10.4.1 hangs after startup - 64-bit Win7
I tried reinstalling iTunes as my CDs were not showing up in iTunes. The system is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Now iTunes hangs at startup . . . all I see is the beginning of a translucent window. I've uninstalled, reboot, reinstalled many times.
Bump. Also an update: I found out that iTunes doesn't hang all the time when I tell it to close, only when I have the visualizer going, not in full screen mode. Hope that might help anything.
Thanks,
Carter

I open itunes, which takes its time opening, then once it is fully open it will hang at between 50-100% CPU usage for at least 15 minutes before I can do anything. I would like to know if there is anything I can to to alleviate this.
This is a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit, the computer has 3gigs of ram, a Dual Core Xeon 3.0ghz processor, and the library is about 260gb and is being shared from a samba share from linux over gigabit. However there are no problems with using the Zune player over the network so it is not a network latency problem.I did two things which resolved this problem.
1. went to device manager and noted an error on the Apple USB driver.
Fixed by reinstalling it from c:/program files/common files/apple
It took a couple of tries but eventually it resolved.
2. Go into Control Panel / Programs and then right-click on Bonjour and select repair.
After that it worked. -
Managed server hangs after startup
For some reason we're unable to start one of our managed servers in one of our clusters.
After starting up, it takes about ten secons before it hangs.
The last message in the output logs is:
IIOP subsystem enabled
What could be going on? And how can we solve this?
We've already tried stuff like restarting nodemanager and adminserver, and we even rebooted the box.Landro,
I had the same issue. I followed what was done here:
http://forums.bea.com/bea/message.jspa?messageID=300001317&tstart=0
and it worked. For me I believe it was an issue connecting to an Active Directory system.

Patch#1411970
Patch#1332640

problem is, I can't find the patches on metalink either in the old patch database or hte new one.
can somebody please point me to the patches?

Hi,
A WebLogic 10.3.2.0 server is hanging at startup. There are no error messages. The last command in the startup window is:
"The server log file <log file dest> is opened. All server side log events will be written to this file."
I think the next line should be:
"Security initializing using security realm realm."
Any ideas on what could be the issue? For instance what resources should be accessed at that point of time? There is sufficient space left on the (virtual machine) disk. The VM configured with 8GB memory. Could it be performance related still?
Following is written to the log file:

[SOLVED*] system hangs at startup after grub screen
My system is hanged after the grub window. I choose Archlinux, like always, apparently starts to boot and the next screen is frozen. It says:
/dev/sda2: recovering journal
/dev/sda2: clean ....
systemd-fsck[208]: /dev/sda1: recovering transactions file
systemd-fsck[208]: /dev/sda1: clean ...
systemd-fsck[221]: /dev/sda4: recovering transactions file
systemd-fsck[221]: /dev/sda4: clean ...
And that's it. It frozes in this point. I didn't make any update since 3 days ago. Yesterday the computer runs well.
I tried to enter into Fallback mode, but I get to the same point.
Any suggestions?
Solved partially: I connected a second screen this morning. When I disconnect it, the system starts. Now I have to solve how to add a second screen because when I add it once the system is running, it hangs.

Thats more like you found a work around and is far from being solved

[SOLVED] System randomly hangs shortly after startup
First of all: hi everyone, as of last weekend I am a brand new Arch user
My problem: I installed Arch on Friday and had no problems with it all weekend, but on Tuesday the whole system suddenly started freezing within a few minutes of being switched on. My cursor stopped blinking, mpd output stopped, and nothing would respond. It didn't matter what I was doing at the time (mostly I wasn't doing anything, or was typing a command). It didn't matter if X was running, or what daemons were running (I disabled all of them eventually). Sometimes I hadn't even logged in yet (although the fault never occurred before agetty popped up). The timing was unpredictable but it always happened within a few minutes of system startup. I could see nothing in the output of dmesg, or in any system logs, that would indicate any problems. The fact that nothing had changed over the weekend, coupled with the unpredictable timing of the fault occurrence, led me to assume it was a hardware fault. However, I had three other operating systems on the same hardware and hard drive (Gentoo, Debian and Windows XP) which all were unaffected. I did an fsck on the Arch partition but there were no problems found, and the smartmontools didn't show any cause for concern either.
Eager to get past the problem, I reinstalled Arch on the same partition, erasing everything I did over the weekend. Freshly installed, with nothing installed besides the base and base-devel packages, Arch still hung just after startup even before I'd finished creating my user account. (Interestingly, the installer never suffered from the same fault.) Still thinking it could be a bad sector or something, I installed Arch on first the Debian, then the Windows partition (who needs either of those, right? ) but neither gave me a problem-free system.
Essentially my problem is this: Arch will no longer work when it is installed or run on the exact hardware that I installed and ran it on over the weekend, even though other distros can run quite happily on the same hardware! Does anybody have any ideas? I've been bitten by the bug now and don't feel right going back to Gentoo!

by installing using the old packages on the cd rather than downloading the new ones, i was able to get a working system again. however when i did a pacman -Syu the problem returned. through trial and error i found that the problem package is kernel26 (or the modules). for whatever reason, i'm having to stay with 2.6.30 for now. is this a bug with the kernel26 package? -
Firefox 31 hangs on startup with no error messages
Simply put, Firefox hangs right on startup. I see it loading the two generic tabs and then the wheel spins and then it says 'Not Responding' on the top of the window. I have to force close it each and every time, and I've also tried the following solutions in no particular order to alleviate the issue:
1) Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes last night for any possible infections. Reported back with nothing.
2) Booted my laptop up in Safe Mode (with networking) and still couldn't get it to operate.
3) Performed several clean uninstalls and re-installations which also included clearing out the profiles altogether and then trying to open it again, nothing.
4) Booted up Firefox by holding down the shift key and resetted it to its default settings and then tried firing it up again. Nothing.
5) Attempted booting up FF in Safe Mode with the shift key, nothing.
6) Created a new profile and tried booting FF, nothing.
7) Read this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hyper-Threading about Hyper-Threading and followed the instructions which got it to operate, but I can't access the toolbar or the option menus. When I click on options Firefox closes with no error messages. I have a feeling this isn't the issue at hand but I figure I'd try it and at least I can get it to fully load and not hang.
8) Deleted all Firefox extensions and Plug-ins, nothing.
9) Enabled Firefox through firewall and antivirus settings, nothing.
10) Updated my BIOS firmware as suggested in #7, nothing.
I've done almost 10 different things and I still can't figure out why Firefox keeps hanging on startup. I've looked into Youtube videos for tutorials and others posted about the Java crashing that was happening in an earlier version of FF. Since its not crashing, I'm unable to look into the crash logs and pinpoint a crash number or anything because it just freezes and when I click to close it I get a message saying: 'Close program' or 'Wait for it to respond.'
I'm running a 64 bit Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion g6-1c44wm Notebook PC
Microprocessor 2.10 GHz Intel Pentium Processor B950
Microprocessor Cache 2MB L3 Cache
Memory 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 DIMM)
Memory Max Maximum supported = 8GB
Video Graphics Intel HD Graphics
Video Memory Up to 1696MB
Hard Drive 500GB 5400RPM)
I'm trying to be specific as possible! Please help! I'm at the end of my rope here!Try to completely uninstall firefox, that means to '''delete''' the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory#Windows Installation directory] located for your 64bit in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ , also, '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox and '''if exist''', '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
then download and install again a new full installer from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
disable firewall and antivirus and antispyware for a little bit, and run firefox. any luck ?
thank you -
Hello,
After some difficulty I got Windows 7 installed on my Mac Pro. It worked until I installed Boot Camp off the Mac OS X Snow Leopard install DVD. Boot Camp installed, but once I rebooted, about 20-30 seconds after reboot I get a Blue Screen error which says something about a cache management error. It doesn't stay up long so I haven't had a lot of time to study it. On reboot the error report doesn't give a whole lot of info, calls the error "Bluescreen", but it did reference a couple files, I can try to copy them down if it's important (they were long and I only get a few seconds to look at them).
I even tried not logging in and just leaving it after startup, same result.
It's a totally fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate on a dedicated 500GB hard drive. The only thing I've installed is Boot Camp. I've tried wiping it out and re-installing everything, same results. The first time I installed no Windows updates prior to Boot Camp, the second time I installed all available Windows updates first. Same results.
I'm not sure what could be causing this- it seems like a driver issue of some kind maybe, but it seems like if Boot Camp were inherently problematic with this hardware more people would be having this problem. I can't really think of any other factors that could be interfering... it sure seems like a conflict between boot camp and Windows 7, but I don't see how that should be the case. Despite all the trouble I've been having with this I'm normally a pretty advanced user, so I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything wrong in the install process (I've done it at my work lots of times), but I know a lot more about macs than Windows.
My system:
Mac Pro 2.8 Ghz 8-core, early 2008 model
Memory: 10GB- 2x1GB stock from Apple, 4x2GB from Otherworldcomputing.com
Hard Drive: 2x1TB Western Digital in a striping raid, 500GB Seagate (the Windows drive), 1TB Western Digital.
Mac OS: 10.6.2 fully updated
I had the release candidate running for several days off this same drive with no issues back around when it came out (I erased it a while ago), and I don't think I've changed my hardware since then... although boot camp has been updated since. Perhaps somewhat ironically, Windows 7 was officially unsupported when I had the RC running, and now it's officially supported.
I'd appreciate any input, although the_hatter has already helped me out quite a bit... it seems like Windows really doesn't want to install for me! Just let me know if any more information is required.
Message was edited by: aruffell2I have exactly the same problem, down to the last detail, except that I got there by a different route.
My history is that I initially installed Windows 7 x64 Home Premium on my 2006 Mac Pro using an EFI install disk I created using the methods detailed elsewhere in this forum. Installed Boot Camp 3.0 from the SL disk then updated to 3.1. Then did Upgrade Anytime to Ultimate. Everything worked wonderfully for three months.
Then I created some striped raid volumes involving three of the five HDs in my machine using SoftRaid. My boot drive (unlike you?) is not raid. Windows 7 Ultimate continued to work perfectly.
Then I wanted to move the Windows 7 partition to a different physical HD, by restoring a Paragon Image (which I have successfully done on my MacBook Pro previously). First oddness was that Boot Camp Assistant would not create a Boot Camp partition of the whole disk, as I wanted, it would only create a second partition, even with the all the raided HDs removed from the machine and uninstalling the Softraid driver. Odd? I put the HDs and driver back in and restored the Windows 7 image to the Boot Camp partition.
This had the same behaviour you described crashed to the Cache Manager blue screen after 20 seconds. It would boot stably in safe mode so I was able to run chkdsk but it didn't fix it.
Then I repeated the whole exercise but started with a restored Vista 32 bit, and reinstalled Windows 7 X64 as a fresh install, (had to start with Vista as my Windows 7 license is an upgrade), then did the Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate, then applied Boot Camp 3.0 from the SL disk. At this point it was completely stable. Then I did Boot Camp 3.1 via ASU and got the Cache_Manager blue screen exactly as before.
Can't find anything helpful with Google about Cache_Manager crashes except the suggestion that there is some kind of massive memory leak going on during the 20 seconds before it crashes.
I have now repeated the process back to Vista 32 bit which is completely stable, and plan to try again, but this time will install BC 3.0 and 3.1 at the Home Premium stage, which is when they were applied in the very original sequence. Also I can use my Home Premium install disk to try a repair install if problems occur again.
I am only trying to get back to a state which previously worked fine, ie with Raid present, Windows 7 x64 and BC 3.1. It should be possible. I know you can't have a Boot Camp partition on a raid array, but my experience is that it was previously OK on a partition on a non raid volume, even with raid elsewhere in the machine.
Don't think I have helped you at all, but it has sure helped me to write it down! Since you posted nearly four weeks ago you may have solved it anyway. In which case I would like to hear from you! -
10.7.4 Hanging at Startup
I don't often find the need for these forums, but I've got a tough one this time. Here's my issue:
I was recently using my late 2008 MBP (6 Gig RAM, 500 Gig HD) without issue as I have done for the last several years. The other night, I was running my DJ software (Traktor) which worked fine all night. I ended the night and shut the lid on my MBP, the next day, Traktor was still shutting down (as it does on occasion). I gave it a few minutes, but it seemed to have crashed so I force quit the program. Things seemed to be running slow so I restarted. When I did, my system hung on startup at the gray Apple screen with the spinning wheel. After many days and many, many troubleshooting routines, I'm STILL unable to make this go away permanently. Here's what I've tried:
(I've always been able to boot in Safe Boot mode, so that's how I've been doing maintenence)
Initially, I thought this was probably related to my DJ software so I uninstalled it (including manually uninstalling all extensions and preferences).
That didn't work so I started cleaning out my system (I haven't done a fresh install of OSX since like 2005, so it was probably time anyways). Still, no luck.
I reinstalled 10.7.4. Success, but only for the initial startup. A subsequent reboot and I'm back at the stalled startup.
Try removing more stuff from the system to no avail.
Wipe hard drive completely, reinstall OS X. WORKS!
So, I start migrating things back over from my backup (I used CCC instead of TM because I wasn't sure of the integrity of my TM backup). Things seem to be going OK.
Reinstall Messages beta and restart. NOOOOOO. Back hanging at same place.
I figure it has something to do with Messages, so I Uninstall the Messages beta. Still hanging at startup.
Getting really frustrated now.
Time to try a blast from the past: Applejack. Yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 10.7, but low and behold, cleaning caches gets me back in business--but only for one reboot. Then I'm back at a stalled startup until I clean the caches again (and it's the system cache, not the user cache).
I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM and then immediately cleaning the system caches. That again gives me one good restart then back to the hanging startup. And, that's where I'm at now.
I'm absolutely stuck. I literally have not experienced this kind of issue in at least five years, so I could really use a hand on this one. The last log entry that I'm getting on the stalled startup is this:
6/28/12 11:25:39.364 PM ntpd: proto: precision = 1.000 usec
Then it just hangs forever. The spinning progress wheel just freezes. I left it sitting overnight at that screen, so I'm 100% sure that it's not going anywhere.
I have a couple of theories on what the issues could be, but at this point, I'm totally open to suggestions. From what I can tell (from watching the logs over the course of several (seems like) hundred startups), it seems like this is about the point in the startup where iCloud is trying to check my user credentials. That said, I could be totally off base with that. Also, although the preceeding log entry seems to come after this on occasion, I'm NOT seeing this entry on any of the startups that hang:
6/28/12 11:25:38.000 PM kernel: NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered.
Seems to me that this could be an issue too since that's obviously associated with the graphics hardware.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated!Something you haven't mentioned is whether you have tried booting
from your clone and having the same issues. Did you try that?
If it boots and works fine from the clone, then there could be
a corrupted file trying to be accessed at boot (possible bad sector)
on the internal drive or it could be that the drive is starting to
give out. -
InDesign CS5.5 hangs on startup (Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
Newly installed CS5.5 from disc + online update. InDesign hangs shortly after startup.
Found some suggestions in this thread on CS5:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3116186
Fixed by deleting the SING datastore folder, as per Adobe support document, which doesn't yet say it applies to CS5.5.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408816.html
Hope this helps someone.InDesign CS5.5 currently crashes on launch when launching from the dock or the app direct, throwing up a crash report (http://pastebin.com/8dNiiSWu).
This crash is from opening a Flash file (SWF) inside the PMWelcomeScreen plugin. You can try moving Plug-Ins/PMPack/PMWelcomeScreen.InDesignPlugin out of the plugins folder, as a workaround only. You won't get the Welcome Screen, but that's perhaps a small price to pay. Not sure which flash file it is opening and failing on. Are you behind a firewall?
If launching from a document, InDesign launches, throws up a crash report, but you can still work on the document. Can still print/pdf but on closing another crash report is thrown up.
Sorry, this doesn't really make sense. If InDesign crashes, you cannot continue to work in it. Perhaps you are getting confused by previous crash reporter dialog windows that you have not dismissed or submitted so were still hanging around. Also, sometimes they take quite a while to pop up -- not always contemporaneous with the crash. -
Acrobat Reader 9.1.x freezes after startup
Hello,
Our Acrobat Reader is having problems on some machines during startup that it completly freezes after startup.
I've traced this with procmon and have seens that a certain file "sharedEvents" is trying to to somthing buth it is hanging on
lock - unlock. Killing All process of Acrobat Reader and deleting this file and then re-starting the program isn't helping because it keeps 0 kb and the mentioned behaviour is trying to do something with this file.
the file can be found in %appdata%\adobe\acrobat\9.0
Our profile's is redirected , it is working for most of the users but some users are having this problem.
Can anybody tell me what Acrobat Reader is doing with this file and is there a work around to initialize everything back again so the
user can startup the program normally so it is not freezing after startup without having to remove and install it back again ?
Best regards,
BertHi,
The problem I'm having is a problem on the journal file. After some more investigating it look that the problem can be related to oplocks since we have enbaled oplocks on our server (were the file is placed trough folder redirection). We will check this ...
I've already disabled oplocks on client side and then everything is working however we are using Vista in combination with offline files and if you disbale oplocks then offline files will not work so we are looking a bith further to see what we can do on server side ... to be continued ...
Best regards,

Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
