10.2.8 locks up during network file sharing

Hi all,
I am running 10.2.8 on a beige G3 with an Apple 100-T ethernet card. I am trying to copy files from one mac to another using file sharing. The destination mac is running 10.3.9. From the destination mac, I connect to the source mac. I select a set of files on the source mac, about 3 GB, and drag it to the folder on the destination. It works for about a minute, then the source mac locks up. The display goes blank and the monitor goes to sleep. Reboot is the only thing that brings it back.
In /Library/Logs/AppleFileService/AppleFileServiceError.log I find:
!!Log File Created On: 1/28/2006 2:13:23 27:6:0 GMT
28/Jan/2006:02:13:23 -0600: Server shut down.
28/Jan/2006:13:59:48 -0600: AppleTalk Listener closed because of ATalk error
28/Jan/2006:14:47:24 -0600: Appletalk service couldn't be enabled.
Seems like about the right time of day, but it doesn't tell me anything that would help solve the problem.
Thanks,
Scott

Update - Here's what I've tried so far, none of which has had any effect:
- Turned off AppleTalk since it is off on another 10.2.8 system that does work.
- Tried both ethernet ports: 100-T PCI and 10-T built-in.
- Tried different port on Linksys router.
- Tried installing 10.2.8 combo again (already running 10.2.8)
- Tried ssh from another mac to verify that it really is crashing - it is.
The most I get to copy is about 400 MB, frequently much less. I doubt that it fails on the same file each time, but I haven't been paying that close attention.

  • Network file sharing in Lion

I have some folders shared in Mac OS that was easily available to my other computers in network and guest OSs installed on virtual machine on Mac OS host but since I've upgraded to Lion sharing stoped to work "normally". I still can see my mac machine in network group but it no longer allow to connect as a "Guest", so I can only explore my shared folders having entered my Mac OS user login and password but doing that I get an access not only to shared folders but to the entire mac drive and all subfolders... How can I fix that and is it possible to use network file sharing in Lion as it was in SL and previously?

    Hi Prashanth,
There are multiple ways to move content from fileShares to SharePoint.
Step 1: Create the SharePoint Information Architecture - create a site collection preferably chose a document center template, create document libraries and folders as per the network folder structure in your organization.
Step 2: Map your File Share as Network drive in your client machine, and same way map your SharePoint website document library as network drive too. Drag and drop files.
Note there are 2 issues for this approach,
    1) your document metadata will be lost, the last modified by will change to the account with which you have logged into SharePoint while copying, and the last modified time will be changed.
    2) Its a tedious manual approach if you have lots of files.
Now for retaining the metadata you will need to depend upon a 3rd party tools ( or this codeplex solution: http://f2sp.codeplex.com/ (I havent verified that this works with Sp 2013 or not).
Using 3rd party tools has the advantage of retaining metadata and any issues with file naming conventions will also be taken care of most of the prominent tools which otherwise needs to be taken care by administrator manually. - Note SharePoint has file
    naming conventions - https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/905231?wa=wsignin1.0.
Also In order to reduce the effort in second step you can also create content organizer rules and map your drop off library as the drag and drop location.
finally do read this awesome blog post by Sean Earp and Andre Kieft before starting of with the project. http://blogs.technet.com/b/ptsblog/archive/2013/11/04/migrating-file-shares-to-sharepoint-online.aspx

  • E4200 Slow Wireless download and Network File Sharing

When I first got the E4200 up and running I was able to transfer files from my wireless laptop to a wired laptop at speeds of over 2 MBps(distance was over 40 ft).  Now I have both laptops running wireless and a desktop that is wired via ethernet to the 4200 router and network file sharing runs much slower.  Right now network transfer speeds are around 500-550 kBps.
Wireless network speeds are being affected also.  Wi-fi d/l speeds via Cisco speed test is usually 5-6x slower than my wired speed tests, with upload speeds being faster than the d/l speed(Laptop is only 2 feet away from router for testing).  And sometimes the wireless d/l speeds will slow down all the way to .15 mbps.
Has anyone come across this problem and found a fix for it, or have some suggestions?  The router settings are mostly default and I have reset it to factory defaults via web interface and tried power cycling.  But nothing so far has worked.  I would hate to have to return this router and go back to the wrt54g.

Ok, well I tried all these and changing the MTU down to 1365 made it run real slow, so I found out the optimal mtu and switched between auto and manual 1500, and auto gave me more consistent speeds.  It does seem to be running a bit faster with the name change of the 5 ghz band, and changing the channel of the 2.4 ghz band(Name changing 2.4 band did not make any noticable differences).
Right now I am getting download speeds around 10 mbps on the vista laptop(wireless), while the windows 7 desktop(wired) and laptop(wireless) are usually around 5.3-6 mbps.  File sharing between the windows 7 machines are 4.3 MBps and 2.9 MBps between vista laptop and W7 desktop.  Upload speeds on all machines are around 7mbps.
I am happier with the more consistent speeds between all machines instead of really fast between just 2, but am confused to why the vista laptop is running faster and my upload speed is faster than the download speeds on 2 of my machines.

  • Windows 7 and Mac 10.5 network file sharing

I am having extreme difficulties sharing files over my home network! I have 3 PCs and one Mac. I have tried the Mac forums and the Windows forums, to no avail.
    On the Mac side:
File Sharing is ON, with smb
Users are set to Everyone with read/write privileges
WINS has the correct Workgroup name
Network Name has no spaces in it
Shared my Desktop, Public Folder, Documents, and Shared folders (just to cover root folders and specific ones too)
Mac gives an smb://xxx.xxx.x.x address and a local network accession "mycomputername.local," but I don't know what to do with either of these things. When I put the addresses into the Windows Run dialogue box or in Internet Explorer, they don't seem to recognize the path.
Firewall is set to Allow All Incoming Connections
Under the Shared location in Finder, I can see my router name, and if I click on it, I can connect. No password is required. I am connected as my account name. However, I can't see the PC or anything at all, in fact.
Under the Shared location in Finder, I can see my shared name for my Mac. But I cannot connect to it, probably because I'm connecting from my Mac.
It would be nice to use the smb://DNSname/sharename or the smb://IPaddress/sharename function in the Go to Server window, but I have no idea where to find this information on my PC. Or on the network. Or whatever this is referring to.
    On the PC:
Sharing is NOT password protected under Advanced Sharing Options
I am sharing my Desktop and My Documents with Everyone and Guest, and Windows 7 has provided a file://computername/Users/foldername path. However, when I put this into the Connect to Server or Connect to File window, there is an error.
I can click on my Mac computer name in the Network window, but I get the error message that it cannot connect (network path cannot be found, using \\MYMACNAME as the path). This is when my Mac says it is "connected" when I click on the router in Finder's Shared places.
Of course both the Mac and the PC have full connectivity to the same network.
Also, I have disabled the internal firewall in the Belkin router.
Also, my accounts have identical names with no spaces.
My Mac (10.5) DID successfully connect to Windows XP before I upgraded.
    Any advice? Thanks guys!!
P.S. -- I have also posted to the Windows people here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/b5144e55-d024- 401c-85ae-1cf94226b786
In the hopes that I will double my chances of getting an answer.

    And my response:
Okay, so here's what I've done:
OS X: did the sharing thing, smb thing, and directories thing.
Win 7: Network sharing settings are correct for Home or Work (current profile). I left my Public alone, but verified that my network is recognized as a Home location.
User accounts exist in both the Mac and PC. Names are the same. Heck, passwords match and I'm logged into the same account on each computer, just in case.
Firewalls are scary to me, so I did the best I could. I went to my browser, typed in my router IP address, and went to the DHCP Client List. Both of the computers were listed with their assigned IP addresses. I "reserved" those IP addresses so they the router would always assign that IP address to that MAC address (so I could count on it in the future). It turns out that they are sequentially assigned, so I figured that if I added any more devices (my other PC, the PS3, etc.) those IP addresses would just be +1 to the last digit cluster in the IP address.
Then I went to Windows Firewall, because I don't have a third-party firewall. I confirmed that I was connected to the Home network, and then clicked Advanced Settings. Wow, there's a lot of rules! There were multiple File and Printer Sharing rules (both inbound and outbound), so I didn't mess with them. Instead, I created a Custom Rule (bot inbound and outbound) for all programs, any protocols and all ports, and added the IP address range (192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.9, giving myself plenty of extra for future devices) I found from above to the local and remote IP Address boxes. I specified to Allow the Connection for Domain, Public and Private, and gave it a name that started with A so I could find it easily in the future. Finally, I set the Interface Type to be LAN and Wireless (my PC is wirelessly connected).
In OS X, in the Firewall tab of the Security preference, I set it to Allow all incoming connections. File Sharing (SMB) is the first name on the list, but I cannot click on it or modify it in any way. I don't know what else to do. Am I missing something?
I've shared My Music and Desktop on the Win 7 for Everyone (not just the Homegroup!), and shared My Documents and Desktop for Everyone to read/write on the Mac.
Okay, now I need to reboot on both computers. brb...
Wow, definitely don't reserve any IP addresses on your router! I took that setting off, restarted everything, reset the modem and router, and I can now connect both computers to the internet.
I can still connect to the Windows via the Connect to Server dialogue and smb://AJPC.
In Windows Network, I can now see my Mac user account name, but when double-clicking on it I get the error message "Windows cannot access \\ComputerName. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose." Under "Details," it says Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found." When I diagnose, Troubleshooting can't identify the problem.
Any advice? Thanks for your help guys!
A side note: I just checked my router's DHCP client list, and my PC is now connecting at 192.168.2.8, which is definitely not sequential. Good thing I specified the IP Address range all the way to 192.168.2.9 just in case; apparently the router can't count.

  • Networking ~ File Sharing With Windows Vista

Alright, I've browsed enough of the web and I've tried a lot to try and resolve this issue, but none of it has worked at all for me. Here's my scenario about as specific as it gets:
I have a home private network consisting of two Windows Vista PCs, a HP Photosmart Printer, a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.1, and an iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4. The network is routed through a Medialink MWN-WAPR300N router connected to a Time Warner Cable modem which goes to the Internet. My primary PC, the MacBook Pro, and the iPhone 5 all connect wirelessly; the other PC and printer connects via Ethernet. All devices connect to the Internet flawlessly, and they are all assigned a static LAN IP address through the router because I portforward to one of my PCs, and the router requires it. The network was originally configured using one of the PCs as a Private network under the default workgroup, "WORKGROUP". Everything else router-specific is automatic.
Here's the problem: My MacBook and my primary PC do not communicate over the network at all. Both the MacBook and my primary PC can file share with the other PC connected via Ethernet, and they can both print just fine. After using LAN Scan v1.02 by Nutec Apps, LLC on my iPhone however, neither my primary PC nor the MacBook Pro shows up on the list of LAN devices. But that's not all, the MacBook Pro always recognizes the other PC via Ethernet in Finder, and the MacBook Pro can be found in both PC's Network list. However, when I try to connect to it via my primary PC, it says that "[My MacBook] is not a valid host name." What?
To futher satisfy my curious mind, I set up a small Peer-to-Peer network between my primary PC and the MacBook Pro via Ethernet. Both devices instantly recognized each other and connected without any issues. I was able to transfer files at approximately 100mb/s and I was stoked. I then disconnected and tried to transfer over the network again, and there was nothing there. I have even done ping tests over the network to the MacBook Pro's LAN IP address, and it came back with no response.
I've restarted both computers numerous times, played around with file sharing settings, set appropriate sharing permissions, disabled firewalls, enabled sharing for Windows on the MacBook Pro, enabled file sharing on the Windows PC, you name it. I'm sure there is a small fix that I may have overlooked, but I cannot figure out what the problem is for the life of me. Because the operation worked via Ethernet, and it's working wireless-to-Ethernet, but not wireless-to-wireless, I have a feeling that the problem is related to one or both of the wireless configurations.
Thanks in advance for any help provided, if there is anything I missed I will be happy to proivde more details per request. This issues has been bugging me for weeks now and it's time I seeked professional help

The section in question is where it says bridge100 because the IP address listed under that section reads 192.168.2.1, as previously suggested. However another IP address is listed above it as 192.168.1.104, which is exactly what it should be as I have it assigned via DHCP in the router. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because this is driving me crazy.
PS: I apologize for the confusion. I made a typo in my previous post about my MacBook's LAN IP address. It should be 192.168.1.104, not 103. I can confirm that it is listed as *.104 in my router and it shows *.104 on the above ifconfig. Please ignore the *.103, thanks

  • Network File sharing in SharePoint 2013 portal

    Hi Everyone
I have a set of network folders(shared folder in some server) and want to make use of all this in SharePOint as a portal. So that i can eliminate the use of Network folder sharing concept. Bacially i need to know whether we have any OOB template/s available
in SharePoint 2013 or its a custom development ?

  • Two Macs Networked, file sharing not working correctly

Okay, I've had a Mac Pro since February this year and it has been connected to a new iMac since about two days ago. Both computers can see each other on the ethernet network (their respective icons appear in the Finder sidebar). However, something weird is happening because not only are the correct "iMac" and "Mac Pro" icons showing, but also Windows "blue screen of death" icons are appearing also! These icons are named "mac001ffXXXXXXX" where XXXXXXX are a bunch of numbers. I can access the other computer's files by clicking on EITHER the official Mac icons in the sidebar, OR by clicking on the "blue screen of death" icons.
It should be noted that a Windows XP computer is also a part of this network. I currently have only the AFP sharing option selected (I did have both AFP and SMB, but I disabled SMB because Windows sharing is not really needed), but still the old Windows icon is appearing alongside the iMac icon -- both icons applicable to the iMac.
I believe this problem is connected to the file sharing issue I am having. While folders I have shared on the iMac can be seen by the Mac Pro, files on the Mac Pro for which I have specified Read and Write guest access to "Everyone" are not visible on the iMac -- the only way to access these files is to log in as a Registered User. I have tried a whole bunch of different things, but nothing seems to work. I was under the impression that communication between two Macs would be completely problem-free!
So is there something I am missing, or is it a Leopard issue?

A simple possibility is that you just don't have also have "Personal File Sharing" turned on for the Macs.
Otherwise, I bet it's on the PC end. Under windows filesharing (SMB), one machine will take control as the server. When there is a PC on the net, the Macs will generally cede that responsibility to the PC Try watching for that in the console log: take all the CPUs off the net, bring a Mac on, then the PC, open the "Console" app on the Mac, and look at the messages. If the problem -is- on the PC end, I'm sorry, but I'm not PC-savvy enough to tell you how to fix it. Hopefully, this will get you closer.

  • Home network file sharing

    Hi,
I've recently lost the ability to view my photo's,music etc on my laptop using a freesat box and have a feeling its been missing since i changed my home hub 3 for another home hub 3 a while ago. When setting these up i seem to remember an option on the installation to allow file sharing on my home network? If this is correct how do i find out if its switched on and turn it on if not. I've been into hub manager but just find it anywhere? Thanks in advance, fish.

If w7 then go to network ans sharing and make sure sharing is enabled

  • 4 Macs different network/file sharing errors on all

Out of the box current generation Mini with Yosemite can access one old Mini with 10.7 and it;s attached 3 external drives. The externals no problem, the folders inside of that Mac’s home folder show restricted access on most. Two MBPs running Mavericks can fully access other Macs and their attached drives.  None of those 3 Macs can access the new. It shows in “Shared” but displays “Not Connected” when attempting to open, none of the new Macs attached drives naturally are not accessible either. I’ve tried using my I.D. and get the login shakes, try Apple I.D. and get the same. When attempting to share screen with the new one on any of the others gives me the login prompt. That prompt will not take my I.D. or Apple I.D. I get an “Authentication failed to “……..” verify manx and password. The new Mini can not connect to the 2 MPBS running Mavericks the same login window comes up and get the same failed message when trying both I.D.s. Or it says not connected and I try the connect as.  Nor can I sharer the screen of the new Mini. I’ve tried turning off sharing then reboot turn sharing on reboot, no luck.
Have gone into file sharing and added each folder and drive making sure that all users have read & write enabled on all of them. No luck. Have done the same thing on the 2 MPBS and still can not connect. The two MBPS are on the WiFi my network the Minis are wired to the network. Shared in the side bar only shows the new Mini and Others icon, click Others to get to network drives where I have attempted to connect. Attempting to access the new mini with old Mini gives me the “connection failed” message. So new mini can access old mini but with restrictions in Home Folder, old Mini can not access new mini in any way.
The other 3 Macs all connect to each other with both screen sharing and file sharing and never a problem. They just can’t connect to the new Mini. Firewall and FileVault are off on all Macs. I do not use Time Machine on any of them. The new Mini replaced one from the previous generation that runs Mavericks, that one has not been hooked up yet, still power off sitting on a shelf. Do not want to have a 5th problem yet, let me get the first 4 talking to each other first.
Did any of this make sense? Does anyone have suggestions. I have tried all things found here with search “file sharing”. Forgot to mention, on the new Mini the problem was there out of the box and remained after running the OS update.
    Thanks

No need, I'm the only user and have  myself set on all as admin.  Never in all my near 30 years of networking Macs at home and managing my companies 600 or so Mac Network,  with 68k, PPC, Intel units all running systems 7 - 8 - 9 -10 and all their mid versions and never had a lick of trouble with any sharing services. I've always just stuck them on the wire, fired up, and hit share, tick the boxes then Boom, all was seen by all. Same at home up till recently I had a G5 Tower as a server mixed in with all the intel, never a hiccup.  The only troubles would be if a router or switch burned out.  None of my iPhones, or iPods of various generations have had a problem with the home WiFi, the ones set up for disk usage have always shone up in the shared section of the sidebar, since have turned off disk usage so not part of the problem.
    Thanks for trying though

  • Finder Freezing During Network File Transfer

I have 2 external G-Drives daisy chained via FW800 on another Mac in the house.  Sometime when I try to look at the drive in finder from another computer on the network Finder freezes.  All I can do is a forced renoot and then things are back to normal.  Sometimes this happens when I try to look at the second hard drive in the daisy chain or during file transfers I will get an error code - 50.
Again after a reboot things are normal again, but it happens more often then not.

Just did that this morning, and it made know difference.
After computer goes to sleep if I wake it up via the network drive 1 loads and 2nd daisy chain drive kills finder.
    System reboot fixes it.

First off, I should say that I’m a PC guy who’s trying to get used to his Mac and figure out how to make it do what he wants.
So I’ve been having lots of trouble with my Mac mini. I got it this past summer and had various problems. I’d thought I’d gotten them all sorted out until this latest issue.
Here’s a quick summary of what I want to end up with: the Mac mini is supposed to be my TV computer. I have 4 external hard drives connected to it. I need to be able to access and fully manipulate the external drives over the network from a PC.
Enabling the basic samba sharing was easy. I got that working beautifully, but I was only able to access my home directory, not the external hard drives. After investigating on the Internet, it seems that I learned just enough to screw everything up.
I found out that I needed to “just” edit my smb.conf file, but I couldn’t figure out how to find it. It seems I can only get to it via Terminal or something. So I looked for alternatives.
I found a guide on Mac sharing beyond the home directory (http://www.creativemac.com/2002/10_oct/tutorials/samba021007.htm) and installed the Samba Sharing preference pane (http://xamba.sourceforge.net/ssp/index.shtml). This gave me a preference pane with both a GUI and a text editor for the smb.conf file. Seemed like a dream come true. I was even able to specify all the shares I wanted. It seemed simply and easy.
I did run into some trouble when I installed it. I got a bunch of error messages about files not being in their default location or how files needed to be updated. I thought that I had fixed all that, though I couldn’t fix the message about how files needed to be updated.
The problem is that whenever I clicked on “Start”, the entire thing crashes. Further, not samha sharing doesn’t work at all anymore. I’ve tried using the built-in samba sharing that used to work fine, but that does nothing.
I’ve tried removing every trace I can fine of the Samba Sharing preference pane I installed, but that hasn’t changed anything either. When I reinstall it, all my old settings are still there, so there must be some files saved somewhere, but I can’t find them.
I also tried installing Sharepoints (http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/), but that didn’t change anything either.
Currently, I can’t access the Mac from any PC. I can ping the Mac’s IP fine, but I can’t browse to it on the network nor can I go directly to it. I’m not even prompted to sign in, I just get a message that it’s not valid and I should check the address.
On the Mac, I can access the PC that’s on the same workgroup as it, but I can’t access any other workgroups (which I used to be able to do).
So… what do I do now? I can’t figure out how to reset everything and start over. Right now, I’d be happy with that. Then I can try dealing with the external shares again (and more carefully this time).

Unplug your printer from your HP and use ??built in Wi-Fi that your printer has?? a usb Wi-Fi printer dongle?? Return your wireless router and get {http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/} and share many usb devices over the wi-fi network (need a powered hub for more than one usb device)?? or go to a big box store ( saw one at staples ) and get a device that is designed for 2 computers to use one printer.
How it works; USB cables one from PC, one from Mac plug into this box then one usb cable comes out and plug into your printer. Looks like a " Y " connection when your done. ( PS: usb cables not supplied)
    Made by Belkin I believe.
PS: I had your problem till I bought a Prof Biz color all in one from Minolta /Bizhub 20 and Network the printer. So many choices, I picked the oldest device and replaced it and glad i did.
    Good Luck

  • Local Area Network File Sharing Help Needed Please!

Hello I've got a question. I'm trying to set up two Macs that are connected to the same router so that we can share files between each one. Is there a way to do this so that there's only ONE specific folder that each computer has access to on the other?
For instance I'd like it so that there's ONLY ONE folder on my hard drive that the other computer can access and vice versa.
Is this possible? I've read some literature on this subject and it says that when you allow sharing it makes your entire public directory accessible and that's not what I want.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Paul, this is straight forward to do and have it work each time your 'client' mac starts up for a particular user.
    Assumtions:
    • both macs share the same subnet (Assuming the one used by the router)
    • assuming you can communicate with each of them from each other .
    • assuming both of these are OS 10.4 or 10.3 .. just making sure its not another ye olde os)
    • assume that the MAC where you want the FOLDER (directory) placed is always going to be available. (ie doesn't fall into sleep mode)
    • assuming reasonable network speed (I dont know what you client MAC will be using in its work flow - large or small files e.g.)
    • assuming that you dont mind if ANYONE in your system of two macs can accesse the folder (keep it simple for now)
    Steps:
(on your SERVER mac).. the "NAS server" machine.
    • create the folder in your ~/public/<myshared_foldername> (anywhere would do btw or on one of the volumes in /volumes.....
•set up the priviliges using the FINDER WINDOW for the foler (+i) (get info)
(for example there is an "OWNERSHIP and PERMISSIONS" .. expand it all and it's pretty self explanatory". For simplicity here, just make it available to ALL and sundry.
    • do what ever you do to put an icon and a label & comment on the folder
    (on your client mac)
    • assuming all network connections are cool and you have both airport and/or ethernet/and or/FW connectivity via your router....
    • in the finder use +k (go to server) and put in the local name of or the IP address (to choose your fastest path) to the MAC that is your server.
    • answer any prompts for user and password. If you dont care, you can have that MAc log into the SERVER mac using your normal user and passwrd as a registered user, else default to guet.
    All so far very simple.
Now the tric is to have it AUTOMATIC so tha when your client mac startups and someone on that machine needs access to your SERVER (As a NAS server), it just happens.
and this is simply achived on the client machine by adding ing it into the LOGIN ITEMS for that user (and the others).
    How is that done?
Simply DRAG AND DROP the desktop folder icon of the folder(s) to be shared) into the "login items" for the (system preferences/accounts/" users on the CLIENT machine. If there are multiple usres that need this then do it for all of them or have them do it.
I think you can also enable some options in the SERVER's (NAS) system preferences/"energy saver" to wake itup whould it go to sleep.. such as 'wake up for ether net access" or something.
anyway.. it gets more complex when you want to perform specific accesses and rights to the folders and the sub directories.
This is simply implementing NFS I beleive.
This will work first time and we use it all the time without the need for COTS or brand-x software.apps to make it happen.
    hope that helps
