10.000 rpm HD

Hello all,
Is it possible to install a 10.000 rpm HD into a PowerPC G5 1,6 GHz.
I know the size limit for the controller is 500 Gb, but I have no clue about any speed limit or whether the controller will manage the drive speed.
Thanks a lot.
Cheers.

You are really going to find it isn't the controller, it is SATA II specs and features, plus, you are just as well off with a $77 7.2k 640GB drive. 3-5 yrs ago, yes, 10K Raptor made sense. Today, not really.

  • 10,000 RPM HD for LP9 - Projects  ?

    Hi,
Would using a 10,000 RPM HD for LP9 projects, help improve the overall performance/response of the system, compared to 7,200 RPM HD. when working with Logic Pro 9 projects ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks,
I will be working with rather a large count of audio tracks, mainly audio stems recorded into LP9 from slave PCs hosting VST instruments. Which I would then need to edit, mix, and process in LP9.
I guess having a fast drive (10K RPM) would make audio work snappier when editing ?

  • MBP 17" Fans constantly on at 6,000 RPM

The fans on My Mac Book Pro 17" 2.4GHz have recently started to come on all the time. About 5 minutes after booting up or coming out of sleep the fire up to their full RPM, even though I'm using a Griffin iCurve which elevate the MBP about 5 inches off the desk.
I had a look at previous thread on fans and downloaded iStat pro. This shows the fans running at or around 6,000 rpm within minutes of starting up and they stay on until the MBP is put to sleep or shuts down.
I've put a screen grab of the iStat Pro readout here: http://www.digitalbeginners.ie/images/mbp_fans.jpg
Anyone any ideas? Any help appreciated,
    Dave

Hi; thank you for posting the readouts; temps do not seem high at all, do they, for any sensor to be asking for 6K RPM (on my MBP, temps are higher than yours and fan's @ 2K)? And, your temps are all discrete (ie, not like one is zero or n/a, for there to be a totally disconnected lead)? I'm thinking a sensor (by being ditzo) is by default asking for the 6K RPMs without showing the higher temp in iStat. Since it takes several minutes from a cold start to zoom up to 6K, it starts off fresh each time, then a safety default to 6K occurs when something doesn't communicate or starts cutting in and out.
When your MBP is doing the 6K, restart w/DVD1 and do the hardware test for SNS (wait a couple minutes first, and hope the fans go to 6K again) as discussed here, from a Sept07 thread: http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=c190&search=Go&q=fan+6000
" ... they always stick to 6000 RPM
OK then I'm 99% sure the main sensor lead has come off - the hardware is set to run both fans at 100% under those conditions and nothing will circumvent that.
Re: MBP fans are constantly on at 6000 RPM ...
If they have both always run at 6000rpm it's likely the temperature sensor lead has been disconnected and/or one or more of the sensors has failed. ...
Run the hardware tests from install DVD1 (hold d at Boot) and see if it reports any MTR (fan motor) or SNS (temperature sensor) errors ...
OK that's going to need a service and the lead re-attaching or the sensor replacing ..."

  • Hard drive remains spinning at 5,000 rpm, and doesn't spin down by itself!

OK, I thought this was a fan problem until I installed the iStat Pro widget, and discovered that my hard drive was spinning at 5,000 rpm even when no operations were being performed. It doesn't slow down on its own, and I have to put the drive to sleep to get the rpm to return to around 1200 rpm, which seems more normal to me. However, over time (perhaps 20-30 minutes) the rpm gets back up to 5K again. But the CPU fan stays constant at around 1200 rpm. This doesn't seem normal to me. Oh, and Apple just replaced the hard drive on this five-week old iMac. Before I got the new drive, it was not noisy, and did not rev as high, and stay high. Any feedback about this situation would be helpful. I think I'm probably going to end up taking it back to the Genius Bar (sigh)...

    Hello grejambri
That does sound like a problem with the Hard Drive or it's temperature sensor.
One thing you might want to do is run the Apple Hardware Test to see if it reports a problem with the HD's temp. sensor. > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Then be sure to record and report any test results to the folks that replaced your Hard Drive.

  • 10,000 rpm too loud?

thinking about purchasing a Western 10,000 rpm drive for dual 2.0 G5. anyone ever experience to much hum for recording purposes. read mixed reviews about this and is kind of scary. any help???

I think 10,000 rpm might be overkill for Audio. It will turn faster, which means more heat, more noise, and it will age faster. Usually, in Audio applications, throughput is not a limitation as much as seek time is.
You get a "disk too slow" error when the drive doesn't have time to find a new file it's supposed to play, not when the drive is already in the middle of playing a file and can't do it anymore.
Most professionals I know use 7,200 rpm SATA drives. The bigger the better (not just for storage considerations...)

  • IMac in sleep mode with fans blasting at 5,000 RPM?

When I came home from work my iMac was still in sleep mode with the fans running at nearly 5,000 rpm, was very loud. Anyone having the same issue?
I tested it with TechTools Deluxe and it didn't find any issues.

Reset the SMC and if that doesn't do it reset the PRAM. I think the SMC reset will take care of it though.
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Just replaced my fans, running at 000 RPM

    Hi guys,
I recently replaced the fans on my macbook pro because they were making horrible buzzing noises sometimes. I ocassionaly run games and movies on my laptop, and have not had much problem with overheating. However, after i got my new fans simple tasks were causing my mac to overheat and slow down my mac in general. I downloaded an application called SMCFancontrol to get my fans running, but no matter what i changed in the preferences, my fan speed stayed at 000 RPM, and simple tasks overheated my laptop. I guess my question is why is this happening and what are the easiest solutions to fix this?
    All answers are appreciated,
    Thanks

You did not install the fans correctly or did not connect the cables correctly or the fans are not the right models for your computer.

  • Loud Fans Running Around 6,000 RPM

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro that i bought about 2 1/2 years ago. It has NEVER been dropped, but recently I have been having many problems. All of a sudden it won't stay latched shut and most importantly the fans hum so ridiculously loud that I can't even think straight. After about 5 minutes on the computer it starts going crazy. I just downloaded the iStatPro and it says that my right and left fans are operating between 4,000-6,000rpm. (6,000 when it's really loud, 4,000 at a soft hum) I'm really hesitant to take my computer apart looking for dust or anything but can anyone help me fix this?

For the latch not working, check out the comments posted to this U-Tube video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suAPc7jp1I8
If your top hooks in the display part of the latch are OK, then it may just be a matter of getting the bottom part working again.
If the other solutions don't work, also run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to see if perhaps a thermal sensor has stopped working.
    Good luck!

Note that you have posted in the wrong forum. This is the Mac Pro forum, not the MacBook Pro forum.
The problem you've described may be caused by a runaway process. Open the Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder, set the Processes drop down menu to All Processes. Click twice on the CPU column to display in descending order. Look for a process using a lot of CPU time and/or may be displayed in red. If you find one then select it and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar, then click on the Force Quit button. Note down the name of the process as you may need to track down why it wasn't working properly.

  • Internal Fans running at maintained speed over 5,000 RPM

My MBP is about 3 months old. Both the left and right internal fans are running at between 4,900 and 5,400 RPM continuously. I am not running any heavy programs, only iTunes and Firefox. Installed the iStat widget which shows all temperature readings below 46degrees. Some posts here have said the fans might need to be replaced. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. Id prefer not to have to take my MBP to apple and have it shipped off for repairs for 3 weeks.
    Thanks.

46 C = 114 F? Yah, that is hot. Under Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU, does any process show signs of thrashing (esp FireFox)? I use FireFox, like it a lot (esp under View > AdBlockPlus > Blockable Items, I can filter urls that bring my 3G cell-phone internet connection to its knees) and right now I show 21.1 % CPU for FireFox. and minimal Disk Activity. I do heat up occasionally, and hear my fans spin up ... at which time I turn on the NotePal laptop stand USB fan, since I mainly use the MBP in clamshell mode and with the external monitor. I also use Fan Control (donationware, from MacUpdate.com) and set fans to rock a bit quicker, so I don't lag the rise in temp? Please check these items out and post back. With the Fan Control utility at least you should know if the fans are trying. I've tried all the other Utilities and like Fan Control best ... The MBP does run warm when it is thrashing, so make sure you are all updated, esp FireFox. Maybe try quitting FireFox for a day, use Safari, see if that isolates something? FireFox can be tweaked so easily, which is what I had to do to run cooler ... please post back your cpu and disk spex for FireFox. Also it helps to shut down, boot up with command-option-p-r keys depressed, hear the bong chime twice, then release keys. SMC reset doesn't hurt, occasionally; just to clear the air. All software should be updated to current version. iTunes does have issues too (I focused on FireFox, above). iTunes can go on-and-on (looking for the store, holding the entire collection of the worlds' music in abeyance for immediate play, whatever). Try quitting iTunes, or at least looking in Activity Monitor what it is attempting to do on your behalf, unasked ...

  • Is it possible to Clone system dr.230Gb 7200rpm drive to 150Gb 10,000 rpm?

For some reason i remember reading a artical stating that you cannot clone from bigger drive to smaller if you do it does something with the system id and you will have to re-enter serials for your software Is this true if so is there a work around?
    Thanks for any info!

Thanks hatter i been doing a little research and what i want to accomplist is clone existing system drive via CCC to 10k 300GB VelociRaptor for OS and apps(thanks for recommendation),2nd drive in my g5 Quad is a 7200 500Gb seagate or maxter i really don't remember and that is dedicated for all my audio samples for music making. Then after i been doing some research i came across the "sonnet G5 Jive" for internal expansion of 3 HD's sata 1 or sata2.I realize my board is only capable of 1.5 not 3.0 which is okay for now until i make the jump in a couple of years to the mac pro.As for the 3rd drive that will be mounted in the sonnet enclosure will be another 10k 300GB Velociraptor for recording audio and completed project files.
Oh yeah in my pci e slots 1 & 2 are currently occupied by graphic cards so i have 2 slots left and on the sonnet website @ http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/ENCG53HD/
Includes all necessary mounting hardware and cables (SATA host controller card, such as Tempo SATA E4i or Tempo SATA X4i sold separately).
So im guessing it comes with a SATA host controller.I cannot find any info on the Tempo SATA X4i or the difference between the two.
Any help i would greatly appreciate it.

  • Western Digital 10000 rpm on G4?

Hi, i'd like to buy a Western Digital 74 Gb SATA 10000 rpm disk.
do you know if it works with my G4? (of course with a pci sata adapter)

    Hi
Yes both drives are 10,000 rpm. They're also the newer 16MB cache models.
I think the Western Digital web page must be out of date, as all Macs these days ship with SATA drives anyway, and as far as I'm aware a SATA drive is a SATA drive as far as the OS is concerned. I seem to remember there were one or two SATA incompatibilities at the hardware level in that some manufacturers shipped SATA drives with SSC (spread spectrum clocking) enabled which isn't supported by most PCI SATA cards (or the SATA controller in some Macs come to that), but from memory this only related to certain Seagate drives (7200.9s?).
I certainly haven't had any problems with mine in a Quicksilver 2002. In fact they're the only drives installed internally, one being used as the OS X boot drive. Some people mention possible heat issues and I wouldn't stack the drives in the U shaped bracket, one on top of the other. I've one in the front drive bay and one in the rear, both on the flat drive sledges rather than in the U shaped bracket.

  • Fan speed varies 0 - 42 000 !! on K7N2G-ILSR

    Hello people! :D
I have MSI K7N2G-ILSR board. I use the on board cpu fan connector for my cpu fan.
The problem is this: according to PC-Alert the fan speed varies very much: sometimes PC-Alert says the fan is spinning over 42 000 rpm/min REALLY! and sometimes it says 0 rpm/min (it is an enermax adjustable fan)!
I didn't have this problem say 2 months ago, but now I have it all the time. I have to switch off the PC-Alert to use the PC. I have tried other surveillance programs too and they give the same result!
I have the newest version of PC-Alert installed. Other details you can find in my signature below.
    Best wishes to you all
    Tatu Heiskanen

    Hia again!
The fan problem was a simple one: if fan rotates less then approx 2000 rpm/min mainboards bios can't detect the rotationspeed correctly!
So I raised the rpms over 2000 & all is ok!
    Cya all!

  • ODD fan running full speed, 0 rpm read through smcfancontrol

    Hello,
I have a 2011 iMac 21,5 inch. I replaced the harddrive and the known fan problem arose. The HDD temp couldn't be read.
I therefore installed a 7 pin cable instead that is able to read the HDD temp and the fan seems to be working fine.
The ODD fan on the other hand is running wild. It starts when I start the computer and doesn't stop till i completely switch it off. When i
look at smcFancontrol, and all the other programs, the stats show 000 rpm. Temperatures seem good and logical. I also tried
installing another ODD fan, reset the SMC and the PRAM.
When i look at the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) the following error occurs:   4MOT/4/40000002: ODD-0
Any suggestions on what the problem could be?
    Thanks!
    Kind regards,
    Bas

I did a full check of the iMac. Checked every cable and connector. I found out that one of the pins in the connecter of the optical drive
was slightly pushed back. After seeing the pin to it's position and connecting all the components the iMac is now reading an ODD rpm again .
I am slightly skeptical about the pushed back pin being the problem because my idea is that the RPM is directly related to the different connecter
(temp. sensor ODD). If anyone could give me an answer to this, I welcome it, but for now the computer is running perfect. I am going to do a full
reinstall now to check if everything is running normal in original state (without smcFan control).
Thanks for your help thus far. Hope this discussion helps others as well.
