1 GHz eMac - slot over CD-Rom drive - is it a standard cardbus slot?

I own a 1 GHz eMac. When I purchased it, I also purchased an Airport Extreme card which is installed in the slot directly over the CD-Rom drive. See this quicktime movie to see where the slot is:
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/html/emac/emac-airport.mov.html
Is this a standard cardbus slot?
I don't connect to my home network wirelessly so I don't use the airport card and since there will shortly be a new Video iPod in the family I'm wondering if I can remove the airport card and put a USB 2.0 cardbus card in there instead.
The CD-ROM door is removed easily enough and I don't care about the looks so much (maybe a sin in AppleLand so please forgive me).
Anyone know for sure? I even looked in the most recent MacTracker and it's not clear whether it's a standard cardbus slot or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sorry but no, it is not a standard slot of any type. The Airport and Airport Extreme slots are proprietary to Apple and only work with Airport/Airport Extreme cards.

  • Replacing CD rom drive in Hp pavilions a230n

I just rescued a Paviliona230n from a sad end. It was gutted of the good body parts, but I had an old Millenium that I could upgrade to XP or higher. I do need to put the two Cd-rom drives in and cannot figure out how to do it without removing the AMD processor and fan - something I am loath to do without instructions.
Are they clipped down and how do I unplug it safely so I can insert the CD rom drives.
I assume I would make the readable drive as the master  (top) cable connection and the re-writeable one as the slave.  OR???
I think I already overdid the memory bit as the machine seems to have a one GB memory and I put two of those in. Seems to be working.
Next I need to get drivers esp. for the ethernet connection.
Most important is the method to remove the AMD memory unit. I sure don't want to mess that up.
Just for interest: The hardrive with the Millenium OP system was flaky. I think it was the program, but when I tried to install XP as an "upgrade" (to save programs and files) it failed twice. Only when I did a full  install did it work.
Next I will have to check the integrity of the drive itself and I doubt that my dbam (boot and nuke)   wipe disk will work on it. It also does a fine job on checking the hard drive before you install anything. It was not recognized by Millenium.
    TIA
If you have any plant questions I could repay your answer with please visit http://sequimplants.com/
I also have a google plus blog on plants. Plants were the beginning of this need to find a computer with a 3.5 inch floppy. Years ago I had a great program from Gardenware (over 250.00) to make labels. I made a 600 item library of my plants with descriptions.
Win 3.1 now. I can't even install it again as it is propriatory and it needs a unlock key that the company no longer has for old versions. Nothing else can read or open the floppy library backup ... so I downloaded a freefile viewer and hope it will work on it. Hopefully on the XP version. If not I will have to install a floppy drive on  one of my Win 7 computers.
I found this to be beyond understanding. If you sell a car you are obligated to keep parts for it. I cannot see that this program developer cannot have kept the unlock codes for All older versions. Certainly does not make me want to buy their NEW version for 199.00.
If that freefile viewer doesn't pan out all I can do is get a mobile 3.5 floppy with a USB port and plug it into another Nurserymans computer to see if his new version can read it.

  • K7T Turbo LE - Windows XP Pro SP-1 is not detecting my CD ROM drive I used to install XP Pro !!!!!!!

This is an XP driver issue that I'm not sure how to resolve.
This is a brand new K7T Turbo (MS-6330) Limited Edition motherboard (red-colored board, not green), Ver. 3 (no RAID controller on-board)
PSU is 400w (I tried another PSU, same issue)
    Athlon 850MHz socket-A
    CD-ROM drive - Yamaha CDR2100E 16x10x40  UDMA-1
The BIOS is 3.6, updated prior to Windows XP's installation
The VIA 4-in-1 drivers were updated with the latest available on MSI's website for the 6330
2 hard drives installed on the primary controller - one set to master, one set to slave
CD-ROM drive is the only device on the secondary controller, set to master with no slave, and is plugged-into the end IDE cable connector
The board detects the cd drive, and I even installed Windows XP Pro WITH this cd-rom drive, installed as currently configured, which is what pisses me off.  I've installed XP four times today, try different things between installs, and nothing.  The drive works FINE outside of XP, but as soon as XP starts, the drive disappears and XP doesn't even detect it.  Also, while booting up, the start screen will lock up (activity bar freezes and hard drive activity stops) for about ten seconds (but everything's hooked-up right... I'm not a PC rookie!).

  • PowerMac G5 doesn't work anymore simply due to a DVD-ROM drive removal!

Hello, here's what's happened (I'll write using the "present" because I'm not English).
This happened about two days ago:
I need to read an Ultra ATA hard disk, so I power off the Mac.
I remove the SuperDrive DVD-ROM and I connect the hard disk in its place (I already made this with other ATA hard disks in past and it always was OK).
    I close the Mac.
I try to start: nothing! The light on the power-on button of the Screen (Apple Cinema Display 20" plastic) and the light on the power-on button of the Mac case starts flashing 3 times (then stop, than other three times, etc...).
So I power off. I change the jumper configuration of the hard disk, like the Super Drive. I try again: NOTHING. Always three-times flashing the lights.
So I power off. I re-install the DVD drive, close the Mac again and restart it.
SURPRISE: the same symptom! The computer doesn't start and always makes the three-times flashing lights...
So I tried totally removing the DVD drive, and restarting it without it: nothing: same symptom.
Unfortunately I made these attempts forgetting to disconnect the power cable of the Mac!
Then I start trying with other RAM configurations, hoping that just a RAM module got burned. I have 6 ram modules (512 MB each).
I try lots of combinations... nothing, always same symptom.
Finally, I disconnect the power cord again, I re-install all the RAM modules, an I try to reset the CMOS: I remove the Motherboard battery for some seconds.
Than I re-install the battery, close the Mac, connect the power cord, restart it: it works!!!
I go in System Info, and I see that it doesn't recognize two of the 6 RAM modules: just 4. The slots of the other 2 not recognized DIMM modules seems empty, but there is the ram!
So I power off the Mac Again. I disconnect the power cord.
I change the RAM modules positions. I try again: nothing! Again the three-times flashing lights symptom, and always black screen again.
So I try again by removing the CMOS battery... nothing... always flashing...
After lots of attempts (also changing again the RAM positions, trying to remember how it was when it worked...)... nothing.
    I power off the Mac.
After about an hour, I simply try to power on it... IT WORKED!!!
I used it too... went on Internet, etc... Finished working, I powered it off and went to bed.
The day after, I tried to power it on... nothing! Always three times flashing lights...
From that moment, it was totally impossible to let it work...
I tried to change the RAM positions again... I tried also pressing every time the reset button on the Mother Board... nothing...
The only different symptom that I obtained, a couple of times, was that the two lights (on the Screen button and on the Mac tower button) didn't flash, but was always on.... but it didn't run anyway: totally black screen.
How is this possible? Durin 18 years of computer hardware experience, NEVER happened that a computer got broken just removing and re-installing a DVD-ROM drive!
And I'd never imagined that removing a DVD-ROM could be a dangerous operation... It seems to me just like a car that got broken if I replace the cigarette lighter...
What do you think? how is this possible?
If the CPU or the Motherboard or the RAM too got broken... simply it NEVER should run... on the contrary two times it worked very well!... with a broken Motherboard or CPU??? ...mmmm... so strange....
If the RAM got broken... how is this possible? 6 ram modules burned together??? It seems so absurd... (in past there were 8 RAM modules... one or two got broken... so I removed them and it worked again... but not 6 !!!!).
    Any opinion?
    Any practical advice?
    Prevision of costs?
    Thank you!!!

Hi Wolfman I have an update of the situation.
We tried moving the RAM modules again... and at one point it worked! With just 2 RAM modules.
But at the green screen (with the gray apple darker) it blocked.
So we removed the two RAM modules and installed other two modules: it worked again! These two last modules are 512 MB each.
So we restarted the system pressing "c" with the OSX DVD in the drive, and it worked! I used System diagnostic OSX utility and it found the 2 ram modules, but of 256 MB each instead of 512 !!! How is this possible? (if they were broken OK, but detect just half of its size seems so strange...).
Than we restarted it again connecting an OSX bootable external Fire Wire LaCie hard disk (FW400 port), and it worked!
We used DISK UTILITY to test the internal boot hard disk and it gave me an error (verify disk).
The Disk utility was unable to repair the disk.
    Another damage!
I remember that in the past attempts it booted once (not three times flashing) and stopped at the grey screen... (I think: maybe due to the boot hard disk error!).
Unfortunately this external bootable firewire disk has got some problem and it sometimes blocks itself emitting a "clic".
So I powered the mac off and connected another newer firewire lacie bootable hard disk. I connected it in the FW800 port. I rebooted and... surprise: three times flashing light again!!!
No way to let it pass this wall, no initial "sound" again... nothing!
So I removed the FW800 drive, and changed the RAM again (inverted them, always two internal slots n. 1 and 2): it worked!
I booted from the FW400 hard disk, and it worked. I was able to backup some data from the internal hard disk (in order to be able to try to solve the error initializing it), and I tried again to boot with the FW800 hard disk (I want a stable system while initializing a drive!).
As I connected the FW800 hard disk again, I tried to reboot... nothing! Again the three-times flashing light error! No sound... black screen again...
(So, simply removing a DVD ROM I got RAM broken, maybe the Logic board, the hard disk too... maybe the FireWire 800 port too.... mmmm.... this mac is possessed! And it is connected through a professional power stabilizer too!).
So after several attempts with RAM, cmos reset, firmware reset (power it up holding the power on button for some seconds), etc... I got it working again...
So this time I rebooted it pressing "c" and I initialized the internal hard disk using the OSX DVD as boot drive...
Then I rebooted from the FW400 hard disk and I used CarbonCopyCloner to restore an internal hard disk clone OSX complete installation from a .dmg image file in the FW800 lacie hard disk... but this time I connected it not using the FW800 port but through the USB 2.0 port... and it was able to copy the data.
The computer was working... able to boot... no three times flashing error... no FW800 connections... always rebooting OK... the internal hard disk initialized, working, with NO errors (disk utility tested), made bootable...
I tried to reboot again (with no "c" or "alt" pressing, hoping the internal boot hard disk working again): nothing!
THREE TIMES FLASHING LIGHT AGAIN!!! No way to solve the problem now... always flashing...
What is happening here??? I don't understand! I use computers (instable DOS/Windows computers mainly!!!) form about 18 years... never seen a so strange behaviour!!!
We'll try to gather money to replace the RAM, before thinking to a Logic Board replacement...
    Your opinion?
    Thanks!

  • NEED A SATA CD-ROM DRIVE!

    HI!
It happened to me that I ran out of my IDE ports on my i915P bsed mainboard (I used all of the 2). I would like to install a DVD-ROM drive, but I have no more IDE ports. So I nned to get a SATA based on.
Anyone could help me? I know that MSI has a SATA based combo drive, mut do they have DVD-ROM's?
    Thank you in advance
    [email protected] [also MSN]

Apart what NovJoe already suggested, I never heard about a sata DVD-Rom. If you ran out of IDE ports, you can try to install a PCI IDE card and get 2 more ports. Of course if you haven't any free PCI slot, well that's kinda problem.
    Good luck

  • CD-ROM drive dead

I have an old white dome iMac with a ROM drive that appears to be dead - nothing mounts, no sound that the drive is even trying to read a disc - neither audio CD nor DVD.
My issue is I need to "nuke" everything on the hard drive, reformat it and reinstall OS 10.4 (I think that's the highest OSX version this iMac will accept?). Is there any other trick I could do to reformat this iMac? Is it possible over the network?
    Thanks!
    Paul

Well, to boot old PPC Macs from External Drives, they need to be Firewire, not as cheap as USB ones.
    Oh...
If you can get use another Mac w/Firewire, use FireWire target disk mode...
Check whether you need a 6 pin to 9 pin FW cable or whatever each end has.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Put the Install DVD in the the other Mac, shut both down, connect with a Firewire cable, boot the other Mac holding the t key down, once the floating FW symbol shows up, boot this Mac holding the Option/alt key down, eventually the Install Disk will show as a Boot Option on this one.

  • Pavillion dv9810us DVD/CD-ROM Drive and Vista Device Manager Question.....HELP!!!!!

I have a Laptop, just over a year old, runs Vista Home Premium SP2. Here is the scenario
Hadn't used the DVD/CD-ROM drive for 3 or 4 weeks at which time it worked fine. Tried to use it a couple of days ago and discovered it wouldn't respond. I figured I needed to maybe rollback the Driver or something. I checked in the Device Manager and saw the main HDD was listed but there was no DVD/CD-ROM drive in the Device Manager List. Does Vista remove the DVD/CD-ROM drive if it's inoperable (DEAD) or has something happened that removed the Device from the List. I've had Drives go South before in Windows 98 and 2000 but they were never removed from the Device Manager List they just didn't work but I know Vista is a OS of a different color so I don't know. Just trying to figure out if I'm fighting a Hardware or Software fight here, I'm at a loss and can't afford to just take it into a shop for diagnosis. Any answers or tip on how to definitly isolate the problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for any Help.

I have the same problem, dvdrw not showing in device manager.  Bought a new TS-L632N dvdrw by TSST and it still does not show in device manager.  This started after I ordered new recovery disk from HO (vista Home Preminum) and reloaded the OS.  I know HP knows about this problem but will not do anything about it.  Online support not good and a 500 dollar repair bill would be a waste when you can buy a new laptopn for that.

  • How do I remove an SD card from the CD-ROM Drive that also has a CD stuck in the drive?

Hi!  I need some assistance.  We had an individual accidently miss the SD slot on the iMac and placed the SD card into the CD-ROM Drive of the computer. On top of that, a CD was placed in the drive as well and will no longer eject.  Is there a way for me to remove both the CD and the SD card?

The most common method is to fashion an L shape out of cardboard (business card eg) turn the iMac on it's side and fish for the intruder.
As you now have 2 things in the drive this may not work, if so it's a trip to the Apple Store for extraction.

  • Win7 install looking for CD ROM driver (after loading from CD) cannot find it so fails to install.

    Product: HP-IQ-775
OS? Gone!- Was WIndows Vista HP-SP2, but System Recovery wiped it out!
Error Msg: Current message that is stopping the installation of Windows 7 is "Missing CD/DVD ROM Driver- Please insert disk, or browse to location of driver" Browse accnot find driver needed (whatever it is... it is running form the bootable CD drive, so obviously it found something!)
Changes? Oh yeah, you bet!! I have had so many problems with this machine, I cannot list them all. After running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which reported only 2 issues, both software and both resolved, all OS upgrades installed, all drivers updated, ran the MS Malicious Software app, then attempoted an upgrade from Windows Vista- Home Premium, Service Pack 2. Long story short, after 3 days of 'installing Windows 7' on the screen, it failed. No explanation just "update failed, system will rollback to Vista". The rollback was uneventful, but sytem began having problems. Missing drivers, USB ports failed, CPU Fan Failure shut downs, blue screen after blue screen. I sent my system logs to an MCSE 'expert' and he reported " there are so many issues in the logs, that it would be a miracle if the machine ever ran again" He suggested Formatting the drive and instaling Win 7 clean. WIth far too much going on  with projects, I could not do this. Ultimately, Updates would not work, A/V software would not update, Vdeo software would not run. I contacted Microsoft, and after a week or so of email volleys, they escalated it to thieir 'expert', who after a few hours troubleshooting remotely, and multiple failed System Restores, said the only hope was a System Recovery.
After backing up everything today, I did the System Recovery from the Factory Image, the result was fatal! It went through the first half, erasing my operating sytem and associated files, drivers etc, it reported "Error found in Sytem Configuration, System Recvovery not completed", leaving me with an X drive, a C: drive tith nothing on it, and between the two, sho about 30GB of space total, on a 500GB drive!
I figured this would be the best time to do a 'clean install' of Windows 7, as I no longer had an OS to upgrade! I ran my Win7 Install disk, which ran fine, loaded its files, then reported "missing CD/DVD driver. PLease insert floppy, CD or flash drive, or browse to external drive with driver location"
Needless to say, I could find noting that it would accept. I even downloaded a driver from TSST (CD OEM) but the installer would not accept it from the flash drive. That is where I am now. No OS loaded, partitions screwed up, command prompt finds noting but X: (Recovery files?)29GB,  and C: what is left of it, it shows 9GB. Where is the rest of my disk? Who knows.
I have 5 external drives, full system backup on one, all data files on another, System Recovery Backup on another, but cannot access anything with no OS. I can only use the Win7 install boot disk to access the computer at all, and it has limited functionality.
I am writing from my HP-dv-9720 notebook, which has its own OS issues (still running on Vista basic as it will not install SPs), so it is available for email and driver downloads if necessary.
    Anyone want this challenge?
    Thanks
    Doug

WOW! 9 months later and not a sigle response. And now I am back! (Windows7 worked fine BTW!) Now I have the FAN FAILURE, yet the only thing that works on the computer, IS the FAN!! HP is ware of this problem but has done nothing except post a bunch of unrelatre (to IQ-775) stuff! A replacement fan (not that it is needed) is over $300, almost half of what I paid for the entire system!! BS! This is a latent defect and should be fixed by HP!
I currently have 3 HP computers, 5HP printers and an HP plotter! I have been a loyal HP customer fore over 20 years! IF they do not fix this, FREE, I will NEVER buy another HP product again! That is a promise! This is pure BS!  The machine will not boot due to a false "fan failure' report. both fans are running fine, and always have. The defect is in the reporting software or fan firmware, NOT the fan!
I will be back in 9 months to answer myself again!

  • I.43 GHz eMac

I.43 GHz eMac came with 10.4 installed.
I need it to run in 10.3.6.
I installed 10.3.4 from a retail OS installer and while the installation went okay, my display output is only 800x 600... and that is the only choice in the Displays preferences pane.
I realize that I am probably missing the right driver for the video card (ATY, RV351) but I have no idea where I can find such that will work under 10.3.6.
I have also net-installed 10.3.6 a baseload which was created on a 1.25 GHz eMac but this had an ATY,RV280 card installed and clearly this driver doesn't do anything for the ATY, RV351.
I don't want to copy drivers from 10.4 to 10.3.6.
Can anyone advise what I need to do to get the full options, and a full display (I have a much reduced dispaly area at present - 1.5" of black space around the edges).
    Thanks in advance.
And yes, we have a site license for OS X. This is is a school and our standard load is 10.3.6 so we cannot move to 10.4 yet.... otherwise we would.

  • My CD/DVD-rom drive won't read audio cd's

Since installing itunes on my laptop, the CD/DVD rom drive won't read audio cd's any more! However, it will read data CD's and dvds.
It didn't stop all at once...it started failing to read the odd random audio cd. Over time, gradually more and more CD's not recognised until no audio cd's readable at all!
When I say 'not recognised' I mean that if you look in the cd-rom file with a music disc inserted it thinks the drive is empty. The drive spins the disc a few times and then gives up. As only music cd's affected I suspect this is something to do with the itunes software. I've tried the various troubleshooting tips on itunes help but no joy....has anyone else had this problem / anyone know of a possible solution?
    Thanks
    Tiny

I had the same problem and I contacted a support team. They suggested that I upgrade my computer's power supply and I did. I had a 250W drive and now I have a 350W drive and it reads the CDs perfectly; except for one certain CD.

Does anyone know where I can find a driver for the HP 16X DVD ROM Drive?  I have an old HP 515n and I'm attempting to install Window 7 on it.  Windows 7 is asking for the DVD ROM driver.

    Lowell, welcome to the forum.
The only drivers that are available on the Product Specifications page are for XP. Therefore, I don't believe that HP will be developing a driver for the drive. It is possibly too old.

  • System keeps continously checking cd rom drive

Hi..I have a g3 ibook 700 with combo drive..For whatever reason I dont know it keeps activating or checking the cd rom drive whether theres a disk in it or not...its running 10.3.9
and does it even while in sleep mode about every 3 minutes....any info on this greatly apprec..thank you

    Jeffro Richards...
Do you have any game or educational software installed on the machine that requires a CD/DVD to be used?
Back some years ago I had a problem with the included software - World Book, which came with my eMac. One of the first bugs I had with the software is it would not allow my eMac to stay asleep. I would hear some access noise 3 or 4 minutes into sleep and the eMac would wake up. I just gave up and shutdown the machine in haste, thinking I was up against a brick wall.
Once I got more up to speed with Mac OS I learned of little helper thingies called Daemons (Daemons : A program or process that sits idly in the background until it is invoked to perform its task.) I now suspect there was a bug within something like that.
Now consider this for example, iTunes installs iTunesHelper to be ready to pick up on an audio disk. I do not suspect iTunes in your case but that is found in your System Preferences / System - Accounts / Your Account / Startup Items. Perhaps something is supposedly to be lurking in the background and it may have a furball causing your issue.
Barring that possibility, it could be possible an internal switch could have lost some factory adjustment, giving an errant signal something has been inserted into the optical. Expansion or contraction of working or sleeping could be an influence.

  • Please help dvd/cd-rom drive won't work

When I start computer the dvd/cd-rom drive is seen and works under  my computer (listed under other) but after an couple of minutes the drive has an red x and is listed as cd drive. There are times when it doesn't show up period. When I go under device manager I see and yellow exclamation mark. I cannot roll back (icon doesnt allow) and when I try to update it says that this version is the most update version. I have never personally tried to update this driver since I bought the computer it seems as if overnight there is a problem.
When I go to device manager and go to properties the message that appears is:  Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)
    I have a lenovo G575
    AMD E-350 processor 1.60 GHz,
    RAM 3.00 g.b.,
    Windows 7 64bit operating system.
I have tried to use the troubleshooting tool but it doesn't work.
Could someone give me step by step instructions on how to fix my computer.
    Thankyou in advance.

When you go to device manager for the device right click the drive and click Uninstall,AFTER and only after you do that download the correct driver from Lenovo's website and then install it.  It is generally best to totally uninstall old drivers before attempting updating to a new/different one as it can create issues like this.  Let me know if this worked for you.

  • BIOS Problems With CD\DVD Rom Drive. Not a Filter Problem

My Hp Laptop Was Messed up for a while with ramdom 2 sec restarts so i had a tech guy that i know and it was fixed. sadly after a few weeks my CD\DVD Rom drive quit working and was not (and still is) registered in Bios. i reset the BIOS Back to factory settings and had some luck. i worked fine but then when i woke up the next day i was gone again. i does do this often but im getting quite annoyed.. can someone help me with this issue.

Well, I now have the same symptoms as described in this discussion group. I'd put the CD in the superdrive for iTunes to burn, the computer accepts it, makes it's whirring noise (louder than a couple days ago), nothing comes on screen that says its able to read it, and around a minute or two it ejects the CD.
These larger 24inch iMacs are NOT the easiest to lug over to the Apple store, especially if taking mass transit! I have not found any solutions described here that works ...short of apple support.
I am a rather tidy and tech savvy person. No dirty CDs, no warped CDs, no inappropriate force to the drive, etc. Based on the number of similar postings, HAS APPLE ACKNOWLEDGED THIS AS A DRIVE DEFECT YET?
