10.10.3 scanning probs.

Since the 10.10.3 update (I'm assuming), I've had scanning problems. The main symptom is a hang during the scanning process: it tries to perform the initial scan of the page, but then hangs with "Overview Scan . . ." still displayed towards the bottom of the scan area. This happens with all 3 main Mac OS scanning front-end apps: Preview, Image Capture, & Printers & Scanners. So then I "reset printer system" on my MacBook Pro and "restore[d] faculty defaults" on the Officejet Pro. Still the hang. (It occasionally would work if the app somehow displayed its "factory" defaults?!—weird settings that I have never used, like 75 dpi / Tiff?! As if there were some problematic prefs file somewhere.) Oh, with the "reset printer system," I was also prompted to download/install HP Software (3.0)—which I'd deleted, following web advice, w/ Mac OS 10.9, so I could scan at all (via Preview, etc.). It worked once or twice with the HP stuff; but even then, I got these strange black & white horizontal stripes down the scan display, so that I could barely make out the text when selecting the final scan area. (Although the resulting scan was fine, when it worked.) But now it's back to hanging on "Overview Scan"—PLUS the zebra stripes! I don't know whether I should delete the HP software again or not. My main hope (or fear) is that 10.10.4 might have the required fix?

If you do not have the Hewlett-Packard folder in Applications then you most likely do not have HP Scan installed. So, we will not focus on that. Mac OS 10.10.3 has the scan image corruption fixes from Apple so that should not be the issue. The latest HP Components for Image Capture (ICA) are also part of the 3.0 driver update and have fixes as well. Lets focus on the ICA components first. You are correct in your path for the ICA plug ins. I miss typed the path. Apologies. Now we want to manually remove those device plug ins from \Library\Image Capture\Devices and place them in the trash. Then go to https://support.apple.com/kb/DL907 and manually download the 3.0 driver update if you have not already. Run the installer for the driver update. Then double check Library\Image Capture\Devices to mak esure HPSCanner and HP Scanner 3 were installed. Try Image Capture again. When I try to scan from printer to Android tablet it comes up Computer not Found. Install Printer Software.I have got HP Remote All in One app and eprint app installed. On my settings it shows the plug in app and the printer name and model. What else do I need to do to get this to scan from front panel of printer to tablet???
When you open the all in one app on tablet it will say scan on screen and then when you press it the printer will scan it to tablet but you cannot size it correctly (when you put A4 size in settings on tablet it still comes up too small to read. HELP me pls as I am quite new to all this. Thanks.

Firstly you can't scan from your printer to your tablet, you have to scan from your tablet. Please touch the "wheel" at the top right corner and change dpi to say around 200 and try again.

"Unable Able To Create File" error message and Disc Scan prob

Player is a 60GB zen Extra with 24.2GB free space and 5,680 files of MP3, WAV and WMA.
Unable to transfer any files from MediaSource to the player. Message is "Unable to create file, restart player..". I can, however, copy files off the player into MediaSource successfully. The player also plays O.K. Just can't copy any more files to it.
Attempts to resolve the problem have been to try to copy different files, try another computer, try another USB cable, do a Disc Scan, update the driver and O/S to the current versions. None of these have resolved the problem. I can, however, delete a file from the player and then copy that same file back to the player.
What is more perplexing is that the first two times I did a Disc Scan the player stopped at 97%. The player just cycled down and didn't complete the scan. I did a couple more disc scans and the player then froze at 95%. I tried a few more times and now the player freezes at 94%.
I have run the disc scan previously when the player has froze and the disc scan has always completed to 00% and resolved whatever the problem was at the time.
I am hesitant to format the disc and not be able to add anything back to the player. 5,680 files to play is better than 0.
Any clues? Oh, and I am out of warranty range as usual.

Thank You for the feedback. The problems appears to have surfaced after I transferred 350+ mp3 files in one session from the player to My PC Library in MediaSource. The player, however, did not seem particulary warm or have strange noises eminating from it during or after the transfer so I don't know if this is the cause of the problems or not. I was able to transfer mp3 files to the player sporadically after a few disc scans, reboots and rebuilds, but as noted in my initial post the problems have worsened.
Is a 350+ file transfer a bit too much for the player to handle in one session, or does this lend itself to the possibility of damaging (frying) part of the disc? If so, maybe a precautionary advise to other users contemplating large single session file transfers may be beneficial in preventing player damage and owner frustration.
I like my Nomad Zen Extra and if the disc is damaged I will purchase another in time. I am a bit bummed at the current state of the player. Guess I'll format the disc and hope for the best.

Problems since last update... default browser, scanning probs with Laserjet

This may be general, but I don't have a lot to go on. Also, two issues may or may not be related.
1) Since the last update, which included a firmware update, when I reboot my Mac my net apps (Adium, Firefox, etc) always get taken out of default, and I have to make them default again when I first load them. This is annoying... anyone know how to make this stop?
2) Not sure when this started to happen, so it may have been associated with the update, but my HP Laserjet 3055 will no longer scan documents. Printing, fax, etc., all work. Just can't scan anymore. In fact, in HP Director I can't even get the "Fax" button to activate (it's grayed out now).
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi, with regards to #2, I had the same problem after the latest update and the following cured it.
Use the HP uninstaller and delete all HP files, empty trash and restart. Then download and install all needed HP software/files and install. Restart and all should be ok.

Need to execute a sub-VI continuously, while others are executed on demand.

I'm running into a problem while trying to develop a set of controls for a scanning probe microscope. I have a PID control which governs the height of the probe above the sample (feedback input is through a PCI DAQ card), and which needs to run at all times. I also have a scan control which raster-scans the area of interest as defined in the input. Both of these programs work fine on their own. the problem I am encountering is: due to the nature of the position control equipment, these controls must be consolidated into a single VI (the "device handle" can only be called in one program at a time). The PID needs to execute constantly and in real time, while the scan needs to execute only on command. is there a relatively simple way to call a sub-VI such that it will run continuously at a high priority, while allowing another to be called on demand? Specifically, I need to avoid either sub-VI becoming caught in a "while" or "case" structure and refusing to allow the other to execute.

I suppose I should have included a bit more information in my original post.
I am running under windows XP, the PID updates once per millisecond via analog voltage reading, the instrument can queue commands but there's no current need to do so as the speed with which I need to issue commands is significantly below the USB polling rate.
also, the problem with execution in parallel is that while the VI's are effectively independent, they both need to receive the same device ID from the controlling DLL. Unfortunately, the device ID command can't be called separately in each VI due to hardware restrictions, which is the reason I was looking for some sort of background execution option.
I'm attaching the VI's themselves to make the situation a bit more clear as well.

ARD crashes Postgres on kickstart

A running, working version of Postgres listening on port 5432 crashes when ARD (agent) is 'kickstart'ed.
- Postgres version is 8.1.3.
- ARD version is 3.0.
- "kickstart" is run from the command line.
- OS X version is 10.4.7.
Sound familiar? Pointers, sympathy appreciated.

found a link to this thread on this site: Topic: ARD 2.2 is a mess... Scanner broken. It's a long one detailing the same problem.
If you go to the last three or so entries, you'll find a solution to the problem.
As far as I understand the scanning prob is caused by something going wrong with the DNS entry in the Network pane of the System Prefs. Scanning seems to rely on the entries here - probably it checks and uses the entries to guide its search.
Without an entry you'll get the crash problem. With an entry it doesn't like you'll also get same. Success was achieved by placing a bogus DNS entry in the DNS pane instead of the one the scanner didn't like.
I can only guess that if the scanner finds a completely inaccessible DNS in the pane it ignores the pane and continues without it. Perhaps with a certain kind of DNS entry - including no DNS entry - the scanner goes into an unrecoverable loop and the pin is pulled.
This could perhaps explain the Bad Address being noted as the cause for the crash in your Crash Log.

After Effects Render Farm CS5

I have just set up a mini rendering farm, well, basically my MacBook Pro is the master and my 8 core MacPro is 1 node. I have the CS5 Master Suite set up on both computers both up to date.
After finding some instructions on the Adobe help website, I set my MacPro to watch a folder called "AE Watch Folder" on my Netgear network HD, the MacPro and the Netgear are hard wired to a gigabit switch.
I tried 2 sequences at the same time using collect folders and it worked spot on, i could see the progress by using Apple Remote Desktop 3.3.
After deleting the folder on the network hd, i tried rendering all 8 sequences then i monitored the MacPro and seen it was searching for all the files, after waiting 5 mins it kept repeating the process reading the same files over and over again, so then i cancelled the watch selected watch folder again and then it started rendering? Basically got it working but with lots of fiddling.
All files rendered okay but was wondering if theres is a proper technique i should be carrying out when i do the same task again, which will be soon. I thought maybe because i was messing around binning files out of the watch folder on the network drive?
Also how will it work when i add another node to the network which is going to happen soon, does it divide the workload up? Also can you do the same process with Premiere Pro CS5 as i need to put all the rendered files in premiere and stitch them all together but i don't fancy waiting years for my MacBook Pro to render lol.
P.s all files were encoded using Quicktime Apple Intermidiate Codec.

OPTIMIZE SCANNED PDF PROBS Acrobat Pro 9

"Optimize Scanned PDF" option under DOCUMENT seems to do a great job, only problem is that it seems to take parts of the document and overlap itself. The source PDF is fine. But the result always have these overlaps.
The only way I can describe it is that after optimization it looks like when 2 pages feed in a fax or copier machine and you get part of one document over the other. This happens with single and multipage PDFs. Anybody know how to fix this??

Can't scan with Epson Stylus DX4450

I'm trying to configure my Epson Stylus DX4450. Printing works like a charm, but scanner is not. I tried to configure it as it was suggested on various websites. I've installed sane, xsane, iscan (from http://repo.archlinux.fr/i686) also I've downloaded iscan-plugin-cx4400 from Avasys website, extracted it with rpmextract ant put the library to /usr/lib/iscan.
When I try sane-find-scanner it shows:

When I try scanimage -L it's idle for about a minute and then it shows:

But when I try it again it shows:

Device usually turns off when I try xsane. Two times xsane launched, but Epson turned off right after it. It also turns off sometimes when I try sane-find-scanner second time or when I try to launch iscan.
I read that there can be a conflict between sane and gphoto, moved /etc/udev/rules/54-gphoto.rules and restarted udev - still didn't work.

Almost solved.
First I've copied files extracted from iscan-plugin-cx4400.rpm from /usr/lib/iscan to /usr/lib/sane. Didn't work.
Then I've checked version of iscan with yaourt and it appeared that aur have newer version than the one from archlinux.fr repo. I've built it, moved epkowa.conf.pacsave to epkowa.conf and it worked once.
sane-find-scanner output was the same, with language errors, but scanimage -L showed that it found my scanner (don't have the exact output - it was different than before). xsane still didn't found the device but I managed to preview and scan to file printer test page with iscan.
When I tried it for the second time, sane-find-scanner output was the same, but scanimage -L didn't recognised the scanner. iscan didn't work. Tried to restart the device - still the same.
Tried to turn off the scanner, restart udev, start scanner again. Didn't work.

[Solved] Banshee crashes while scanning USB Mass Storage mounted SGS2

I start banshee and then connect my Samsung Galaxy S2 as mass storage. It shows up in Banshee and Banshee starts to scan the folders for files, but at some point it suddenly crashes.
Any idea what is causing the problem here?
Systemd log and Banshee log is below.
EDIT: As it seems, this was a general error of the FS of the SD card. I had to format it, which is unfortunate, but it works again.

Hello, i too have random freeze without any "usable" info.
The blame "may" (well i think it is) be a "baytay + i915 kernel drivers" fault, these thread are intresting :

I did use the trik on a custom kernel, i do have freeze (none tomoroy but two today but only on using firefox, so may be another probleme (sna)) but not on video (well i had run 15 video same time, and two where running 2 hours after without crash). May be you should try it (i think it work better).

Strange Behaviour while scanning from Canon MP600r with 10.5.7

Dear all,
I am working with the Canon MP600r (wifi) and scanned without any probs in Tiger. In Leopard I could not scan until 10.5.5. came out. Again everything was fine. Now in 10.5.6 and 10.5.7 I have strange problems: I can use the preview, abut while scanning suddenly it says that there is no communication with the scanner...!!

Hello Bernhard,
Your issue sounds like there may be a problem with signal strength. I would open the Canon IJ Network Tool (which you can access via the Utility icon from the Printer Queue) and check the signal strength.
If the strength is okay then you could try scanning at a low resolution, such as 75dpi. If you usually scan at a higher resolution, then scanning at a lower resolution will make the scanned file smaller and if that works then you know you still have a network quality issue. What brand and model of wireless router do you have?

Ctrl+alt+delete annoying prob

hello,
i'm having a prob, it began about 2 mins. ago, i just puch ctrl+alt+delte to open the task manager, so i can see CPU usage etc... . All seemed just fine, then i just closed it and the next time i used this command (ctrl+alt+delete) i just can't get the task manager anymore. I just get a blank box with on top of it task en status, but that's all! i can't see CPU usage anymore, prestaton etc are alle no-go's :(, what happened ? i just closed it and re-opened it...weird

thx prob is solved just had to double-click on the window , also performed a virus-scan, but no viruses were found, i do use pc-cilin 2002 (up to date) i hope it's sufficient, because norton is way much better, i know, but i just don't want to spend any money on a damn anti-virus prog...just used the one that came with my mobo

The below query is doing full table scan. So many threads from application trigger this query and doing full table scan. Can you please tell me how to improve the performance of this query?
Env is 11.2.0.3 RAC (4 node). Unique index on VZ_ID, LOGGED_IN. The table row count is 2,501,103.

The values (VZ_ID) i have given are dummy values picked from the table. I dont get the actual values since the query is coming with bind variables. Please let me know your suggestion on this.

But I am not getting what is the issue..its a simple select query and index is there on one of the leading columns (VZ_ID --- PK). Explain plan says its using its using Index and it only select fraction of rows from the table. Then why it is doing FTS. For Optimizer, why its like a query doing FTS.
The rule-based optimizer would have picked the plan with the index. The cost-based optimizer, however, is picking the plan with the lowest cost. Apparently, the lowest cost plan is the one with the full table scan. And the optimizer isn't necessarily wrong about this.
Reading data from a table via index probes is only efficient when selecting a relatively small percentage of rows. For larger percentages, a full table scan is generally better.
Consider a simple example: a query that selects from a table with biographies for all people on the planet. Suppose you are interested in all people from a certain country.
select * from all_people where country='Vatican'
would only return only 800 rows (as Vatican is an extremely small country with population of just 800 people). For this case, obviously, using an index would be very efficient.
Now if we run this query:
select * from all_people where contry = 'India',
we'd be getting over a billion of rows. For this case, a full table scan would be several thousand times faster.
Now consider the third case:
select * from all_people where country = :b1
What plan should the optimizer choose? The value of :b1 bind variable is generally not known during the parse time, it will be passed by the user when the query is already parsed, during run-time.
In this case, one of two scenarios takes place: either the optimizer relies on some built-in default selectivities (basically, it takes a wild guess), or the optimizer postpones taking the final decision until the
first time the query is run, 'peeks' the value of the bind, and optimizes the query for this case.
In means, that if the first time the query is parsed, it was called with :b1 = 'India', a plan with a full table scan will be generated and cached for subsequent usage. And until the cursor is aged out of library cache
or invalidated for some reason, this will be the plan for this query.
If the first time it was called with :b1='Vatican', then an index-based plan will be picked.
Either way, bind peeking only gives good results if the subsequent usage of the query is the same kind as the first usage. I.e. in the first case it will be efficient, if the query would always be run for countries with big popultions.
And in the second case, if it's always run for countries with small populations.
This mechanism is called 'bind peeking' and it's one of the most common causes of performance problems. In 11g, there are more sophisticated mechanisms, such a cardinality feedback, but they don't always work as expected.
This mechanism is the most likely explanation for your issue. However, without proper diagnostic information we cannot be 100% sure.
