1 Leopard + 6 Tigers

Hi - I am setting up a small school group.
I have a MBP17" running Leopard
They have 6 iBooks running Tiger
Could someone please direct me to a really simple explanation (idiot's guide) as to how to
1. Hook all these up via airport
2. What you can do now they are hooked up (I want mine to be in charge). Where can I see theirs..Finder?
Sorry I'm sure its not too difficult but I have stumbled again!
Many many thanks
Pete in London

You are leaving a lot of the details out, especially regarding the environment. Since you have not mentioned anything about internet access, if there is an existing LAN with a wireless base station, etc., I am going to assume that you have none of these and the machines will be used for instructional use only but no access to the internet or public or entity email. If my assumptions are wrong, then part of this does not apply:
1: Setting up an ad-hoc wireless network
If you want your Leopard Mac Book to be the master, go to the Airport menuette and select "Create Network." This will bring up a box that will let you define a name, select a channel, and optionally require a password (probably a good idea but not bullet proof). This will make you Mac Book the "base station" that other can connect to.
2: From all of the Tiger systems, go to the Airport menuette and select the network that you just created from the list of networks. Enter password if you defined one.
Now you have a mini network in which all systems can see each other. If you want to control the Tiger systems, then open System Preferences on on the Tiger machines and enable Apple Remote Desktop. Configure it so you can at least observe and control. Then on the Leopard system, dig deep into /System/Library/CoreServices/ and find the application Screen Sharing. You can use it to control and observe the other systems. For a great article on extending the capabilities of Screen Sharing, head over to http://www.macworld.com/article/131985/2008/02/2503geekfactor.html - this includes enabling a Bounjour browser.
And finally, if you want to provide file services, then from the Leopard system, go to System Preferences > Sharing and enable File Sharing. Choose the Options... button to enable only AFP and then define who can access the system.
With limited environment knowledge, I hope this helps.

  • Migration Assistant Problem Tiger to Tiger

I want to move the contents of a Macbook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo OS 10.6.8 to an iMac 2 GHZ Intel Core Duo OS 10.6.8. I ran a migration with a new User name on the iMac that was differentfrom the User name on the Macbook. The old user name had no contents when I open it on the iMac. There was no way to find the password on the other User Name I created on the iMac. Therefore, I trashed all users and started over.
However, when I try to set up migration assistant on the iMac, I get the message that the User Name I want to create to agree with the Macbook user name is not available because it exists on my iMac. How could this be since I trashed and emptied the trash of all other User Names? How do I get the User Name from the Macbook to be accepted on the iMac?
Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Thank you Eric. Yes, I deleted the user accounts through system preferences>users & groups in the iMac but had not deleted the user account in the MacBook.
I am transferring the data now and hopefully it will open fine in a couple of hours!
P.S. Obviously, it is Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard, not Tigers.

  • Leopards, Tigers, and AFP (oh my)

In our lab, we have several netboot machines and afp mounted home directories; so, users can login to any of the network machines and have their home environment.
Some of the computers were just updated to Leopard, while some remain with Tiger. After using iCal in Leopard, it seems that the next time the user logs into a Tiger machine, none of the updated information is in iCal (and, vice versa). Is there any way to keep iCal data in sync regardless of the OS that the user has most recently logged in to?

  • Leopard, iPhone, calendars  not syncing

I get this error message on both my desktop and my laptop:
"iTunes could not sync calendars to the iPhone "iPhone" because an error occurred while merging data."
As of right now only my iPhone has my current calendars, so I can't overwrite the iPhone calendar. If anything I need to overwrite the Mac's calendar.
Message was edited by: W. Robert Newberry

I have been having some weird things happening with iSync since upgrading to Leopard on a couple of my Macs. First of all when I try to sync the iPhone now I get a message saying that " iTunes could not sync mail accounts to the iPhone because an error occurred remapping record identifiers" A long call to iPhone support left them baffled too and the problem unresolved. This never happened in Tiger since getting the iPhone back in July, all syncs went just fine. Apple's "solution" right now is to have me turn off syncing the Mail accounts to the iPhone. That doesn't seem right because any account changes now have to be put into the Mac/s and iPhone manually and separately. Needs a fix.
Then trying to add a G5 running Tiger into the list of computers on the iSync chain, ( the other three Macs now running in Leopard ), bought in another raft of problems mainly all machines continuously asking for permission to sync each application/info' file all the time until I stopped the syncing by turning iSync off. Leopard doesn't seem to like Tigers around, I had to take the G5/Tiger OS machine out of the loop.
So hopefully we'll get fixes for these problems unless it's something I am doing wrong now under Leopard........
    Any ideas?

  • X11 fullscreen mode broken in Leopard - fix available / planned?

    Hello,
in Leopard, X11 fullscreen mode doesn´t work.
Is there already a fix available?
if not is a fix of this problem planned?
As we can see here: http://aaroniba.net/articles/x11-leopard.html it is possible to install Tigers X11, but I´d prefer a fix of the version, which comes with Leopard.
    Martin

    There is a fake way.
To fake fullscreen support with Xephyr:
    $ Xephyr -ac -fullscreen :9 &
    $ DISPLAY=:9 twm&
    $ DISPLAY=:9 xterm &
    It works ok on mine.

  • From Tiger to Leopard... Leopard to Snow Leopard..

    hello,
i'm currently using tiger on my macbook, and was thinking about upgrading to leopard or SL. i was reading info on SL and read that users of tigers must upgrade to leopard first before upgrading to SL. i was just wondering if that's true, and with my macbook hardware, should i even upgrade at all? thanks for reading.

To comply with the terms of the license, yes you must have Leopard installed on your Mac in order to qualify for the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade.
You can jump from Tiger right to Snow Leopard by buying the Snow Leopard Box Set with iLife and iWork.

  • Tiger adorer thinking about installing the Leopard...? :)

I have a leopard install disc in my biscuit tin and its been sitting in this container since I got my Macbook Pro in Oct 07 just before Apple ditched any remnants of the Tiger Mac OS X on it's computers and released the Leopard instead.
I have been using the Tiger and I love the "classic" Apple system but I want to ask anyone here at the Tiger forum why you haven't upgraded to the Leopard and instead stuck it out with the Tiger software?
Any replies would be useful to a seemingly anticipated question that the "Leopard" has left it's trail for us; the Tigers to ponder and be tempted with the possibility of the software upgrade to Leopard.
Ps I know the Leopard software has some new and interesting, breakthrough features ("Time Machine" and "Bootcamp" etc) the tiger does not have.

Why don't you simply search the forums for previous discussions on upgrading? Your question has been asked many times and answered many times.
Leopard has many new features. They are discussed in Apple's Leopard pages and tutorials. If you don't find these features compelling then don't update. No one is twisting your arm, and it's not that difficult a decision.
Get yourself an external Firewire drive. Install Leopard on it. Boot from it and use Leopard for a few days. If you like it then you can upgrade your system. If not then erase the external drive and use it for backup.

  • Leopard Search Function question

The new way for searching for files seems odd. Everything auto searches with the use of a smart folder. Which causes me to have to open home/Library and then search in the library manually. When i want to delete a program i search for all the plist files and etc that are related to that file. How can i do this with Leopard. Is there a way to use Tigers way for searching for files in the finder? It seems like i cant search in system files unless i open the folder directly and them search in them. Which means i cant do a full system search.
    Help

    Abot Leopard:
    1. Why do click in a Folder in the Dock (by default) does not open that folder?
in the form of fan or grid are OK. But for me that it has to be an option.
    2. Command-F is not the sane as in 10.4.
Why I can not set an specific search and kept it by default? For example, in 10.4, the 99% of my searches were By Name and includes. Now in 10.5.1 I have to click on the + symbol to set that specific criteria every time I want to perform a search...
The aspect of specific icons (Apps, Docs and so on) are very similar and confusing. Maybe they need the center draw to be in color?

  • Installed Lion but I want run Snow Leopard as well

I have installed Lion but I am having some issues with some apps. I thought that I could install Snow Leopard as a virtual machine so I could use those apps in SL, and still keep Lion.
Is that possible? Should I buy Snow Leopard or can I install this virtual machine using the DVD that I got when I bought my Mac?

    Barry Fass-Holmes wrote:
Could you please provide evidence which supports your claim that it's "a myth?"
Not really. I also cannot provide evidence that the legends of King Arthur, or Atlantis, or Bigfoot are myths. The lack of evidence that they are true is enough to place them in the category of myth. The inability to prove them false does not make them true. The same holds for the myth that "Snow Leopard is not licensed to be run in a virtual machine on a host Mac running Lion." That can be disproved simply by reading the Snow Leopard SLA, in which no such prohibition exists.
I would be very interested in seeing where Apple's EULA for Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion provides permission for users to install Snow Leopard in a virtual machine.
It isn't there. The idea that "it must be prohibited because the license does not specifically allow it" is absurd. If that method of interpreting licenses were correct, I could claim that running OS X while drinking coffee, or while wearing a three piece suit, or on a Mac in which the Apple logo has been covered over with a Detroit Tigers logo, are all prohibited, because the SLA doesn't explicitly permit them. Those are all absurd, of course; it is not a violation of the SLA to do any of those things. So it is with running Snow Leopard in a virtual machine. The license says that it must be a single copy only, running on Apple hardware. Running Snow Leopard in a virtual machine on a Mac with Lion as the host OS complies with the "one copy on Apple hardware" terms.
Lion's and Mountain Lion's EULAs do provide permission to install Lion or Mountain Lion (respectively) in a VM, but my reading of the EULAs is that Apple does not permit installation of Snow Leopard in a VM.
The 10.7 and 10.8 SLAs permit users to run up to three copies of the software simultaneously, one "directly" and up to two more in "virtual operating system environments". The 10.6 and earlier SLAs say one copy only, with no restriction on whether it is directly or in a virtual operating system environment. The term "directly" was added in the 10.7 and 10.8 licenses; it was not there in 10.6 and earlier. One copy of 10.6 running on Apple hardware is one copy of 10.6 running on Apple hardware, whether in a virtual machine or not.
Nowhere in the 10.6 SLA does it say that installing Snow Leopard in a VM is prohibited. Someone started that rumour and it has become one of the most pervasive bits of computer folklore in history. It is a myth.
I would be more than happy for you to demonstrate that I am incorrect.
I hope I have been helpful; let me know if there is any other information you need.

  • How the Leopard Killed the Tiger

Today I thought I'd take my work machine (G5) and install Leopard on a second internal drive while the top drive would not be effected and continue running Tiger and all my wares. All I'd have to is hold the option key on boot and select the appropriate OS. Well it didn't quite work out that way.
The first thing I did was install Tiger on the second drive just to make sure that I could do as above. Worked great. Then I installed Leo after all of Tigers updates. Worked fine...until I attempted to restart into Tiger, on the original top drive, and all it did after the initial boot was shutdown. Tried to boot again and same thing...shutdown. Then I ran Disk Utitity/Repair Disk from my Tiger disk and it said that there were serious errors ("Keys out of order. Rebuilding Catalog B Tree. The Volume XXXX could not be repaired". Why I wondered, I never touched that drive. How did installing on one drive affect the other?
Took the second drive (Leo) out and still have the same problem. Zapped the PRAM, nada. I hope an updated, new copy (42) of DW can fix things.
BTW, The only option I have available in DU is to reformat the drive. The drive is not available to do a fresh system install.
Any other suggestions other than DW?
    Thanks for any help

Ran DW this morning. The first attempt failed when the system locked up, so I gave it another try and then she fixed lots of errors:

  • When I sync my iPod to my MacBook through iTunes new events do not show up and old events are not deleted. I am using Snow Leopard  and not iSync.

I am using Snow Leopard on a MacBook. I have an iPod touch 3G. I do not use iSync it Mobile Me. When I sync my iPod through iTunes new events on my iPod do not show up on my Mac and old events do not delete. I have read help instructions that include deleting the data on the iPod. The iPod has the correct data and the Mac does not so I have not followed those instructions. I need help as the only reason I bought the Mac was to be able to sync, back up, view and print my calendar. Currently it is useless. • I have a 27 in. iMac with the latest version of Snow Leopard. When Lion comes out, will it be software I purchase and download online? I am trying to prepare for cost and don't have a point of reference, having been a Windows guy until last summer.

I want to know what to expect in terms of moving from one OS to another. Having been a Windows guy until last summer, my only experience is going from one version of Windows to another, which is usually a fairly costly purchase. I will want to go to Lion, but as a retired teacher, my income is fixed. I am not looking for a specific price, I am sure that is unknown, but I would just like to know help Apple does these things so I won't be sadly surprised.

Historically Apple has sold OS X upgrades via DVD media however with the advent of the Mac Apple Store that throws another possibility into the mix. That's about as much as I can say as these forums don't allow us to speculate about future products. As for the cost historically Apple has priced OS X upgrades between $29-$129, the last upgrade (Snow Leopard) was only $29 but that was an exception. Again we cannot speculate on these forums about that. The good news is that Apple is unlike Microsoft which makes OS upgrades expensive and complicated. The choice with OS X is do you want a server version (most users don't need one) or a single computer license. The users that buy server versions tend to have a number of Macs they manage from a server, most consumers don't have this issue.
Keep reading the news, as you know Apple has announced a Summer release for Lion.
Upgrades on OS X are usually very simple. I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard and each transition has been very easy. With any major OS upgrade there are some basic rules to follow, for example always, always, always backup prior to any update. When Lion is released to the general public post again for what to do to prepare or even do a Google search on "How to prepare for OS X upgrade" and you will find a number of articles that will provide some suggestions and valuable insight. You can also re-post here and users will be happy to assist.
