1 XML node to many Text Frames

In indesign is it possible to map the content of a single XML node element to multiple text frames within an Indesign document?
I have data elements in my XML that I don't want to repeat but they have to appear in multiple places within my document.
Is this possible? What's the trick?
Thanks,
Gordon

I don't have it to test with, but might the Linked Stories feature in CS5.5 allow you to do this? Maybe that's worth a look. I don't know of a way to do it in CS5 or before.

  • How to get all xml tags in a text frame?

    I want to get all the xml tags of the text in a text frame. I had tried the following methods but always get the tag binding the frame itself. <br /><br />1) XMLReference objXMLRef = Utils<IXMLUtils>()->QueryXMLReferenceData(textModel, 1);<br /><br />2) XMLReference objXMLRef = Utils<IXMLUtils>()->GetStoryThreadXMLReference(textModel, textIndex);<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

    I would think if you intanciate the XMLReference and use IIDXMLElement GetChildCount / GetNthChild would do what you are looking for.

  • Scripting Selective XML into a Single Text Frame? (& Some Other Stuff...)

    Hi all, I could use some help (using version CS5.5).
    I want to import (via Javascript) an XML file similar to this:
    <movieRoot>
         <dvds>
              <movie>
                   <title>2001: A Space Odyssey</title>
                   <edition>Special Edition</edition>
                   <features>NOTHING</features>
                   <notes/>
              </movie>
              <movie>
                   <title>Airplane!</title>
                   <edition />
                   <features>Extra Laughs</features>
                   <notes/>
              </movie>
         </dvds>
    </movieRoot>
    I've been able to successfully do this, so no problem there.
    Then I want to dump the child elements under the XML element "<dvds>" into a single text frame that spans 2 columns per page. That's easy enough too, except:
    1) I want to filter the data so that empty elements or whose contents equal "NOTHING" do not appear.
    2) I want to add static text title above some of the elements that remain (outside the XML proper).
    3) Then I want to format the text (using Paragraph Styles).
    Tall order, I know, but I'm keen on figuring it out. I initially created a document using placeholders and used the standard XML Import to populate it with data, which was filtered using scripts to remove extraneous placeholders and static text. It gave me the result I wanted, but as the XML will be regularly updated and since the "filtered" tags result in non-standard XML entries, it means starting over from scratch after every XML update. So I turned to scripting...
    For point #1, I was able to filter properly using a recursive IF statement, tested here using message alerts:
    I've included a bunch of variables for (hopefully) easier viewing.
    var myXMLRoot = myDocument.xmlElements.item(0);  //movieRoot
    var myXMLParent = myXMLRoot.xmlElements.item(0);  //dvds
    var myXMLElement = myXMLParent.xmlElements.item(0);  //movie
    var currElement = myXMLElement.xmlElements.item(0);  //title
    for (i = 0; i < myXMLParent.xmlElements.length; i++)
        myXMLElement = myXMLParent.xmlElements.item(i);
        for (j = 0; j < myXMLElement.xmlElements.length; j++)
            currElement = myXMLElement.xmlElements.item(j);
            if (currElement.contents != "" && currElement.contents != "NOTHING")
                alert (currElement.markupTag.name + ": " + currElement.contents);
    It worked great until I tried to get it into an existing text frame. Since I want all the info in one text frame, placexml was out of the question, and markup worked but overwrote XML tags -- such as assigning the entire text frame to <movie/title> when I wanted it assigned to <dvds> with <movie/title> tags nested within it.
    If you can help me with anything, this is really where I need pointed in the right direction most. But if you're feeling generous or bored...
    Then for points #2 and #3, I want to take what's left ("filtered" XML data) and add additional text and formatting wherever certain tags are found.
    For example, applying the paragraph style "MovieTitles" for any text within <title></title> XML tags; or adding the phrase "Special Features" (with paragraph style "Headers") above any text marked with <features> tags, while the content within those <features> tags applies the paragraph style "NormalText."
    I've got some of this worked out in pieces already, but it generally falls apart because I can't get the tag structure correct in the text frame. I can provide more info as requested. Any help would be mighty appreciated!
    UPDATE: Surprisingly, I've actually had some good success this evening on solving most of these problems. I'll post my results once I've finished up just in case anyone else can be helped by what I've learned.
    One question remains for the moment: I've inserted text within an XML element, but outside of XML tags (e.g., </title>EDITION:<edition>) using "insertTextAsContent":
    [xmlElementHere].insertTextAsContent("EDITION:", XMLElementPosition.beforeElement);
    Does anyone know a good way to apply a paragraph style to that text without using a find & replace function later (after placing the XML into a text frame)?

    As posted into the other thread:
    Yes, each record will be in its own frame.
    You can use one of a couple solutions to stitch (link) each frame to the other, delete all but the first page and the first merged record, then resize that first merge frame and reflow the entire document.
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1341730?start=0&tstart=0
    Please review this thread. There is a couple posts with a script and you would want the last version of that script. You would have to follow the directions, as well as add a column at the beginning of your data and fill it with consecutive numbers.
    Alternatively, there is a free plug-in by Rohiko for stitching merge data frames together, then follow the process above to reflow the document.

  • Unwanted side head formatting in text frames

    In my document, I use many text frames within anchored frames.  Without my knowledge of having done anything, all of my text frames now have side heads within them.  So all of the text that I entered has disappeared.  See example below.
    I can see it if I stretch the text frame large enough.  See below:
    Now, when I create new text frames with text within them, they look fine.  They maintain their proper formatting.  But all of the ones created before a few days ago look like above.
    In addition, the footer changed formatting w/o my doing anything.  The left side of the footer moved in to the left to the column margin, as if there was supposed to be a side head in the formatting of the footer text box.  I imported page formatting from another document and this problem corrected itself.
    Thank you.

    This has happened,
    heck still happens to me.
    (more than once)
    even today, to ONE chapter of a 14+chapter document..
    I too did not CHANGE any of my settings, it just decided it wanted my text boxes to have side headers.
    (which is why I found your question while trying to find an answer.)
    The fastest way I have found SO FAR to fix it, is to
    Select each text box,
    Right Click
    Object Properties
    The Text Frame Properties box shows up, and it has a check box in the Flow -Room for Side Heads pane.
    Now, I have no idea why, but my FM11 decided that it wanted 1.5" with .25gap on my text boxes.
    I had to un-check, and Apply.
    but it was easier than copying the information and putting it in a new text box, (which oddly enough, also works...  )

  • Polulate Text frames with XML content - PLEASE help me.

    Hi guys,
    I'm trying to import some xml data to an indesign file. Here are the steps I'm doing:
    1- create new document
    2- create master page
    3- create empty text fields in the master to be tagged
    4- import tags from xml
    5- import xml
    then it simply don't auto populate the text fields wiith the xml content.
    I've already spent about 10 hours trying to figure out what can be the problem...
    My structure in indesign (BEFORE importing XML):
    businesscards
    Card
    employeeName
    employeePosition
    employeeAddressln1
    employeeAddressln2
    employeePhone
    employeeEmail
    My structure in indesign (AFTER importing XML):
    businesscards
    Card <!-- has dropdown arrow with xml content inside -->
    Card <!-- has dropdown arrow with xml content inside -->
    Card <!-- has dropdown arrow with xml content inside -->
    Card <!-- has dropdown arrow with xml content inside -->
    employeeName
    employeePosition
    employeeAddressln1
    employeeAddressln2
    employeePhone
    employeeEmail
    But it doesn't populate the text frames...
    I've already tried to write text in the text frames and tagged them, so I can see those colored brackets. But it doesn't work and makes a mess in the structure.
    Please, can someone help me, do you know a good step by step tutorial online? What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance

    It worked! thanks ... But...
    But only if I don't apply to the Master when I apply to the master all the other cards have the same content as the first of the XML. :(
    Even when I try to create multiple pages (cards) with no Master page (too time consuming), I can't figure out a way of having the other cards filed with the remaining data of the XML. :(
    I don't want to drag the elements one by one to every single card (they are so many...)
    Is there a way of having the structure organized in a way to have indesign auto populate and auto create pages?
    thanks for any kind of advice.

  • InDesign CS3 Scripting XML Import Multiple Images into same Text Frame

    I am having trouble importing multiple images into the same Text Frame using XML import. I imported 5 images into the text frame. However, all 5 images are laying on top of one another. Does anyone know if there is a way to have all images laying out like how Microsoft Word handles inline images, i.e., laying out next image to the right of previsous image in the same line and if there is not enough space left in the line, then wrap to next line. Thanks in advance. I understand I could use JavaScript to do post import processing, e.g, calculate the image size and place each images accordingly. But I am trying to see whether there is a way to do this without scripts.

    You can apply an object style to all anchored images by script. A text frame containing main flow should be selected.
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var textFrame =  app.selection[0];
    var rectangles = textFrame.texts[0].rectangles;
    if (rectangles.length > 0) {
         for (var i=0; i < rectangles.length; i++) {
              rectangles[i].appliedObjectStyle = doc.objectStyles.item("Cover");
    However, there is a better approach:
    Step 1
    Create place holders for a single "Book" element and format it as needed -- apply an object style to the cover.
    Step 2
    Import the xml file -- the placeholders are replaced with data from the 1st xml element
    Step 3
    Drag & drop the element containing all "Books" elements into the main flow -- all elements are placed and formatted the same way as in step 1.
    Finally, add a new page, click the overset text icon and autoflow text to add pages so that to fit all the text.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to map more than one xml element with some Paragraph in a Text Frame

    Hi friends,
    I am new in InDesign Java Scripting and I have to place or map, more than one xml elements of different parents, into one textbox. Is it possible through JavaScript? Can anyone help me in this because I have no idea how it should work and it urgently required.
    Thanks in Advance

    I had answered to you already in your first post: the short answer is that it's not possible on the same text box unless you assign a common ancestor of these two "parents" item. That's not a question of scripting, it's the way Indesign handle the XML with the layout. Import a xml in Indesign and drop tags to page item. What you can do manually is quite representative of what can be done through scripting.
    If you assign this anscestor to the text frame, you have to expect that all text child items will be displayed in the text frame (including the text of all the child of the two "parents" and all the other parents/childs that could be under the common ancestor). Having a XML that is designed for Indesign usage is pretty much inevitable if you are doing anything "serious".

  • Add xml tag to specific words in a text frame

    Dear all,
    I'm pretty sure this can't be too much of a hassle, but after hours of experimenting, searching and reading I can't seem to look at it from the right angle. I'm trying to find a way to search for a specific word ('Figure', in my case) in a given text frame, and add a corresponding XML tag to it automatically. I've found plenty of information on how to apply it to a page item as a whole, but from there no approach seems to work. Seeing as I'm fairly new to InDesign scripting, any nudge in the right direction would be an immense help.
    Kind regards and thanks in advance,
    Julian

    Hi Julian,
    Is this you asking?
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    app.findTextPreferences.findWhat = "figure";
    var found = doc.findText();
    for(var i =0;i<found.length;i++)
            doc.xmlElements[0].xmlElements.add({markupTag:"figure", xmlContent:found[i]});

  • XML Text Frame?

    how to create a text frame object importing/converting xml (application)?
    Thanks

    Hello,
    when doing structured work in FM you can do this either by using xml files or fm files (with structure in them).
    As soon as you use .fm-files rather than xml files, you can do the following:
    1. insert an element that inserts an image (=which is declared in the EDD)
    2. after having inserted the image, delete it but leave the empty frame.
    3. into this frame, put a text frame and into this text frame, import whatever you like.
    Warning:
    This is only possible with .fm files. With .xml-files it is not possible. So if you plan to move your .fm-files to .xml files you will get errors.
    Also, as far as I can see, there is no validation inside such frames. This can be good (because you can insert unstructured text) or bad (as there is no validation).
    Generally speaking, I know of no standard xml-dialect which hase something as a "frame"-Element. It is true that you can have FM interpret elements as Frames, but this is an FM specific thing.
    So, if you want to do this, this also means that you have to build your own dialect or extend an existing one, which means that you bind yourself to non-standard.
    You might try to think about why you want to do this in the first place. If you´d like to do it, because you want to include XML or MIF with pictures and their descriptions ("1: screw; 2: switch"...), you could do an AI or EPS that contains the graphics and the text, or you could import the graphics normally and put the descriptions underneath in a normal table.
    Hope this helps,
    Franz.

  • How do we work with Text Frames in a structured xml template

    Hi ,
    I am working with structured template using Framemaker 7.2. I need to add Text Frame in the structured template. Could you please tell me how do I add text frame with the body page of a strcutred template.
    Thanks
    Manas.

    Hi Manas,
    Text frames work the same whether the template is structured or unstructured. The only thing you should be aware of is that a text frame creates another flow, which can be structured or unstructured. In either case, you will not be able to export its contents to XML. You didn't mention XML specifically, just thought I would note that.
    Do you need general instructions on inserting a text frame? If so, I think the user guide should have that.

  • How to find associated text frame with XML element?

    Hello experts, I am new to InDesign CS SDK and have a question.
    I am building an Extension to import an XML document into an InDesign template. As the content in XML can be unpredictable, in the Extension, I want to loop through all the XML elements and make sure it has associated text frames, and if it doesn't, I want to create a text frame and set the content to the text frame.
    I think I figured out how to create a new text frame in page and set the content in the frame, but I am having difficulty finding an associated text frame for an XML element.
    If anyone has a sample code finding a text frame for an XML element, I appriciate it. Or if anyone can tell me what document I need to look, it will be great too.
    Thanks,

    Here's a code snipet with null checks removed:

        InterfacePtr< IFrameList > frameList( textModel->QueryFrameList() );
        UID aFrameUID = frameList->GetNthFrameUID( 0 );

  • How to get Total Number of XML Nodes?

    Hello All,
    I have a Flash program I'm doing in Actionscript 3, using CS6.
    I'm using the XMLSocket Class to read-in XML Data. I will write some sample XML Data that is being sent to the Flash
    program below...
    I know with this line here (below) I can access the 4th "element or node" of that XML Data.
         Accessing XML Nodes/Elements:
    // *I created an XML Variable called xml, and "e.data" contains ALL the XML Data
    var xml:XML = XML(e.data);
    // Accessing the 4th element of the data:
    xml.MESSAGE[3].@VAR;          --->     "loggedOutUsers"
    xml.MESSAGE[3].@TEXT;         --->     "15"
         SAMPLE XML DATA:
         <FRAME>
    0               <MESSAGE VAR="screen2Display" TEXT="FRAME_1"/>
    1               <MESSAGE VAR="numUsers" TEXT="27"/>
    2               <MESSAGE VAR="loggedInUsers" TEXT="12"/>
    3               <MESSAGE VAR="loggedOutUsers" TEXT="15"/>
    4               <MESSAGE VAR="admins" TEXT="2"/>
         </FRAME>
    I'm new to Flash and Actionscript but I'm very familiar with other languages and how arrays work and such, and I know for
    example, in a Shell Script to get the total number of elements in an array called "myArray" I would write something like
    this --> ${#myArray[@]}. And since processing the XML Data looks an awful lot like an array I figured there was maybe
    some way of accessing the total number of "elements/nodes" in the XML Data...?
    Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
    Thanks in Advance,
    Matt

    Hey vamsibatu, thanks again for the quick reply!
    Ohhh, ok I gotcha. That makes more sense.
    So I just tried this loop below and I guess I could use this and just keep assigning an int variable to the output so
    when it finishes I will be left with a variable containing the total number of elements:
    for (var x:int in xml.MESSAGE)
         trace("x == " + x);
    *Which OUTPUTS the Following:
    x == 0
    x == 1
    x == 2
    x == 3
    x == 4
    So I guess I could do something like this and when the loop completes I will be left with the total number of elements/nodes...
    var myTotal:int;
    for (var x:int in xml.MESSAGE)
        myTotal = x;
    // add '1' to myTotal since the XML Data is zero-based:
    myTotal += 1;
    trace("myTotal == " + myTotal);
    *Which Prints:
    "myTotal == 5"
    Thanks again for you suggestions, much appreciated!
    I think that should be good enough for what I needed. Thanks...
    Thanks Again,
    Matt

  • XML: Using static & placeholder text inside element with children?

         Row
              Company_name
              Physical_address
              Phone
              Website
              Email_address
         Row
              Company_name
              Physical_address
              Phone
              Website
              Email_address
    etc.
    The row element will be repeated many times. In setting up my InDesign document I’d like to use static text within each Row element. What’s confusing me is where I should use the Row tag. I’d like my imported XML data to run as continuous text, thus:
    Company: placeholder text
    Address: placeholder text
    placeholder text
    placeholder text
    placeholder text
    Company: placeholder text
    Address: placeholder text
    placeholder text
    placeholder text
    placeholder text
    I tried setting it up like this, with the parent text frame given the Root tag:
    <Row>Company: <Company_name>placeholder text</Company_name>
    Address: <Physical_address>placeholder text</Physical_address>
    <Phone>placeholder text</Phone>
    <Website>placeholder text</Website>
    <Email_address>placeholder text</Email_address></Row>
    …but when I import my XML file I lose all my static text and each child element is indented more than its parent element. I would guess that by placing my static text within the Row tag it gets replaced when each Row element is imported, but where else would I place it? Do I have to create anchored text frames (tagged with Row) within the Root frame to hold each Row element?
    I’d appreciate any insights.

    OK, I’ve figured out the first problem. I just needed to play around with the options in the dialogue that comes up when importing XML. Specifically, the “Do not import contents of whitespace-only elements” needs to be checked. I still don’t see why that should affect whether or not my static text stays in place.
    Now, my new question is this: It looks like all the child elements of a container element have to appear in the document in the same order in which they appear in the XML file. Is this right? If I swap my Email_address and Website tags around in my placeholder text, either the email address disappears or it appears at the end (depending on the options I select in the dialogue upon import). So if I want to change the order in which they appear I have to do so in the XML file as well?

  • Asign paragraph styles to xml nodes

    Hello all,
    I try to asign paragraph styles to xml nodes. I tried to autoasign the styles to tags and also to assign the styles directly to the xml tags with aid:pstyle. None of it with success. I think that this happens because there is a paragraph formating missing in my xml. I tried to change this with <aid:br/> but also no success.
    This is how my xsl looks like:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="2.0">
      <xsl:output method = "xml" version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" indent="yes"/>
      <xsl:strip-space elements="*"/>
      <xsl:template match="ooo_sheet">
        <Root>
          <xsl:for-each select="ooo_row">
              <Artikel>
              <xsl:copy-of select="Artikelnummer"/>
                  <Bild>
                        <xsl:attribute name="href">
                      <xsl:text>file:///</xsl:text>
                      <xsl:value-of select="Bildpfad"/>
                        </xsl:attribute>
                  </Bild>
                  <Text xmlns:aid="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/4.0/" xmlns:aid5="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/5.0/">
                        <EK aid5:pstyle="EK"><xsl:value-of select="EK"/><aid:br/></EK>
                    <Details aid5:pstyle="Details"><xsl:value-of select="Details"/><aid:br/></Details>
                    <Abmessungen aid5:pstyle="Abmessungen"><xsl:value-of select="Abmessungen"/><aid:br/></Abmessungen>
                    <Artikelnummer aid5:pstyle="Artikelnummer"><xsl:value-of select="Artikelnummer"/><aid:br/></Artikelnummer>
                  </Text>
              </Artikel>
          </xsl:for-each>
        </Root>
      </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    I want to achieve that I can pull the the following tag from the structure view in Indesign to a textframe and the text gets the different formating.
    <Text xmlns:aid="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/4.0/" xmlns:aid5="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/5.0/">
                        <EK aid5:pstyle="EK"><xsl:value-of select="EK"/><aid:br/></EK>
                    <Details aid5:pstyle="Details"><xsl:value-of select="Details"/><aid:br/></Details>
                    <Abmessungen aid5:pstyle="Abmessungen"><xsl:value-of select="Abmessungen"/><aid:br/></Abmessungen>
                    <Artikelnummer aid5:pstyle="Artikelnummer"><xsl:value-of select="Artikelnummer"/><aid:br/></Artikelnummer>
    </Text>
    Could anyone point me to the right direction? Any help is very welcome. Thank you for your help.

    Sorry, my last example was the xsl instead of the xml. Here is the xml I got. I want to pull the Root/Artikel/Text Tag to a frame and all Child tags within should be formated with the corresponding pstyles.
    But it looks like as if Indesign just does not tranform the aid5 style upon xml/xlst import. The <aid:br> tags you see are just a try of myself to get the tags within the Text tag separated as paragraph.
    But Indesign just interprets them as normal tags and also shows them in the structure pane.
    Thank you very much for your help. I also tried to format the text with the paragraph styles by hand and export the whole thing as xml from Indesign. But Indesign just the xml the same way I imported it. The same happens when I manually create a xml structure in Indesign, assign the styles to the text within the frame. Indesign just exports the raw xml structure. But no style declarations. So I can't see how to format the tags the right way.
    This is how my xml looks like when I import it with the upper xsl.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>

            </Text>
         </Artikel>
    </Root>
    All the xsl: transformations work but the aid: and aid5: transformations just show in the xml as they where in the xsl.
