10.2.0.4 on linux x64 oracle XE
Is there technical possibility to install 10.2.0.4 on XE edition ?
patch installer ask me for name and oracle_home, i try to set XE and /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server, but installer says:
The software can only be installed into existing Oracle Database 10g Oracle Home
Recomendation: Choose an existing Oracle Database 10g Oracle Home for installing this software.
P.S. I'm shure that /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server is correct path form my XE installation

New installation woes - SQLDeveloper on Oracle Linux x64 and Oracle 11g XE
Note that as an experienced Oracle developer in enterprise environments running MS Windows OS, I am familiar with SQLDeveloper for Windows. I don't have a lot of experience with Linux however. I don't find it intimidating, I just don't have a lot of accumulated knowledge.
I have recently been trying to set up a development environment on my Windows7 Professional x64 laptop.
1. Installed Oracle VBox
2. Installed Oracle Linux 5.2 inside the VBox (because Oracle 11g XE is not certified on 64 bit Windows, needed to go with a Linux OS)
3. Installed Oracle DB 11.2 XE
4. Installed JDK as instructed in the SQLDeveloper release notes for Linux x64
5. Installed SQLDeveloper 3.1.07.42-1
No apparent issues with any of the installations.
Problem : I can run SQL Plus from the command line, but when I click on the icon for SQLDeveloper, nothing happens. No error messages, nothing else.
Question #1 : Unsure how to debug/troubleshoot this. Will read through the installation and release notes for SQLDeveloper, but any suggestions would be welcome.
Question #2 : Could this be due to an issue with the JDK installation? It appeared to be successful (no obvious issues) but I can't see anything in the Oracle Linux menu system that tells me the JDK was installed successfully. How can I confirm that the JDK installation was successful?
Edited by: Peter Hartgerink on Jun 19, 2012 9:12 AM>
The Linux x64 version of SQLDeveloper doesn't come bundled with JDK. There is a version of JDK recommended, with an advisory to install it before installing SQLDeveloper. This I did, with apparent success. I guess I'll have to install the JDK again and check my Java versions afterwards. Thanks.
>
I don't know what JDK you downloaded since you didn't say. What version was it? Post the link.
I find it hard to believe that the JDK version recommended was 1.4.2 since that is an ANCIENT version of Java, you have to hunt to even find it for download and most importantly the sql developer main download page clearly announces what version of Java is needed.

Oracle SQL Developer 3.1 is shipped with JDK1.6.0_11. However, you can connect to and use any JDK 1.6.0_11 or above. To use an existing JDK, download the zip files listed below "with JDK already installed."
>
As you can see you need JDK 1.6.0_11 or above.
If the version you say was recommended was actually 1.4.2 then that is an error; post the details so the developers can get that error fixed.
I don't know what is on your system and can only go by the information you provide
>
4. Installed JDK as instructed in the SQLDeveloper release notes for Linux x64
java version "1.4.2"
>
You either downloaded version 1.4.2, which seems unlikely, or your Linux included 1.4.2 and it is being used when you try to launch sql developer.
Perhaps your system now has multiple versions of Java on it but the version being used by sql developer is the wrong one. If so that is the issue you need to resolve. -
Fail to download Oracle Linux x64
Hello.
I study exam guide for taking 1Z0-052 and I wanted to download Oracle Linux for Oracle 11g Enterprise edition installation. I received such an error:
Thank you for accessing Oracle E-Delivery. Due to your country location, we are unable to process your request. If you have an active support contract, you may request physical media by either submitting a Service Request or calling Customer Support. If you wish to purchase or evaluate our products on a 30-day trial please contact then appropriate Sales Representative for your country.
There are no problems with downloading Oracle 11g Enterprise, I mean my country (Azerbaijan) is not on a list of restrictive countries.
Could you help me please or suggest any alternative solution to my problem?
Kind regards,

It is the same question you asked in your other (active) thread:
https://community.oracle.com/thread/2621118
Multiple postings of an inquiry will only fragment information and it will quickly get lost.
As for how to get files?
You use a computer that has the proper outside access, then you copy the downloads to transportable media such as a CDR or DVD-R disk, then you move the files to the system where you eventually need them. -

X64 Oracle 11g R2 Install On i7 3770 Windows 7 x64 Enterprise System Fails
x64 Oracle 11gR2 installation on my new Windows 7 x64 Enterprise system fails after the "Desktop/Server Class" screen. I click Next, and then nothing happens. The install app closes and no installation logs are available. I checked the Windows logs and there is nothing obvious.
My new system has an Intel i7 3770 cpu with 32GB of ram. My old system had twin Intel Xeon EM64T cpus with 3GB of ram. Both systems ran Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. x64 Oracle 11gR2 installed and ran fine on the old system, but the old system started making "funny" noises and had to be replaced.
This is my personal system, not a commercial installation. I got Win 7 x64 Enterprise from my community college, which is a Microsoft Partner. I need Oracle for my relational database classes.
The story so far:
1. I downloaded win64_11gR2_database_1of2 and win64_11gR2_database_2of2 and unpacked both of them into a folder named win64_11gR2_database_install, replacing as necessary.
2. I set up a loopback adapter and added the following entry to c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts:
10.10.10.10 localhost PaulK-PC # Loopback Adapter for Oracle 11gR2 Install
3. After creating the loopback adapter, I restarted my PC. I can ping the adapter with no problems.
4. I ran c:\Users\PaulK\Downloads\Oracle\win64_11gR2_database_install\database\setup.exe as Administrator.
5. I skipped email notification, since I don't have a support agreement.
6. I select "Create and configure a database".
7. Whether I select Desktop Class or Server Class, when I click Next, the installation app dies.
Page 2-2 of Oracle Database Installation Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2) for Windows E24186-01 states that an x64 installation of Oracle requires an AMD64 or EM64T cpu. Does this mean I need to install the x86 version of Oracle 11gR2, or is there some other problem?
Suggestions?
Thanks.And Part II:

Does Oracle 8i for Linux include Oracle Enterprise Manager?
What's the version of the current Oracle 8i for Linux?
Enterprise Edition?

NO, it will not work. You cannot even install since the installer
for Solaris is a Solaris binary and some windows exe also does
not work. I guess somebody has to write a better bootstrap proggy
first...
I wonder why they did it that way...

Hardening Linux for Oracle 10g
I have been working on creating a bare-bones RHEL 5 installation which will act as an Oracle 10g database server. For hardening Linux, I have restricted to a bare minimum of packages to make it more secure. This installation did not have X-Windows, Gnome/KDE and a host of other services that will not be required on Production servers. I selected only the BASE installation which was further customized to include just the following (there is scope to trim this further, so feedback is welcome):
NetworkManager
readahead
smartmontools
yum-updatesd
irqbalance
acpid
crash
cryptsetup-luks
dos2unix
dump
finger
gnugpg
ksh
libaio
logwatch
m2crypto
man-pages
mdadm
nano
numactl
openssh-clients
openssh-servers
pam_ccreds
pam_krb5
pam_passwdqc
sendmail
setuptools
stunnel
sudo
symlinks
system-config-network
tree
unix2dos
unzip
vconfig
wget
which
yum
yum-rhn-plugin
yum-security
zip
Since I do not intend to use nfs, nis, samba – associated packages were not included. Further hardening was achieved by deleting non-required services (kudzu, avahi, gpm, atd, netfs, ip6tables).
The challenge comes when I begin setting up Oracle 10g using the oracle validated rpm method. In an attempt to resolve dependencies, YUM ends up installing 70 packages that do not apparently seem to have anything to do with an RDBMS (sound libraries, Gnome, X libraries and tools etc.). For me the libraries/binaries required for linking appear to be justified but the rest appear to be installed only for the Installer.
This package addition also ends up installing gamin which provides the gam_server which has bugs in it that lead to > 90% CPU consumption.
I further tried erasing some of the packages to see if anything broke. Till now nothing is broken and the database is running fine. Till now I have removed:
gamin
gamin-python
gnome-mount
gnome-vfs2
libbonoboui
libgnome
libgnomeui
oracle-validated
yum-updatesd
esound
hicolor-icon-theme
GConf2
gnome-keyring
gtk2
libglade2
libgnomecanvas
libnotify
libwnck
notification-daemon
audiofile
cups-libs
gnome-mime-data
cairo
pango
My questions:
• How have you created a production/hardened Linux based Oracle installation?
• Can you share your experiences in hardening Linux for Oracle and deploying the Oracle 10g RDBMS without installing the scores of packages which themselves might compromise the server?
• What exactly is the dependency for the Oracle 10g RDBMS on X11, Gnome, Gamin and graphic libraries such as Cairo and Pango (to name a few)?
• Which Linux system services are really mandatory for Oracle?
• Does a non-default secure installation compromise Oracle support?
The current memory footprint for this setup (without any workload) is (figures in MB):
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1010 458 552 0 19 377
-/+ buffers/cache: 61 949
Swap: 2047 0 2047
…of this 290 MB belongs to Oracle ☺
I will be working with the other route – without using the oracle-validated rpm.
Please let me have your feedback.

AniruddhaHi,
I'll paste the rpm -qa of a RHEL5 server I have installed through rpm -ivh (not yum at all)

I am installing Netweaver on Linux x64 but I dont it. Can you help me?
Hello.
I try install Netweaver WAS on Linux x64 according :
https://www.sdn.sap.com:443/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/webcontent/uuid/603afa05-d2a4-2a10-a0bf-c86743f37368 [original link is broken]
later when I have finished to download 7 packages and cat command apply, try mount iso file on linus file system . I burn a DVD too , but do not access to them. So what can I do bad ?
Thank a lot
RegardsHmm ..with so many large files SAP should at least provide the MD5SUM of each file so they can be checked once downloaded to confirm they are not corrupt before creating the image file!
When you are mounting the ISO image what command are you using ? Should be something like:
mount -t iso9660 iso.image /media/cdrom -o loop
If you are still having problems email the address at the bottom of the page you posted and ask them for the md5sum of each file.
Good luck.

Edited by: user11128035 on Sep 6, 2009 3:15 AMI don't understand your step 7 (the first step 7, actually).
What is that unixODBC-2.2.14-linux-x86-32.tar.gz, where did it come from, and why are you doing all that?
unixODBC should be installed after step 5.
I guess that that is the cause of your problem.
isql is not linked against readline at all on my RHEL 5 system.
Do you notice any improvement after removing the files from that tar.bz file?

Oracle in RHEL 5. Which one to learn first? Linux or Oracle?
My office uses Oracle Database in RHEL 5. Which one should I master first to be a qualified DBA? the Linux or Oracle? If the answer's Linux, where can I find Linux Tutorial for Dummies since I've never handled Linux in my life before. thanks
Both.
Best way to start is install a VM on your computer and download a Live distribution (Ubuntu, Fedora Core, etc...), install it. While you are playing around with linux in your VM, install oracle on your windows system and start playing around there. The only real difference you will encounter when playing around with the basics of oracle is the path reference to files. It may seem hard to get started but once have gotten to the point where you know enough to install oracle under linux (install apps via YUM or RPM, change configuration, install other daemons or services; IE: postfix, samba, smtp, etc) and know about creating users, creating tablespaces, creating tables/procedures/packages, altering system parameters, creating database links, etc...you will be on your way.
However becoming a DBA is not as simple as just knowing about Linux and Oracle. Since you have not indicated what you do know about this area I will assume a few things. First off when you start working as a DBA, you may not be just running Oracle on Linux, you may be running oracle on HP-UX, AIX, Linux, Solaris, Windows. Plus you will also be expected to know about writing quieries and optimizing queries. There is no magic settings that make databases run fast, you have to know about how they work, how queires are executed by the sql parser (this is where the real performance gains are).
One thing that I have been constantly expected to know (with detail) is oracle licensing. This is a nightmare, and it takes a while to learn about how all the licensing works so you can give advise for new projects that want to use certain technologies from oracle. This is very daunting at first, but as you learn about everything and become more comfortable about using and knowing all of this stuff it will become second nature to you. If you know DBA's (work colleagues or friends) talk to them, get them to show you, you will learn a lot more in less time than learning by yourself. -
32 Bit Installation or Oracle Linux and Oracle Database 10g
I have an old E-Machine that I wanted to put Oracle Linux and Oracle Database Express 11G on. I was just wanting to do some testing and development on the system. I'm pretty sure the machine is 32bit.
I just burned a copy of 32 bit Oracle Linux onto a CD. Is there a version of Oracle Database Express that will run on it?
It seems like there is only a 64 bit version of Oracle Express Database 11g. Is Oracle Database Express 10g installable on Oracle Linux 32 bit?
Let me know! Thanks in an advance. One (or two) caveats with the 10g version, XE can not be patched and the 10.2.0.1 XEs were created before the current daylight savings time rules went into effect.
If you have access to My Oracle Support there is a method to get updated timezone files for the oracle binaries, you need at least version 4 of the DST files. I've got the MOS docIDs somewhere let us know if needed and I'll dig 'em up. -
Linux 32位操作系统Oracle awr报错
配置了vlm
执行awrrpt.sql报错如下:

麻烦大师分析下,感谢!搞不懂
你为啥给出操作系统的位数 而不给出数据库的版本; 这背后是什么诡异的逻辑? -
Upgrading Oracle Linux with Oracle Unbreakable Linux Kernel
Hi all.
I'd like to upgrade an Oracle Linux OS with unbreakable linux kernel.
Current version is :
[oracle@union ~]$ uname -r

Which steps needs to be performed?.
I know i must be at 2.6.32. Also Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is available for x86-64 servers.
Q: How do i know if my distro is x86 or x86-64?

So i guess the installation is for 32bit.
Do i need to download a 64bit distro?.
