10.3.9 Server with 10.4.x clients: any problems?

I'm thinking of upgrading our clients from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6 (fresh install), while keeping the server on 10.3.9. The server is used as OD-Master, Mailserver, DNS, DHCP and Netboot (only for installing).
Are there any experiences, hints and problems?

I did this exact thing. Corrupted imapd.conf. Corrected by restoring imapd.conf.default (or whatever it's called) via cp imapd.conf.default imapd.conf. Then I had no users. Was told to rebuild the cyrus database.
Although I was running the 10.3.9 server, I was directed to kb article #107996. I followed those steps, saw no errors during the rebuild process and all the users reappeared with their mail.
I note that kb article #301694 simplifies the process for Server 10.3.9 - don't know if that works or not as I did the process for Server 10.3 - 10.3.8 on the direction of an Apple Care specialist.

As far as your issue goes, you need to provide more details before anyone could begin to guess, as we're not mind readers here.
What do you mean by "Windows only sees the router, not the server"? What does "sees" mean in this context?
Who / what is Windows proofs?
How are you trying to access the server? SMB file sharing? If so, how are you trying to connect? What happens when you try? Do the users trying to authenticate to the server have an account on it and access to the necessary services?

Your Mac must be on Lion (10.7) to run iCloud. Apple had to change the operating system to fully support it. Nevertheless, it is possible to get emails from iCloud without having Lion. Please tell me if this interests you.

we are using the G Web Server with LabVIEW on a WinNT 4 machine. Up to now these works fine. Therefore I would recommend you to choose a more stable OS.
Maybe you can try to programmatically restart the server every 2 days. Within LabVIEW you would do this by running "HTTP Server Control.vi". Unfortunatly all connections will be closed, thus be aware of that!

OS X 10.4/5 Server with PC and Mac Clients - Advice Appreciated

I have inherited a OS X 10.4 server and a user base of about 15 fulltime PC users, 10 fulltime Mac users, 10 printers.
This thread will likely contain a LOT of questions as time goes on.
1. Should I set the PCs to Workgroup or Domain? As I have so many users I would prefer a domain setup but am not sure how that works with the OSX server.
2. Is it worth it to upgrade to 10.5? As the processor is a G5 I cannot go to Snow Leopard.

1: Domain definitely. Run Open Directory. Keep in mind you WILL NOT be able to support and run Group Policy extensions for the Windows Machines. I highly suggest you run Parallels or VMWare (if this is on a Mac Pro or XServe Intel machine) and run Windows Server 2008 or Small Business Server 2008 to manage the Windows Machines.
If you do not have a Mac Pro or XServe, or cannot afford to upgrade to a Mac Pro, then I would build a server class PC to run Windows Server or Small Business Server 2008. You can then lock down your Windows machines, run Exchange for collaboration (including push e-mail to iPhones, Windows Mobile and Blackberry devices), provide group policy and run WSUS to update your windows machines automatically.
Trying to patch the windows machines will be a royal pain in the butt without using Windows Software Update Services (part of Windows Server). You will also want an enterprise grade security solution that runs off of Windows Server, such as Trend Micro's Worry Free Business Security 6.1, to content filter, provide anti-virus and anti-malware security and spam filtering. You can use a web based console to check on virus scans, provide security lockdowns etc. There is NO enterprise grade security system that runs the web console off of Mac OS X Server at this time. There are plenty of clients (Trend Micro, Internet Security Barrier, Sophus etc), but no way to control the anti-virus clients on the Windows machines from the Mac server.
You can use your current mail, or if you go with Small Business Server you can run Exchange which is way more capable that the very limited mail capability in OSX Server 10.411. I ran 10.4 server until two months ago at my work, where we upgraded to 10.6.
Group Policy, which is similar to Workgroup Manager Server Preferences, will allow you to lock down and secure your windows machines. You can lock the screen, send software updates, provide firewall preferences etc. This requires Windows Server.
10.5 is totally worth the upgrade. It adds RADIUS support (you can secure and lock down your VPN connections with XAUTH and your wifi access points to require a username and password, rather than just a password), it provides MUCH improved Software Update Services (10.4 Software Update Server is severely limited; it also cannot upgrade 10.5 or 10.6 clients. 10.5 SUS can update 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6 clients).
If you upgrade to OSX Server 10.5 you want to do a full bootable backup of the boot drive to an external Firewire drive. You can use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! to accomplish this. You can then attempt an upgrade, and if it screws up you can then restore the machine and plan to do a clean install and migrate your settings from the 10.4 install.

Locked files using a Windows 2003 File Server with Mac 10.6 clients running CS5

We migrated 40 Mac users from OS X 10.5/CS3 to OS X 10.6/CS5 back in November. Our InDesign files are kept on a Windows 2003 file server.
We have had fairly constant complaints of InDesign and Photoshop files being reported as locked when users try to save their work back to the server. This did not occur as frequently with CS3.
Has anyone else had this issue?

Mac OS X Server 10.4.10-11 client user problems

It appears that since updating to Mac OS X Server 10.4.10 (and now 10.4.11), running on an XServe G4 with 2GB of RAM, QuarkXPress Passport 6.5 (and also 6.52) crashes at the splash screen when newly created network users launch it on client computers running OS X 10.4.8, 10.4.10 and 10.4.11. QuarkXPress runs fine when logged in as the computer owner with administrator rights.
Users created under Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 do not have this problem and are able to launch QuarkXPress 6.5 or 6.52 without a problem on these same computers.
Quark license verification is supplied by a QLA 4.5 server running on a seperate computer to the OS X Server system.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to what may be causing the crash? A couple of extracts from the crash log are listed below - the full log is available if anyone can decipher it:

Have you tried repairing privileges and permissions on the affected clients?
You could also try creating a new admin account on the affected clients and logging in with that. Launch Quark and see if it behaves the same way. If it does not then its more likely some damaged/corrupted plist or preference in the primary admin account’s Home/Library/Preferences folder.
It could also be down to a damaged/corrupted font or Xpress Preferences file. Running the 10.4.10/11 update could be a red herring and its just coincidence that the issues you are seeing happened after the update. Generally an application crashes on launch or when opening a file because its had a problem building the font list or trying to access/load a font when the file has been requested. If your Font Management system is Suitcase remove the Suitcase Preferences folder from /Users/Home/Library/Preferences and restart the mac. Hopefully Quark should now launch. Redefine font sets from there. Quark keeps its Preferences file in /Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Quark.
Of course it could be none of these in which case start looking at drive/directory issues or possibly system issues. You may be looking at an Archive/Reinstall of the OS or Reinstall of the application. Don’t rule out a rebuild either.

Firefox 5 or 6 served over NFS to UNIX clients has problem finding shared object libraries.

With versions of firefox 3 and below, I was able to serve the application from a NFS share to all client workstations. Now I can not find a version above 3 that will run from just the NFS share. They all need shared libraries local (instead of just using the shared libraries in the NFS share)

It is just on Solaris we have the issue and even with local installed libraries it still crashes alot. On Redhat it works fine with the libraries in the NFS share.

Premiere Pro CS6 does not recognize USB PnP Sound device connected to iMac OSX even when activated in Audio MIDI setup. The iMac(i-7 processor,16 GB) is working with this USB device without any problem

Premiere Pro CS6 does not recognize the USB PnP Sound device in order to produce a commentary sound track. The USB device has been activated on the iMac OSX by using the Audio-MIDI-setup and is working correctly with the iMac. When opening > presets >audio hardware I can only select between >standard >out integrated > digital input integrated >microphone integrated. USB PnP is not indicated at this place.
With the built-in microphone of the iMac I can produce the commentary sound track, but I would prefer a stand alone version for better quality.

I'm using a Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 (which has a microphone on the side). I have several other devices plugged into separate USB slots: a keyboard, a mouse, my iPhone, and a Roland keyboard midi controller.
I've considered that maybe the webcam/mic combo is the culprit. If USB doesn't work at a constant speed, that could very well be causing the issue! The sound begins to lag badly sometimes when it's working properly, so that there's a multisecond delay between speaking and hearing my voice repeated back over the mic which is another sign that something is wrong. I've also caught it making a strange electronic sound during its "hang" time once it stops taking sound input correctly.
Maybe I should try to use line-in and forgo USB altogether then. I think I'd need a preamp and some sort of converter for that since the Mac Mini lacks a powered mic jack. I'm only a newbie musician so I've never set up such a system but it might be a better solution in the long run.
I'll check to see if it hangs before or after my computer enters suspend mode, that's a good suggestion too. Thank you for your help!

Its possible to integrate a java application running in the other server with enterprise portal.In portal i think there is a IView template call Java application template.Using this generally we can do this.But in you case what type of a java application is it?Just a class or webapplication or a server side application.This you can also acheive using a webdynpro applications as these are very flexible with integration into EP.In webdynpro you can use suspend and resume plugs to navigate from one application to other application.I have given my ideas how to implement.But integration mainly depends upon your landscape and version compatibilities and type of the application you need to integrate.

Is it possible to use a 10.9 server for authentication to apple clients without providing a network home?

We are testing 10.9 server with 2 10.9 clients. We would like to get away from Network Homes completely, but still provide authentication from our servers. All users homes need to be on the local Workstations. So far we have had no success. Test user accounts that we have created with homes on the 10.9 server login fine. However, user accounts that we have created with no homes get the infamous shake. I havent been able to find anything in the logfiles on the server that indicate what the problem might be. Im thinking this setup may not even be possible.

Firstly not only is this more than possible but it really should be easy.
Let's pretend the local account on one of your workstation's is 'dwayne' and has a password to match. You'd create a user account using the Server App with the same credentials (username and password). On configured shares add that user account to the share as an ACL (not a POSIX user), apply desired permissions and propagate.
Alternatively create an account that is not related to the dwayne local account in any way. Let's call it 'user' instead with a password to match. You use that instead to connect to the server.
Treat every other user in the same way.
By connect I mean "Connect to Server" from the Go Menu. When using the Go Menu you can either use the server's IP address (eg: 172.16.16.254) or it's FQDN (assuming DNS is set up correctly) or even it's Bonjour name (eg: server.local).
It really makes no difference whether you create a user with a network home or for services only. It's all about how you connect to the Server. If you've gone for networked homes you could bind client workstations to the server if you wish (although there's no real requirement for you to do so) and providing the required network elements are in place and functioning correctly (we're rmostly talking about DNS here) users with networked accounts will be able to log in and access their home folders on any workstation that's been bound to the mac server. But you could just as easily not bind client workstations and use the same account details to access a properly configured server shares (and additionally the user's network home folder) by selecting "Connect to Server" from the Go Menu instead.

The Samsung Syncmaster 930b will work just fine. I have exact the same screen on my Mac Mini. On my Mac Pro i do use now 2x a Samsung Syncmaster 206bw (20 inch) and those are also working perfect. All the Samsung screens will work fine on the Mac Pro.
Before i had my new 20 inch Samsung screens i used the 19 inch screen. Worked perfect.
