1 Thunderbolt display suddenly has green everywhere.

I have two thunderbolt monitors which I have been using on my macbook pro with no problem.  I just purchased a mac mini and everything has been fine for a few days.
Whilst working tonight one screen suddenly has a green background to everything.  Navigation bars are green, the inside of windows are green - say if working in word the document itself is green, the icons on the desktop have a green background.
If I take a screen shot the screen shot does not include the green.  If I drag a window from the green screen to my second display it is fine.
I swapped the monitors around and the same screen stays green.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you go to preferences, displays and try the calibration app.?  Do you have any magnetic items close to the screen?

  • Thunderbolt display suddenly not working

I have a brand new MBP (retina), purchased about 2 months ago.  I also purhased a 27in thunderbolt display about 1 week ago.  The display has been working fine until tonight.  When i tried to wakup my laptop from sleep the thundebolt display didn't do anything.  I re-plugged all the cables and still got nothing.  Rebooted MBP, nothing... shutdown MBP, still nothing.
Removed all USB cables from display, pulled power cord from display, re-connected, still nothing.
Went through the guides on here about reseting PRAM, NVRAM and SMC.  Done all that, and nothing.
Also did the delete the /com.apple.windowserver.plist file... nothing seems to work.  I can still charge the laptop from the display, but plugging in the thunderbolt cable does nothing at all.
Pretty ****** off, this display is one week old and it suddenly dies?
I have another display (dell) which works fine from either thunderbolt port from the mac.
Any thoughts?  Is it the MBP or the display?
Software on MBP is Maviricks 10.9.2

So i left the MBP shutdown and the display unplugged from power overnight.
Connected it up this morning and nothing happened... left it connected and after about 10 minutes the display magically came to life out of no where...
    Seems a bit dodgy!

  • Thunderbolt Display suddenly no longer recognized by my MBA

I have been using the thunderbolt display with my Mid 2011 Macbook Air (13inch).  Everything worked fine. Now suddenly when I plug in the monitor the macbook does not recognize it.  In System Information:Thunderbolt it says it is not connected to anything:
    MacBook Air:
      Vendor Name:          Apple, Inc.
      Device Name:          MacBook Air
      UID:          0x0001000C12AC2000
      Firmware Version:          8.1
      Port:
      Status:          No devices connected
      Link Status:          7
I know there is power to the display, as I have been using the display's cable to charge the MBA (as I've always done).
I don't know how to diagnose the issue further.  Nothing else is connected to monitor or computer.  Restarted many times.  All cables look fine.  All software up to date. (not sure about any display firmware...).  Clamshell or as additional display.

Try the other DVI port on the graphics card.  On early Mac Pros, only one port is the dual-link DVI needed for full resolution on the 30" display.  Make sure the display's USB cable is plugged into the computer.

  • My Mac book Pro when plug in to the thunderbolt display my photoshop cs6cc shows a green screen through my photoshop screen ?

When I use photoshop cs6cc on my MacBook Pro I use the Thunderbolt display and the green water back ground shows through my photoshop display when using it. It does not do it when using Lightroom  Help?

Try entering your login code 4 digits to unlock the phone. Then connect it.

  • How to connect two DVI screens to Thunderbolt Display's Thunderbolt Port?

    Hi everyone,
I have a new MBP and an external Thunderbolt Display. The Thunderbolt Display itself has a Thunderbolt port, and I was wondering if there is anyway to connect to DVI screens to that. My goal is to have the Thunderbolt Display and 2 x 24" Samsung DVI screens connected to my MBP.
Alternatively, has anyone had success using a third party device like the Matrox 2 go to drive multiple monitors from the usb port?
    Thanks,
    Dave.

You could try a TB>DVI adapter (here's one from Monoprice) but I don't know that it will work - I'm thinking that you could have at least one of your Samsung displays use it. You may also want to see if you can find a HDMI>DVI adapter for your second Samsung display - something like this?
I know that I've seen three monitor set-ups on YouTube - but I'm not sure what was connected to what. Easy enough to daisy-chain ATDs but it gets a bit tougher when utilizing HDMI ports, etc., and I'm not sure about the GPUs ability to drive all three displays.
Oops - sorry - strike that second paragraph - I thought that you were running a Retina display MBP...

  • Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display crashes

I have a Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display which has recently started to crash.
Only modifications I have doen lately is I swapped the CD/DVD drive for a harddrive and put in 16 GB of ram
but it has been running for more than a month with these hardware additions without problems.
Today my Macbook has started to crash frequently within 10 min to 1 hour after plugging in my thunderbolt display.
I tried to check CPU heat, change RAM but it keps crashing.
When it crashes it either gives me a blue screen, a black screen or a distorts everythings and freeze up.
When rebooting I have to press Command-Option-P-R to clear NVRAM / PRAM.
I found a few support threads from people having similar problems so I started to disconnect the thunderbolt display
and without plugging it in my laptop works fine.
I have done a SMC reset also but that has not resolved my issue.
Below is the crash report and if anybody has any suggestions what to do to resolve this please let me know
My thunderbolt display was purchased in late 2011
If this is not solveable what options do I have ?
    Thanks !

The other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before.  Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas??  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop.

  • Can I daisy chain two Thunderbolt displays to the new MacBook Airs (July 2011)?

I have last year's MacBook Air -- probably the best Mac I've ever had and I've had a few. I looked at using multiple displays last year, but the reviews for the major 3rd-party solutions really demonstrate how little is possible.
I see Apple says you can double up on displays for the MacBook Pro (I have a pre-Thunderbolt one unfortunately), what about the new (July 2011) MacBook Airs?
    Anyone tried? Anyone know?
(I have a 30" Dell display, but it is, and always has been, very flakey when it comes to connecting to a Mac laptop).

You can thank Intel for that.
The sandy bridge chips all have integrated graphics, and before they were released -- they took nvidia to court claiming they didn't have a "license" to make GPU chipsets for the sandy bridge line.  Intel won, and consumers lost.
The solution most manufacturers are using for notebooks is graphics switching (nvidia optimus like technology) -- which basically uses a discreet GPU along side the intel integrated GPU, and switches between the two instantaenously based on the workload and \ or battery life -- this is how the macbook pro's with the ATI gpus work.
Since there isn't enough space physically inside a macbook air for a discreet GPU, and since no company in the world is allowed to make a shared GPU for intel's sandy bridge chipsets -- the only solution is to use the integrated graphics that is in the processors -- Intel HD 3000.  Intel basically has the monopoly here...there is no legal solution in the world another company can provide thanks to our wonderful court system
Wanna know the really sad part about the Intel HD 3000 GPU?  The Nvidia 320M (the GPU used in the previous model 2010 macbook air -- chip was released to the market in April of last year) actually out performs it in some benchmarks -- that's right, a 1+ year old shared gpu from nvidia outperforms Intel's 2011 integrated graphics.
    Intel ***** at graphics, period.
The only other solution I can think of is for you to get the "Echo Express" product from Sonnet:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/thunderbolt/index.html
It's basically an external bay that will allow you to put a PCIe GPU inside it, and it would then connect via thunderbolt to the macbook air.
You would then use the minidisplayport connectors on the PCIe GPU to connect to the apple displays -- I believe any modern ATI or Nvidia GPU can support up to 3 or 4 external displays.
Unfortunately, sonnet's bay is not released yet, and you'd also have to make sure the PCIe GPU you get supports both thunderbolt AND os x....so yeah, kind of slim pickens right now
    EDIT:
So apparently the macbook pros can daisy chain two thunderbolt displays -- Apple has a picture of it on their site:
    http://storeimages.apple.com/1867/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/MC914_AV 7?wid=1200&hei=1200&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0, 0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp
I just bought a new mac air too...I was gonna get a mbpro but they are just too expensive -- the one I configured was at around 3000$
Wanna know what's lame about using the thunderbolt display with the mac air?  So the new mac air has the magsafe connector on one side and the thunderbolt connector on the other -- they're not on the same side like the macbook pro is (see picture) -- so basically the cable is going to have to slack around the back of the macbook air -- who designed that?  Must have been smoking some good meth ;p

  • Xbox 360 (or other HDMI cable) to Thunderbolt Display

    Hi all,
Is there a way to get HDMI in on the Thunderbolt Display? I'm looking for a minimal cost solution to play my Xbox on my display and have only found the Kanex HD, which I'm not even sure works with the Thunderbolt Display. Has anyone found another solution?

Is there a way to get HDMI in on the Thunderbolt Display?
    No.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

My macbook air (version 10.9.4) display flickers, has random tabs and windows opening, and there are random ads almost everywhere. All this happens when I am using safari. What can I do?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Thunderbolt display is detected, charges, has audio BUT a black screen

    Hi guys.
I'm having a major issue with my Thunderbolt display - I can't see anything on it.
I have a 13" Late 2011 MacBook Pro and I bought my Thunderbolt display about a month after (around December 2011).
When I connect my MBP to the Thunderbolt connection it detecs the screen and flashes blue as usual, but then the Thunderbolt display remains black and my MBP loses it's toolbar and dock (as they are setup to use the default screen - which is the Thunderbolt).
My MBP charges off the screen, it can play music through the screen and my computer acts as if it is there... however the issue being the whole screen is black (as if it not connected).
My boyfriend has the exact same setup and I have tried my MBP with his screen with no issues. However we have tried his MBP with my Thunderbolt and it will not display either.
This issue had been intermittent for a while, but when I was using it today it suddenly went black and I've had no luck since making it work.
    Is my Thunderbolt dead?
(by the way, I have reset the PRAM with no luck)

Well I think I have found my problem. I took mine in to get repaired and they told me it had a faulty logic board which had been 'replaced and fixed', only when I got round to testing it, the same thing happened. I took it back and turns out the backlight had actually died.
This is a bit confusing as it was intermittent and I would assume that either the backlight is broken or it isnt... However it may have been a combination of the two...
I never had a chance to test the F12 fix that worked for you. I suppose I will wait now and see!
Maybe you have the same issue with dodgy hardware?

  • EMac display has green & red blobs on left of screen and is pinched.

    Hi!
I was using my eMac (as you do) when all of a sudden there was a loud POP! and the whole machine shut off in an instant. I thought it was a gonner, but to my surprise it powered back up but with large green and red (magenta) blobs on the left 1/3 of the screen, and also that side of the screen was slightly vertically pinched; the right hand side of the screen looks perfect and I used the machine to back up my data, all seemed fine and dandy (except for the display).
Is it something simple? I assume the pop indicates that a component in the display circuitry has given up the ghost, but which one?

I've now sold the eMac as a cheap working machine, the new owner knew about the fault before handing over the cash so I wish them luck with it!

  • Is it possible to connect Thunderbolt display to older 17" MBP that has only a Mini displayPort?

    Hello all readers.
I'm in a dilemma, and your input and help will be appreciated.
So, in my household, we have 3 17" MBP we are usng. One has the Thunderbolt, but the other two has only a mini diplayPort (Unibody 2009 models).
I  want to buy the 27 " Cinema display (Thuderbolt) but am wondering, if the display can be used for hooking up all the MBP?.
Also the fact that I work remotely from home (I'm in IT). Sometimes I'd like to hookup Windows Laptops (Sorry for the W word) to the screen also.
Does the new 27" Thunderbolt display support this?.
Thanks in advance for your inputs.
    Cheers.

You cannot make a TB monitor work on machines that lack a TB port.
So, unfortunately, that's a no to both of your questions - unless your Windows laptop has a TB port.
If you want 1 display that will work with both mDP and TB laptops, you need the 27 LED Cinema display, Apple still sells them from their refurbished store.

  • Thunderbolt Display has issue with weird washed-out colors after waking from sleep (after upgrade to Mavericks)

I've got a Thunderbolt Display that I use with my Macbook Air (mid 2012) - usually in clamshell mode.
When I let the computer go to sleep, and then wake it up by clicking the mouse, the monitor turns back on but the colors are washed out and purple looking.
The display goes back to normal when I unplug and replug it to my laptop.
I first noticed this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.
I made a video demonstrating the issue here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19179-MVpWA&feature=youtu.be
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Will

Same thing for me too.  Late 2012 13" MBP Retina.  I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable and plug it back in.
This has only started for me in the last two days.  The first two weeks of Mavericks was ok.
Update:  I just got back from a trip.  I was using the laptop separate from the Thunderbolt display.  I hadn't restarted since I returned and connected the monitor.  I've just rebooted, and put the computer to sleep.  After resuming from sleep, the display is ok.  Maybe try rebooting?  I'll update if it continues.

I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.

See the following thread on the same topic:
2 Thunderbolt displays   MBP = sound coming from both displays?

  • I just bought a new iphone 4S and its has green and purple striiples on the screen when not in use, I took it back to store and they said it was the display protector that is making the striples?

I just bought a new apple iphone 4S and its has green and purple striples on it when not in use, is this norm? I took it back to the Verizonwirless and they said it was from the display protector on the screen?

it was from the display protector on the screen?
Most likely that is the reason.  I have a screen protector on and see similar issues when the iPhone is not on.  They're not noticeable when turned on.  Remove it and see the difference.
