10.3.9 Internet issues

Hi All
i have been trawling through the fourms and still cannot find a solution to my iMac internet issues. I have done a complete format and reinstall of Mac OS X 10.3.9 (to be fair i downloaded update on another computer and instelled via USB stick) everything works great can import into firewire from camcorder etc. Airport card can see the wireless connection but when i enter the password it states there is a problem and connot connect. I have tried everying (to what i can understand anyway) and teh main reason for a clean install was to get rid of any possible conflicts that may have been there.
everything else can use the internet including my MacBook (intel) fine. Some one did suggest once that DNS settings were not correct which to be honest i did not userstand how to alter them, plus if eberying else was ok why just this iMac playing up.
Please can you assist just want to this to connect so my son can upload his filming to pleople for his re school assignments.
thank you in advance
Peter

Oops!
Could you specify what iMac you have, the specs of the system & computer,
as that may help research or find workable ideas for you to try. This would
help in troubleshooting, or in discovering Support articles to link you to in
the course of a discussion.
I just re-read your post and had thought it was for a later
mac + OS X that would not run in PowerPC vintage!
(The mention of MacBook threw me off, as did a recent newer
OS X upgrade that may run -- in that newer hardware 10.9.3)
So you've upgraded a PowerPC iMacG4 to Leopard 10.3.9
and the internet doesn't work? The wireless router may be
using a different security protcol than the old Airport Card
can support; you may have to test the unit via Ethernet to
be sure the computer itself is fully updated. It may go to
Apple servers to look for Software Updates.
The settings for the wireless security may be incorrect,
since later WPA2, won't apply to vintage AirPort card.
With a later OS X such as Tiger 10.4(.11) the odds do
improve for connectivity to the internet.
The DNS settings should not be an issue if you can use the
internet with a recent version computer and later OS X.
Not sure how to help, except to try as a test, to run without
the security you'd really want with the wi-fi (WPA2, etc)
turned on, to see if the old iMac can then use it.
Another issue would be the lack of correct frequency; a
newer Wi-Fi system may not be set to be backward
compatible to 802.11a/b, newer ones use 802.11/b/g/n/+
You may check to see if the router has a setting to allow
use of lower or older spec connection.

Has anyone else had this problem, if so any help would be great, casue I really do not want to take the computer in again only for them to tell me its fine.

  • Incessant Internet Issues

    Hi there
It's been a while since I last posted on these forums with an internet issue, but my connection is really messed up. I'll see if I can do the speedtester stuff in between the constant disconnections that I am getting.
My router stats are at the end of this message. Despite the fact my Downstream speed keeps switching between 6Mbps - 7.9Mbps, I am getting around 1.6Mbps, which I expect. The very high number of errors is telling me that my line is really noisy: my parents have told me that the line, when using the phone, was very noisy when calling other people, which would confirm that theory.
I do know that there are some works being done in a plot of land right next to the telephone exchange and I suspect it's BT adding the fibre broadband exchange in preparation of activating fibre in my area by the end of the year, is it possible this is causing line issues ? I know we've also had really bad weather and I'm suspecting this to be a factor in my connection issues.
Many thanks for any help I can get.

I'm not connected to test socket, but I doubt that would make a difference to a noisy line ?
I'll do quiet line test, but my router settings do seem to be indicating the line is noisy. Here's another set of stats from just now.

  • Is July 9 internet issue a problem for Mac Pro users?

Is the July 9 internet issue a problem for Mac Pro users or has Apple taken care of this issue in updates?

It is a only a problem for users affected by the malware that replaces their DNS IPs on their macs. They already have a serious problem which they should fix. Follow the url in sig's post to determine if you are infected and how to remove it.

  • Lots of crazy internet issues

I seem to be having a massive amount of random internet issues after upgrading to Leopard. The first and most apparent is that Mail and iChat both get randomly disconnected and Mail often insists that it cannot connect to the IMAP server one moment, only to work perfectly again within a minute while no other internet services (Safari, Transmission) are affected.
Safari has decided that http://news.bbc.co.uk is actually http://www.apple.com. I kid you not. I try and look at BBC news and I am consistently redirected to Apple's website. news.bbc.co.uk/iphone goes to apple.com/iphone. I've never seen anything like it before in my life.
Mail's RSS feeds seem to randomly disappear. No trace of their existence is left. After switching the 'default RSS reader' preference to Safari and then back to Mail, they re-appear - with all articles unread.
On the whole, quite a number of confusing bugs.

So, what happens if you go here: http://212.58.226.73/ ? That's the IP address that news.bbc.co.uk is supposed to point to. I found that by looking in Tiger's Network Utility as my Leo is still on it's way to me. If you want to know what that IP is before going there ( a good idea ), you can put that in the lookup tab on Net Util and see what comes back.
If the IP works, then DNS is hosed somewhere. See what Net Util says news.bbc.co.uk translates to. If it the number above, it's a Safari thing. If it's apple (starts with 17 IIRC) then it might be fixable by flushing the DNS cache though I don't know how to in Leo (shouldn't be hard).
If you did an upgrade install, you might want to reinstall using Archive and Install.

  • Very odd internet issues.

I just bought a 21.5" refurbed iMac. Worked great for a week and now for the past week or so, I cannot stay connected to either Firefox or Safari for more than 2 minutes before the browser starts "Looking up" the website and then it completely disconnects. I go into the network diagnostics while this is happening and I see that Internet and Server have orange dots next to them, then after a little while those dots turn red along with ISP's dot. I called my ISP yesterday and they said that everything on their end is good. I believe them because, I had been playing WoW and Warhammer Online since I got the computer and have played for up to three hours at a time, and I never had any disconnects or lag form the games at all. I even connected to WoW while my browser's connection was tanking to see if I could connect and I did just fine with no lag or disconnects. I even pinged some websites while this was going on and that worked as normal. Probably the oddest thing of all this, is that if I go straight from my cable modem to my computer I get absolutely no internet at all. I can only go through my router to get connected. I did call Apple about this and the only thing they came up with was for me to delete these com.apple.safari, and com.apple.mozilla files, but that didn't work. So, now I'm at a loss of what to do. I've restored my router back to factory settings and downloaded an update for it, played with IP addresses and DNS addresses and nothing is working out. With each day that passes the connection times to my browsers get less and less. My router is a Netgear WGR614 v.5 btw. This all seems to happen when I just go wireless with the iMac also. If there's anybody out there that can help it would be greatly appreciated.
TLDR: Internet browsers don't stay connected to internet, but I can play online games, and ping websites with no issues. Modem straight to computer does not work, have to go through router to connect. Called ISP and called Apple, but no solutions have helped.

Based on which device is configured to negotiate the internet connection with his ISP this is to be expected. For example, if his router were programmed to negotiate through the modem and establish the external IP and also negotiate with all the devices on his LAN and assign the internal IPs, then his Mac is only configured to get its internal IP from the router.
So, if he removes the router from the setup, then he would need to reconfigure the Mac to now negotiate directly with his ISP for its internet connection.
He does not mention having done any of that in his post. So an explanation of how the home LAN is setup and each device configured would be helpful in understanding what may be going wrong.

  • Internet issues on my new Macbook Pro.

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on an issue I have been having! I've just got a new Macbook Pro, so late 2011 model and ever since having it I have had issues with the internet. Forgive me if I'm not able to explain very well what is going on, but ill give it my best shot.
So I'm Wi-Fi to connect, which is on a 10mb connection, and using Safari on the Mac. When I first open Safari, the apple home page loads straight away no issue. I tend to be able to use the net for about 10 minutes without any issue. Then, for no reason whatsoever, Ill click on a link or type a web address, and it will take FOREVER to load, sometimes it won't load at all. I'm not talking anything heavy with pics or video, just a standard webpage, it could be anything. The other issue I have, is for example like today, I was on the guardian website, and I opened a few links in some new tabs, probably about 8 in total and the same thing always happens. Some load instantly, some take forever, so fail to open at all. If I turn the Wifi off on the Mac, and literally straight back on again, and refresh any page, it will load instantly (about 80% of the time this works). then after a few minutes same thing happens. Then after a while, it will go back to normal again and so forth and so forth! It's becoming quite frustrating.  The wifi connection isnt lost, its still connected according tot he symbol at the top, it just isnt working.
The best way I can describe it, is its like the router is getting 'clogged up' and struggles to get any info to my Mac. then after a while, it de-clogs itself and were good to go for a few minutes again.
I've never had this problem, with my main pc which is connected wirelessly, or even my little netbook I was using as a laptop before this. I was able to open as many links and tabs as I wanted with no issue, and never had hang times like this whilst waiting for anything to open!  There doesnt appear to be an issue with my connection, as every pc, phone and even ps3 can connect without a single issue.  The PS3 will happily stream HD netflix without any issue over wifi
I'm not sure what is going on! When my Mac is downloading big files, it never seems to have any problems and the d/l speed stays pretty consistent. I've run speediest at various points during various days, and I'm getting a pretty steady 10mb.
Anyone that can shed any light would be a lifesaver!! I'm hoping there isn't an issue with the Mac however this is getting to the point of unbearable, and im close to returning the **** thing!
    Thanks in advance!

  • HP Pavilion p7-1414 PC Internet Issues

Wasn't sure where to put this..
Lately I have been experiencing an issue with the Internet on this computer. I am a gamer, so basically when I play games and browse the internet (Google Chrome) and every now and than Skype a friend. Whenever I do this all at the same time the internet gets REALLY slow. I mean like Skype get's really staticy, everything on Google Chrome loading really slow, and having really high latency in a game (Doesn't matter which game).
And i've looked into this with all the computers, and any issues with the router, etc. But my other desktop I have in the room with me, doesn't do this. Runs perfectly smooth while I do all of this.
So after testing all of this and looking into this I have come to a conclusion. The Network Adapter built into the computer doesn't work properly or is just bad. So I tried to hook a Dynex Wireless G Network Adapter (Model No. DX-BUSB) into the computer. It crashes the computer within 5 minutes sometimes within 30 seconds whenever I tried this.
I would really like some assistance in this issue of mine. Thank you for your time if you managed to read this far.

  • Lumia 520 internet issues

My phone has been working fine since I got it a few months ago, but it got dropped on the floor this morning and since then some internet services has failed to work.
The internet app and the email app work just fine, except for twitter and Facebook websites. For some reason the Facebook and twitter app also cannot load anything. Text messages can be received and seen through the notification bar, but the messages app cant load them. Anyone know of a fix for this? Or shall I have to send it off for repairs?

Have you tried deleting them and then re-adding them to your phone?
If the issue persists, look into installing the 8.1 Developers Previer.
Alternatively, if you can puchase apps on your phone consider buying Metro Mail - it's a Gmail app with functionality similar to Android and iOS apps, and an app I use for work emails.

  • 15" Macbook Pro internet issue

I'm terrible at keeping up with updates, so I did a few updates yesterday and afterwards ran into a pretty obnoxious problem.
Everytime I close the lid to put my Pro asleep and return to it, whether it be an hour later or just a few minutes, my interent does not want to work.
Airport says it is connected to my home wifi network, but there is no internet connection. Safari gives me the error message "failed to open page because you are not connected to the internet" and suggests I troubleshoot the connection. When I do a network diagnostic, all options are green and it says that I am connected to the internet. Airport in the network menu also comes up green and says that I am connected and lists an IP address. Safari still says no connection, Chrome and Twitter also report the same thing.
Switching networks (I have a few networks around my location that I am allowed to use) does not solve the problem, the same exact situation occurs on any network I connect to.
The only way I have been able to solve the problem is by connected to another network, then doing network disgnostic and changing the connected network to my home network. After doing the diagnostic, everything works fine.
I can fix it, but this is pretty obnoxious. Anyone have any suggestions?

sorry to tell you this but there are loads of us with this issue and it seems to be affecting anyone with 10.6.5 and later.
Nothing you can do except complain and harrass their tech dept as i have done, then they might take it seriously and admit tey have a software issue.
unbelievable seeing as they cost so much.
email them and keep your fingers crossed! good luck

  • Internet issues - Firefox is the only browser that works

I'm connected to the internet through a wireless connection. Firefox is my default browser, and I have no issues using it. However, no other browsers can connect to the internet. I've tried Safari, Opera and Camino and none of them work. It doesn't make any sense to me why this wouldn't work if Firefox works just fine.

  • Does itunes 10.1 resolve the slow internet issues of itunes 10?

    Hi guys,
when I installed iTunes 10 I experienced extremly slow internet connections and after looking through the forums, decided as some other users to revert back to iTunes 9. This did resolve my problems.
Now I note that iTunes has moved to 10.1 and I was wondering whether people who have installed it have any issues with their internet connection. I have an iMac 2.67 Quad - intel with OSX 10.6.5.
I would not want to go through all this again, I have been quite disappointed by this issue and the lack of support to it so I'd rather save the trouble and keep my opinion of Apple from any further damage !

i was just forced to install 10.1 b/c 8.21 (BEST itunes version ever - super fast, never crashed, etc) which worked flawlessly finally told me i had to upgrade b/c i could no longer see the store - it just stopped working. it's VERY painful to use 10.1 now, esp the store. this thread covers the same topic:

  • How to troubleshoot intermittent Internet Issue at a primary school

I would change the password on your wireless and only hand it out to staff that need it or as they ask for it one by one.  That gives you a way to see what is connecting to your network and when it goes down you have a small number of staff that you know have the password.  I would be suspicious also of a AP possibly being set in a bridge mode and is causing a loop in your system.  The DNS could also be a cell phone or cellular enabled laptop/tablet that is sharing it's connection and causing a problem with your system.

I have been struggling for three or four weeks trying to resolve this issue. I am now of the opinion that there are two different issues here each contributing to the problem. To give you a breakdown. The school has two servers, one internet caching/filtering/proxy server, 20 computers, 45 laptops (most wired in, not wireless) and a dozen ipads.About three weeks ago I received reports that the Internet was very slow and timing out frequently. After spending some time troubleshooting the issue, I decided to shut down the children's computers (unplug from network), the wireless access points and the shared area computers. I only had one switch running as I connected everything to that switch.
I left it for about three days - everything seemed to work. So I added the kids computers. Internet continued to work without any issues, but we...

  • MacBook Pro Internet issue

    Hello,
I bought my MacBook Pro about 3 months ago (my first Mac) and I am having some pretty annoying internet/connectivity issues.
The issue I am having is that I suddenly lose internet service randomly. The bars on the top right of the screen will still show full, yet I can't connect. I contacted my ISP and they came over to my house and replaced my cable modem. I also bought a new router (Netgear) since my last one was old.
I still am having the same issue. Also, when it is working it only works if I am maybe 15 feet from my router. If I go any further in the house I lose service again.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Access the router's admin area and try changing the channel to 9. Then I would try using OpenDNS servers.

  • Really frustrating internet issues (N8 Belle)

    Hi guys,
Just got my phone back after more than four months of it being stuck in the repair shop for camera issues. The net result was that they eventually just replaced the entire motherboard and case - the phone I got back wasn't the phone I dropped in. Not that that bothered me - the case was in better nick than my old one, and everything worked - just had some data loss to deal with.
The point, though, is that not only were all my settings lost, but the guys at the shop took the opportunity to install Belle onto the handset as well (which is not yet officially available here in Australia). Since I've had it back (the last 6 or so hours of fiddling with it) I've yet to be able to get any of the additional apps that require internet connectivity to work - Social, Ovi store, Email, the Weather app from Beta Labs - nothing. I know that the internet is working on it, since the main web browser will access the internet. I don't have wi-fi to test it on, so this is all going through 3G (Telstra, if it's relevant).
I honestly can't figure out why it's doing this. Do I have a faulty unit? Or is this some kind of externally imposed 'punishment' for people accessing Belle before it's officially released in Austraia? Or are their legitimate problems with the OS that mean it doesn't yet fully integrate with our carriers? Or am I just doing something stupid and not setting the phone up correctly?
As frustrating as it will be, if it is just a matter of waiting until an official Australian Belle release comes around, I can handle that (I've gone 4 1/2 months without the unit at all, I can wait a couple more without email and facebook apps), but if there is a solution, I'd like to know about it, similarly if it's a faulty unit... well, at that point I'll probably just give up and downgrade to an N9 (I like my big fancy 12mp camera, though ).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The networks wouldn't be able to detect your OS, so you can rule that out. It can only be the settings within your phone.
Forgive me but I no longer have a belle device so this is from memory:-
    Try going to settings-Connectivity-Internet Connections-Internet
See what order they are set to access the internet and make sure the correct one is top of the list.
Again, apologies this is from memory, but the required settings should be around there.
If I have helped you, please hit the star at the bottom of my posts - it's appreciated!
