10.2.0.4 Patching failure question.

OS :- AIX 5L
DB :- 10.2.0.2
I was doing Patching from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.4.
Before doing any patching i always take tar backup of binaries.
While doing Patching at some 30% i got error as below
/oracle/SID/102_64/rdbms/demo/aqxml.sbs (invalid file system control data detected)
I tried searching all over but couldnt find much.
After this thinking that its part of demo folder i ignored it and went ahead but
it started giving same error to all files which it was trying to copy. and OUI gave only option to stop installation.
cause was that there was OS corruption introduced on /oracle/SID Filesystem.
SA tried to unmount the filesystem which was not happening because there was corruption and it was not allowing to write anything on /oracle/SID. We rebooted the system. ran fsck and mounted back the /oracle/SID.
After this i moved the original binaries folder and untar the binaries backup in /oracle/SID.
DB came up properly using untarred binaries no issues.
But question is now i see there is some 300mb difference between size of moved old binaries folder and new untarred folder.
Old one which was 30% patched is 300mb more than untarred folder.
If i had not taken tar backup of binaries would i be still able to use same old binaries??
I mean is OUI that much intelligent to not to touch original binaries until copying is done or
Does it restores old binaries if new Patching fails?
Hope i have put it in proper words!!!!!!

Hi,
Welcome 2 Oracle Forums :)
I mean is OUI that much intelligent to not to touch original binaries until copying is done or Does it restores old binaries if new Patching fails?
No i don't think so. It will copy all the files in the $ORACLE_HOME, better check the Installation logfile of patchset.
It is highly recommended to take full backup of Database and $ORACLE_HOME before performing any upgrade.

  • Patch fundamantal questions

Yesterday I have installed a latest CPU completely different way. During my six month career in oracle I always install a patch by simply double click on setup and afterward run upgrade assistant which update oracle version. But yesterday I have install patch completely different way. I have download patch the first thing to note there is no OUI setup. Patch readme file used Opatch utility to install patch. I have stated working according to readme file instruction but soon I came to know that Opatch utility not install on my machine than I installed Opatch and than patch but all these working raised my question in my mind plz help me to clarify the concept
What are the different type of patch exist
What is the difference b/w patch that change version or also have OUI setup and patch which install through Opatch utility.
Can we use GUL interface instead of Opatch utility
Why did not run upgrade assistant after Installtion of patch
Why this CPU did not change version of database
How we check either patch install successfully or not (Most important question)

Basically it boils down to the problem you still want everything delivered on a golden plate on your doorstep and still can't be bothered to read readily available documentation and go on abusing this Forum to abstract documentatiion you refuse to read.

  • OWB 10.2.0.2 patch - two questions

Hi, two quick questions that I haven't been able to get answers to:
    1. Does anyone know how far away the Solaris version of this patch is?
    2. I'm trying to figure out if I can use the 10.2.0.2 new client against a 10.2.0.1 repository. Don't see anything in the installation notes - does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks!
    Scott

    Hello :)
Don't know the answer tot he first one.
As for the secong one - this is the extract from the documentation available as 'read me' for the patch:
To upgrade from a 9.2.x or 10.1.0.x version, first download and install Warehouse builder 10.2.0.1 into a new ORACLE_HOME.
Apply the 10.2.0.2 patch over the 10.2.0.1 ORACLE_HOME as described in the next section.
After applying the 10.2.0.2 patch, migrate the design data, using MDL export, and migrate the runtime data. For instructions on migrating data, refer to an installation guide for Oracle Warehouse Builder 10g Release 2. You can follow the instructions either in the original Warehouse Builder 10.2 guide, which is part number B28224-02. Or you can follow the Warehouse Builder 10.2.0.2 guide, which is part number B28224-03.
    Upgrading from Warehouse Builder 10.2.0.1
sorry i couldn't paste the entire document but if you go to the page where the patch is and then go to READ ME (which also lists what was fixed in this patch):
Looks like you need to upgrade to R2 first.
    Hope this helps

  • Acrobat X Pro patch failure

Windows 7, CS6 with Acrobat X Pro.  I tried to install the recommended patch 10.1.6.  Installation failed, saying htat some other patch had been applied (sorry I can't be more specific).  Problem is that the failure took out my PDF writer!

The latest update is 10.1.7. You did not indicate which version you now have (Help>About Acrobat), what is it. Did you try the update from the Help>Updates menu or some other way. Do not generally use some link sent to you by e-mail (that is a good way to get a virus if you are not sure it is legit). You should generally install updates in order from the version you have. If you just downloaded 10.1.6 and have 10.0.0, then it will fail. The updates are not generally cummulative, but have to be installed in order.
What do you mean by PDF writer? PDF writer was last distributed as an option with AA5 and has not been distributed since, so I have no clue what you mean, though I have seen some aspect of a PDF writer is other settings. The default process for creating PDFs is to print to the Adobe PDF printer. Does that still exist? What way are you trying to create PDFs?

  • NLS patch failure and afterwards...?

Currently, System is running with R12.1.1 on RHEL 5.7
Patch 8576725 applied for language performance as pre-requisite, and 4 languages are merged to be applied.
Language license activated in OAM, and Maintain Multi-lingual Tables ran successfully.
Then while applying the NLS driver for merged languages, errors came with
    AutoPatch error:
Error copying source file to destination file.
    Source file is: /u01/patches/Language_Patches/target_merged_fi_sw_ru_lt/pa/forms/SF/PAXSUDRL.fmb
    Dest file is: /d01/oracle/stkmnfun/apps/apps_st/appl/au/12.0.0/forms/SF/PAXSUDRL.fmb
There are some more files with the same error.
Presumably, the error seemed caused by the lack of disk space as when I checked the disk space just several dozen of MB available at the mounted point...
Or can there be also any other reason for this?
If it is caused by the lack of disk space, then the question is
When the disk space extended, can I re-run autopatch to apply the merged patch?
What could be the right procedure for this after the disk space is extended...?
    Another question is;
If the problem is persistent even after disk space increase, is it ok just copy those form related files from the source to the destination?
Can anyone help me if somebody has tip for this?
    Thanks.

  • Ultrabeat Patches/Presets Question

I'm sure this will have been asked & probably answered before but i have done a search & found nothing on it.
    So I'll apologize now.
Ok Ultrabeat patches or Ultrabeat presets.
I know that Logic 8 already has an extensive library of presets for Ultrabeat but i have pretty much been through them & used them to death.
My question is this , Is there any way i could get hold of more Ultrabeat presets or even more patches for the step sequencer.
    Thank You

    Hi Sampeconstruct
Ive started down the programming them myself route to be honest i was being lazy
Not much response so i assumed the answer to my question was no
It was more the patterns to use in the sequencer i was after really

  • Recovery from failure question

In order to use two racks of servers (in our case located in separate buildings) and make sure that primary and backup (backup count 1) of each partition are allocated to nodes in different racks I have understood that there is a "machine id" that can be assigned to each node.
As far as I understand it the cluster will (when configured this way) survive failure of one rack (as long as no more failures occur before the other rack is online again), ie it will execute in a lower "safely mode". I have two questions about this:
         1. Lets say that one rack looses connection with the rest of the network long enough for the cluster to consider the other rack to be down. This will happen with both racks. What happens when the racks once again can communicate? Will they automatically sort out the "split brain" situation?
         2. Lets assume that one of the racks A is hit by a power spike that causes the switch and all the servers except one to rebooted. This will totally cut the failed rack off from the other rack while the switch re-boots and the nodes in rack B will consider all nodes in rack A to be down. After the switch is re-booted the nodes one still working server in rack A will be able to communicate with the nodes in rack B again. My question is then if Coherent in this situation will try to creating backups for all partitions of rack B in the nodes on the single available server in rack A? If this is the case the nodes in that server will most likely quickly run out of heap. What will happen in this situation? Will coherence retry - rebalancing when more nodes join the cluster or will the cluster crash?
         Best Regards
         Magnus

The second answer makes me a bit confused - two     > follow-up questions:
         >
         > 2A - If I use machine id 0 for N servers in rack A
         > and machine id 1 for N servers in rack B I had the
         > impression that primary and backup could NEVER end up
         > in the same rack (even after failures - ie the system
         > would run with only primaries if all nodes with say
         > machine id 1 went down) - is this not the way it
         > works?
Never is not exactly true. Only if it is theoretically possible to fit all the data in distinct nodes. But e.g. if you have two boxes, with the cluster nodes on one of the boxes not providing enough capacity to hold an entire copy of the data-set, the two copies still have to exist, then inevitably some of the duplicate data will end up on the nodes on the larger box, since they cannot fit into the smaller one. Also be aware that data distribution is done with the granularity of partitions. You cannot distribute a single partition to two nodes, so too uneven partitioning of the data-set can lead to problems.
         > 2B - My concern was that in the case of failures (or
         > as I stated my question during recovery from
         > failures) the number of physical servers (and
         > therefore nodes!) with machine id say zero and one
         > may be different (it seems quite hard to make sure
         > that this cant happen!) and in this case (say for
         > instance that only one out of N servers with machine
         > id zero comes up immediately, the other N - 1 comes
         > up much later because they were forced to do a disk
         > check or required operator intervention to start
         > after a failure) the memory of the single server
         > (heap space of its nodes) will not be enough to
         > accommodate backups for all the primaries on all the
         > N servers with the other machine id.
         >
While and immediately after you are losing nodes (when their death is detected) partition backups will be attempted to be promoted to primary copies. This might cause OutOfMemoryErrors in those nodes. I do not know if Coherence is able to recover from that (theoretically it should be possible to drop the newly created object references to get back to the state before the attempt to promote the partition backup to a primary partition).
So during nodes dying you can either temporarily or permanently lose access to data for which primaries were on boxes which died and the reconstruction from the backup caused OutOfMemoryError. If the Coherence JVM is not able to recover from that OutOfMemoryError then you might lose other primaries which reside on this cluster node and have a ripple effect because of this.
You can reduce the risk of such events by having more than two racks if multiple nodes in racks can fail together, and also sizing the cluster JVMs to have lower memory utilization due to cached data. This way a rack failure will cause for one less primaries lost and for two, more free memory to reconstruct data in. You can read the Production Checklist for some information on sizing the cluster.
Whatever happens, I don't expect that you will lose data due to OutOfMemory errors when you do not lose a cluster node. So after that blackout on one of the racks, and after the cluster reached a quiescent state as far as redistribution of partitions is concerned, you will not lose data just because you added back a node (I expect a copy of a backup is not dropped before the safe reception of the backup at the transfer destination is acknowledged).
If there are not enough cluster nodes running on one of the racks to accommodate the entire data-set, your data will not be balanced in a way that copies of the same data are fully on different, but they will still reside on separate cluster nodes. When more nodes are started then gradually they will be rebalanced to hold more data on separate racks.
         Best regards,
         Robert

  • Patch-upgrade questions

I have been asked to get our phone servers all up to date with the latest OS patches (service releases) and have a question that i cannot seem to find an answer to. Our phone system consists of 4 servers (Cisco 78XX MCS) 2 of which are our Call Manager publisher and subscriber and the other 2 are our CRS servers (IPCC Express). The difference is that 2 of them are 7825's and 2 of them are 7845's but they are both running the same OS (OS image, OS Service release, OS upgrade). I was looking at the available service releases on Cisco's site 'http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/callmgr-41' but it looks like those are specific to CCM so I just need to know if I can download those patches and apply them to both the CCM and CRS servers or is here another link that shows the downloads for the CRS servers operating system? I would think that it would be the same but I just wanted to check with the folks around here as I don't think that would merit a TAC case. If anybody knows if I can use the same patches and what not on both the CCM and CRS servers I wouls appreciate it.

    Hi Matt,
Great question! The page you were looking at is for SR's and patches for the Callmanager 4.1 Train specifically and would not be loaded on the IPCC servers.
    For OS Versions, they generally are the same on both. Here is a clip from the ReadMe for 2000.4.5a. These are always highly recommended reading to verify the required pre-load etc;

  • Bursting patch - ebs - questions

    Hello all,
We will be implementing the bursting patch - 5968876 - this week on our environment.
    xmlp - 5.6.3
    ebs 11.5.10 cu2
I have a few questions that hopefully someone could answer.
    1) Is there any good documentation on this process , with the new patch in place,
other than the readme in the patch files ?
    2) Now that we upload a control file, will that automatically set off the bursting process,
or do we have to make a specific call for the XDOBURSTREP program to run ?
    3) is CUPS a mandatory install on our server ( HP-UX 11.11) for this process ?
    4) I have seen that people mention they call bursting process from an after report trigger
in a report. What if we are not using a report ? how would / could this call be made
    then?
    thanks much in advance
    cheers...
    James

I didn't get a response but I have seen a bursting control file example that uses cc so am guessing that bcc can be used.
As for the exception, I implemented a summary report that is burst to file. This always gets generated so I don't get the exception. I believe that Is what the other thread, I was looking for, did but was not able to confirm that.
    Cheers,
    Dave

  • Creating automatic failure questions in Captivate 5

Is there a way to create questions that when a user answers incorrectly they automatically fail and end the quiz?  I’m using Captivate 5 and have been creating assessments through the question pool manager.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
The easiest way would be to give those questions a high score, and set the Pass score in such a way that they cannot Pass if they failed one of those questions.
But perhaps you want to throw them out after such an incorrect answer, and not allow them to continue? In that case you could use the Failure action to navigate to the score slide immediately?

  • T61 External Monitor Port Failure Question

I have a Lenovo T61 8897-cto (purchased 4/2008) with what I believe is a failing backlight.  In dim environments I can still see the screen.  I've  been temporarily using an external monitor, but the external monitor just went blank and I can't get it back, (the external monitor works fine with another laptop which I'm using now).  My question is, does this new fault point to a system board failure?   I suppose it could be a connector but I don't move the system often and not recently.  The only other things that comes to mind is that the battery is dying and only has 50% of its capacity left, (but I always run it with the AC cable plugged in).
I'm just wonder if it is worth putting any money into this laptop or to parts it out.  I've already ordered a replacement W510 which I should get in under 2 weeks. I was thinking about using the T61 as a backup or dedicated to Ubuntu, but I can buy a used one for under $600 so I don't want to dump $400 into to have it repaired.
Any suggestions/prior experience with failing LCD displays and external video port?

1400x1050 is the highest screen resolution, so I guess that is SXGA+ No, I've never spilled anything on the laptop. I'm running Windows Vista Pro latest Service Pack. I rebooted the system this morning and the external display was detected and used during the boot process. It started to work again under Windows. I'm starting to think that it was some sort of power saving mode that failed to re-initialize. The main laptop screen is still dim, but readable in a dark room. It does have a bit of a tint to it, which I've read is an indicator of a failing backlight. I've checked the warranty on the Lenovo website and they've indicated that it has expired.

  • Extended RAC failure question

    Hi gurus.
I have a question about this kind of environment.
In a Extended RAC scenario, with host-based mirroring (active/active storage with ASM) and a third site to mantain the voting disk, What will happen in a communication failure between the two sites (DWDM failure)?
This failure could be a problem? The Oracle RAC will survive?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
In a Extended RAC scenario, with host-based mirroring (active/active storage with ASM) and a third site to mantain the voting disk, What will happen in a communication failure between the two sites (DWDM failure)?
This failure could be a problem? The Oracle RAC will survive? This questions you must not get here ... you must get these answers by testing their environment.
Extended clusters need additional destructive testing, covering:
    ** Site failure*
    ** Communication failure*
But..... If DWDM fails the split-brain scenario should happen. You should search about "Oracle RAC Cluster Fencing ( For your specific release)" to understand the symptoms caused by split-brain scenario.

  • CPU Patch related question

    Hi all,
We are using Oracle 9.2.0.6 on RHEL4 64 bit
What is the use of CPU patch.Ealier we are using Sun Solaris server but after migrating to rhel, we are getting problem in one of the applicaion module.
but i don't know whether we are haing any cpu patch applied on the sun server.
and which patch should i applied for oracle 9.2.0.6 and how to apply it.
Does the steps to apply the CPU patch is same as it is applying the patchset of 9.2.0.6.
    Please suggest me.

As CPU's are security patches (which you can get from Metalink), did you even consider visiting Metalink?
    You would have found
    https://metalink2.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/f?p=130:10:5691407109246679955::::ALLTEXT,ANYTEXT,EXCTEXT,NONTEXT,KNOWLEDGE,PRODUCT_ID,PLATFORM_ID,SS,ST,NUMHITS,FILTCRIT,FILTCRITVAL:CPU,,,,TRUE,,,0,DR,100,2,Support.CriticalPatchUpdates
Metalink answers all questions on CPU.
You should use available resources, as per the Forums Etiquette post, PRIOR to asking them here, forcing volunteers to summarize or abstract information which IS already on your doorstep.
And you would have noticed you need 9.2.0.8 to apply CPU's.
I also suggest you only ask questions after you have done some research. You shouldn't ask questions like this, and they don't deserve an answer. You can find the answer yourself with little effort.
You seem to think the only thing you need to know to work as a DBA is how to use this forum to ask all of your doc questions. You won't get far this way.

  • Many Patch/Upgrade Questions/Processes for SAP Systems

Hello, I am trying to wrap my head around the patching/update process in SAP.  I am familiar with how to use SPAM and SAINT, but my questions are more about the process as a whole.  Here are some of my concerns:
    - Do you update the OS or SAP first?
    - Do you just apply only OS Service Packs or do you do all security patches as well?
    - Should kernel updates be done before or after database patches?
    - How do I update the kernel on a cluster?
    - Should you go to the latest database patches available or go to a certain level?
    - Are some areas more “important” to update then others?
    - How are all of our customizations (1000+ in ERP) handled by the patches?
    - What if we implemented an OSS Note that is fixed in a support patch?
    - How do we test to ensure we are not doing damage?
    - Can you “uninstall” security patches?
    - Is there a way to know what t-codes are affected by the updates?
Just for reference, we are running an ECC 6.0 system on Windows 2003 x64 servers, with a MS SQL 2005 db.  Our Prod environment is running in high-availability via MS clustering services.  Your input on these questions is appreciated.

  • Patch update question (didn't think it is this complicated)

    Hi,
I just started looking into weblogic server maintenance. New critical patch just went out.
We currently have adf 11.1.1.4 on weblogic 10.3.4 (yes i know we are due for an upgrade) with jrockit-jre1.6.0_26-R28.1.4 on production server.
New new patch came out for Jrockit R28.2.4 and earlier version.
Can anybody suggest me a path to apply the patch? Meaning, on staging server they just install this new Jrockit version (on top of the current installation) and see how current application behaves and if everything looks good, they install on production?
Also, the patch note doesn't say anything about if it is supported for welogic 10.3.4 or not. I believe, certification requirement are not updated as of now for this new patch. Any suggestion you guys have for me look into before going ahead and test this patch on staging server?
pls let me know if you need any further information.
    Thank you

As you have a support contract this is a perfect question for support. I doubt that we can help you out here.
