1 Minute Startup on 3G iPhone

I just bought a used iPhone 3G. I takes a long time to shut down, and starting up takes literally about 1 minute. Is this normal? If I restore it to original (through iTunes), would it be much faster? Thanks for answering my noob questions!

It's fine to turn a iPhone off, but I got the impression he was turning it on and off every few hours or possibly every time he was done using it. My dad used to turn his iPod Touch on and off every time he wanted to listed to a song.
Anyway, its not the type of gadget that needs to be turned off when your not using it for a hour or so.

I made a 3-minute movie with my iphone 4S. When I attempt to share it via email or message I get a message that says it is too long, that I should try to make a clip. Of course I had rather send the whole thing. What are the possibilities? I think my music and likely my videos and pictures are in the cloud.

Don't use WiFi for streaming video.  It is even worse for AirPlay since you are using bandwidth twice as it sends data from the iOS device to the router and then from the router to ATV.  Use an wired connection to go to ATV.   Even the high end consumer grade WiFi equitment is not great at doing streaming video.

    Apple's activation server is down.
I called Apple and the support team had the same issue.

  • Screen stuck on It may take a few minutes to activate your iphone

My iPhone 5S is screen stuck on the "It may take a few minutes to activate your iphone" screen. When I plug it into my computer, it is not recognized. When I plug it into the wall, it begins to charge the phone. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Problem solved! I had to go to the local Apple Store and they just restored it back to factory settings. Then just used my backup from iCloud to put it back just how it was. Thanks for your input!

  • Is it possible to buy minutes and put on iphone?

My uncle and his wife recently got the two new iphones. They gave me their old iphones (3gs) but they dont have any service on them. And i dont want to go through a contract with another phone company. So i was wondering if its possible to buy minutes (Pay As you Go) and put it on my iphone and make it work

Contact the carrier and find out if that is an option.
Apple only makes the phone, they do not provide service.

  • 30 minute video tutorial on iPhone 3G

I started to watch this the other day from Apple's web site but now can't find it. The instructor is Apple's Bob Borchers. Anyone know where I can find it?

Thanks, Matthew. I've seen the one you pointed me to but was looking for another, more detailed one (referenced below), that lasts about 30 minutes. Maybe I'm confused.
Some info on the 30 minute one:
NEW YORK One of the most talked-about aspects of the Apple iPhone 3G is an approximately half-hour instructional video on Apple.com that lovingly details each new feature and function. But if you really think about it, it's a 30-minute advertisement, said Charles Golvin, principal analyst at Forrester Research. The educational strategy, employing senior director of worldwide iPhone product marketing Bob Borchers as the instructor, is not the first time the company has done this, but it's the longest tutorial to date for Apple. (Borchers has demonstrated his expertise in other how-to videos.)

  • 45 minutes + to backup an iPhone?

The iTunes backup process is necessary, I get that...especially with the third party apps running on the phone - but does it honestly take an 8 gig, 1st generation iPhone 45 minutes (and counting) to backup?l This is USB 2? I've got larger firewire/USB drives that backup more information and much larger individual files quicker. Apple you've got to fix this - we're told interrupting a backup is dangerous - but who has an hour to commit to this?

    Search the forums first: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1607802&tstart=0
Theres my thread with many replies that will help you.
And your lucky with 45+ min. I get 3 hour backups

  • 4 minute Startup in 10.5

I switched to a new iMac 10.5 from Windows about a month ago.I installed several programs almost immediately including Microsoft Office 2004. When trying to open a Powerpoint file the the whole thing froze up. So I uninstalled that program. Since then startup takes nearly 4 minutes.
    A gray screen for 1m 18 sec.
    A whirling planet from 1m 18s. until 3m 27 sec.
The Apple symbol from 3m 27 s. until 3m 53 s. and the desktop is ready to use.
I fear that to remedy this I might have to do a clean install. However,as I have little idea of what I am doing it scares the daylight out of me.I do have Time Machine working with an external drive and a book, The Missing Manual by David Pogue. However, it doesn't seem to answer my question apart from mentioning very briefly Disk Utility
Maybe, given my ignorance, my best bet would be to continue as I am doing: putting the Mac to sleep when finished, and only rebooting occasionally, say once a week, and waiting the required 4 minutes. Does this have any undesirable consequences I am unaware of?
Any helpful comments would be very appreciated.

First off, Mac OS X doesn't have a "clean install" option:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Office 2004 is now outdated, and version 2008 is now available for the Mac.
You might want to consider one of these alternatives as many people have had issues with Office for the Mac*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html
Putting the machine to sleep is problematic especially if you have any non-Apple devices hooked up. This may be the sources of the build up of corrupt files on your system that is causing a slow system startup. After the next time machine backup, let us know, and we might be able to troubleshoot further.

  • IMovie09 Hangs when importing 3 minute .MOV recorded from iPhone 3GS,

    Hi All,
Ok, so I have had a quick search to solve this but had no luck, and I am a Mac newbie, so please be gentle
Here is my problem - I recorded one of my kids singing a song with my iPhone, sync'd this up with iTunes, converted it to iPod compatible within iTunes (for the iPod video to be able to chew it).
Now, we have an xmas idea for the grandparents, that we can get both kids singing songs, video them and give the grandparents a dvd for xmas
Hurdle 1: When I try to import the .MOV or the converted for iPod Video friendly version into iMovies, I get the beachball/hourglass.. The video that I'm trying to import is 3.4 mins in length - I tried several times, and this morning left it running when I left for work, so it has had 13 hours of processing and no joy, so I have had to force app to exit again... (Hey, I though macs just 'worked', what's this ctrl-alt-del stuff :P )
This is the first time I have loaded iMovie and I have tried logging in with a new account too in case something has got mashed with my main account.
The mac is 3 months old and I am still finding out what apps it has
Thanks for any help / pointers My backup plan (already working) is to continue on my windows PC, as that seems to quite happily play with the .MOV file etc, but I would rather use the mac as it should be better geared for this stuff But tbh I am struggling already to get the mac to do it's thing - I thought iphone -> mac would just 'work'
Oh..I have installed nothing else on the mac apart from snow leopard & configured email accounts and the iMac came with iLife 09 installed.
    ty in advance
    Andy

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
I didn't have iPhoto launching when i connected my iPhone, but I've launched it manually now.
This time, in iMovie, I have 48 images appearing in 'iPhoto videos' under the event section of iMovie.
Is this the correct behaviour ? Or should I only see one image to represent the video (Asking because if I have 3-4 movies on the iphone, I will have a lot of thumbnail images in the event window I think.
Just for the sake of it, I tried importing the video again ( to see if things worked after using iPhoto), and iMovie still beachballs, but if I can use the iPhoto method that is fine, although it seems odd behaviour to be presented with 48 'images' of the same movie.
Would I need to run everything through iPhoto before it appears in iMovie ? I'm guessing that the import movie selection doesnt work..
Thanks for replying, and feel free to point out any newbie basics that I am misunderstanding

  • 12 Minute Startup, Safari Doesn't Launch... HELP!

    Hi everyone,
Sorry for the length, but I thought the more information of what I saw, and know, I give the better.
This is my issue! And it needs to get resolved quickly because I need to work on my portfolio/application for college ASAP!! grumbles
Last night I was working on said application (I think I had Microsoft Word, Safari, Adium (instant messenger) and a few folders open at that point), while listening to music on iTunes, which was updating my podcasts list by downloading some new ones. I have no idea what happened but everything just started getting really slow. Rolling beachball galore! The song I was listening to started stopping and starting randomly, page loading was crappy, I tried closing safari down, I tried closing whatever I could, but wasn't able to, either the rolling beachball was rolling, or when I did have a cursor i would hover over the close button at the top, and nothing would happen. No hover effect, no response. Gr. I thought it was because of my podcasts, since there were a few being downloaded, so I just walked away from my computer a bit and let it sort itself out.
Came back. It improved a bit, I was able to close stuff down. I could tell though that things were not normal. So I restarted it.
Restarting took FOREVER! I timed it. 12ish minutes.
It got past the gray loading screen. That part seemed normal. But when it got to the desktop I could hear the computer working, not like a constant buzzing/working sound, but it would buzz/work like every 3 or 4 seconds. At one point the fan REALLY kicked in. Then died down to the normal.
It took a 3 or 4 minutes alone to get my icons on my desktop to load... then another 3 or 4 minutes to load the clock and what not at the top right of the screen. I could still hear it was working away so I let it do it's thing. So a total of 12 minutes later, it sounded fine and looked like it was ready to go.
I clicked Safari. It bounced for a while. Did nothing. Clicked it again. Nothing.
So I thought ok... since I don't shut down my computer every time I'm not using it, it was probably doing a HUGE update after this restart. So I restarted it again.
Did the exact same thing, no fan action this time though. Except this time, the Safari icon changed both on the dock AND in the applications folder. To the blank page with the ruler and whatever else it is (it's the little icon besides the word Applications in Finder). So I was like... ummm corrupted?!?! I don't know. It's not working. And I don't have another web browser on my mac so I can't uninstall Safari and go download it again off the web. Gr.
It seems like everything else is working ok. iTunes loaded at a normal speed.
Just the start up time is ridiculous and safari is NOT working.
I'm at work right now, so I don't have access to my Mac right now. These are the stats for it though, I am 95% sure about them, they're off the top of my head.
    It's running Tiger OS X
    2.14GHz
    2GB RAM (I am not 100%)
    160GB
I am not a happy camper right now! Especially when I have two weeks to get my ONLINE portfolio and application organized and ready to go! cries

Open Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the Processes drop down menu. Click on the CPU% column then click again to sort in descending order. See if you have any processes using a large percentage of CPU time. With all your usual applications running review your memory usage statistics as well: Active RAM, Free RAM, and Inactive RAM in particular.
BTW, given the number of applications you have loaded in a 2 GB memory system I'm not surprised the computer is grinding to a halt. Try running fewer apps at one time. This may especially important if Word is not the 2008 version because the older versions must use Rosetta emulation which takes more memory (and is slower in general.)
    Do some timely maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • New Air 1 minute startup

    Hi,
I bought the new 13" Macbook Air 2 weeks ago and the total boot time is about 1 minute. It holds on a white screen for about  45 seconds after the Apple logo and cog appears but before the desktop appears. Various YouTube videos of the new Air show it booting in 16-19 seconds so I do not think this is normal. All I have installed is Firefox and DavMail. I verified the disk and repeaired permissions and called Apple support who had me do the same but the problem persists.
Has anybody else experienceed this? Any ideas what the problem could be?
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Jay,
The most common cause will be what is listed in your Login Items. Navigate to System Preferences - Users and Groups - Login Items. If you see apps in there you don't want to launch on login then highlight them and click the - symbol below.
If that doesn't do it then I'd recommend restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more has become corrupt.

We're Sorry, Activation Server Temporarily Unavailable, contact Customer Care...Your request Could Not Be Completed?"
99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, you need to get a sim card from the carrier the phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, if you want to activate it. Because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.
Apple has started to get "tough" with hacked iPhones, & simply won't permit their activation.
