10.3.9 Upgrade Successful - Sort of

Just wanted to share my experience for others running 10.3.9 who are considering upgrading to Leopard.
My Configuration: MDD 1Ghz Dual processor G4, 512MB, Radeon 9600 Video Card, Sonnett 11g wireless card and USB 2.0 card, Apple SCSI Card.
Since I have quite a few 3rd party cards I did a little research and nothing came up so I took the plunge.
Prep:
1) Backed up apps, documents, pictures and iTunes libraries to my external drive. (Saved Me)
2) Set admin password. Was blank but I read it make cause keychain problems
3) Wrote down all my email incoming and outgoing mail server info (Saved Me)
4) Repaired Disk Permissions (Old Habit)
Upgrade:
I chose archive and install. The DVD verify took a long time. About 50 min. Then the upgrade started. It was estimating 4hrs 20 min. I watched it for awhile then went to bed.
When I checked it in the am all looked fine at first.
Problems I hit.
1) Keychains lost. Had to reenter various passwords. .Mac, email etc... Not a big deal
2) Video a little quirky. A little square would not refresh right around the mouse when moving windows. Reinstalled the drivers from the ATI Radeon CD and the problem went away.
3) .Mac mail came up ok but my POP accounts did not. Then after closing mail and then opening again Mail began crashing as reported by others. Ended up recreating my accounts and importing from my backup.
All my apps work fine including an old version of v.X MS Office. No wireless network issues connecting to an Airport Extreme. Overall performance is snappier than 10.3.9 although things seemed to have slowed a bit after applying 10.5.1.
So in short. Backup your data before upgrading!
Hope this was useful for some of the G4 MDD owners out there. Getting a lot of milage and value out of this machine.

Great, and it proves that with proper planning and an intelligent path it works.
Ahh, that everyone would be as meticulous as you. This board would be practically empty.

  • Server services won't upgrade successfully

    Greetings,
I am attempting to upgrade an intel XServe from 10.5.8 to 10.6. I have attemped a few different processes to achieve a successful result. The issue is that not all the services are upgrading successfully. Initially I cloned the 10.5 system to the 2nd internal drive and attempted an upgrade -- failed. Secondly I attempted a clean install and migration from the 1st drive and again attempted migration from a time machine backup -- failed and failed. In each instance the iChat service and Web services failed to upgrade and only a limited number of groups and users were migrated (the system has 77 users and 21 groups in addition to the built-ins). The system contains 2 dual-core processors, 4gb memory, 2 internal drives and a fibre channel card to an XServe RAID.
    Any suggestions?

I have never had success upgrading a server. There are just enough changes with each version that it usually ends up not working or hobbled by some mysterious corruption. Really the surest and most reliable solution is to do a manual setup and importation. Not a pleasant prospect in the short run, but the best bet for happiness in the long haul.
Export the users, groups, and computer groups from the Workgroup Manager (not computers unless you do not bind them to the domain), exporting the settings of your server in Server Admin (File->Export->Service Settings) as references only (consider screen shots if you prefer)!  Set up the new server from scratch, adding each service manually as needed matching the settings from the 10.5 server as appropriate.
Set up all your shares again, etc so they are identical to the way they were in the old server.
In Workgroup Manager import the users, then groups, computers (if you don't bind them to the domain) and computer groups.
Since this process does not include user passwords, you will need to select all users (except the diradmin) and enter a default password. Then require a password change at next login under Advanced->Options... in Workgroup manager. If you are not using OpenDirectory, then I cannot speak to user password management issues.

  • After upgrading successfully to 10.0.2 and 11, when I restart the next day, 3.6.28 opens. Please advise

using xp SP3. This has occurred every day since upgrading to the new versions. Able to upgrade successfully and use for the rest of the day. Then, after shutdown at night and upon restart in AM, older version opens.

Nothing has solved this issue. Each day I download and upgrade to the latest version directly from Mozilla. I install one add-on (Morning Coffee, which I have used for years). It updates sucessfully and I use FF with no issues the rest of the day. Then, in the morning, I am back to 3.6.28 (when I open FF, it begins by telling me my current/updated Morning Coffee is incompatible with 3.6.28).
    I have tried
    * deleting 3.6.28 completely before upgrading
*disabling my AVG Free before downloading & upgrading (enabling it again after the upgrade)
    *using no back up software
*not downloading & installing the Morning Coffee add-on
Would love assistance solving this! Thanks in advance....

  • WP8.1 Upgrade Successful for Developer Preview Phones?

    Hey,all.
For you folks who installed WP8.1 early via the developer preview program with their Lumia 822 and Lumia 928 phones, did the WP8.1/Denim upgrade perform successfully without any hiccups?
    Just curious.
    Thanks in advance!

Since the Windows Phone calendar shortcomings is one of my favourite rants, and since I know that developers hate users, especially when they are right - can someone please forward the link below to the Windows Phone developers, so they know what I expect from a smartphone calendar regarding historical range and the amount of data?

Also, from plowing through their forums:
    * Future events are always synchronised between the phone and the cloud.
    * Past events are user selectable synchronised for weeks, months or anytime on the phone.

    EDIT:
After digging around during some rainy days, it turns out the Windows Phone calendar automatically purging past and future events is a deliberate decision, older than my Nokia N8 phone:

  • TIPS for UPGRADING SUCCESSFULLY the FIRMWARE of your ROUTER

WARNING, before doing the UPGRADE, it is highly recommended to back-up the configurations of your router so that no matter what happened, you router configuration wouldn't be messed up and you can just automatically restore it (the firmware version upgraded to it will just retain).
    Here's how to:
    >open http://192.168.1.1
    >username: blank, password: admin
    >go to ADMINISTRATION TAB
    >under the managerment subtab or config management subtab, you will see BACK-UP & RESTORE
let me give you a very useful tips guys,
when updating the firmware of the router and prevent the firmware from bricking or being corrupted and get a very successful results you will need to set a static IP adress ( so you won't lose connection to the router when updating the firmware) and force the card to 10 half duplex (so your router won't reply unless all the packets when updating firmware has already ben set thoroughly to the router) of your PC prior to updating the firmware. then after the firmware, push the reset of your router for 10 sec. then redo the set-up.
You will also need to shut down the computers that are running wirelessly and disable antiviruses and firewalls that are running currently...
    here are the instructions:
ASSIGN A STATIC IP ADRESS ON YOUR PC:
go to your control panel [select classic view (click the option on the left side right below control panel title)]. select network connections...
under LAN or high speed internet, you will see local area connection. right click on it then select properties
under local area connection properties, look for internet protocol TCP/IP. high light it and click properties.
once on the internet protocol TCP/IP properties, set it to use the following IP adress.
IP adress: 192.168.1.5 ( it must be same range of your default gateway: 192.168.x.x)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (that is the default one. if not then enter the IP adress of your router, to check it, open command prompt, then type in "ipconfig" [no qoutes] the dafault gateway is equivalent to router's IP adress)
click ok and click the close button on the local area connectipn properties window (not the common "x" button when exiting out a window).
BRUTE FORCE THE CARD TO 10 Mbps half duplex mode
go to the same window (local area connection properties), once there, you will see a configure button. click it.
you will be lead to fast ethernet card 10/100 properties (depending on the type of etherenet card you have)
once there, click on the advance tab
under property, highlight link speed and duplex or media type or connection type (it varies, but these are one of those variations).
under value, select 10 Mbps/ Tx half mode/ duplex
click ok and click close on the local area connection window.
Then proceed with upgrading the firmware of your router. after updating the firmware of your router, reverse what you have done on your PC. by setting back the internet protocol TCP/IP to obtain an IP adress automatically and DNS server automatically (don't forget to click ok and close for the windows opened before opening a new one, okay?). then set back the speed and duplex mode back to auto-negotiation.
You should be able to get a successful results already after updating it. click on this link to reconfigure the router (but you must be online first to the modem since when the router is resetted, the configuration of your your router will be lost) http://www.linksysfix.com/check/HomePage/index.htm?CallerID=CC  to reconfigure the router

"a helping hand in a community makes the world a universe"

    Eh...
My routers GUI doesn't have the option to back up config so that doesn't help. Can't see why that would mater much anyway for home networking.
Also, I upgraded the firmware on my router multiple times and never had to force 10MB half duplex speeds. So, that doesn't help much either.

  • 975x PUE BIOS Upgrade Success

Everyone seems to post all the negatives of their BIOS upgrades. It can make you really worry....
I finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade from 7.0 to 7.2. Nothing was particularly unstable, but I plan on overclocking my E6400 soon and wanted the latest. I don't have a floppy and gave up trying to boot from CD.
    So, I:
    1) Loaded XP.
    2) Ran msconfig
    3) Disabled every app I did not need (NAV, HP manager, Yahoo Music, etc.)
    4) Rebooted.
    5) Shutdown Zone Alarm.
    6) Ran Live Update and flashed the BIOS from within XP.
Success. I personally had no issues and the system is stable. I've heard problems with flashing when your system is overclocked or unstable. My was neither.
I'm sure your mileage will vary and you need to make your own choice, but there is at least one MSI customer who didn't blow up their mobo. Now to overclock....

if it works leave it alone ... i flashed my bios three or four times allready ( betas and official ) when i had the Pentium d 805 of coarse i had the cold boot issue tho . but i allways had the original on stand by just incase ... i am using the 7.0 ( intial release ) and not having any issues with it ... you cant use live update to revert to old bios either use a floppy / cdrom or use winflash ( thats what live bios uses )

    Finally. I'm happy now

    What is your n80 variant?
Type *#0000# on your phone, whats the number after "NOKIA N80"
    example: (58.01)

    - Ira
    Mallika
    - John
    Kim
    Tom
BUT it's not really what I want to get.
I would rather get this result :
    - Ira
    Mallika
    - John
    Tom
    Kim
Do you see something wrong on my code?
    Could you help me?
    Regards,

Thank you for answering my question!
But, I can't sort the children collection.
there is a BUG on METALINK : BUG:11929722 - CHANGE API TO BE ABLE TO USE THE SORT FEATURE IN TREE TABLES USING ADF BINDING. (There is no default sort support in ChildPropertyTreeModel and RowKeyPropertyTreeModel. This is intended for performance reasons.)

  • Win7 Upgrade Success... Almost

Well, after my initial attempts to install all of the HP Win 7 updates and having numerous problems that many have posted I decided to restore my system to the point just after the upgrade.  I then went in and uninstalled all of the HP software that required updates and rebooted. I then manually installed each update and everything has worked perfectly since, with one exception.
For some reason, the HP Wireless Assistant says my WLAN is disabled, even though it is actually working.  I also have noticed that even though I use a wireless N router and the signal and connect speed say they are strong, my downloads are painfully slow.  I know the Wireless Assistant is an issue that others have had as well, but I can't find a solution that works for me. I am wondering if this can also be causing the speed issues.  I will next check out DSL Reports to check my speed.  Other than that although the upgrade process was a long and painful process it all is working now.

    Hello....
About 7 days ago i posted up in here some quieries about the BT INFINITY UPGRADE and wether i should do it or not co'z of conflicting information from Customer services e.t.c...
Well, Im pleased to report back that my internet speed HAS Increased, But not by Much!..>

    Now Im Pulling this!..
So, ive Kinda had a upgrade, Not the Magical 75mb/19mb i was Kinda Promised..but hey ho!, a speed upgrade is a speed Upgrade i spose!...
Finally, Above all Else, Its better than my previous supplier could EVER GIVE ME!....
    IN YOUR FACE VIRGIN MEDIA!

Not bad, once everyone has upgraded your speed may stablise. I would also suggest rebooting your modem and router in order early in the morning to see if you pick up a better sync speed/IP Profile and you may get a faster throughput.

  • Alternate upgrade successful with unlimited some reps are clueless

Called after the 5 arrived. A rep said I first need to activate on original line and go through a switch but I needed the basic phone. So off I went to get the basic phone from my mother-in-law. Got back home and called again. Got a rep who said she could do it without having to do anything with the basic phone.  No problem bit I did have to connect the 5 to my WiFi network to get into Apple.
My 5 is now on my line replacing a 4S and still unlimited. Since I did not have to activate the 5 on the basic phone, the data package for the basic phone upgrade was not activated.
There was almost no wait time to get a rep. Incredible.
If at first you get a clueless rep, hang up and try again.
I can now switch my 4S to my wife's line without the need to call.
    I must be dreaming.

You only lose your plan if you upgraded on your line with the unlimited plan since you didn't you didn't lose it but I am happy for you that you got what you wanted.

  • 3G Disk Upgrade Success

For those having trouble with their 3G iPod disks:
I successfully replaced my failing 20 GB drive with a new 30 GB drive in a 3G iPod. I used a Toshiba 30GB MK3006GAL which is a the same height, width & thickenss as the 20 GB. Cost was $90 + shipping and handling.
It has been two months and it works perfectly, though the new drive does drain the battery faster. Fortunately, I replaced the OEM battery with a Newer Tech one last year. I get about 10-12 hour of continus play, less on shuffle.
The process is basically the same as replacing the battery and takes 5-10 minutes.
I chose to repair rather than replace because it meant I could keep my accessories and put the money i saved toward a new 2G Nano and a Nike+ for working out.

Probably. There is no logical reason for it, but some users have reported issues in that series with all 7200 rpm drives and all 500 gig drives. For maximum compatibility, I recommend a 320 gig 5400 rpm drive. However, I also think there is about a 90% chance the drive you ask about would work fine.

  • 8GB upgrade success!

I got my $65 8GB (4GBx2) memory upgrade from OWC, it's like night and day on my MBP (I did the upgrade myself)
There is a sporadic issue with Firefox's memory management, and it uses 1GB+ very quickly... so when FF data was being moved to swapfile it would get painfully slow...
But the real reson I got 8GB was for my Photoshop, I am processing more pictures than I originally estimated, so there is a definite performance difference in PS on top of my already speedy SSD.
I say it was worth it!

People laughed at me when I said RAM was more important in speed than a SSD, but it is.
More RAM is the fastest thing one can do with a computer, in fact if one could load their entire SSD contents into RAM that would be the best.
Firefox is a bit twitchy with the RAM, so uninstall it's add-ons then FF, then reinstall FF and the add-ons and that seems to work well in fixing issues.
I guess your not going to be happy with this link, price has been coming down, it was twice that much two months ago, so in two more months it should be $300, then two more it should be about $150.
I feels a strike coming on in about 4 months.
