10.3.3 Agent Update Taking Weeks, Only Deploying to ~600 PCs

We're having an issue where deploying the update to the 10.3.3 agent is taking a long time, only a few dozen a day and only about 600 workstations are currently assigned the task. We have a gigabit fiber WAN, so that's not an issue. We have one primary server and 2 satellites. Some update without error, but about half of the ones completed so far, have completed with errors and just 3 failed.
After about a month, we still have 162 devices pending. It looks that only about 15-25 devices a day attempt the update. The task has no restrictions on when or how the system updates, other than selected devices. I'll post a log file or 2 when I get them.
Any ideas on why so few machines are updating?

Are all your workstation being used everyday?

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

• ZENworks agent update from workstation.

Hi there,
Is there a way to get workstations to update themselves automatically with the latest version of the ZENworks agent. (ZCM 11.2.3.a is what we have)
We have a standard image which has a older version of the ZCM agent on it. Images are pulled down and the workstations are automatically built.
Various bundles are then installed automatically on the workstations. When we update the image with other changes etc, we will add the new agent to it.
But until we do that, instead of me having to manually check for all new machines built in the last week / month and then assign the agent update to them,
is there a process, script, bundle of something that can run on the workstation to update the agent itself to the latest version we have.
We are using ZCM 11.2.3a and we need to do this without having to manually visit 200-400 machines.
Thanks
Mark

While I (And Microsoft) recommends configuring your Router/Switches to
pass WOL packets from your trusted WOL Servers (Primaries in this case),
it is also possible to use WOL Proxies to allow this to happen across
your subnets.
There are also some Windows settings that may be necessary to allow WOL
to work from a deep sleep state. I would recommend researching those as
well.
If you are concerned about deploying updates when users are not using
the devices, WOL is something with which I recommend you become more
comfortable using.

You seem to have Firefox 5.0 already installed and the Google toolbar will not work with that version or any future version of Firefox. Firefox 5.0.1 is the current version. Firefox 6 is scheduled to be released (replacing Firefox 5.0.1) on 08-16-2011 (subject to change).
Google decided that they will no longer produce the Google Toolbar for Firefox beyond Firefox 4. Future versions of Google toolbar will only work with IE7-9. Google Toolbar is not available on any other browser, even Google's own browser.

• Agent SW taking focus of typing

Hey,
So we're having issues with the agent software taking the focus of the screen. The agents are typing in another application and when a call comes in the agent software takes over and they can no longer type in the previous program. It appears as if setting the software to stealth resolves the issue, but then the work wrap-up does not appear to pop up at all. is there a way to get the best of both worlds?
where:
1) the agent software does not take over the desktop
2) the wrap up data still does come up.
Bizzarre request, i know.

I am testing from my desk with the 4 modes, however i can't get the work wrapup to come up for me (it must only come up on a queue call as opposed to a directed call when i am "not ready".)
it looks like the agents are minimizing the window (which forces it to pop up and take focus on the desktop), i'll see if keeping it up on the desktop (behind another app even) helps them.

• Endpoint Protection Signature Updates taking up Terabytes of Internet Data

I have my antimalware policy set up as below. I've been looking a web traffic reports on our firewalls and I can see that as of mid-December a lot of clients are going to the internet for their EP definition updates. In January alone client machines used
up 44 TB of data going to download.windowsupdate.com for updates.
I don't really understand why as my policy says not to even use Microsoft Update as a source at all.
What I've noticed on the firewall reports is that Monday resulted in literally 100 times more traffic than Wednesday which led to me thinking it might having something to do with the "If configuration manager is used as a source for definition updates
...." setting. This setting has a default value of 72 hours so if a client gets an update at 8 am on Friday morning then is turned off on Friday afternoon for the weekend and doesn't get turned on until 9 am on Monday morning this would mean it hasn't
had an update in 73 hours.
What happens at this point? I looks like the client goes to download.windowsupdate.com even when the policy says not to. It also looks like it doesn't first check for updates from Config Manager before it does this.
Another thing that doesn't make much sense is that this only started happening mid-December and I had been using SCCM for EP updates for nearly two months by that time.
Any ideas?
Hibs Ya Bass!

There is no value in that registry key.
HHowever I have noticed that my ADRs have the below setting. I'm not sure what will happen with this setting enabled when I have no fallback locations configured.
Here are some logs of a typical PC going to the internet for updates - remember not all PCs are doing this.
From the mplogxxxx.log below you can see the EP client starting up at 23:50 UTC with version 1.67.1843.0 signatures installed. This version is out of date.

A few minutes later at 23:55 (07:53 local time) the below happens in the WindowsUpdate.log where you can clearly see the client downloading the latest signatures from download.windowsupsate.com (i've removed some of the rows where the WU engine goes through
all the updates to get under the 60,000 character limit)

• Haven't gotten updates for weeks

I have a lot of changes related to account credit limits, a couple new accounts, a couple closed accounts, etc., and haven't gotten updates for weeks. I subscribe to Equifax and Experian's services and as well as Credit Karma and I get alerts and updates regularly through them. My info on here however is stuck on June 4 for EQ and TU and May 30th for Experian. They have no problem taking out their monthly fee so it is not a billing issue. I am getiting a bit frustrated - anyone else seeing a massive delay in updates?

I notice no one with myfico ever comes on this section to explain or justify their actions.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
3. Other issues
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

My iPhone3GS running iOS5 has recently been reluctant to upgrade Apps. The App store asks for my password and then marks all the Apps as being updated. Often only one or none actually update. Usually I get a message saying "Unable to download application" and "<app> could not be downloaded at this time - Done or Retry".
It's not an iTunes login / password issue because sometimes one or two of the Apps will download and the others stall with the blank progress bar. The internet connection is working fine in all other respects.
Sometimes, many restarts later the downloads will complete. Is this a known bug? Is Apple working on it? Any fixes?

About once a month I receive the Software update notice that has failed. How do I find out who/what is trying to update? If I decided I want this update how do I allow it to continue? If I decided I do not want this update how do I stop it and its attempt to update? The only response allowed is "OK". When OK is selected the window goes away and nothing else happens.

Hi sharkbiscuit79,
Yes your cabinet 10 on the Crediton exchange has already been installed and linked with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet (making it able to provide FTTC fibre broadband) and has been Accepting FTTC orders since December 2013. PCP10 (with it's DSLAM cabinet within 100meters of it) is locate on the junction of Commercial Road and the A3072.
However by the looks of things your are just too far away to obtain a FTTC (VDSL2) connection, meaning FTTC fibre broadband is not available to you.
Have a look at the Connecting Devon and Somerset Considerations (particularly the last paragraph) - http://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/where-when-map-conditions/
Your best bet is to talk to Connecting Devon and Somerset to see if there are any further plans to get a fibre based service to your area via https://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/contact-us/ (as your area may not be inscope of any further deployment). Best give them your full address and landline number too as they can check if you are within a NGA area.
