1 year warranty

1 year warranty
A friend and I got identical ipod nano’s at Christmas 2005. I look after my ipod nano as if it were my child. In the 5months I have had it, it has not a single scratch is to be seen on the surface. My friend does not take as much care as me and his is very battered and worn.
However, yesterday I sat down on the sofa with my ipod wrapped up in my pocket. The headphones must have pushed down on the screen. This cracked the screen indelibly.
I understand that ipod products have a 1 year warranty so I should be able to get a repair or replacement due to the cause of the problem not being an “accident” but due to the poor manufacture of the screen.
So, the problem is: What do I do to get a repair/replacement/refund?
I search the website? – Can’t find what to do.
I email the local apple store – no reply.
My A-level exams are in a few weeks, and this should be the least of my worries so a quick resolution is imperative.
What am I to do?
I was going to buy an apple laptop because I like the look of them but if the poor service from apple and fragility of my ipod nano is anything to go by, I don’t think I will make the same mistake again. Then again, if I can get a rapid resolution I might think again.
Thanks,
Ian Woodrow.

"According to Macworld, Apple said that they have tracked down the problem of broken screens.
“This is a real but minor issue involving a vendor quality problem in a small number of units,” Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller told MacCentral. “In fact, this issue has affected less than 1/10 of 1 percent of the total iPod nano units that we’ve shipped. It is not a design issue.”
Schiller said that if customers find they have this problem, all they have to do is contact AppleCare and their iPod will be replaced.

And this shows many, many more people with the same problem:

Not just me being "careless", I should get a repair under my 1 year warranty.
