1-second glitches in compressor output

Hello,
I have been scanning this forum, which is chock-full of compressor gripes. I can't tell for sure, but don't see my particular problem here.
I have footage (all 60i) which, when encoded (1pass VBR) generally looks ok - but there are sections, including sections in which the scene is very still - NOT panning - in which a jump, about-once-per-second glitch appears. This happens over and over, in one case for 10s or so, and then goes away again. So it * isn't always there * isn't necessarily associated with panning or significant movement in the frame.
I would feel better if it was always there, or only during significant movement in the frame.
Do I need a constant bit rate? I have read to avoid 2-pass VBR. Any suggestions? This did not happen (a common statement..) in older versions of compressor, and I didn't notice it until upgrading to FCStudio and a powermac dual core 2.3, so it is relatively recent - not just the change to compressor v2. I keep wondering if a new option has been added, and I don't know to shut it off.
In the hope that someone else finds this a trivial and previously solved problem - I'm posting and hoping.
Thanks for your time.
Brian

Try exporting the movie as uncompressed 8 bit or 10 bit and then encode that (this is HDV 1080/60i?) Take a look here wheere Mikey M. has some real good details as to Compressor settings

  • ITunes 8 & 9 - Half-second glitch when playing music

Recently, I have noticed a half-second glitch when I have iTunes on shuffle. The first song I play plays perfectly fine, but every song after the first has a half-second glitch about 1 second into playing the song. I don't remember exactly when I started because I often just play music as background noise at home. I did upgrade to 10.6 on my MacBook Pro last month when it came out. I have NEVER had any problems like this before on my Mac. I thought upgrading to iTunes 9 would help with the issue, but it hasn't. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what to do to resolve this issue? I'm somewhat new to a Mac and haven't learned the in's and out's yet. Thanks!

I have a similar issue. Everything was fine with iTunes 8 but when I got 9 my songs just wont play. They play like one note then just stop for 5 minutes. Then they might play for a few more seconds then they just stop.
I don't think its a problem with my internet because all my music is like this, not just the internet stream music.
    Any help would be great.

  • HT4722 Hi do I buy a second licence of Compressor on the app store so I can share processing. Want to use the same itunes account.

Hi do I buy a second licence of Compressor on the app store so I can share processing. Want to use the same itunes account.

If you're referring to distributed processing on multiple computers and if they're yours, you don't need another license. Just sign in with your account info and download C4 to the other computer.
If that is not what ypu're referring to, please give a more complete description and perhaps someone can steer you in the right direction.
    Good luck.

  • HT1583 When burning a DVD of photos and music from iDVD, the photos blur right before the transitions and the music has about 5 second glitches here and there before the music starts again. Is there any way to burn the DVD without this happening?

Each year I am in charge of making a slideshow of photos and music for my annual company meeting. I always use iDVD to set up my photos and music and then burn the DVD to play at the meeting. Every time I burn the DVD, it blurs right before the transition of the photo. It has always done this and I'm not sure why. It will also make the music glitch in a few spots for about 5 seconds or more. If I burn another DVD to try it again, the glitches will still be there, but in different spots. I've tried the highest quality of DVD's possible and this still happens. What can I do to fix this problem?

    Try disabling transitions altogether!
There is a technical reason that this breakup happens - it is to do with how slideshows can be saved within the DVD specification, they can either be recorded as 'video streams' or as a collection of 'still images'.
When you add transitions iDVD has no option but to use a video stream, this can result in terrible 'breakup' because the mpeg 2 encoder isn't designed to handle scenes that are static with a sudden short change. You can see 'artefacts' in the video stream…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compression_artifact
'Still image slideshows' avoid the issue altogether by only showing a static image, no video compression is used & because the scene doesn't transition so it shouldn't breakup.
NOTE: Music on the slideshow is irrelevant, both types can use a soundtrack.
I cannot remember if it is possible to force iDVD to only make still image slideshows, I always use DVD Studio Pro to correctly setup DVD's. I'd suggest you use the option to save the DVD to a disk image & then open that disk image so that DVD Player can preview it, that should save on the number of test disks you burn.
If you cannot make it avoid using video streams you may be ether off making your own video slideshow in iMovie & then import that into iDVD. It may eventually look better despite being a video stream!
iDVD isn't really condusive to professional levels of control.

  • Second display resolution not outputting properly

I have two iMacs (details below) in my office with matching second monitors: LG Flatron W2252S
-- a mid 2007 20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Apple Mini DVI-VGA Adapter
-- a late 2009 21.5" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo (Penryn) with Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
On the older iMac I can run the LG monitor at a maximum resolution of *1680x1050 (60 Hz)*
However, the newer iMac will only output at *1400x1050 (60 Hz*).
It seems to have the option of 1600x1200 in System Preferences>Displays but if I select this output I get the message "Out of Range 74.7 kHz / 60 Hz"
Is there any reason why the 2 monitors are acting differently? I've swapped them around a few times and the problem seems to lie with the iMac rather than the screens or cables
    Help! Please!

    Hi Robbo, did this work?
I have a very similar issue in that my Viewsonic sometimes is a VGA monitor in the prefferences and other times its VA2213. I'm not sure what the issue is but I can only use a VGA adaptor as there is no DVI port on the Viewsonic monitor. Sometimes my resolution is 1920x1080, other times its 1400x1050. I have a thread going, one person told me to switch on my second monitor first but that's not helping either.

  • Pops and random glitches from audio output

    Hi,
I've been experiencing some issues from the audio output. There is a pop sound before and after a single sound is played and stopped. When this happens, the console shows the stack shots enabled/disabled pair of messages. I've seen threads about this messages and the popping sounds, but no solutions really.
I also get a totally random sound from the speakers (tested different systems) at any given moment. Sometimes browsing the internet, playing a quicktime movie or just doing nothing. I've noticed that it gets really bad when I play chess at chess.com, which uses an interface (not sure what).
So, this is the thing, I'm a musician and I use my mac for music purposes, so you can imagine how annoying it can be to have pops and glitches on a supposedly state-of-the-art machine

"Is this a hardware error or am I stuck with this situation? "
Take your MBP to an Apple Store so that the Geniuses can run diagnostic tests. They will let you know if it's a hardware problem or if you are stuck w/it.

  • Compressor outputs pixelated H.264 video when using a virtual cluster

    Hey all,
So for some reason, when I use compressor to convert my HDV .mov file to H.264, if I am using a virtual cluster (8 core Mac Pro5,1)the end product comes out pixelated. However, I just tried again without the virtual cluster, and it came out normal as usual. Anyone know what I am missing? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Whoops, I'm clearly not paying attention. The images are a little small so it's hard to see, but the first image is without the quick cluster, and the second is with the quick cluster

  • Compressor Output Quality

Is there some way to control the output quality in Compressor besides picking the encoding method? I am exporting as an Mpeg2 60min fast encode standard quality and the file is 1gb to large for a single layer disk? I would like to reduce the video quality slightly so the file will fit on a single layer disk.

Assets in the bin don't get attributed to the DVD unless they are in a track or a menu. You can tell if they are being used when you try to delete them and Compressor tells you that you can't because they are being used.
In your original post you said you had a 1hr and 12 min video, yet you used the 60 min. preset. The 60 min preset will make a 60 min video fit on a single DVD, but not a 72 min video. For a 72 min video you would need a 72 min preset... use the 90 min preset. No need for the 120, unless you have a ton of video menus.
As far as the timeline issue goes, press shift-z with the timeline active. Does the end of your sequence go to the end of the timeline interface? Or do you have lingering elements out in the extremes that you forgot about? If the former, then don't set any in or out points, just send the sequence to Compressor, or export a Quicktime movie and drag that into Compressor, apply 90 in setting, and go.

  • Compressor output to FLV using Flash Pro Codec?

I was told by an Apple Tech support person, after venting my frustrations over Apple's website promoting Compressor being able to output to FLV, that Compressor CAN output to FLV using the FLV codec that is available if you have Flash Pro Installed. (Part of CS3 Web Bundle)
I need to build things in Motion and output to Flash for website use, without having to spend almost $1000 for a motion plug-in. I think this is the only time that Apple has really advertised something that's not available without a lot more third party expense.
So... can someone explain how to use the Flash Pro Codec in Compressor to output to FLV?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Will H.

I have Final Cut Studio 2 as well as the Adobe Flash encoder and can't transfer a Quicktime to a FLV that plays back on ether of my systems. I shouldn't have to buy another application to do this.
Hope you or someone can help.
Standard misperception of FLV. FLV is not a self-contained movie, it requires a Flash Player running inside a Web page or the Flash application. You cannot even open the Flash Player and play an FLV unless the Flash Player…nevermind. It's weird, but that's Adobe for you.
You can play it back easily inside Adobe's free Media Player (it's beta but harmless). Free download for both Winderz and MAcintosh.

  • Compressor outputs white screen for video?

    Hi Folks,
Just bought FCP Studio 3 a few days ago.
I'm on a new mac pro quad 2.66 running latest rev of SL.
    Here's the deal:
I took a 1 hour 33 minute edited DV movie from within FCP 7.
    output a reference QT file.
went into QT and saved the text files (if i don't, i won't save the chapters).
following this great video for setting up a cluster between my 2 mac pros
    http://vimeo.com/1799266
chose the Best 90 minute DVD setting for ac3 and mpeg2 at 6.2
    ran it.
video is completely white. sound is there, but i don't get it?
when I go into compressor and click on my video file, I can see the footage in the screen on the right hand side. I thought maybe the reference file didn't include the video (ie. maybe I selected it wrong), but it's there.
    Any ideas?
I ran a search on 'white screen' and 'white video', but nothing came up?
    Cheers,
    keebler

    Hi folks,
just wanted to let you know that I believe the problem stemmed from me not choosing the DV NTSC 48 khz setting instead of 'current settings'. Once I chose DV etc... it was good to go.

  • Compressor - Output Clips Missing Frames Throughout

Compressing clips from Canon 7D (H.264) to Avid1:1x codec creates clips that are missing some frames. This results in a shorter output clip.
    The missing frames are random.
The clips have a steppy playback that can be seen when stepping through the clip one frame at a time.
I am not re-timing the clips. The source is 25fps, and so is the output.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

    G'day
Benjamin, Benjamin, Benjamin, a world of hurt today, mate.
I'm not sure this is the best workflow for you. Have you tried anything like clipwrap or Mpegstream clip to get the clips into a usable Avid format? I'm wondering if you have the correct codecs installed in the first place.
what you can do is work in smaller batches and keep sending them off in the queue.
If you have an 8 core machine you'll want to setup an render cluster, using 4 instances. Look through the manual for that in Qmaster. then when you submit, send the render batch to the cluster rather than "this machine."
I haven't been on an Avid in an age and a half, but I'd think they'd have a workflow setup for these clips, I mean rather then running off to Apple's solution.

  • Compressor outputs stuttery QT's from image sequence

    Hey all,
I'm having an issue when trying to batch image sequences from compressor. The resulting QT is 'stuttery' and 'jumpy'. The source image sequences are .tga's and the destination formats are ProRes 422 HQ @23.976/ 23.98
The attributes pane recognizes the seq as progressive and 23.98 before putting my settings on and I've not enabled frame controls.
I did have this working at one point during testing, and I remember having to do something mundane to each image sequence so that it came out alright - I thought it was choosing the 23.98 fps setting in the attributes inspector, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything.
This is on a mac pro1.1, quad 3ghz and 12 gb ram.
Any questions or help would be grteatly appreciated-
    Thanks all!

It's perfect when I put it through FCP: as was the previous workflow. It'd just be a heck of a lot easier to batch all the shots I deal with ^^
I think that re-selecting the 23.98 in the atributes window for each image sequence seems to get it. Any other ideas?- it'd be great if I didn't have to. boy- I sound lazy
    Thanks a bunch!

  • Compressor output ac3 file too small?

I'm making an ac3 for a short 14 minute film from a large 800 meg 5.1 surround , however when compressor finishes the file is only 50 MB,
Is that ok? Just How do 800 MB become 50MB?
I check the audio and seems fine, but is this right?

Yeah but the 800 MB file is just audio .wav file!!! No video there to take so much space!!
Everything seems fine both channel mappings and length, its just too spooky to see such a huge file turn into a 50 MB clip.

  • Green blocky errors in Compressor output - possible solution?

I've read the posts on this issue - I've had issues with the blocky artifacts since Compressor 1.2.1, so I switched over to BitVice long ago. But with Compressor 2.01 I've decided to look into this again, since so many people have no problems at all, and I found a post by Robert Baruch which blames the problem on dicey memory. In his case, no errors showed up with memtest, and no application seemed to be affected, but when he tried stripping his machine down to the original 512K and ran his file again, the green bars went away. So he ordered all new memory from Crucial, and now Compressor runs like a champ.

If nothing else, this might explain why people find something that won't compress on one machine works perfectly on another.
This ring any bells? Sound plausible? I'm looking for a little confirmation before I cough up for a fresh mess o' RAM.

Compressor changed the fonts because Compressor couldn't see or use the fonts that Motion could. This is only an issue when you Export via Compressor from the Motion interface. I'm not familiar with Green Fuz and Venus Rising as fonts, but there's no need to Export via Compressor directly from Motion. Nor do you have to compress to a low res out of Motion and then Compress again.
Intead, export high-res out of Motion, and then do all the web-compressing in Compressor so the video only takes one quality hit instead of two.
Compressor won't change the fonts, because an exported movie is just that, a movie and the fonts are burned into the footage. Nothing for Compressor to change.
