1 ROUTER...3 computers

Do I have to run Verizon In Home Assistant on the other 2 to WIRE them to the router..
What I'm trying to do is set all 3 up on  1 router
I prefer NOT to go wireless due to the fact we live in an apartment

Assuming you have something like the Westell 327W, all you need to do is connect the computers the LAN ports on the router. There is no need to download Verizon's Home assistant on any computer unless you plan to use the features.
The router and most versions of Windows are pretty much plug and play. Just connect up and you are good to go.
Worst case is you may have to create a new network connection on your computer, and the basic defaults will usually work fine.
If you don't plan to use the wireless feature, you may want to consider turning it off competely.

    Hello SavannahSweetie,
I was looking into the issue you are desribing, and found a great article for troubleshooting wifi connections with iOS devices. It's called iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections and can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398.
Start with this section, and work your way down if needed.
    Basic troubleshooting
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then on again.
Verify that you are in range of your Wi-Fi router or base station.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and Cable/DSL modem are connected to power and turned on.
Check whether other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, refer to this article for information about firmware updates. For third-party Wi-Fi routers, check the manufacturer's website for details on updating your firmware.
Restart your iOS deviceHold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.
    All the best,

  • Usb connection printer, router, two computers on LAN?

I recently got a TP-Link WDR4300 (N750) router with two usb jacks. I have a HP OfficeJet 5610 printer's usb output plugged into the router usb jack. On the network I have an Imac 10.4.11 and a Macbook 10.5.xx. The Imac recognizes the printer and will print. However, the Macbook sees the printer, but will not print. Both computers are plugged into the router by ethernet cables.
There are many posts regarding setting up printers with macs in various configurations. But I have not seen any where there are two computers on the LAN and one computer will print and the other does not.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    You could try [iStat Menus|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25230/istat-menus].
I use this to monitor temps, fan speed, disk usage, read/write speed, CPU usage and of course, network throughput.
    Hope this helps...

  • E 3000 router - Can computers using xp sp1 or sp2 connect wirelessly

I have one older computer that has xp sp1 and 3 others with sp2.  I loaded sp3 in my main computer but do not wish to install SP3 on other computers. My E3000 is an upgrade from a WRT 160n as I was hoping to gain speed and range. Do I have to go back to my old router or is there a way to make my computers work with the E3000 router in wireless mode?

Yes, I have an older dell (dual core) processor, w/ XP pro,  sp2, and connected my e3000 wi-fi, web based.  The one problem that plagues me is no access to Cisco connect, to access connect it appears I must have sp3, which my pooter is unable to do.
For what it's worth I was working at a Microsoft location and asked a techie about my sp3 dilemma, he advised me not to install sp3 because it caused him undue problems to make changes to unspecified programs on his PC, but this was a few years ago maybe things have changed, but I still fail every auto install.
    Good luck.

  • How to connect two computers in one room to a router in a 2nd room?

I have a Linksys modem and WRT54G router in an entry panel in my laundry room.  I have newer house with cat5 cables connected from the router to computers in various rooms.  In the room that we use as an office, we want to connect a 2nd computer to the network, but there is only one ethernet jack on the wall and that jack is used for the first (existing) computer in the room.   I don't want to use a wireless connection for 2nd computer.
How do I connect the 2nd computer to network?  Do I connect both computers to a hub in the office and connect the hub to the ethernet jact on the wall?

You can definitely connect a HUB or a switch to the Wall jack and then connect the computer to the other ethernet port of the device. Make sure that the cable from the router is connected to any one of the ethernet port and not the uplink port.
"Make sure that the cable from the router is connected to any one of the ethernet port and not the uplink port."
So just for my clarification "You can definitely connect a HUB or a switch to the Wall jack"
Witch port should one use? Till now I thought one should connect the wall jack to the uplink port and the 2 computers to the other ports on the switch or hub?

  • A better way? Need to reinstall printer on network after shutting down computers.

    HELP!
I have a HP 3310 All in one.  It is oh, 4 years old or so and this has bugged me the whole time.
Basically, whenever I power down any/all of the computers on my network I lose the printer when I power back up.
My first fix was to just leave everything powered up all the time, worked great until the power went out.  I talked to someone in tech support and they had me uninstall and reinstall everything.  I got it up and running but I definately do not want to do that everytime I want to print something!
My second fix was to hook up directly to computer with USB cable, this was my last solution, I could only print off the computer wired to the printer though.  One of the reasons I bought this printer was I wanted to be able to do so across the network, wirelessly or not.
My network now includes 3 computers and a network backup drive, a laptop (when I use it, is wireless connection) and this printer.  I have a Dlink DGL-4300 router tying everything to my cable modem.
My current bout of frustration stems from recently upgrading 2 computers with some new hardware and new OS, I moved to Win7 on the 2 new rigs, and have Vista on my other desktop, the laptop runs XP but is not used very often.  It does login to my network flawlessly each time I turn it on though.
I am looking for an "easy button" here.  Setting up networks is something I can do, right up until I hit my first problem that a wizard cannot fix.  (which seems to be any problem that pops up)
My printer shows that it is connected to my home network with excellant signal strength ( it is only about 6 feet from the router)  my desktops are all connected and can see each other, I can share files off the vista computer with one of the win7 computers but not the other ( a different problem for another web forum).
My printer does not show up in my network neighborhood window and no number of reboots of printers or computers seems to get things reset so that any of the computers will "see" the printer.  Not sure if this is router related or not.  I simply want the printer to reappear in my network when things are turned back on.  The win7 computers said they had successfully installed the printer after I downloaded the latest software from here for win6 64 bit.  I did not in fact print anything at the time because they said the printer was found and installed correctly, now the printer cannot be located any longer.  HP solution center claims the printer is disconnected, but does nothing to assist in re-establishing a connection.  The wizards cannot locate the printer, manually trying to direct the computers to the printer fail.  I have set up a PW protected wireless network to try to limit prying eyes and leaches from accessing my network and I wonder if somehow this is messing me up.
    I am lost, completely!
    In summery:
    Dlink DGL-4300 router
    Two computers running Win7
    One computer running Vista
    One laptop running XP
    One HP3310 All-in-one printer
When setting up the win7 systems all defaults were selected, I tried to do nothing funny from stock install.  Somehow, I still ended up with one computer not being able to access files on Vista computer.  None of the computers can see the printer though. (this after powering down all computers and turning them back on when needed, router has not been cycled on and off)
Thanks, hopefully someone can explain this to me.  I just do not want to have to reinstall the printer after every time I turn a computer off and back on again.

On many older HP printers the software keeps track of the printer by IP address.  If that IP address changes (due to power outage, the printer re-logging on to the router after being moved, etc), the software can have a difficult time finding the printer.
How comfortable are you in configuring your router?  First, print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer.  We can go from there.

  • Using my LinkSys WRT54G as a router in a home network, but not as the Gateway of the same?

    Greetings,
I am in a situation where I share internet access with roommates. We have a Gateway which is conected to the provider and which delivers ethernet and WiFi signal.
In order to isolate myself from my roomates and to protect my network connection, both wired and WiFi, I would like to plug in the Ethernet cable I get from the Gateway to my router, and then configure my router's firewall and WiFi enctryption to maximize my safety.
However, I am having some problems. I have already configured the router as "router" and not "Gateway" and I am trying to assign it an IP address different from the default one, which is the one the gateway has, and a ranger of DHCP IP's, also different from those of the Gateway. In other words, 192.1681.N.1 for the router and start from there.
Any pointers will be appreciated because so far, my efforts have failed.

There are two (2) ways to cascade a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the Linksys router (router A) to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of another router (router B).
This type of cascading requires the main and the secondary router to be on the same LAN IP segment to allow the computers and other devices to connect to both routers.  This configuration is recommended if you want to share files and resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of router A to the Internet port (WAN port) of router B.
This type of cascading requires the main router and the secondary router to have different IP addresses.  This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers and other devices in the network are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments.  However, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.

I have an HP Photosmart 5512 all-in-one printer and I"m trying to get it to connnect to my computers in my home. I have a HP 2000 laptop running windows 7. I have tried all the trouble shooting software the company provides, I have unplugged and waited on router and printer. I uninstalled and reinstalled software on computer and printer. I have tried everything the company site has to offer to get this printer connected. I have even called the customer support and they won't help me even though I"m using their products, because its been a couple of years. So if there are any techs on here who know anything about this, please help.  I'm about ready to throw it out the window. Its new, I only used it once a couple of years ago and put it back in the box. Now I need it for college and I can't get it to connect. Help Please.

  • Problems with a WRT54G wireless linksys router.

Hello, I'm having problems with my WRT54G linksys wireless router.
With this router, I tend to get lag spikes and often disconnect while playing online games at a certain time. The spikes usually get worse
    during the afternoon/evenings (2pm-12am PST).
    Some information about my setup:
    Firmware version: v.8.00.7
Shaw high speed cable (i think ~10mbit connect)
xp/vista OS (two computers linked up via router)
      - Both computers are connected via wire, not wireless
I've changed settings for my router through advice, but nothing seems to work. Nobody else is connected to my router because I get nothing
in the logs and the DHCP client list has only 2 IPs. I'm sure my router is the one giving me lag spikes because I sometimes connect my
modem directly to my computer (the XP) and receive no lag spikes. Someone does use wireless, but I turn wireless off at times so that
isn't the problem. I've also secured my wireless, so I know it isn't the problem.
Anyone know what's causing these lag spikes and how I can fix it? Do I need a new router?
If anymore information is needed, please do not hesitate to ask.

    Not so computer savvy

Try to readjust the wireless settings of the router...Open the linksys setup page and try the following settings...
    - Reduce the MTU size to 1364.
    - Change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.467GHz.
    - Under Advanced Wireless Settings,Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,RTS Threshold to 2304
Now,check the difference...If you are still facing the same problem then, try to upgrade/reflash the router's firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it from the scratch.

  • LAN sharing problems w/router, AprtExp, and router

We have DSL internet service. I recently replaced my router, and upgraded my computers to 10.5.2 (from 10.4.x).
The router: D-link EBR-2310 (4 port wired router)
    Three computers:
1] PowerBook - AirPort to APExp
2] Mini - AirPort to APExp
the Airport Express is connected in Bridge mode by Ethernet to the router. It also has a USB printer connected
3] MacPro - Ethernet to router
    So:
All three computers can interact normally with the WAN (browsing, iChat, FTP).
At the LAN level, the PowerBook and Mini can both see the MacPro (in the Network browser)(all three computers have File Sharing On) and are able to access the printer.
The problem: The MacPro doesn't see any of the other computers OR the printer.
I am able to log into the MacPro from the PowerBook, but the MacPro can't see the PowerBook (or Mini) going the other way. I am also unable to access the printer from the MacPro.
I hope I explained this clearly enough -- I'm stumped -- any suggestions? Perhaps something on the D-Link router?
    --Hans

The router must have reset. If it's possible while doing this have any laptop wired to the router otherwise you will have to reconnect after changing the ssid and enabling sercurity.
Open your browser and go to http://192.168.1.1 don't mind the username just enter admin for the password. Click on wireless, change the ssid and click save settings. Look for Wireless Security, enable wpa2 enter a your desired network key (8-63 alphanumeric characters). Click save settings and reconnect to your wireless network.
Note: Use WPA2 if your wireless devices support it if not use WPA.

  • WRT350N Wireless router

Users of this router are not crazy.  I have two wireless computers using this router.  One computer is on the n network and a Wusb 300N reciever, connecting at 270 mbps.  The other computer is using a dell card on a g network and is urnning 54 mbps.  That is at first power on of the router and computers.  Then slowly the packet transfer rate slows down and almost stops, the signal strength is 100% on both computers.  Trying to repair the conection most often fails.  An ipconfig /all shows the computers connected to the network and the IP lease is still good for many, many hours.  Followed this command with ipconfig /release and computers release addresses.  Followed this with ipconfig /renew and renewal fails. DCHP will not issue new lease.
I have had three live chat sessions and tried everything and multiple downloads of firmware and a multitude of different settings.  NOTHING works, even factory settings.  But then I bought this for the advanced security settings, gigabit speed, and I have an external hard drive connected for network reterival.
I will try to get one more session so I can get an RMA to return mine.  Maybe that will solve the problem.
My G router works just great with both systems, so looks like the problem is isolated.

I recently purchased a wrt350n router and have problems with the correct settings. Can anyone provide the correct settings (menu by menu) for setting up this router. I have a Windows 2003 server (domain controller), XP desktop, and Vista Ultimate laptop. the server and desktop have 1gb nic cards using my comcast cable modem. connections have to be reset and web pages ( windows update does not appear after the done indictor

  • Router Suggestion

My biggest issue with my current router(s) is port forwarding. In order to use ichat for video conferencing i have to continually foward various ports on my router which usually works, at least temporarily , for one computer..but ifI'm on the other side of the house on my powerbook....it's useless. Additionally, with my current router....port forwarding doesn't always work, and I have to reset it and put in the ports over and over again.
The router I currently use is the Belkin Pre-N router ( great range and speed) and i also have the Linksys 802.11g router, also with similar limiations etc.
Is anyone aware of a router that i chat plays nicely with, without all these forwarding issues?
Just to answer questions in advance.....I've even tried to use the routers with the firewalls off, which doesn't help...and I've tried to set one or more of the computers in the DMZ zone...which is also no help.
Any suggestions would be tremendously appreciated!!!

    Hi John,
Generally speaking only one of the devices Should be doing Port Forwarding and being a DHCP server if you do not have static IP addressing on your local (home) net.
With a device doing DHCP your IP address of your computer can change every time you start up your computer requiring you to redirect the Port Fowarding.
Port Forwarding also limits you to using one computer with those settings and another computer will not be able to iChat (in this case).
Port Triggering or UPnP will allow multiple computers to use the same ports.
    However:
Port Triggering and Port Forwarding involve Network Address Translation (NAT) and two lots of this will cause problems for iChat and throw the ports and addressing off.
Your options are that the modem is in Bridge (Pass Through) mode and then the router can handle any PPPoE login to your ISP. Thsi will get round the problem of two DHCP servers and having to open the ports in two devices.
Alternatively you can set the Router to not do DHCP and this will make it an access point and also potentially reduce the need for setting ports up further.
It would be worth considering giving out Static IP address on your local net and using UPnP if you have it as this is a simplest set up.
This can then allow subnets of modem to router and then router to computers.

  • Unable to create static route

    Hello,
I am trying to setup my Linksys WRT55AG router in Router Operation Mode.
    My configuration is as follows:
    Internet Side:
    WAN-192.168.0.1/24
    gw 192.168.0.2
    Internal Side:
    LAN-10.10.10.1/24
In the Gateway mode, it seems to function as designed while in the Router mode, I am unable to create the following static route:
    172.16.0.0/24 gateway 192.168.0.2 WAN interface.
    The error states the following:
Invalid gateway address: not in 10.10.10.1/255.255.255.0 network
This makes no sense to me unless I am missing something here?

If you change the router into router mode you turn off NAT. This means you'll see the LAN IP addresses 10.10.10.* on the outside of the router. The reason why you cannot ping anything in the 192.168.0.* subnet anymore is simply because the devices connecte in 192.168.0.* don't have routes for 10.10.10.0 or better they forward it to the default gateway. For instance, if you ping 192.168.0.50 from 10.10.10.5 with the router in router mode:
10.10.10.5: 192.168.0.50 is not in the LAN, thus it sends the packet to the default gateway 10.10.10.1
10.10.10.1: the router is connected to 192.168.0.0/24 on the WAN side. It will use ARP to find the MAC address of 192.168.0.50 on the WAN side and will send the packet to 192.168.0.50
192.168.0.50: receives the ping request and send the ping reply to 10.10.10.5.
192.168.0.50: 10.10.10.5 is not in the LAN. There is no static route for 10.10.10.5 available. Therefore the packet is forwarded to the default gateway which is 192.168.0.2 in your LAN.
192.168.0.2: 10.10.10.5 is not known to be connected to either the LAN or WAN side. Therefore the router will forward the packet its own default gateway which will be the gateway router of your ISP.
ISP router: the router will simply drop packets with private source or destination addresses, thus it will drop a packet for 10.10.10.5
The problem is that neither the computers inside 192.168.0.* nor the router 192.168.0.2 knows about the existence of the 10.10.10.0/24 subnet inside your LAN. You have to add static routes on router to get access into the 10.10.10.0/24 subnet.
The reason why it works in gateway mode, i.e. with NAT enabled, is simply because above the router 10.10.10.1 will do something differently:
10.10.10.1: **The router does NAT. It will first replace the source IP address of the packet from 10.10.10.1 with its own "public" IP address which is 192.168.0.1.** The router is connected to 192.168.0.0/24 on the WAN side. It will use ARP to find the MAC address of 192.168.0.50 on the WAN side and will send the packet to 192.168.0.50.
Note, that the ICMP ping received on the target has a source IP address of 192.168.0.1 now instead of 10.10.10.5 as before. The router and computers in side 192.168.0.* all know how to send something to 192.168.0.1.
Regarding the extra route: packets not matched with any other static router will be forwarded to the default gateway. The default gateway is 192.168.0.2 on your Linksys. You don't need the route. The router should not show this strange error message because the route for itself is O.K. but adding the route won't change the routing of the router.

I never advise people to use there computer (Apple or Windows) as a router. Computers do not make good routers but they are good computers. Use your computer as a computer and get a cheap router to do your routing. If you use your computer as a router keep in mind that it must always be on in order for others to connect through it.

  • WRT54G Router vs. Zonealarm

Ok, i thought my router was defective when i got it because for a week straight my internet connection was going down.  It seemed to happen at the same time 5pm EST every day.  I couldnt tell if it was because the router and computers were idle and the connection would drop and be a network card problem, or if it was the router.  After two weeks of frustration and cursing out my WRT54G router something caught the corner of my eye, it was red and in the corner...ZONEALARM!  There was a lot of red, in fact there were thousands of blocked intrusions.  I shut it down, and amazingly the internet came up, and has been up for 2 weeks straight.  I didnt try a lower security level, I just turned it off.  I dont understand why it is doing this.  I have trusted IP's set up, 192.168.1.1 as well as my home network 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.150.  The problem is not in the cable modem, everything checks ok with the router as far as ip address, and connection to the internet, its definately zonealarm.  Has anyone had a problem with this besides me?  If so, what am i doing wrong?  I have never had a problem using zonealarm in the past with a different type of router.  Thanks all!

I have the same issue with ZoneAlarm, and not having the wrt54g admin pages display. But you don't have to uninstall the program. Rather from the zonealarm icon in the system tray. Right click and choose shutdown zonealarm internet security suite.
I called linksys tonight to understand why this happens, and they said for wireless connections moreso than wired connections, the software firewalls (zonealarm, macaffee, norton, etc) can cause troubles. The linksys support lady went as far as to say that you shouldn't have a software firewall running, since the router performs the firewall function. The two will get things messed up.
    good luck

  • Losing Internet, Despite Wi-Fi and Router Connection

A month after moving into a new apartment and setting up our internet, we began to have debilitating internet connection issues. We have a MacBook Pro 10.9.4, an iMac 10.6.8, two iPhone 5's and a PS3 that are wirelessly connect to our router, a Verizon Actiontec Model GT784WNV, on Verizon DSL Internet.
For no apparent reason after a month of use, all of our devices began regularly losing internet connection at once, multiple times a day---sometimes at two minute intervals. According to our computers, our Wi-Fi Network remained "Connected" and displaying a full signal when our browsers were unable to connect at all, and the wireless router showed a steady "Internet" connection light. Despite this, the only way to get the internet back has been by restarting the router.
It seems worth mentioning that during our repeated restarts of the router, both computers would occasionally (maybe every other day) alert us that "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address" as we re-established our Wi-Fi conncection. Since our Wi-Fi is password protected, it only seems logical that it's the MacBook Pro and iMac causing problems for each other. Over the past two years, with similar DSL router setups and restarts, this never was a problem when re-establishing Wi-Fi connections on our computers. After doing some research to see if this might be our main issue, under Network>Advanced>Preferred Networks I removed and re-added the network on both computers, and confirmed they were set to Configure IPv4: "Using DHCP." This had no effect on our internet issue, although we've received less alerts now. For the most part, both computers seem to establish unique IP addresses whenever re-connecting to the Wi-Fi. Is this issue core to our problem, or just a coincidence?
I recently tried connecting our PS3 to the router via Ethernet cable while streaming Netflix to see if it'd stop dropping the Internet connection, but it turned out to be just as unreliable as wireless---to me this suggests that the router/ISP is the issue. We've also tried turning off Wi-Fi on all but one device, but it eventually loses connectivity as well.
I'm wondering if this suggests a issue with our computer settings, or if I need to be in touch with our ISP in regards to a faulty router or intermittent internet? Any insight or suggestions would be a huge help, thanks so much!

You're going to be troubleshooting this and probably eventually discussing this with Verizon.
In the typical small dynamic-IP network setup, the WiFi router gets its address from Verizon via DHCP, and the WiFi router then issues "private" addresses to your clients via its own DHCP server.
Restarting the WiFi router can cause address collisions, as the cheaper WiFi routers don't probe for existing clients and just start handing out addresses and this quite possibly leads to address collisions.   The smarter WiFi routers will probe the network and determine if an IP address is already in use, and will then avoid passing it out again.
if your WiFi router supports it, I'd look to move to 5 GHz — from what I can tell from what few specs available, it doesn't appear to support 5 GHz — as the 2.4 GHz band tends to be heavily used in apartment buildings and built-up areas, and with excessive interference resulting.  (Though your attempts to use a hard-wired connection imply a problem with the WiFi router or with the DSL.)
