs in Apple Lossless, which result in full audio quality files having about half the file sizes of AIFF and WAV (which both are uncompressed).
Then I apply the proper tags, artwork and (sometimes) lyrics and convert them to AAC 128 kbps files for 'daily' use on the iPod, iTunes and burning on Audio CD for the car CD-player. I then store the Apple Lossless files on an external disk for archival purposes.
In your case, if size doesn't matter, I would rip them in AIFF or Apple Lossless.
AIFF has the advantage to be a universal format, which can be read by every application that works with audio files.
    File size comparison (average MB/minute):
    AIFF and WAV: 10 MB
    Apple Lossless: 5 MB
    AAC 128 kbps: 1 MB
    Hope this helps.

  • How many songs possible on a 700 MB CD?

How many songs can you burn on a 700MB CD? If each song file is generally 4-5 MB...it seems that you should be able to get well over 100 songs on a CD. But the most I can get is around 18-20.
How do I use the entire capacity of a typical 700 MB CD?

It depends on the kind of CD you are burning.
An Audio CD can hold max. 80 minutes of music.
The file size of the source is not important.
It's because the source (mp3, m4a, WAV or AIFF) has to be converted to the native format of an audio CD (16 bit PCM) and that allows only 80 minutes on a 700 MB CD.
If you burn an MP3 CD, the songs have to be in mp3-format already and you can fill the disc all the way up to it's 700 MB.
There is no time limit this time, only a size limit.
    Hope this helps.

  • "Playlist is too dense" error

21 audio instrument tracks in my arrangement. Never seen this error before. Have frozen tracks but they won't play and this message comes up. Could this be a corrupt song or another variation of the disk too slow message?
    Anyone had experience with this?

What are the differences between and Audio CD and an MP3 CD?
When you burn an audio CD, the tracks get converted to .aiff (they will not stay as .mp3 or aac) This is an uncompressed format. In other words, the .aiff has a larger file size than .mp3 or aac. Of the shelf CDs are formatted .aiff.
A MP3 CD is just that, a CD that contains .mp3s. Some CD players cannot play a MP3 CD. All CD players can play an Audio CD (the native format for a CD.)
    Hope this helps...

  • Internal Activity partial confirmation with breaks

How to a maintain a actvity confirmation with breaks, say for eaxample one internal activty is completed as shown below :
    i) completed 20% - from 01.07.09 to 05.07.09 - 5 days
    ii) completed 30% - from 10.07.09 to 20.07.09 - 11 days
    iii) Completed last 40% - from 25.07.09 to 10.08.09 - 17 days
i.e No part of the activity is executed in between the dates 06.07.09 to 09.07.09 & from 21.07.09 to 24.07.09. it is tarted on 01.07.09 and finally completed on 10.08.09 - (Actually it is taken 33 days) - not 40 days

    Hi Chittaranjan Mohanty ,
Your requirement has conflict with the Intepration of term 'duration' and 'work' in SAP standard.
The duration is not take the break into account. E.g. an activity has duration 20 days (4 weeks) and the work = 4 hours, may the person only do 1 hour for this activity.
For the progress it is does not matter, if therre is a break in the time frame or not. The important is how many works are done till now. The time are keeping going.
The flag 'exact break' for the scheduling has other usage, has nothing to do with your case,  see consulting note 151551.
    Kind regards,

  • Recording stopped mas duration for the file has been reached

Has anyone else seen this message, "Recording stopped because the maximum duration for the file has been reached" this is happening on 10.6.2 server and client all updates applied. The File from podcast capture is not saved, it just disappears We are using a Hitachi camera. Any ideas?

This problem has been reported before, here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1704655 . For some reason, that thread was marked as "answered", even though it doesn't seem to have actually been answered.
I've just experienced the problem myself. I'm using OS X 10.6.3 with QuickTime Player 10.0 (113), capturing audio and video over FireWire from a PAL VHS deck via a Canopus ADVC-55. I'm using the "High" setting to record in QuickTime Player.
Sometimes I'm able to capture indefinitely long amounts of video; sometimes, though, I get a "Recording stopped because the maximum duration for the file has been reached" error after capturing only a few seconds. This variability occurs not only between VHS tapes; it also can occur when using the same source VHS tape (the same parts of the tape, even!) repeatedly.
Apple, this appears to be a QuickTime bug. Please investigate and fix it!
