1-Pass or 2-Pass??

I asked this question in the AME forum earlier and have received no comments, so I thought I would try here as well.
I'm just curious what others have experienced.
As an experiment I used a 30 second AVCHD clip that had a few effects added and encoded it to H.264-Blu-Ray using 1-Pass, then again using 2-Pass.  All other settings were the same for each.
When I play both of the resulting clips I can see absolutely no difference in the picture quality.
Other than taking twice as long to process, what benefit should I be getting from 2-Pass?  I fully understand the purpose of 2-Pass, but the few times I have tried it I haven't seen any resulting benefit, so I'm just curious what others have experienced.  Perhaps there are some specific conditions where 2-Pass will actually produce a better final product??  Are there specific video effects or filters that end up looking better if 2-Pass is applied??
Any thoughts??
Jim

Harm,
Yeah, I know what you mean.  The test clip I was using has a fair amount of fast motion in it, but I have some clips with fall leaves blowing in a soft wind like you describe.  That may make a better test for me.
In the end I will likely just stick with 2-Pass, but it is interesting to explore just what makes the differences in quality between the two choices.
Thanks,
Jim

  • Differences between 2 pass and 1 pass compressing in compressor 2.0

Is there a noticeable difference between 2 pass and 1 pass compression? It seems to me that sometimes 1 pass looks better than 2 passes. Strange...
    Thanks,

    Hey Girshon
this is more of a compressor forum question, but i can answer it here
theoritically, a 2 pass VBR encode is a MUCH better option if you are limited to space with VERY complex scenes. a cbr encode is optimal for short encodes, or encodes where you have NO space limitation. of course this is how most encoders work.
in compressors case, for SOME reason (unbeknown to me) a 2 pass vbr does not encode to a quality that where i can call acceptable, especially with accepatable bit-rates.
this problem has seemed to come in compressor v2. a lot of people that use this version of compressor seem to recommend a CBR in compressor or a 2 pass vbr IN DVD SP.
compressor v1 seems not to have this problem however. as a matter of fact, a lot of other DVD encoder, software or hardware dont seem to have this problem.
if you do a search for 2 pass vbr in the compressor forums, you will see all the quality problems associated with compressor 2.

  • Subroutine Pass by Value, Pass by Reference using xstring

    Hi,
I am trying to check the difference between pass by value, pass by reference, pass by return value to a subroutine. When I tried integers as parameters the following functionality worked. When I am using xstring as parameters I am not getting desired results.
Some one please explain me how the xstring's are passed to a subroutine.
Here I am giving the code and output of the code.
    data : s_passbyref    type xstring,
           s_passbyval    type xstring,
           s_passbyretval type xstring.
    * Pass by Value, Pass by Reference, Pass by return value - STRINGS
    s_passbyref     = 'ABCD'.
    s_passbyval     = 'ABCD'.
    s_passbyretval  = 'ABCD'.
    write : / 'ByRef :', s_passbyref, 20 'By Val :', s_passbyval, 40 'By Return Value : ', s_passbyretval.
    perform call_str_sub using s_passbyref s_passbyval changing s_passbyretval.
    write : / 'ByRef :', s_passbyref, 20 'By Val :', s_passbyval, 40 'By Return Value : ', s_passbyretval.
    form call_str_sub using ps_passbyref value(ps_passbyval) changing value(ps_passbyretval).
      ps_passbyretval = 'XYZ'.
      ps_passbyref    = 'XYZ'.

    write : / 'ByRef :', s_passbyref, 20 'By Val :', s_passbyval, 40 'By Return Value : ', ps_passbyretval.

  • Previous Purchases not applied to Season-Pass or Multi-Pass?

I’ve purchased 15 episodes of Lost, Season 2, and when I try to buy a Season Pass for that Season, the iTunes Store wants me to buy these episodes again. Since iTunes is adding the Season-Pass or Multi-Pass in the middle of the season, I would think they would apply what I’ve purchased so far to the Season Pass. What do you Think?

Just keep on buying episode by episode - previously purchased episoded aren't applied to to a multi-pass in order to reduce its price.

  • Pass by querystring || pass by parameter || pass by session

i have an administration page of folders created by users...lets call it main.jsp
from main.jsp user can create a new folder and also can edit an existing folder...both action will be processed on the same script lets call it folder_action.jsp
but folder_action.jsp must understand if it is a new folder creation "mode" or editing an existing folder "mode"...
so whats the best and secure way to do it?
passing the "mode" with querystring? passing the "mode" with hidden form parameters or passing it by sessions
plz show me a secure and modular way
    thanks a lot
    Burak

well, since main.jsp is probably having a form or link to click to go to folder_action.jsp, then you have to use query string or POST forms (forms only, not for links) to pass the data you want.
If you want security, you need to use SSL for the connection.

  • 1-pass or 2-pass? Max out the bitrate?

I'm putting out my final, final bluray of an independent feature, so want to get the highest quality possible. (Final in the sense that it's the one I want to show people.)
From FCP 7 I have an 82-minute ProRes 422 Quicktime that I want to make into a BluRay.
I have had a rough time getting my movie encoded (both in AME and in Encore) and finally gave up and went, within Encore, with a default setting that had 1-pass vbr and I forget how low a bitrate. I was so excited when I finally got a disk in my hand, and then I realized that the image is just a little soft. I've never seen it this soft and of course it's a bit depressing.
Other than the time it takes to encode (or within Encore, transcode), is there anything wrong with setting everything as high as it can go? I just want it to look good. What is the optimum range of bitrate? And is it only too obvious that two VBR passes at the material would lend a better image? Are there any other variables that I should be aware of?
    THANK YOU!

    Thanks for the reply.
Source is ProRes 23.98 full HD. My AME settings were "h.264 bluray" and I defaulted to all its choices, including "matching attributes".
Basically I was hoping I could encode in AME and then do mulitple copies on Encore, without the dreaded "need-to-transcode" (since I thought I had that covered in AME).
Encore was not a problem so much as, what seemed to be, a desire to transcode each time. (I have since been advised that it might have just been building, not transcoding.)

  • Issues with Size of FLV VBR 2-pass vs 1-pass Encoding in CS6

    Hey Everyone,
I've been doing some testing on various systems (using either Windows 7 or Windows 8 Consumer Preview) using Premiere Pro CS6 as well as Media Encoder 6 and I've noticed that encoding FLV files using VBR 2-pass encoding produces a file that is significantly larger than the same source file encoded using just a VBR 1-pass.
For example, one test that I ran used 10 seconds of DVCPRO HD 720P 29.97 footage as source material. I exported all clips exported as .flv, 960x540 square pixels, 29.97 fps, 1000 kbps and everything else left at default settings.
    Here were my results:
Size of Export via Premiere Pro CS5 VBR 1pass: 1.564 MB
Size of Export via Premiere Pro CS5 VBR 2pass: 1.618 MB
Size of Export via Premiere Pro CS6 VBR 1pass: 1.450 MB
Size of Export via Premiere Pro CS6 VBR 2pass: 3.622 MB
Eric Addison of 100 Acre Films also ran a similar test on his system and got these results:
Encoding 10 secs of a P2 AVC-I 1280x720, 29.97 clip using the same settings as above to FLV
    Premiere CS6 Export VBR 2 pass – 2.87 MB
    Premiere CS6  Export VBR 1 pass – 1.55 MB
    AME 6 Export VBR 2 Pass – 2.85 MB
I've tested this out with short clips, ~3 min sequences, raw clips, and clips with lots of effects, and I continue to get consistent results with the VBR 2-pass file being anywhere from 30% up to 300% larger than the same clip encoded using just 1-pass encoding. Again, this doesn't occur using Premiere Pro CS5 or 5.5 (or AME 5), so it appears to be just an issue within CS6.
Would anyone else be willing to run a similar test using their system and own source files and post your results in this thread to determine if this is a system-wide issue or just flukes?
    Thanks!

Just checking if there's any progress on this?
    We're having a similar problem, I just made a bug report. -
    Concise problem statement:
With CS6, rendering Flash Video files using AME creates files that are unuseable.  They have bad flickering, and look like files that have been encoded with half the bitrate.  This happens on all of our cs6 workstations, and has been happening since we moved to cs6.  Our workaround is to render the file to a 30mbps H264 file, then open cs5.5 media encoder and transcode it to flash, where it renders them perfectly, as it used to!  This is happening on projects where there have been no changes at all between cs5.5 and cs6 - we can render exactly the same timeline out of premiere pro in cs5.5 and it looks fine, then in cs6 it looks like crap.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
Render an on2 vp6 flash video out of premiere pro.
    Results:
Any parts of the video with gradients or hard colour contrast will look like crap, either blocky or blurry, like it's been encoded at a super low bitrate.
    Expected results:
This is happening on all sorts of projects - stuff with titles generated in premiere pro, stuff with PNG files in it, stuff with sony EX1 footage, with segments of uncompressed video rendered in after effects,...  basically everything.
Since filing the bug report, I've read this thread and worked out that like you guys it does only happen for us with 2 pass encoding.  So at least now we have a better workaround than transcoding, we can just export in 1 pass.  I don't like having to do that.  Yes, probably loads of people can't tell the difference between 1 and 2 pass and blah blah blah other codecs are better, we all know that!  We have to use on2 VP6, for lots of annoying reasons, one big one being that we have a lot of corporate clients who put our videos on their intranet, and don't let their staff update their media players, browsers, OS's etc. - so the only video they can reliably use for everyone is an on2 VP6 file.  Anyway, would be great to have a fix, we're only just making back all the time we lost from having to transcode all our Sony EX1 footage that premiere pro cs6 couldn't deal with (that tearing issue is now fixed, thank f*ck).  I doubt I'm going to be able to justify spending loads of money on upgrading to cs7 when it comes out after all the bugs we've had to deal with in this one.

  • Multi-Pass or Season Pass?

How do I know which one I purchased? My Purchase History does not indicate one way or the other. I thought I had paid for a "season pass" for Battlestar Gallatica season 3 (in fact my purchase history shows a $42.42 charge for Battlestar Gallatica season 3 but doesn't elaborate). Today I got an e-mail saying that my "multi-pass" couldn't be renewed (which is not a surprise as I've changed banks recently) but why would it need to be renewed? I thought I had a season pass. Besides that issue, the season is over now and I've downloaded all the episodes, why would Apple need to charge me for any more? Also, it's interesting that I was charged (a total including tax) of $42.42 when the current "season pass" is only $34.99 (which would be $38.09 with tax) in the first place... It would seem to me that Apple should be refunding me $4...
    -Doug

OK - Just trying to clarify things here.
    1) There is not a MultiPass option for shows like BattleStar Galaactica (Great show BTW). You can only purchase the Season Pass.
    2) I got an email from iTunes giving me free video credits since the Season was shorter than was originally predicted. I found the email and here's an the jist of it:
"Thank you for purchasing the Season Pass for Battlestar Galactica - Season 3. Due to a change in the number of episodes the network plans to air, the Season Pass price for Battlestar Galactica - Season 3 has been reduced.
We want you to be completely satisfied with your Season Pass purchase, so please accept this free video code, good for any five $1.99 TV show episodes or music videos on the US iTunes Store."
    3) So the MultiPass email you received was for a different show or a glitch in the system (maybe caused by the shorten season?). Did the email specifically mention "Battlestar?" Anyway, since it didn't renew, you weren't charged for anything.

  • 2 pass vs 1 pass

I am about to encode an entire DVD but before I do I want to find out if 1 pass is going to produce a smaller file than a 2 pass encode. Quality does matters but I am preparing footage for iPhone distribution so the screen size it will playback on is going to be small. I want to be able to save space on the encode so what will add the most compression?

2 pass will be of higher quality at a "possibly" lower data rate. VBR will usually make a lower data rate than CBR rates, but a 2 pass looks at the video, and analyises it frame by frame, so it knows where to perform a higher data rate and place "i" frames to reduce artifact. Takes twice as long, but is a superior encode than a single pass VBR.
However a single pass CBR can be of an all "high" data rate, and be a strong encode.. sort of depends on what you're encoding. Talking heads? CBR. Lots of movement and dissolves? VBR 2 pass...

  • Sungle pass vs. multi pass

I'm trying to export 3 45 min HD sequences 960x540 to H.264 format. Time is of the essence, so I don't have the option to wait for a multi-pass encode in compressor, does anyone know how to change the setting to a single pass option?

    Nevermind, solved my own problem.

  • Problem with Season Passes and lack of customer service.

I haven't received emails from Apple stating that episodes were available to download for 2 shows that I subscribe to. I have emailed them and received the usual, customary and "automated" response. I received a free video credit to manually purchase one of the episode's that had not downloaded automatically. After using the credit for another show, I was unable to purchase videos for a few minutes due to error messages and other issues. After logging off and logging back into my account, I was able to purchase videos again.
In Manage Passes under Current Passes, I have multiple shows that show "## episodes awaiting download". I have the same the same message under Completed Passes. I have successfully downloaded the majority of these episodes.
Has anyone experienced these same problems? If so, how long did it take to get the problem resolved? Were attorneys involved?

    Hi,
It sounds like a mapping problem. Just to make sure, check that all the table fields are mapped correctly (check them in the dynamic expression editor).
Also, make sure that all the fields from the table are selected and mapped at the BAPI input. If there are fields you don't want to pass, you can pass =null to them.
    Best regards,

  • Doing a 7 or 35 pass erase with Disk Utility?

    Hi,
Awhile ago my hard drive got rewritten over by WindowXP and a month and a half later I found out that residue was left behind with weird looking things in my Core Services folder.
So I want to do a secure erase. Should I do a 7 pass or 35 pass option?
Also when I put my TIger disk in the my DVD slot for the erase am I choosing the main part where it says 149.10 GB ST13086.... or the indented part where it says Macintosh HD?
If I select the main part 149.10 GB ST 130608 it says untitled for the name, do I leave it like that if I choose this option?
    S.

    sig,
So I can choose Macintosh HD and then security option and then do the 7 pass erase (not worried about the FBI, just want my Windows stuff completely gone)? Do I need to erase the free space first?
