10.3 using afp to connect to windows 2000 share

Here is my problem, I have two machines running 10.3 when I click on go - connect to server and enter my server that I want to connect to it tells me it could not connect to the server becuase the username or password is incorrect. What file do I need to delete to reset the password someone has saved?

You need to set up at least one shared folder on the Windows side. See the following for additional help:

  • Using Mac Office connecting to win 2000 share problems with links in Excel.

I open up an excel document from a win 2000 server using AFP and click on a link and it does not work.
It works using a windows xp pro client and excel.
However, the Mac excel software seems to enterpret the link differently.
    Any thoughts out there?
    ~EJXPDOCS

I think originally Excel uses a date epoch based on January 0 1900 whereas Apple OS uses January 1 1904. There is an option in excel to use the 1904 epoch format but once saved as such you can't return to the Microsoft favoured 1900 format...
When importing into Numbers the date epoch is automatically changed to suit Appe's preferred format (1904). This does not present any particular problem for complete imports, it only fouls up when you try copy/pasting individual dates from one type of worksheet into the other type as you are trying to do.
I suggest you try importing complete sheets and then do the merging within Numbers.

  • Alias connected to Windows 2000 network share

Using a Mac (10.3.9) I can connect to a Windows 2000 share. I then create an Alias of the share so I don't have to go through the login every time. Unfortunately the Alias 'forgets' and asks for the location of the server or gives me the option to delete it.
This doesn't happen to other macs so I guess it must be a preference file or something like that on the Mac.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Paul

I found a work around for this in another thread. Thank you gnaegi.
    Below is what was posted...
Open Terminal.app from /Applications/Utilities and then enther the following:
mkdir myshare #(do this only the first time)
    mount -t smbfs //[email protected]/sharename myshare
When you work this way you should unmount the share before you log out, shutdown or put the computer to sleep. To do this, open the Termina.app and enter:
    umount myshare
The mounted share is now in your home.

  • Unable to Connect to Windows File Shares

Steps I take to attempt to connect to a Windows File Share within the office. Being relatively new to the Mac, I am curious on why I am not able to connect to Windows File Shares.
    1. Command-K
    2. Server Address: smb://[server-hostname]/[sharename]
    3. Click Connect
    4. Connecting To Server..... (takes a short amount of time)
    5. SMB/CIFS File System Authentication
    - I then enter the domain, username and password
    6. Click OK
    7. Error: Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct.
What gives? I have confirmed and validated server hostname, sharename, appropriate persmissions for windows account, etc. I have tried IP Address instead of hostname, same outcome.
    Any Ideas?

  • How do I connect a Windows 2000 PC desktop to my home network (laptop mac)

    Hi,
Sorry to be such a novice. I have created a wireless network with an airport express. My Macintosh laptop can connect to it without a problem and can access the internet. Next step is I want to connect my desktop PC (running Windows 2000) so that it can also connect to the internet using the wireless connection.
Do I need special equipment so the desktop can find the airport express network? How do I set it up on the PC?
Also - does anyone know the easiest way to connect a TIVO to the home network as well?
    Thanks for any guidance!
    -Lori

Your PC needs to have the ability to join a 802.11b/g compatible network. If it doesn't have that hardware ability, you will need to add a wireless card or wireless adapter.

  • Error -36 connecting to Windows 2000 Server

I'm trying to connect to a windows 2000 server that appears in my Network browser but I can't authenticate using the Network browser or via smb://.
I have been able to connect in the past no problem and I can login to the server on another machine using my user and password.
    I get two errors:
If I go via Network browser I can click and get a username and password dialog box. When I enter my details and hit return I get - 'The alias (servername) could not be opened because the original could not be found'
If I go via Connect to Server i get a "can't connect to server blah blah (-36 error)" and I can cancel or try again.
I've searched high and low for a solution but can't find anything like this.
I suspect I need to trash some preference or other, like you could do in OS9, but I have no idea where to start with OS X.
    Can anyone help?

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    See the following article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301580
Basically the steps are as follows:
Follow the steps below to configure your computer to use plain text passwords to make SMB/CIFS connections when the specified Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server does not support encrypted passwords. (You must be an administrator to do these steps.)
Make sure that you are not currently connected to any Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers and that you do not have any Samba or Windows-related error messages open.
    Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
At the prompt, type: sudo pico /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
Enter your password when prompted, then press Return again.
You should see an empty file and a "New File" notice at the bottom of the pico window. If you do not see the "New File" notice, this file already exists.
Enter the following into the file so that it appears as follows:
    [default]
    minauth=none
Save the file (press Control-O), press Return, then exit pico (Control-X).
    Type: sudo chmod a+r /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
    Restart your computer.

  • Connection to windows DFS Shares

Can OS X 10.6 connect to a DFSR share and access files on a windows 2008 R2 server?
I see people using DAVE and ExtemeZ-IP for DFS but i also see people are able to connect with 10.6. Also if a user can't access the namespace dfs share, but could access the server dfs share directly that might be ok.
I figured you server guys would know more than the workstation forum browsers.
My goal is to have a physical win2k8r2 server in 2 office locations connected via VPN and be able to have users in both locations connect to a single share that is always in sync. DFSR seems to be the only good solution for this, but all the client machines are Mac's and we also have an Xserve in 1 location and an new mac mini as a OD replica in the other location.

    g3sys,
How many Macs are you talking about? You are most likely going to need to buy a solution one way or the other, but the number of Macs that you need to support may be the determining factor.
Group Logic's ExtremeZ-IP server pricing is based on the number of Macs you are going to have connecting, and the DFS serving capability is an additional fee (based on Group Logic's pricing page).
Thursby's DAVE is a per-client cost, but includes DFS support built-in.
I usually recommend DAVE to my clients, since you don't have to change the Windows server, and DFS is built in, so it can be more cost effective. Group Logic may be better for hundreds or thousands of Macs, but I don't know what their pricing is in those cases.
    Just my $.02

  • Connection to Windows Network Shares

After installing 10.5 I lost my automatic (Active Directory Domain mapping upon logon) and manual connection to some of our critical Windows network shares. All worked fine under 10.4. All connection attempts fail and report in a dialog:
    Connection failed
There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
Manual connections then report in a dialog:
    Connecting to Server
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in
"cifs://netstore2.colgate.edu/student6" could not be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
Some of our servers connect fine but two of our most important servers do not. I haven't found a clear description of this in Apple support forums (but may have missed it in the flood of problems reported).
I have something that works for me based on something I read on the web (perhaps in one of the threads on http://www.macwindows.com/leopard.html but I can't find it now).
Our automatic mappings and my initial manual attempts use the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for our server - netstore1.colgate.edu. Replacing this with netstore1 works! I have no idea why (Something to do with WINS? Apple engineers?) but I'm using it for myself and others.
    That is:
    cifs://netstore1.colgate.edu/employee2/dwheeler fails (as does smb://...)
    while
    cifs://netstore1/employee2/dwheeler works (as does smb://...)
I just duplicated this failure/success using mount_smbfs, where the failure looks like:
    $ mount_smbfs //[email protected]/employee2/wheelerda ~/temp
mount_smbfs: server connection failed: Software caused connection abort
    and
    $ mount_smbfs //dwheeler@netstore1/employee2/wheelerda ~/temp
    simply works.
Hopefully this will help someone while Apple fixes the problem (they can probably blame Microsoft, but remember that this all worked fine in 10.4).

    Please make the following changes
On the Server whose map drives you don't see
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
    Value: autodisconnect
    Data type : REG_DWORD
    Value: ffff (Hex)
    On windows 7 client
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
    Value Name: KeepConn
    Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 65535 (dec value in seconds)

  • Yet Another Help! Connecting to Windows 2000

Hello all, I see this is a popular topic. Got the latest 60 gig ipod and my Windows 2000 SP4 with the latest ipod updater and itunes. All of this and the program simply won't recognize my ipod. Windows sees it as a generic usb harddrive and that's it. ipod won't see it nor itunes doesn't. Thought it might be the ipod but I plugged it into my XP laptop and it works seamless. Any hope for Windows 2000 users? I already did the support page process but it didn't provide any help
    Any help would be great
    thanks

  • Using IPSec to connect from Windows 2012 to a Sonicwall

In order to establish an IPSec connect from a Windows 2012 Server to a SonicWall, you must first connect to the sonic wall via L2TP or PPTP?
Can someone confirm this is correct?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
As per my research, generally when we are implementing IPsec connection we use PPTP as a connection method. PPTP, L2TP, and SSTP depend heavily on the features originally specified for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). PPP was designed to send data across dial-up
or dedicated point-to-point connections. For IP, PPP encapsulates IP packets within PPP frames and then transmits the encapsulated PPP-packets across a point-to-point link. PPP was originally defined as the protocol to use between a dial-up client and a network
    access server.

  • Using VPN to connect to Windows XP server running Oracle Database

Trying to connect to a hotel PMS system (Micros Opera) through my mac. The system runs through internet explorer on PC and is based on an Oracle Database. The DB stores both the data and application. I have it set up and working via VPN in Parallels, but still have not been able to make it work on the mac side. All I needed to do in Parallels was add the VPN connection, direct IE to http://operettaserver and everything worked perfectly.
I have a feeling it has something to do either with browser compatibility or ports. On windows, it runs best in IE, but will load in Firefox. Can't get it to load in Firefox or Safari on the Mac side (even when I plug the computer directly into the network). The VPN connection seems to be OK on the Mac -- when i type the local IP it redirects to the server, but the login page does not open. I can, however, access shared folders.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be the issue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    JK

It looks like a file transfer protocol issue here. Which is the OS on the server? Is it Mac or Windows.

  • Connect to Windows Server shares

We have recently purchased two MacBook carts. I'm trying to connect to home directories on a Windows Server from Go/Connect to Server. When I enter the SMB path, I get "Failed to Mount Volume". I can see the root level share but not drill down any further. Don't know if this the correct forum but I figured I would start here.

For some reason I was able to connect by clicking Start->My Network Places->Add New Network Connection
I selected the second option to add by IP, put in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\share point it asked for a username and password then connected. Then when I went to another XP machine it let me go to Run //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and it asked for a username and password then showed my share points where I was able to right click and add them as network drives. It works now.
    Cheers

  • Leo cannot connect to WIN 2000 SP4 Server via AFP!

    Dear folks,
I set up an PowerMac G4 MDD as a first Leopard-Test Machine for our production environment. Mac OS X 10.5 was installed on a clean HD without any old stuff on it.
My serious problem ist that this Mac cannot establish a connection to a WIN2000 Server (SP 4) via AFP.
I am able to enter cmd-K, server IP, and in the following dialogue login and password.
Instead of showing the available shares I get an error -41 (unknown error) an should contact the server admin.
Interestingly, I have absolutely no probs to connect via AFP to another Win2000 machine with SP 2 installed.
Also I tried several manipulations on the appleshare plist file I found here and in other forums. With no luck.
I have no idea anymore what else to try.
With Tiger and Panther everything is fine.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Regards,
    Stefan

I have not been able to reproduce error -41, but I have been able to reproduce a failure to connect on Windows 2000 SP4.
On the windows server, make sure you are using either 'Microsoft Only', 'Apple Encrypted', or 'Apple Encrypted or Microsoft'.
You can check this by right clicking on 'My Computer', selecting 'Manage', right clicking on 'Shared Folders' under 'System Tools' and selecting 'Configure File Server for Macintosh'. It will be on that first screen that comes up.
If you just MUST use unencrypted passwords, or can't access the NT server, you can set the following and it seems to work fine.
Err:~ eb$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afpcleartextwarn" -bool YES
Err:~ eb$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afpcleartextallow" -bool YES
