1 month old macbook sounds like a hair blower while playing movies

Today for the first time I played a movie on my mac and it sounded like a hair dryer/blower during that time, is it normal?
Is there any option to reduce the fan noise?
Any tips or advice will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

It's normal.
The fans are cooling down the spinning DVD drive and the computer showing the movie.
If you load a YouTube movie, it'll probably do the same.

My Mail program has gone south on Leopard on my 27-month old Macbook. I can't send, even though the server details are correct. I tried reinstalling the Mail program from the install DVD, but no go; apparently that two-year old Mail is no longer compatible with my up-to-date Leopard. I tried deleting the account (hotmail) from Mail and setting up a different account (Yahoo). After loading all the inbox two things happened: first, I still couldn't send, and second, when I closed the Mail window the whole inbox then disappeared and doesn't come back. Although I couldn't reinstall the Mail program from the install DVD, would it still be possible to reinstall the whole system from that DVD? If I do, will I lose files or will there be another problem since that DVD is now over two years old?
Thanks for any suggestions; they will be much appreciated.
P.S. I've just noticed that now I can't change the desktop picture: I go through the motions in Preferences, but the new picture doesn't appear on the desktop. Is there a systemic problem?

You are waiting for an apology to something that happened over a year ago? Really? This is why there is a manager in the store. You have a problem with an employee you speak to the manager. Just like you did on the phone. You would have gotten your apology in July 2013.
Here is the information about your upgrade fee.
    Upgrade Fee
It is because when you have a problem you (customers) go running to the store and want to take up the time of the reps to fix it. Other carriers have third parties that deal with technical support and those locations are few and far between. VZW provides this directly through their stores. Also, when you subsidize a $650 and pay $200 VZW has to pay $400. Your monthly service fee doesn't begin to scratch the surface of paying that back. Not with all the money that is put into the network and its improvements.
Then over a year later you get someone on the phone who apologized and offered to waive the fee on your phone and you didn't take it? That offer won't come down the pike again.
One thing you should know is that all these employees are people and as such they sometimes come off cross. I doubt that you speak to everyone so sweetly all the time. Cut them a little slack and put this whole thing behind you after 15 months. Either upgrade with VZW or move on.

The battery in my 2-month old MacBook Pro seems to be losing charge more quickly.  Also does not charge to 100% as it used to when new.

    Hi A,
You have 3 months of free AppleCare phone support, and a 1 year hardware warranty. If I was concerned about anything on my new MBP, I'd contact Apple.

  • Getting the run around from apple regarding my defective 4 month old MacBook.  What options do I have?

Purchased a MacBook pro 4 months ago.  After 1 week, wavy lines showed up on the monitor and the genius bar deemed the "mother board" to be defective and a new MacBook was issued to me.  This Monday,  the monitor went blank and again brought it to the genius bar.  The tech stated the monitor had to be replaced and he could do it later that day.  Now it's three days later and the computer is still not fixed and another part has to be ordered which wont be in for another three days.
Besides the awful communication Apple has shown me (waiting on hold for 20 plus minutes to get through to the genius bar) I am beyond appalled at the level of quality with the MacBook.  I realize Apple has a cult following but I have never owned a computer with so many problems, especially in the first 4 months.  I am loyal to Apple as I have both an iPad and an iPhone but this is definitely testing my loyalty.  My question to these readers is how can I address my concerns to Apple?
Thanks for reading and thanks for your help.

It sounds like the store tried to do you a favor and it blew up in their face. In many stores, a screen replacement would be sent to a regional depot for repair. This takes shipping both coming and going, plus repair time in the depot.
If they encountered an additional bad part, and had to order it in, that may take the quoted three days at the depot or at the store. Then additional Repair time.
I think you have been very unlucky, but I don't think you are being abused.
I remember when local repair places had rooms full of spare parts, but that is becoming less true in every business. ( I remember when people did not have computers in their homes, as well, but that is not helpful in this situation.)

  • One month old macbook pro got hang(freeze) once, and kernel panic once: should i need to take some actions or its ok??

my macbook pro 13.3 (OS XLion 10.7.4) is one month old, few days ago  it got freezed(hanged) at that time only 2 apps were running google chrome and xcode, i pressed power button (hold it for few seconds) to restrat.
Today when i opened the lid(as my mac was on sleep for last one hour- no apps except finder was running) i saw an error like this "mac encountered an error hold your power button for few seconds to restart......blah blah..something in other languages too", i think some where it used the word "kernel panic".
After restart mac said "your computer restarted because of a reason", below i have copy pasted the reason.
Please suggest me its(this behavior is) okie or should i take it to apple center?, also to note i have never played any game on my mac. Can any body suggest me why this kernel panic happened by seeing the reason below.
Now i am afraid to leave my mac at sleep with unsaved data and that was the exact reason i shifted from windows to mac.

I have had a 15" Late 2011 model MBP since December and have never had a kernel panic.
If I do I would take it in for a check up.

  • I need to upgrade my Mac, is there anyway I can swap my 4 month old Macbook Pro for a iMac or something with a bit more kick? (for video editing)

I would ideally like to upgrade to a new model iMac, as they and my Macbook Pro 15inch, only 4 months old go for about the same price.
Is there any way I can do this through Apple or would I have to go about it in another way. I would like to minimise spending and ideally would not like to buy a completely new computer. What I'm asking, really, is if I can trade the two?

No you cannot trade in. Sell you MBP on eBay for the best value. The best 'bang for your buck' currently offered directly from Apple is their certified refurbished machines:

  • Strange fan noize with black macbook, sounds like a cow!

    Hi
The fan noize on my macbook has been getting worse and worse as i go, its been almost a year since i had it and now its starting to really make seriously LOUD noize, at times it sounds like a cow choking on and off.
While the computer is under a insurance which covers any accidents or things like this, i am hoping i can do something before i bring it to the store i got it from and wait a month before i get it back.
    can anyone advise here?

Sounds like a cow eh? You might have a case of the moos.
No kidding! This was a common problem on early core duo MacBooks.
You can also listen to a mooing MacBook here.
Macbook 2GHz, Core Duo, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

  • Why does my Macbook sound like the cd drive is starting  every time i wake my computer up?

When I wake up my macbook it sounds like its grinding a disc in the drive. There is no disc inserted. What could cause this?

More precisely I can see that I have got email, as it says the number 4 next to the Hotmail account but it doesnt show any of the messages.

  • Several problems with 8 month old MacBook Pro 17"

    Please help!
*My macbook pro is making a VERY high-pitch noise, so loud it causes me to have a headache if I use it too long.
*My usb ports (all of them) quit randomly and not just with one device. My logitec headset quits in the middle of a conversation, my laptop cooler stops all the time (I notice this more often than I do the headset because the cooler is on all the time, unlike the headset), and my flash drive and iPod are unresponsive sometimes too.
*My power supply is SO hot that I worry that it will catch something on fire.
I've run every firmware update I can find and nothing seems to help anything. Should I just make the 4 hour drive to the apple store to have it checked out? Has anyone else had these problems?
    MacBook Pro 17" Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    MacBook Pro 17" Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi bamagirl,
It definately sounds like you are having hardware issues, the 4 hour drive is probably the best solution to get it fixed/replaced. You are still under warranty so any issues with the hardware will be solved for you
Make proper backups of all your data before bringing it in.
You can boot up from the osX DVD holding the "d" key to run an extensive hardware test and see if that gives you any specific errors. Either way... i'd take it in for repairs asap.
    Good luck.
Edit: Do those issues still occur if you don't use the cooling pad ?

  • 3 Month old laptop performing like its 7 years old

    Hi
My HP notebook is 3 months old but is performing like it is 7 years old.  It is extremely "laggy" and struggling to perform even the simplest of tasks.  I am constantly getting the "not responding" dialogue at top of screen and the mouse curser lags and jolts.  I am not a gamer nor do I download movies or music.  It is only ever used for browsing.    I have done several whole computer scans and found no viruses or malware.  I did a number of system restores, but to no avail.  I then did a "refresh" using the update and recovery section of my pc.  Unfortunately this has not helped.
Has anyone any suggestions as to why this woud be happening? It is still under warranty as only 3 months old and to be honest I just want it gone.  I'm now back to using my old Asus which is 5 years old and performing light years ahead of the HP.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

    Hi T4M,
Thanks for your response.  Yeah, it came with windows pre-installed.  I just opened it up and turned it on.   I am not very tech savvy so I hope I give you the correct information...
    the processor etc is...
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4030U CPU @ 1.90GHz
    Operating System:  Windows 8.1 64-bit
    4GB
    Hard Drive: HGST HTS541010A9E680
Any suggestions what I should do?
    Many thanks

  • My month-old MacBook Pro 13in freezes all the time

I don't know what the deal is, every time I watch videos on websites other than YouTube, such as Hulu, or download I guess what could be considered relatively hearty software i.e. Photoshop, or end a Skype call, my computer freezes. Like entirely. I can't move the cursor, no sound, and I have to manually reboot the system with the on/off button so that I can use it again. It started doing this maybe the third day I had it, but I didn't take it up with Apple initially because I didn't realize that the problem would become chronic. I've taken it to the Genius Bar twice and they have yet to shed much light other than offer the theory that Flash Player may be outdated or in need of being reinstalled, and I've done that; no luck. I had Apple keep the computer for a few days to run diagnostics but they told me nothing in regards to anyhting being wrong with it. This is beyond frustrating. Any ideas? I'll be back at Apple tomorrow to give it yet another go.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or shutdown failure, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • X Through battery icon, no LED light on MagSafe, 2 month old Macbook Pro

This all started this afternoon. I noticed a black X through the battery icon in the upper tool bar, then noticed that there was no LED light on the MagSafe charger. The fan on my computer was also constantly running. This computer is only TWO months old. Since day one I have run the battery down before re-charging. This should have properly calibrated the battery.
Is there some simple fix for this or do I have to take time out of my life during the holiday season, trek to the mall and pray that someone at the genius bar has time to resolve this issue? Hoping there is a saint here somewhere to help me out

    MamaGG:
    Call Apple Care (800) 275-2272.
Your computer is warranted for 1 year for Hardware and for 3 mos, I believe, for free phone tech support.
They may have you take it to the Apple Store near you for the "genius" to work on it.
Have you Serial Number handy. Locate it from the "Apple Icon" drop down menu on the left and side of the upper title Bar and open up "About this Mac" and open up "more info" and then "Hardware".
They have the best support in the industry.
Meanwhile consider getting the Apple Care Add on package for the MB Pro. It extends this Hardware coverage for 3 years and provides free Apple Care Phone Tech support for that time.
I have had it on all my Macs which I have owned. The phone support is well worth it.

  • Cartridge holder makes a sound like a machine gun when it moves to the right just before printing

Product is HP Deskjet 4440 all in one.  OS is Windows XP.
When the cartridge holder goes clear to the right just before printing it makes a loud noise like a machine gun just before it starts printing.  It prints fine.  But sounds like the cartridge holder is sticking and makes this machine gun like sound.

    Hi @gramdeb,
I see by your post that the carriage makes a loud noise when it moves to the right, but you can still print. I can help you with this.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Remove and reinsert the cartridges, to make sure that they are correctly installed in the unit.
I have provided this document for different areas of the printer to check for any obstructions or broken parts in the carriage path. 'Paper Jam' Message Displays on the Computer. Disregard the title.
Did you just change out any of the cartridges?
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
