1 screen + 1 iBook= 1 BIG screen

i have an old monitor that i sometimes use for my ibook (works perfectly) but i want to know how to do that thing where you have two screens and the two screens work together to become one gigantic screen. Does anyone know how to do this, and if they do what is this "method" called?

yea - i get your point - i think that most software comes down to using it at your own risk to some extent - i've had no probles with it - to be honest i don't see how using it could void warranty either - since it's only software and you don't have to open up the iBook or anything. *unless you totally screw up your iBook which i don't see how that could happen* i'm just totally adventurous when it comes to trying software but do take some precautions of course i think that it depends on the iBook perhaps it is installing on and how well the graphics card will handle it. I have one of the newer ones, and it handles it excellently. *if i would of had more money i'd a gone with a power book instead

  • IBook G4 (big) problem

I have just installed a new hard-drive into a 12" iBook G4. When I re-started the machine, and attempted to boot the install disk for OS10.3, the disk drive whirred for a few seconds, then...nothing - I got the blinking ?/finder face in the center of the screen. Furthermore, I get the same thing when I try to boot up the hardware diagnostics disk...yikes. Everything was working fine beforehand, and I should mention that I have installed a hard drive in another ibook before, with no problems at all.
Any thoughts? Its a friends laptop, I need to solve this, or be hated!

Only the first generation iBooks (800MHz 12") came with 10.3.0. If that has a faster processor it came with a newer release of 10.3 and the disc you have won't work. See the following article for more info.

  • IBook Notes - big time issues

iBook is a great app, but if this is the future of education, then we have an issue. The ability to highlight is a great study tool. But why does performance degrade with the more highlighting that is done? If you are a prolific highlighter, this is a major issue. Secondly, why can you not sort the notes by page number? Why is date the only sort method? If we are to be using this to replace paper books, these issues must be addressed very quickly.

  • IBooks update - big fail again for PDF

So Apple released a new version of iBooks yesterday and everytime when there is an update I hope there is support for text-selection/mark for PDF-files. There are alot of apps that supports this function, so this can't be very hard to implement right?
On college I have alot pdf-sheets that I can't convert to .epub. So I need text-selection! It's ridiculous Apple can't seem to implement this!

    Hi,

  • What to do with this MBP?

I "upgraded" to a 1.8 MacBook Pro from a 700 mhz 12" ibook. Big mistake.* It just doesn't "fit" me. While super powerful it doesn't suit what I use it for; surfing the web and checking email around the house. It's just too big, too heavy and too fragile for a bang around notebook. Plus I really don't care for the heat, the cursor problem and the whine. I have a dual 2.0 powermac in the house for heavy lifting.
Anyway, the point of this post is what can I do with it? I got it for $1850 after rebate from Amazon. I could ebay it for a loss. Maybe I could convince Amazon to take it back without a 15% restocking fee because of all the problems. Any other ideas? I am going to get the ibook at about half the cost.
*I am not bashing all those who got the MBP. If I needed a powerhouse computer for work, this would be it. But as a laptop to use in bed, in your easy chair, for surfing, it isn't it.

Yes, I called Amazon and they were super nice saying I could return it without the fee. Just to note the problems with the whine, heat issue and disappearing curser.
I don't know. While I like the speed, I really don't think this thing is best for use as a true laptop. I always have my ibook in my lap, around the house. It's never at a desk. The ergonomics, heat and its fragile nature are terrible for laptop use. My wrists actually hurt after a while from rubbing against the edges. For me, a 12" ibook is the only way. If I needed all that power I'd keep it. For Safari, Mail and an occasional game, a G4 will suffice.

  • Desperately Seeking Genius: iBook G4 won't go past gray screen w/ apple...

Hi AppleHeads. I am looking for some assistance from a nice mac genius. I am trying to fix my sister's computer and am not sure exactly what to do here. Her laptop is an iBook g4 with 1.33GHz Power PC, G4 processor, 512 MB and 40 GB hard drive. She had noticed her computer getting really slow and crashing frequently. She ran some updates this morning and then the computer crashed. Now, it will not turn on past a gray screen with the apple logo. I attempted to trouble-shoot the issue using the guide the computer came with and also ran the Apple Hardware Test. Everything passed -- see the results below. What is my next option? I would like to try and save all of the data as she has not backed up recently (tsk tsk). I'm sure a lot of people post this kind of request, so if there is a solution out there that you know of, please share the information or links. I know that one option is to wipe out the computer and reinstall Mac OS X but I'd like to only do that as a last resort until I can pull the files. Thanks!

Hi Doley and welcome to Apple Discussions,
is an iBook g4 with 1.33GHz Power PC, G4 processor, 512 MB and 40 GB hard drive. She had noticed her computer getting really slow and crashing frequently.
Was she aware of how full the hard drive was? That can often lead to problems.
    Uh oh just noticed this:
    Mac OS X (10.0.x)
    Is that right?
    the 14.1" 1.33 ran Mac OS X 10.3
    the 12.1" 1.33 Mac OS X 10.4
    Saving Data:
Does she have the original install disks?
See if it can boot from them or an appropriate installer for the size.
If so then save to an external drive or another Mac in target mode.
If her iBook will go into target mode it would then act like a big expensive external hard drive:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
    After saving data:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
or use disk utility. Depends on what OSshe was running.
She ran some updates this morning and then the computer crashed.
If it happened while the computer was updating after downloading them that would really mess up the OS.
If that's the case it might take a program like Data Rescue II to retrieve data off that hard drive.

  • Screen black, won't sleep, but iBook seems to be on

I haven't quite been able to find an answer to my problem on the discussion groups yet.
Two nights ago, my girlfriend was using our 900mhz G3 iBook (dual USB) running 10.3.9. She was surfing the internet and closed the screen to put it to sleep. When she went to wake it up, the screen was black and not resonding. When I got home, I could hear the fan working and the caps lock light went on when I pressed it in. If you held down the power button it seemed to power down when you turned it off and would make the power up/on sound when you turned it on. However, if you closed the lid, the sleep light would not come on.
Yesterday, I did some reading and decided to do a PMU reset when I got home. I forgot to look up how to reset the PRAM and didn't do it. Before doing the PMU reset, I took out the battery and disconnected the iBook from the power for at least a minute. Then, I reset the PMU and the computer magically came back to life without any problems.
I immediately restarted with the hardware test CD and it came up again no problem. I started the hardward tests and it made it through to memory. The Logic Board and other hardware tested fine. But when it was in the middle of testing the RAM, a weird blobby rainbowey green/purple/white/black sort of blob started moving up and down the sceen and then eventually froze as one big color changing blob.
I did a forced restart and the screen never really came back. The computer still seems to be on (the volume button works and it sounds like it's on). However, the screen is totally black. And resetting the PMU again has not worked at all.
    Any thoughts?

This seems similar to the problem that I had just a few days ago. I was typing as paper and the screen just flipped out and the computer froze. I had to do a hard shutdown and then zapped the pram and the PMU. The computer was clearly "on" but the screen was black. I took it to the apple sote and they sent it out for repair. It was the logic board that failed on mine(the logic board is a known issue and has an extended coverage on it. check this link (http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/)) That being said it is odd that when you were able to run the hardware test, the logic board was ok. My mother in law had a very similar problem to mine except when she plugged in an external monitor she could see the desktop etc. When she took hers in for her issue it was something different and not covered by the apple extended protection. Do you have an external monitor to test with?
With all of that being said your absolute best bet is to take it to apple. They will most likely have to send it to a tech center. I told them that if it was anything other than the logic board I wanted to be notified to authorize the repairs so I didn't come back with a huge bill.

  • Ibook Screen Death with a twist?

My Ibook screen is doing the typical fickering and eventually goes out after 1 minute, but when I had it hooked up to my big Mac via firewire it seems as if the whole system dosen't respond (it will mount when I can see the screen but when the screen goes out so does everything else) . I know that the screen is one thing but why would it affect the computer thru firewire (can't drag out data/ can't unmount disk etc)? What are the parts do I need and do I have to have good soldering skills (mine suck)? P.S. I can drag a couple of things out to my G4 before the screen and system becomes unresponsive.

It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
If you are past the three-year time limit, ask to speak to Customer Relations and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
You may be able to get the iBook to remain responsive in FireWire Target Disk Mode so you can retrieve your data by this method:
If the iBook is on, shut it down and wait 30 seconds (or longer). Pick it up in your left palm to the left of the trackpad and squeeze the case there between your palm and left thumb as you push the power button and key combination to start up in FireWire Target Disk Mode. Do not let up the pressure on the case. Continue applying this pressure as you save your data to the other Mac. If you let up and the iBook dies or freezes, you will have to start over, allowing it to rest several hours or overnight before beginning again.
Let us know how things go.

  • Extrenal display ON and ibook screen OFF impossible ???

    Hello,

  • IBook runs OS9 with tiny screen!?

I just installed MacOS9 overtop of Tiger 10.4 and then I thought I would boot into OS9 to make sure that works. It unfortunately went to this ~9" screen section and wouldn't use more than that.
It actually boots with the whole screen but as soon as Mac OS9 starts up it jumps to this partial screen. I was poking around in the Monitor screen and clicked on the "turn pointer off on this screen" - don't EVER do that! it took forever to find a way back to 10.4.
Classic mode seems to run... but this machine was said to be the last of the iBooks capable of booting into OS9. There is some sort of video RAM error - would that cause this? OSX doesn't have much problem other than some residual specks as the mouse is moved around.

Download this in 10.x and run it : http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html . Then go into OS 9 and open up monitors and click on arrange and uncheck mirror displays. You should have a big display but your cursor may slip off, just go in the other direction to get it on the screen. It thinks there is a external monitor connected. You don't have brightness controls before and after, it will also not go to sleep before and after, this just makes the screen bigger.

  • Screen Flicker iBook Graphite SE

Yesterday my screen started to flicker and I can't figure out what caused it or how to/if I can fix it.
There were no impacts or movement of any sort, the computer has been sitting on my desktop for the last few days in moderate use.
If anyone has any tips for me to try before ripping it apart, please let me know.
    Thanks

It may be just your screen about to die. It does not
take impacts or movement to cause the screen to die,
just age as i have witnessed this on many Windows
Laptops. This seems to occur around the five year
mark and up. Check the display cables though. Does
the screen flciked when your ibook boots up or just
in the OS. If only in the OS and that's the problem.
If this occurs throughout the entire boot process
then your screen is the culprit.
Actually, I figured out what the problem is. The backlight for the screen has gone bad. The screen itself is still displaying information but since there is no light to make it readily visible it is basically unusable until fixed. However, I've found the schematics for a DIY replacement that would cost around $20, or the computer repair at my university quoted me $130 to replace. Not a big deal at all.

  • My screen has streched out real big and the touch screen is difficult to use and can't return the screen to normal size.Has anyone ever experienced this?

My screen has streched out real big and the touch screen is difficult to use and can't return the screen to normal size.Has anyone ever experienced this?

Double-tap the screen with three fingers, then go to Settings and disable the Zoom function so you don't accidentally trigger it again.
The User Guide is available at http://support.apple.com/manuals/ or downloadable from iTunes as an iBook.

  • IBook G4 - Boots, then black screen - not a backlight issue

My iBook g4 12" 1.33 Ghz doesn't want to boot into the system.
    1. Start computer (chime sound)
    2. Apple logo on grey background appears
    3. Spinning wheel below Logo appears
    4. Screen flicker, big vertical zigzag appears, black screen (backlight is on)
    5. Shift key work (led on/off)
    6. Num Lock key works (led on/off)
    7. no responses with any other keys on keyboard
    What I tried so far
    1. Reset PRAM & NVRAM & PMU
    2. Put original installer disc in, press C start from DVD - same as above happens
    3. Boot from external hard drive with operating system over Firewire - same as above happens
    4. Mounted iBook drive as external drive with target mode - Other computer boots fine with iBook drive
    5. Attached an external monitor, which doesn't get a signal
    6. Run Hardware test over DVD - Diagnostics all fine (Screen fine all the time, running through all diagnostics)
    7. Tried pressing on the graphic chip, as some forum entries suggest - didn't change anything
    8. Start in Safe mode with shift key - no indication that in safe mode, same faults
    9. Start in single-mode (see image http://www.somethingonline.org/dl/pb/singlemode.jpg)
Don't know what else to try
    Any help appreciated

    Markus:
Run Hardware test over DVD - Diagnostics all fine (Screen fine all the time, running through all diagnostics)
Your issues seems rather strange. From the statement quoted above, am I to understand that when you boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk you are able to see the tests running on the monitor, but when you attempt booting from the install disk you cannot see anything on the monitor? If that is so, it seems rather odd that you can boot from one and not from the other.
Mounted iBook drive as external drive with target mode - Other computer boots fine with iBook drive.
When you booted in FW-TDM which computer was Target and which was host? Sounds like you were able to use the iBook as the host computer with the other as Target. Try it the other way around with the iBook in Target Mode and the other computer as Host. Then launch Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the iBook, selecting the iBook's HDD (manufacturer's ID) in the sidebar. Post back with results. If you are able to do so download and run SMART Utility - 2.0.2 for a reading on the HDD. I am not sure if it will work with the iBook as a FW drive, but it gives more information about the HDD than Disk Utility, which only gives a Verified or Failed status.
    Good luck.
