    Hi
Generally with printer problems, there are a few
    things you can do first.
    1. Download the latest printer driver and install
    it.
    This is available here:
    Dri
    ver for HP Deskjet D2300
    2. In Printer Setup utility, delete your printer.
Disconnect your Printer then reconnect it, switch it
    on.
In Printer Setup utility, choose Add printer
    3. After that, open Disk Utilities, found in
    Applications/Utilities, and run Repair
    Permissions.
    See how all that goes.

    ROAM -
Problem seemed to have disappeared, but tonight it came up again. (On SAFARI)
So, I went to your suggestion & tried it.
At Repair Permissions, got the message
"First aid failed" - "no package available"
    Problem keeps recurring!

  • "not responding" means what, exactly?

As we all know, Application Monitor (as well as the Force-Quit dialog, and I think other places) shows those nifty "(not responding)" suffixes highlghted in red when a process is working ovetime or simply hung.  I'm curious what triggers that, and how it can be captured from unix.
Here's what I think I know (from a lot of time spent on google and looking at man pages):
the 'not responding' cue means that the app is not reponding to system calls for roughly 2 seconds (with no explanation of what system calls are being tried or how they fail)
that Application Monitor mirrors the unix top utility (though there's nothing in top that correlates to 'not responding' - 'stuck' has a different meaning)
that nothing in the ps utility corresponds to 'not responding'
that this is one of those things that's going to drive me batty until I figure it out.
So what does 'not responding' in activity monitor *actually* mean, in unix terms?  I'm not looking for a way to kill processes (I know how to do that), and the obvious things like top's 'stuck' indicator are wrong, and not what I'm after.  I just want to know how I can leverage/mimic/replicate that 'not responding' thing that seems so simple in Application Monitor.  Where-oh-where in unix (or anywhere else) can this result be produced?
    DankeDankeDanke...

"Not Responding" is NOT a Unix concept.  Because if the process can be killed it is (Forced Quit), then it is still alive as far as Unix is concerned.
It is my guess that "Not Responding" means the application is not pulling items from its "Event Queue", so it will not see the "Quit" event, or any "Key Clicks", "Button Clicks", etc....
From a Unix perspective there are only 2 kinds of processes that cannot be killed.  Those that are already dead (Zombies), and a process that is stuck in the kernel, and the kernel code is not checking to see if any kill signals have been issued against the process.
A Zombie is a process "In Name Only", as all its resources have been released, and it just has a small process structure that is waiting for its parent process to collect the process' termination status.  A Zombie process CANNOT consume CPU time, it has not really memory to speak of, nor do any I/O.  If there are Zombie processes, they are generally the result of a program that was not paying attention and did not issue Unix 'wait()' calls to collect the status from an subprocess they created.  If the parent process exits without collecting their child process completion status, all the child processes get inherited by the Mac OS X /sbin/launchd process (PID 1) and /sbin/launchd will issue the wait() calls (on other Unix systems PID 1 is called 'init', but it provides the same orphaned child status collection services).  So to have a Zombie, the parent must still exist, but not care enough to collect the child process completion status.
The stuck in a kernel process is a full process that most likely has tripped over some kind of kernel bug.  It can consume CPU (its most likely talent),  tie up RAM, and cannot be killed via Force-Quit (kill -9, which cannot be ignored).  However, kill signals are delivered as a process is leaving kernel space and returning to user space.  So if a process is stuck in kernel space, and does not check to see if a signal has been delivered (the only way signals are honored in kernel code), and does not return to user space, then it cannot be killed.  However, this also signifies a bug in the kernel, as properly written kernel code should either quickly do its thing, and return, or if it needs to wait for something, check for signals and gracefully back-out.
If you have an unkillable process, the only way to cure that is to reboot.
A "Not Responding" app can generally be killed, so it neither a Zombie nor an unkillable Unix process.  Thus my conclusion that "Not Responding" is not a Unix concept, and why I suspect it is an application not checking its "Event Queue".
An Event Queue is a user mode GUI framework concept.  And has nothing to do with Unix, which is why there is no 'ps', no 'top', no anything Unixie that will report about "Not Responding".
I've been writing Unix kernel code since '95 for different Unix kernels, and I've been a Unix applications developer since '85.  "Not Responding" is a higher level abstraction that Apple has implemented, and I think it is related to their GUI frameworks and "Event Queues".  But it is all a guess based on knowing it is not Unix.

  • Menu Motion Content? means what in English..

Ok, so I'm minutes away from my first dvd and I'm so excited, but the dvd will not burn because I have " too much motion menu content" for what is allowed? What does this mean exactly, and what can I delete or shrink to make it all work? Could the size of the audio files, or image files be a part of this? Is it needed for me to shrink everything down in Photoshop BEFORE I start a project like this? Thanks

Could a large slideshow be doing this ?
Your error message said motion menu content so your problem isn't a slideshow.
What is the length of the video clips you have put in the menu windows for clips?

Re: your more recent post that got disappeared, Apple's service and parts channel operates on a very different basis to its supply channel. Supply builds to order and ships direct at the beginning of a product lifecycle to meet demand, and then as the production capacity has increased beyond demand, pre-builds inventory and ships through distribution and starts deviating parts supply to the service channel.
The service channel receives shipments of parts in batches, when the supply channel can spare them from production. Service then ships out parts as needed for repairs. Defects are usually proportionate to the age of the machine, so there is less need for spares at the beginning of a product life cycle, so service takes a low priority over production. The best thing to do with a mac that is dead on arrival is to return it and get a new one, since it will take ages to repair it. Apple then repairs, refurbishes and resells your old system, when service has capacity to do so.

Then I switched from Compose mode to Preview mode to check that it looked okay before posting. The image can be on any server including iDisk — you just have to use the correct path to the image. To post a thumbnail link to a _screen shot_ or other large image, go here:

...upload your screenshot and from the resulting page, copy & paste the *"HTML code for webpages"* into your post. • Always Connected Means What, Exactly?

I've heard the term "always connected" bandied about with respect to version 8 "Professional". What does that mean?

Sounds like marketing hype to me. I will take a guess that they are referring to the fact that it is web based and therefore can be accessed from most any internet connected device (smartphone/tablet/laptop/etc...).

  • "?" Logo in place of iTunes shortcut logo means what?

After experiencing problems with ipod nano (3rd gen)..recieved replacement which after iTunes finally recognized froze-up/crashed after loading library onto at the "safe to disconnect" phase.
I should add that before this my iTunes shortcut logo showed as iTunes(2)..now in place of that is a question mark logo...does this maybe mean I have unknowingly combined 2 iTunes libraries into one and causing ipod to crash?
Please help..as you all know there is nothing more frustrating than to be without your ipod... Also should add that iTunes works properly playing music..
Really appreciate any help anyone can give me....

First of all thanks for the reply...
Right,Everything started going wrong a few months ago when I downloaded latest iTunes and it wiped clean my Library..all my music and ipod registration. I found itunes folder on my hard drive and imported by adding the folder as I would add an album. I ended up with every song twice or three times in my iTunes. This scrubbing of my iTunes may be the same as if I'd uninstalled it,like you mentioned.
    Very strange.
One way to correct multiple copies is with iTunes, in the Advanced menu it has a "Consolidate Library..."
    CelticGlasgow wrote:
The ipod would crash or freeze when I tried to enter into the music categories with no consistency except the "cover flow" option,it would Always freeze if i went into that. The brand new ipod is crashing no matter what I enter into.
It starts normally but you can't navigate the menues? or it freezes when trying to play anything?
If it is the first problem then you have to reset the whole iPod.
The second problem usually is caused by corrupted music files or files in a format that the iPod can't really play.
    CelticGlasgow wrote:
And yes,the "?" logo (it still has the iTunes(2) under it) still takes me to iTunes ,which still plays fine and has all my purchased music on it...
That's also strange, if Windows shows the question mark it usually means that the program is not there. Only by editing the shortcut manually you can end with an icon that is not there, so the question mark shows (usually the icon is inside the executable, but you can change that manually).
BTW, you can rename the shortcut (right button menu) and take out the "(2)". You can also change the icon, or at least make the shortcut search for it again inside the iTunes executable; open the Properties (right button click, last item on the menu) and use the respective button.

  • Disk Utility Says System RAID Degraded - Does this mean what I think it is?

    Hi All
I have a Mirrored RAID Set for my System Drive - being two 931.5 GB Hitachi Drives. This Mirrored RAID Set I have called System RAID. If I click on the RAID Slice in the Disk Utility it says that the "System RAID" is Degraded, and under this [tabbed in] it says 931.2 GB - RAID Slice (disk0s2) Failed with the other under that saying 931.2 GB - RAID Slice (disk1s2) with no comment it has failed [obviously].
So if this essentially means my the first drive in my RAID set has failed then I will lose all data if the second fails also, is this correct?
So what should my next step be? Should I shut down the machine until I can purchase a spare drive to replace the currently damaged one? AND most importantly, HOW do I replace the drive and have it rebuild as the new second drive without erasing / losing data - IE what is the protocol now??
Please your immediate assistance is GREATLY APPRECIATED!
OH and AHH I've just seen in System Profiler that a 2 GB RAM chip appears to have failed
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4:
    Size: 2 GB
    Type: DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Speed: 800 MHz
    Status: ECC Errors
    ECC Correctable Errors: 1
    Manufacturer: 0x7F61
    Part Number: 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000
    Serial Number: 0x00000000
    What is going on!!

    Hi Kappy<
I am trying to migrate user data from a RAID - 1 slice from my old PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11 to my new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.4 by reading a mirror RAID slice from my old Mac that is mounted in an external drive enclosure and connected by FireWire.
The problem is that the new Mac cannot read the old Mac disk, it never shows up on the desktop, or comes up as available when trying to use Migration Assistant. Then, if I go into Disk Utility, the external RAID slice shows up briefly with a locked yellow padlock beside it, then I suddenly get the window shade of death, and have to hold down the power button to reset/restart my MacBook.
Why can my new computer not read my old computers disk, and how can I change permissions, or make the old drive readable by the new mac.
Regrettably I am away from the original Desktop, and cannot load the old drive back into it, connect the two machines and migrate that way. My only option for reaching my necessary data is to retrieve it off the drive I have with me.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Error 3002 after shift-update means what?

I've read that error 3002 is caused by Apple's firmware download servers being overloaded.  But if the user has already downloaded the proper iPad .IPSW file, and shift-clicks on Update in iTunes to start the update, what does an error 3002 mean then? Is the downloaded file incomplete or otherwise corrupt? Is there still some attempt at communication with Apple that is failing?
(in my case it's an iPad 2 wi-fi-only model, running iTunes in Windows 7. And on this same PC I was able to update the firmware on an iPod Touch 4G without manually downloading the IPSW file, so I don't think the problem is my hosts file, my router, or a security issue. I didn't download the IPSW file until after a normal 1-pass update failed.)
