10.10.1 Installing Software Update Stuck
It has been a couple of hours now with my iMac 2010 sitting on "About 4 minutes".
I had a similar experience installing the OS to begin with but this looks different... Restart?
UPDATE:
I reset PRAM (power down, restart holding command+alt+P+R, wait for two startup chimes, then release): it then restarted the update process as expected, but hung again at about the same spot (again I lost the progress bar sometime before it hung).
Next I rebooted into Safe Mode (power down, restart holding Shift until the apple logo and progress bar appear): this time the progress bar remained until it hung, about 40% into the process. Within a minute of hanging, the computer powered itself off (that was new!).
Finally, I powered up again normally, heard the startup chime (I wasn't hearing that originally after restarts from the hang) and it seemed to run quite a bit beyond the point it had locked up at before. I lost the progress bar again though, and a minute or so later, it hung again.
I'm out of ideas......................
NOTE: at no time do I get anything telling me how much time remains. just a simple progress bar (which then disappears some time before it hangs). Why is mine different from yours I wonder?
Also, I hear plenty of normal hard drive activity right up to the point it hangs, then the HD activity stops pretty abruptly. I do hear a few normal "clucks" now and then afterwards like the HD is polling... but no progress on the update. I have waited about 30 minutes so far with no joy...
Next step I guess is to restart using an external drive, and try to reinstall the update manually (from a full download). Hopefully that will work!

My iMac seems to have frozen during the update- how long should I expect the update to take? The 'installing software update' bar is still showing itself working but has been stuck in the same position for over an hour. Any thoughts?
Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery. -
My macbook air is stuck at the "installing software updated" screen while installing update for the osX. What should I do?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your Mac has been installing software updates for a long time, Software Update is probably frozen. Hold the Power button until your MacBook Air turns off, and turn it on again. OS X should start up. -
While running the latest update, my 2010 MBP is stuck at "Installing Software Update". I installed Win7 on Bootcamp prior to running the update. How csan i tell if the Update is still running, the status bar is nearly completed. Thanks
i managed to resolve the issue by simply powering down and up again. Booted up fine and update shows to have completed successfully.

Software Update stuck !!!
The Software Update on my iMac doesn't work! The progress bar (scanning the installed software) gets stuck almost at the end and I can't even click "cancel" any more. The program stops responding. I have to force Software Update to quit! I installed Leopard as an "erase and install" two days ago, so it's a fresh as OS...
Apart from that annoying bug, not being able to update I would like to know if it could harm my newly installed OS or the application "Software Update" when I force it to quit.
Your answers are much appreciated!Hi WMR,
Try leaving it as long as you can. Sometimes, when the computer is installing/scanning stuff, and you start pressing around on it, it freezes. So try and rn it again, and leave it to do whatever, for as long as it needs to. If, say after 2/3 hours it is still not moving, then there is a problem.
Also, what type of internet connection do you have? If you're wireless, you may have some packet loss/disconnection that causes the download to time out?
I',m not sure, just throwing some stuff out there.
Cheers and good luck,

Software Update stuck: "Moving files into place"
Software Update stuck. In OS C Lion (10.7.4) I ran Software Update on 25-Jul-2012 (The day when OS X Mountain Lion was released). Software Update had 5 updates, such as Safari 6.0, Remote Desktop, iPhoto (?). Software update gets about 95% done, based on the progress bar. Then it hangs... for hours. I finally had to force-Quit Software Update. Rebooted. Tried again. Same problem. Rebooted and rest the PRAM (command-option-P-R) at start-up. Ran Software Update and had the same problem. Software Update hangs while "Moving files into place." Has anyone else seen this problem and know how to get it to work?
I discovered that if I selected only one update at a time to install, all but one installed (i.e., Remote Desktop, Safari 6, and iWork update). The one update that did not install was the iPhoto update. I had left the install to run overnight (about 7 hours). Console log for /var/log/install.log when installing iPhoto update follows:

Applying all update\patches during 'install software update' step
Hi,
I have created software update group (around 10 updates\patches) and deploy it to 'unknown computers' collection. Ts 'Install software update' step scans through and only installs 2 updates out of 10. I have kept deploy property as 'required' while publishing
on 'unknown computers' and 'install software update' has 'All Software update' selected (other option is mandatory update'). I want to have all the 10 required update to be installed . any idea what should be the settings on 'deploy' prperty for software group
that install all the updates in the group during 'install software update' step? Any pointers will be appreciated
Regards,Hi,
Yes , they need a reboot and reboot is happening automatically. I believe, once reboot is done, other patches should take over with installation. I don't see any information for another updates that are part of same software group. For these 2 succefully
installed updates log has below that indicates they reboot and finish.
WUHandler has log:

Is there no other option? No magic key combo that brings up a secret menu?
