10.3 to 10.3 Home Sharing broke?

Rhetorical question, but interested if anyone can validate my results
All Computers have Quicktime 7.6.9
All computers are on the same subnet. (Mac Pro 100bastT; iMac, Macbook and AppleTV 2 on same wireless SSID)
Home Sharing worked flawlessly prior to 10.3.1.
I have a Mac Pro that was upgraded to iTunes 10.3.1 (Not sure if I did the 10.3 first) that hosts my library.
My iMac has iTunes 10.2.2 will play video and audio shared via Home Sharing
Apple TV Will play video and audio shared via Home Sharing
Macbook plays audio and displays a filmstrip like it's missing a codec.
I can share the drive and play the content in Quicktime on the Macbook fine.
I also checked sharing from the Macbook with the same results: AppleTV 2 O.K. Mac Pro plays audio and shows Filmstrip.
Hunting franticly for a way to downgrade iTunes on my Macbook! Any suggestions?

I'm seeing pretty much the same thing, though I can't confirm it's specific to 10.3.1 -- all my PCs have been upgraded already.  I'm pretty sure this all worked a few weeks ago, however, and your post makes me suspect it's the iTunes upgrade that broke things.
However, I don't get a filmstrip and audio -- I don't get anything at all other than iTunes displaying the title, total run-time, and some meta-data.
None of my ripped videos or home movies will play PC-to-PC via iTunes Home Sharing.  They play fine on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch via home sharing.
Here's another post that seems similar: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15406969#15406969.  In that post, the author mentioned their purchased videos play, but not their ripped ones.  I've confirmed that's the case for me, as well.  I can play a TV show and some music videos that were purchase from the iTunes store.  Do you have any purchased video you can try?
Note that all my PCs are running Windows (XP and 7).  So if it's a problem with iTunes 10.3.1, it's not platform-specific.

IO6 broke music home sharing on my IPAD 2, it still works on my PC's but my IPAD can no longer find the share

I have had this problem for about a month before iOS 6 was released and restarting the iPad was the only method I've found to make it reaquire the share. See if this temporarilly fixes the problem.
I have also noticed that this problem is not consistent between apps. I was unable to see the music share but I was still able to see the video share for example.

  • Home Sharing Useless on iPhone 4

Once again, I'm taking time away from doing other things that I would prefer to be doing right now to lodge another complaint about iOS. Once upon a time, home sharing worked on the iPhone. It is no longer functional. I don't know which itteration of iOS or iTunes broke the chain (I'm using iOS 6 and iTunes 10) but like so many wonderful features Apple introduces to its customer base, it went from something spectacular to something not even worth using. My music library contains thousands of songs. I am the first to admit that it's a massive catalog and would be surprised to see any mobile device handle it with no hang ups. Yet, when Apple introduced home sharing via iOS, they demonstrated it was up to the task and it worked with few hiccups. Today, after numerous redesigns and updates to iTunes and iOS, my Time Capsule networked music library appears to be only good for playing through my Mac. I have gone full circle from being tethered to my Mac and syncing my iPhone packed with space limited smart playlists via a cable to enjoying smart playlists in their entirety streamed to my iPhone anywhere in the house to, once again, being tethered to my Mac and not even bothering to sync music to my phone anymore (with the acception of my workout mix, which is parked locally on my phone). Why did this happen? I have no idea. Where iPhone once managed to connect quickly to my Mac and stream music anytime and anywhere via my home network, it now hangs on initial attempts to connect and, when it manages to connect after numerous attempts, it sometimes appears to load a limited number of songs, artists, and albums available in my library. It also places songs in playlists that should not be there and disconnects from my network regularly. Finally, if I don't always remember to switch back to my iPhone library when I finish playing from my home shared network, there is **** to pay the next time I go back to play my workout mix (to the point where nothing plays until I reset the phone).
iTunes Match is not the solution. I tried it. While I think it's a woderful idea in theory, it's horrible in execution, especially if you have a large library. I have a fast enough broadband and WIFI connection to know that it should work, but it simply doesn't work.
I'm really only here to complain. I have learned not to expect a response from Apple or timeline for fixing the issue. I just want Apple to know that it's alienating some of its most loyal customers. For years, I used your products to keep myself and my media organized. I don't want to change that and do not look forward to changing it. Still, I was a PC user once and I can certainly go back to being a PC user again. The inconvenience of attempting to organize my files on a PC will be offset by the time saved not having to deal with features you introduce that only work some of the time. I'm begging Apple to STOP BREAKING THINGS THAT ARE NOT BROKEN and to GO BACK AND FIX THE THINGS YOU BROKE. I would much prefer that you concentrate on fixing these glitches than introducing useless new UI features like different shades of color at the top of the iOS task bar. I don't know how long I will give for some of these issues to be resolved. It may depend on how many times I have to take time out of my day to lodge yet another complaint on this forum about your numerous software glitches. In the end, I WILL give up and move on. It's sad because, once upon a time, I grew to love your company and products.
Someday, I'll take another twenty minutes out of my day to lodge a complaint about how unreliable WIFI syncing has become since it was first introduced.

I just tried this with my iPhone 4 and it also didn't work.  This is how it failed:
      - Select "shared".
    - The "pie" start to grow, got to about 1/3, then crashed without
        bringing in the shared content.
    - After that, the library appeared in list, but I couldn't select
        it at all anymore.
Then I tried it with my iPad.  The pie got to the same point, sat
there for a long time, then completed and worked fine.
I did a hard reset of the phone and tried again, this time it
behaved like the iPad and worked fine.
Not sure whether it was the hard reset or whether sharing with
another device "woke something up", but in any event it works
now and I can't get it to break again.
Note, I only use sharing for movies, since I have Music Match
(which works *great* for me, even on 3G).
    Specs:
      Sharing: 2.7 GHz iMac i5, OS 10.6.8
      Clients: iPhone 4
                  4th gen iPad
Everything (including iTunes) patched to the latest.

  • Home sharing only available for a few minutes

    Hello everyone,
So I have a strange problem and I'll do my best to explain everything I've tried and my current setup.
Origonal setup (Was working then just completely stopped)
Windows Server 2008 (non R2) on an old computer (Currently offline)
System was Domain Controller, DNS Server, DHCP server and File server as well as running iTunes
New setup (Thought it would fix the issue)
Windows Server 2003 (fully updated and freshly installed for the sole purpose of iTunes home sharing)
Different system then the 2008 and only runs iTunes and AirVideo Server (not joined to domain, never was)
Linksys router handling DNS, DHCP again since I found out about the .local bonjour "bug" so I shutdown my Domain Controller to test
I have a Linksys smart Wi-FI router (my old router was dropping wireless connections around the same time so I figured it was the router) with dual band wireless (Cortana and Cortana-2.4). The 2003 ("MediaCentral") is connected via a known good ethernet cable directly to the router. My Macbook Pro (Late 2012) is connected wirelessly to Cortana. All devices (including my parents iPhone 4's) are authorized under my Apple ID and signed into home sharing.
I start iTunes on my macbook and my iPhone 5 sees the library no problem. I start iTunes on server and my macbook and phone both see it. The server, however, does not see my macbook's library. (which isn't really a big deal anyways). I can connect to the servers library and start watching a movie, heck I can watch the entire movie, faster forword, rewind pause all that stuff. As long as I don't disconnect it seems to work fine. The movie I currently have in the library is Transforms: Dark of the Moon bought on the iTunes store. My parents iPhone's never see the servers library. Our Apple TV see's it the same way my phone does and also sees my macbooks library.
Here's where things really go weird: If I didn't connect to the servers library within a few minutes of starting iTunes, it will disappear or fail to connect and then disappear (I guess the only reason it didn't disappear earlier was because of like a cache or something) and the only way to make it available again is by restarting iTunes on the server. Those first few minutes are like the golden time frame I guess you can call it. I don't know exactly how long until it stops working but I know it's not a long time. Probably less then five minutes.
So there's my situation, can anyone provide any guidence or suggestions to help me solve this?
I will be setting up a new domain controller under server 2012 but with a different domain name (matrix.dustinschreiber.com probably) as to avoid the .local bonjour problem.

  • Home Sharing on iPad gone wrong...please help!

    Hi there,
I recently found out about home sharing by a friend. So to save space on my iPad I simply download all my music and videos on my computer and then when I want to watch/listen I have the computer switched on and iTunes running and then it allows me to steam my content on my iPad - without downloading it and using up my 32GB of space. Its genius.
Except, I have downloaded many different series of a few TV Shows i.e. Suits, Geordie Shore and Revenge. But today when I click on the Home Sharing on my iPad everything is all jumbled up. There a mulitple pictures and wrong Season title and when I open to view the episodes its a completly different show.
For example when I open sharing - its shows Suits Season 3 (which doesn't exsist), the picture is the Season 2 picuture and when I open it - its Geordie Shore/Suits episodes all mixed up.
It's really hard to find what I am looking for and I am confused as to what I have done wrong. I tried refeshing it, turning it on/off and checking iTunes but it is not going back to normal.
Here's a pic to prove.... (bear in mind Suits season 3 doesn't exsist in the real world)

Ok, here was the rundown of my situation, and the solution:
I partitioned the disk through Bootcamp, tried to install Windows, and got to the point where it asks which partition to install on. It showed one with about 130GB, and that was ALL. So I backed out. Upon reboot, I tried to get back into the Mac OS by holding the Option key, and it wouldn't show me the option to go back - just the boot disk, and the Windows HDD (on which there was nothing yet, and which disappeared as an option on the next reboot).
In speaking to the support line, I formatted my hard drive re-installed, and we suspected the problem was due to the 10GB partition I created - apparently Windows XP needs 15GB to install itself. Maybe it just picked the wrong partition and screwed it up?
I tried the process again, same thing happened. I called the support line again, got someone different, and was informed of my real problem:
------I was using a Windows XP disk I had received with my PC when I bought it a few years ago (an OEM Windows XP disk)-------
Apparently you can't do that for some reason! I was told that my partitioning was ok, and it was the copy of Windows that was screwed up, and I would have to go buy a new version (which I'm not going to do).
Before trying Boot Camp, I had this exact copy of Windows installed through Parallels, and it worked fine - I just stupidly decided to make the switch to Boot Camp and all **** broke lose. Back to Parallels!

  • Home sharing stops working

    Hi,
For a while now Home Sharing has been broken for me.  It works when I first start iTunes but after a period of time I can no longer see the library through any of my devices, ATV, iPhone, iPad.  The amount of time before it stops working is inconsistent.  Sometimes it will work for an hour, other times it fails almost immediately.
I'm reasonably sure the probIem started when I went to iTunes 10.5 but can;t remember for sure.  Recently I updated to 10.5.1.42 and I had hoped that would fix it.  It hasn't.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Or do you know if it is possible to get an older version of iTunes?
    Many thanks.

  • Home sharing icon disappears on PC and Mac

In my house, we've been using home sharing between a PC (Windows 7), a Mac (OS X 10.8.2), and two iPad 2s with no issues for several months.  It was working as recently as 23 Dec 12. Now, two days later, it is not working on the PC or the Mac, but it is still working on the iPads.  When we turn home sharing on, the home sharing icon shows in the sidebar, but as soon as we put in the login and password and click "Done," the home sharing icon disappears.  The Mac and PC are linked up, as we can see the shared library in the "Finder" on the Mac, but it is inaccessible from iTunes.
We've tried all the trouble-shooting we can find online, including disabling the IPv6 on the PC, but still nothing.  Any suggestions  to get this working again would be appreciated!

How do you access the HD from both Mac and PC?
I do this but only by network not direct hookup.
If you are plugging the HD into one or the other I may have a solution for you.
I have all my photos in folders organized the way I want them.
Then I set iPhoto to NOT import the files when I add them.
Preferences > Advanced > make sure the selection of "Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto Library" is not selected.
That way the photos (files) will stay where you put them and the data in iPhoto will still organize and do it's thing on them.
And if you modify a photo with say Photoshop the new file seems to automatically update in the preview of iPhoto.
    Works great for me.
Here is what I have been doing...
    1. When I got my MAC, I copied all of my pictures from my PC onto a portable HD (WD passport).
    2. Then I attached it to the MAC and used iPhoto.
    3. I added new photos only to the passport HD and edited them in iPhoto.
What I was _planning / hoping_ to do is move those photos back to the PC for use in other applcations. But apparently the editted photos aren't on the HD anyway, but on the MAC (in the iPhoto library.)
But I understand that using a referenced library is not a great idea.
(Also, initially I did copy some photos into iPhoto and apparently having a both managed AND a referenced set of files is DOUBLY bad!)
So what I need to do now is fix whatever I "broke" and get a plan to go forward!

  • Home Sharing Stops Working After a Few Minutes

Since upgrading to 10.6.1.7, iTunes spontaneously stops Home Sharing after some minutes of playing back content via my Apple TV Gen 3. The Apple TV which had just been in the middle of playing content, reverts back to the home screen with a message about Home Sharing at the top. If I then click on Computers, it informs me that I should turn on Home Sharing in iTunes. It is already turned on as I was just in the middle of using it. The computer and the Apple TV are plugged into the same switch. The only work-around that I've found is to exit the iTunes application an restart it each time that it fails every few minutes. This makes watching content incredibly exasperating. Are there any better work-arounds with more longevity? This problem effectively makes the Apple TV a worthless device, and I may be returning it soon.

  • ATV3 drops Home Sharing

    Hello,
Today I received my ATV3.  Unplugged my ATV2, power and HDMI, and plugged in the ATV3.  Everything worked great for several hours, then all of a sudden, home sharing disappeared.  I have tried closing out of my iTunes, turning home sharing off and on again - on my iMac.  In addition, I have turned off and turned on home sharing on ATV3, and even restarted (not reset) ATV3, and still cannot get home sharing to come back.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How can a family with multiple existing accounts use Home Sharing?

I'd like to use the new Home Sharing feature, but it appears to be restricted to families in which all of the family members share a single user account.
We already have separate accounts for each family member. Is there some way for us to use Home Sharing without abandoning most of our existing accounts, along with all of the purchases made by those accounts? I don't think anyone in this situation would be willing to do that.

Eh. I am not too sure since I have not messed with it much but I do have a great deal of experience with multiple accounts. Each computer can be authorized for multiple accounts. As can iPods. iPods can sync songs/videos/apps from multiple accounts as long as the computer is authorized with them. What I have set up here, is I buy my stuff I want, my parents buy what they want and so do my brothers. When my bro gets something I want I just move it to my computer. That way all our accounts are separate, but if there is something I want I can get it. Also, since the music no longer has DRM, it won't matter. It will play on any computer. What you should see is if you can just do the shared library with multiple accounts. Then if you don't have videos or such, you can get apps or music. Hope this helps!

  • ITunes/Music Home sharing does not work on my iPad Air

No matter what I do I cannot use Music.app on my iPad Air to play music from my iTunes Library with Home-Sharing switched on. The Library name correctly appears in the Music.app source list after the loading symbol takes an age to complete. When it appears to have connected to the Library on my Mac, contents of my Library are shown in the app but I cannot play anything. If I select an albumn and press Play the Music.app merely cycles rapidly through all the track titles of the Album and then stops. Nothing plays. I've tried dozens of times to get this to work, even rebuilding my iTunes Library. Nothing seems to cure the problem. I can connect and play via Plex which is just plain daft seeing Apple designed all the software/hardware but they, themselves, cannot correctly code for this basic functionality.
Also, not all Album cover artwork is displayed correctly.
It seems many of the things I bought the iPad for are non-functional and the tablet is virtually useless. I can't beleive Apple would produce software and hardware which is specifically made to work harmoniously but obviously doesn't.
    Any help, here, please?
I'm also having problems with Bluetooth connecting to my Mac Pro (2008)... Namly, it will not.

  • How do I use Home Sharing to share apps between multiple Apple ID accounts on differect PCs in the same house?

I purchased an app called "Where's My Water?" on my iTunes account. My iTunes account and iTunes library is set up on my desktop PC. Anyway, my mom wanted the app. She has her iTunes account and library set up on our laptop PC. So, I connected both my desktop and her laptop via Home Sharing by entering my account information on both computer's Home Sharing screens. The app was transferred from my library to her library. When I synced her iPod to her PC, it did not move the app to the iPod. So, I figured I would just manually download it off the app store on her iPod and she wouldn't get charged $0.99 because the app was already in her iTunes library. It turns out when I bought the app on her iPod, it actually took out money from her account. I want to know what went wrong. Why didn't the Home Sharing thing work so she could get the app I bought without having to buy it herself?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"
