10.10.2 broke wifi in OS X (but not win8 in Parallels)

After upgrading from 10.10.1 to 10.10.2, my MacBook Pro connects to my Apple Extreme via Wifi, but not to the Internet. (On a side note, the Extreme also reports not having an Internet connection.)
However, other devices connected to the Extreme via Wifi, do access the Internet (they run Android, iOS and Windows 8). And on the same Mac that can't reach the Internet, I'm running Parallels Desktop with Windows 8 installed, and here I'm getting a good Internet connection (Parallels is running its network adapter in bridged mode, meaning it's visible to the Extreme as a separate machine).
So, despite the Extreme's odd status, the Internet is available to all my devices, but not Mac OS X. Also, the Mac's wifi hardware must be working, since it's good enough for Parallels on the very same machine.
What is it, then, that's causing OS X to not connect to the Internet?

After Yosemite 10.10.2, the Wifi at work is so broken that I have to open a Terminal to ping 8.8.8.8 to see if I am still online.
My Terminal typically looks like:
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2999 ttl=49 time=981.657 ms

  • Wifi works at home but not when away from home

My Wifi works at home but not when away from home, what is wrong?  I thought with a phone plan I didn't need to have a wifi connection.

You either need WiFi or Cellular (or both). If you have neither, you can't connect to the internet.
Most people use WiFi at home and Cellular while away from home, or connect to public WiFi networks where there are some.

why does  my  touch  show  wifi connection in settings  but not  when  i  switch  to  main  page ?

In Setting>wifi, is the a check mark by the network you think you are connected to?
What do you mean by the main page? The upper left of the iPod's screen?

My WiFi works on my MacBook but not on my Ipad/Iphone.  I use Airport by Apple for my WiFi.  Any ideas?

Plus you might get better support in an iOS or iPad or Wi-Fi forum in the Apple Support Communities. This does not sound like a Mavericks-related problem.

  • F4580 - WiFi works on Vista but not XP???

Just bought a F4580 as needed WiFi (old PSC 1410 still working OK). Have installed onto Vista laptop, fine. Have failed 4 times to get it onto XP laptop despite reaching the stage of recognising the printer on the network and printing the test page, then freezing at 38% saying 'Hardware Problem' "The data is invalid"??? (it does install OK via USB, of course)
I have been through all the 'fixes' on HP website and same result.
Anyone any idea why it gets so close then dies on me? PLEASE.
    This question was solved.

Let's add the printer manually since it appears the software is already installed for your USB connection.
Verify that you can browse to the printer's internal web page by typing its IP address into a browser.
    1. Click "Start" button --> Printers and Faxes.
    2. Under Printer Tasks, click "Add Printer".
    3. Click "Next" button on the Add Printer Wizard window.
    4. Select "Local printer attached to this computer". Deselect "Automatically detect and install My Plug and play printer". Click "Next".
    5. Under Select a Printer Port option, select "Create a new port" and select "Standard TCP/IP Port" and click "Next" button.
    6. In the "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP printer port wizard" make sure that the printer is turned on and connected to same network that your computer is connected to. Click "Next" button.
    7. Under "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port" enter the printer's IP address. Click "Next" then click "Finish".
    8. Now, select HP from the list of manufacturers, select your printer from the list of Printer models and click 'Next' button.
    9. If you can't find your printer, you'll need to find the install CD and use the "Have Disk" option to select one of the hp*.ini files. Alternatively, you can select another HP printer model from the same type.
    10. Add the print spooler name and click "Next".
    11. Click "Next"
    12. Click "Next" and then "Finish"
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Wifi works on iPhone but not MacBook with more bars!

so, sitting in the same spot my MacBook Pro has 4/4 bars but the wifi only works for five seconds at a time (not literally but it feels like it), then I have to disconnect and reconnect. My iPhone has 2/3-3/3 bars and the wifi works great! why is this? Shouldn't the MacBook have better reception as its bigger/has more power? Why does it show more bars than the iPhone but hAbe a worse connection?

Start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, restart as usual and post the results.

  • Problem with WiFi on one netbook but not the other

I have a curious problem in that I am able to connect and browse via the wireless network on one netbook using the home hub no problem, but another netbook connects the wireless network but does not allow me to browse. Curiously it works no problem on ethernet. The netbook with the problem is running Windows 7 Home Pro with Microsoft Essentials as the AV protection. The netbook without the problem is running Windows XP Home Pro with AVG.
I have tried all sorts from rolling back Windows updates, reinstalling the wireless device drivers, refreshing/flushing dns and various command prompts but nothing seems to work.
I took the netbook away and tried connecting to another wireless network and it worked straight away no problem which leads me to believe it is a dns issue with the BT connection on my netbook.
I have enclosed the IPCONFIG for both the wireless and ethernet connection in case anyone can spot anything and make suggestions...

Wireless connections are classed as public by default, so file sharing and network discovery is disabled.
You have to change your wireless connection so that it is in the Private network classification.
I cannot remember how to do this, as its a while since I played around with a Win 7 or Vista laptop.
Any settings only affect the actual wireless connection you change, so if you access public wifi, then that will be classed as a public network, and file sharing will be disabled.
Ethernet connections are usually assumed private.
I am sure a Google search will tell you more, if its not in Windows help.

  • Why will my iphone 4 connect to wifi in the UK but not abroad?

    Hi,
I bought a UK unlocked iphone 4 from a colleague of my sister's after my 4s went for a swim. For some reason I can connect to wifi services in the UK but none where I live, in Spain.  I never had this problem with my 4s or the 3G that I had previously.
There is a UK sim card inserted in the phone, and it works fine as a phone apart from the wifi issue. The same issues occur even with another sim card installed or the phone in flight mode.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Have wifi signal, logged in but not connected to internet.

Will not connect to internet.  Worked fine last weekend at home and traveling.  No internet connection this week at a different home location.

Probably your router is not assigning your iPad a valid LAN IP address. You can check this in the network details accessed by touching the ">" to the right of your network name in WiFi. If the IP address starts with 169 then you didn't get an IP address from your router.
Sometimes this problem can be solved by restarting your router by removing power. Also use Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings on your iPad. Also check to see that you have the latest firmware on your router.

  • TS1559 i can turn on wifi via control centre but not via wifi menu (greyed out)as ive restored my phone i cant now enter my wifi password

wifi greyed out but can turn on via control centre but now cant entre wifi passwords as i restored my phone

I would try a restore, but more than likely this is hardware.
I would call apple, and i hope you're covered under warranty because it sounds like your wifi module is no good.

  • Airport Express: Wifi works for MacbookPro, but not iPad or iPhone? Defective device?

    Hi All,
Just got a brand new Airport express installed, and the wifi works perfectly fine with my macbook pro, but for some reason it does not work with my mobile devices.
My iPhone and iPad both work on other wifi networks. They are able to connect to the wireless network I set up, but there is not internet connectivity.
Do I have a defective device? Is there something else I can do to troubleshoot?
    Thanks in advanced

Hmmm, I doubt it's syncing cxausing it.

  • My Iphone 5c will pick up wifi in foreign countries but not email! Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

I can't access my email while in foreign countries although my Iphone 5c will access
wifi for all other applicatons. How do I fix this?Apple doesn't seem to have the answer>

My daughter's 4S did this after Apple replaced the back.
There's a clear piece of plastic in there was not seated correctly and the flash was popping back into the lens.
Apple store just took the back of and reset the piece where it's supposed to go. Took about 2 minutes.
Take it to an Apple store.

  • 3G can catch wifi in apple store but not anywhere else

So I upgraded my 3G to OS4.0 a few weeks ago and like many others have experienced, my wifi has gone DEAD right after the upgrade. No networks show up whatsoever. I have spent hours going through this forum and google, only to find out that there's no solution for it and some have even resorted to putting the phone in the freezer
I was just about to give up on the problem thinking it's a hardware issue, but today I happen to pass an apple store. I explained my problem to one of the Apple consultants and as soon as he touched it there was the wifi!!! He didn't understand why it didn't work at my dorm (on college campus) and told me to come back and try.
So here I am back at my dorm again with the same old problem - it can't find any wifi. This is getting really frustrating and I do hope I can find a solution for it. The fact that it worked at Apple Store shows that it's not a hardware issue, but what is it!!! It was able to find my campus network before I upgraded it, so I don't think it has anything to do with campus network having a weak signal. Arghhhh I hate apple. If anyone knows how to solve this please please let me know.

So I tried using my macbook pro to share internet to the iphone, and the phone can detect the network! I'm guessing my campus network and several hundred other networks around me are too far to be detected? But how close must you be for it to work!? it's unbelievable that I live right in the city where there are hundreds of wifi detected on my laptop but none on my iphone

  • Why is my Wifi dropping on iMac but not other Apple devices?

I am trying to figure out why my iMac constantly drops the Wifi connection.  My router is new and only a couple feet from my iMac.  My husband's macbook pro does not drop the Wifi connection.  Usually, the Wifi connection is lost for a matter of seconds or minutes and reconnects without me doing anything.  My Wifi works at lightning speed when it is connected but drops off several times a day and sometimes multiple times an hour.  This is so frustrating!

    WiFi Problems:
Wifi problems seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, sometimes any one of the following can help although, unfortunately, not always. In no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion and possibly Mavericks:
