Hello.
I have a question about non-Apple SSD upgrade of MacBook Pro. I was planning to go and buy an SSD in a couple of days but I have coincidentally come up with a web page mentioning trim enabling to extend SSD life on MacBook Pros. Actually the article suggested that if trim is not enabled, the SSD performance degradation will start very quickly due to a high number of writing and deletion of data to the same location on the SSD. Apple's original SSDs are really expensive, I checked that. Is there anyone who upgraded with a non-Apple SSD and did not enable trim and realize the SSD performance degradation? Is there anyone who could easily enable trim and is using his Mac efficiently with a non-Apple SSD? I will be glad if you could share your experiences. I really want to improve the speed of my Mid 2012 13 inch MBP but I have to be sure before doing that. I am also planning to buy a Samsung Evo 840 250 GB SSD.

Yes you need to install and run TRIM Enabler after your OS X is installed or reverse cloned onto the GUID/OSX extended Journaled formatted SSD from a external boot clone drive of the previous internal drive.
Also you need to run it after some OS X updates and of course upgrades, you'll notice the immediate performance drop if you don't.
It's available over at MacUpdate.com, you'll have to right or control/alt key click to "Open" it to bypass OS X Gatekeeper.
Read these user tips, you can clone your present internal drive to the new SSD using a SATA to USB adapter/Carbon Copy Cloner (not Superduper) and then reboot and hold option/alt key down on a wired keyboard to boot from it and test before making hardware switch.

TRIM Support for AMD sb850

Hi all,
I've just bought an OCZ Octane 128GB SSD, formatted nad created an ext4 partition to host my root filesystem.
When I try to enable TRIM support for root filesystem (putting the discard in mount options) I get the following errors in dmesg
failed command: DATA SET MANAGEMENT
I've a Gigabyte GA-870A-UDE rev2 motherboard, the SSD is attached to one of the sata3 ports (managed by the SB850 Southbridge)
Any Ideas?

Technically, TRIM is not supported by Lion for non-Apple-branded SSDs, but there is a work around for this.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're using iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. The app that does not want to update was it originally downlaoded with a different ID? If so use that ID and hte password you set for it to update the app

I met same issue when try RDP to the VM vai administrator account
please try this:
open Remote desktop connection, click "show options", in experience page, my default setting is "detect connection quality ...", change to "LAN (10 Mbps..)"; after
that I can connect to VM again...

TRIM Support For SSD

How does Arch Linux handle SSD's? Does Arch Linux or the 3.0 kernel natively support TRIM or some equivalent garbage collection mechanism? Is TRIM or whatever it uses enabled by default during an installation of Arch Linux or must I enable this in some way? Just trying to understand if making the switch to SSD versus traditional spindle drives is smart using Arch Linux.

TRIM status on external, non-Apple SSD

I have a mid-2009 13" mbp that is currently running Mavericks. My logic board is in less than ideal health, and was no longer recognizing my internal SSD (OCZ Agility 2, 60GB) so I'm running it externally. After the update to Mavericks, I had to re-enable TRIM support with Trim Enabler 3.1.2. How do I determine if TRIM is enabled and working, as there’s no TRIM Status field under “Storage.” (I should also note that the Trim Enabler app says the patch is active, but can’t determine TRIM status.)

All F keys on the external (ansi I think, standard MS windows keyboard) do nothing when hooked up the the MBP.

Very neat. Nice simple GUI to enable TRIM on TRIM-supporting SSDs under Snow Leopard.

As for using hacked ktext, there can be trouble booting which you should know about first.
As a reminder, TRIM will keep the writing performances of you SSD high. without it, the writing performances decrease rapidly, most notably for the data transfer rate.
[Update] Some members had problem when rebooting the system.

Enabling (native) write support for NTFS

I used NTFS-3G for writing on NTFS before, but because of this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4187322) i had to uninstall it.
A while ago i heard something about OSX having native write support for NTFS.
Is that even true? And if so, can i (and how) enable it on Mountain Lion?

Allowing Shockwave Player to run for non-admins

Hi all, I see the following problem on and off for years now, with Adobe Flash and in particular Adobe Shockwave Player.
I have a school that has a Windows 7 lab. Shockwave Player 11.6 is installed as part of the base image. It shows up in "Programs and Features"
After it was initially installed, I tested the plug-in by going to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome and it worked fine.
The problem I'm having is with non-admin users. Our students aren't local admins. Say they go to a website that has Shockwave content, for example, http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/tryit/dna/index.html
When I (with a non-admin student account) click on the link to play the Shockwave content, a pop-up window appears. Then IE 9 displays a message "This webpage wants to run the following add-on: "Adobe Shockwave Player 11.6" from Adobe Systems Incorporated. Allow/Allow for all websites?" I don't want to see this again, so I click Allow for All websites. Then I get another window: "Adobe Shockwave Player is now installing....Installing compatibility components." So far, so good. The problem is, once the installation progress bar gets to the end, Windows User Access control pops up prompting for an admin user account and password to complete the install. Since they don't have an admin account, the install can't complete.
How do I get Shockwave Player to "just work" for non admin users? I see for Flash there is this document at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/987370 about registry permissions, etc. Is there a similar solution for Shockwave Player?

Trim support for SSD on Marvel controller?

I read somewhere that the 6Gbs Marvell 9128 ports do not support trim on an SSD. Is this true? I also heard that the RAID support for the Intel P67 ports are much more better than the Marvel Ports. This is what I am trying to do, and am wondering if it will work. I have an MSI P67A-GD65. I want to run Two WD Caviar Black 6Gbs (even though I know they achieve nowhere near that rate) on Sata ports 1 and 2 (the Intel P67 controller ports), in ports 3,4,5,6 (the Intel P67 3 Gbs ports) I would have 2 1TB storage drives, A Bluray drive, A DVD drive, and in the last ports 7 or 8 (the Marvell 9128) controller 6Gbs port) I wanted to have a Crucial C300 128Gb SSD drive as the boot drive. Would this work, or should I use port 7 and 8 for my RAID setup instead and use port 1 or 2 for the SSD? Any thoughts are appreciated. I love this mainboard and can't wait to get it up and running.

Not true. TRIM has nothing to do with the SATA controller, it is dependent on the drive itself, and your operating system.
