10.4.10 and secondary account

Hi,
Like many people, 10.4.10 has screwed up my MacBook Pro (though works fine on my PPC Mac Mini).
I didn't interrupt the installation so did what was asked but it still messed it up.
I tried repairing disk permisions, restarting many times, installed the Combo update, cleaned the cache ... all to no avail.
But the weird thing is, it seems to work ok on one account (where I originally installed the update), and on the other account it constantly asks for permission to use the previous keychain. Each accept (Mail asks about 10 times) takes several minutes - and it is maybe 30-60 minutes torture before the Mac becomes usable again. Close Mail and restart it and ... it asks the same questions again ... aagghh!!!
Is there any logical reason why it could work on one account and not the other? (both are admin accounts).
(Next step is to try the Archive/Install to backup to 10.4.9. But thanks Apple, I already lost a day trying to make my laptop usable again).
MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Is there any logical reason why it could work on one account and not the other? (both are admin accounts).
Yes. Corruption or conflict, usually WRT to preferences. Two ways to attack the problem.
1. Run Preferential Treatment and verify/repair user and system preferences. If that doesn't do the trick, delete the flaky account, selecting to save the data—creates a disk image of the entire account in /Users/Deleted Users. Recreate the account, using the same username/password combo, log into it, mount the saved image, and slowly transfer everything back to their appropriate places, except the Preferences folder. Just copy it to the Desktop, open it, duplicate the new Preverences folder, and slowly move a few plist files into the new one, log out and back in, until you resolve the conflict. Note that you may have to reset some preferences.
2. Run Preferential Treatment and verify/repair user and system preferences. If that doesn't do the trick, move the Preferences folder to the Desktop, log out and back in, then do the replacement trick. Effectively, that's what Conflict Catcher did in the pre-OS X days.

  • Safari and Secondary accounts

I have set up a separate account o for my son so I can apply Parental Controls.
He has access to everything but the **** sites AND FACEBOOK.
Safari works fine for everything else but when he tries to log onto Facebook he gets the message "Safari can not find the server .... ".
No, it is not general. I can connect from my account both to his facebook site and mine.
Anyone got any ideas. I'm not popular at the moment!

    HI,

  • Can i upgrade icloud storage for secondary account?

My secondary account is used mostly for email.  I deleted a ton of them but somehow am still voer the 5GB limit.
I'm willing to pay the $100 upgrade to get rid of the hassle, but is theere a way to upgrade icloud storage for your secondary account?

You would probably have to temporarily make the secondary account the primary account to upgrade it.  To do this, go to System Preferences>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...delete the secondary account, then go to System Preferences>iCloud, sign out of your primary account and choose Delete at all of the prompts (your data will still be in iCloud), then sign back in with your secondary account ID and upgrade the storage.
After upgrading the secondary account storage, reverse the procedure to assign the primary and secondary accounts back the way they were.

  • Primary and secondary Email accounts

    Hello,
Is there a way to specify primary and secondary email account ? In case if the primary server is down, the secondary server would be used for sending the notification.
    Thanks.

I am implementing something similar to what you have suggested. I was wondering if there is a way to achieve this by just changing configuration. Looks like it is not possible to configure it and coding it is the only way out.
    Thanks for your inputs :)

  • Outgoing mail keeps defaulting to a secondary account rather than the account I sent the message from?

I have a new MacBook Air. I have two google mail accounts set up in the mail app  - one primary account and one secondary account. For some reason my outgoing messages keep defaulting to the secondary account. Even when I create a new message or reply to a message from the primary account and have the primary account highlighted, replies keep coming back to the secondary account. When I hover over the outgoing email address, it looks like it was sent from the secondary account even though I sent it from the primary account. I've gone into settings and looked at everything, and I still can't figure out what is causing this problem.

i know it may sound crazy, but it does.
I sent the same email out through my outlook and the person received the correct version. There is an issue with my Mail but thanks for the advice tho.

  • Cannot login to secondary accounts; can't fast user switch

I am on a Macbook, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive, 10.4.8. Today, I developed a strange problem with logging in. I have auto login set so I log in automatically to my main account, which (thank God) works. However, if I access Fast User Switching to switch to a secondary account I have set up, called Test, the transition starts (the cube rotates) , switching to a solid blue screen...and never goes any further. I cannot seem to find any way to bring up the login screen on startup, either; I must allow my main account to boot up, and then try to switch accounts. If I turn off auto-login, I get the login screen, but login to the other account still fails.
If I select, instead, the Login Window from the Fast User Switching menu, I get that screen. But when I select an account other than my main account, and try to log in, I get that blank blue screen. I've waited many minutes to see if something will eventually happen, but no go. The only way to get control of my Macbook back is to hold down the power button until it shuts down.
I have run Tech Tool diagnostics and have repaired permissions (no errors found). I deleted my Test account, and redefined it; I also defined a second test account, one with admin privs and one without. No problem creating the accounts. However, when I try to log in to those accounts, the computer hangs on the blue screen.
I'm not sure when this problem began because I have not been using my Test account for a couple of weeks. A lot has changed since then.
    Any suggestions, anyone?

More info: I turned off auto-login, and was able to log in to my test account. Then, I was able to use fast user switching to switch to my main account. I will try again restarting into my main account and see if I can switch to Test. This failed consistently before I posted here. Perhaps the "sense Mac guru" circuit kicked in and cured the problem. I'm about ready to turn in so won't post a follow-up until tomorrow. Right now, I need to use my two accounts to get the job done (a writing job with screen shots of a new unaltered account). Then, I'll go back to trying to see if the problem still exists when I log in to the main account first.

  • How can I temporarily change to a different ISP and email account ?

I currently use Earthlink DSL with the modem connected by ethernet cable for my email and internet access . . . my brother has a Windows XP PC connected by cable modem, his ISP is Adelphia Cable . . . he is sick of years of Windows problems and ready to consider a Mac so since I have 2 older iMacs I want to lend him one to learn Leopard on and try out for a while . . . how do I set it up for his ISP's internet connection and email account ? . . . I need to keep all my Earthlink account settings intact for when he gives it back . . . do I need to temporarily add a new user with full privileges and separate ISP / email ? . . . or can I set up a secondary ISP / email account for myself as Administrator but enter all his email info instead of mine ? . . . thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks Larry . . . my brother and I do not use wireless, I am planning to shut down his PC, turn off his cable modem, switch the cable from the PC to my iMac, turn the cable modem back on, and see what happens when I boot up . . . when I did an Erase & Install of Leopard on this G5 iMac I chose DSL Modem during Setup Assistant and was instantly online with Earthlink . . . so I'm hoping the iMac will somehow recognize my brother's Adelphia Cable connection . . . your instructions for setting up his email are what I figured I would need to do so I hope he knows where to find all the necessary info on his PC because I know nothing about Windows XP.

  • Issues with multiple apple IDs and iTunes accounts

I work in an office that is all mac based and have mac computers at home.  I have an apple ID and iTunes account for personal use where I purchase books and music and I have an office apple ID and iTunes account to share calendars with colleagues using iCloud and purchase work related apps like upgrades to operating systems, etc.
I have an iPhone that is set up with my personal apple ID so that my music is on my phone and so that the photo streaming is attached to personal photos, etc.  Is there a way to sync my personal contacts with my contacts that are registered with my professional apple ID?  Ideally, I would like to have my iOS devices syncing my calendar and contacts with my work apple ID and my music and photos with my personal ID.  Is there any hope or am I stuck?
Thanks for any help anyone might have...

    Welcome to the Apple community.
So far as contacts and calendars go, you can share your works data and your personal data with your iOS device by entering the second account as a secondary account in settings > mail, contacts and calendars.
You should also be aware that your iCloud and iTunes accounts and different accounts, you do not have to use the same ID for both.

  • Find My Phone - Secondary Account - No longer possible with iOS 7

    Hello,
I'm guessing with the sheer number of posts following the iOS release today that this will likely get lost in the flood, but it's really really making me crazy and would love a fix if possible.
Pre-iOS 7, I had all of the family's devices set to use the same iCloud's account for find my phone. This was achieved by adding a second account to the device, disabling find my phone on the primary account, then turning it on in the secondary account. This was perfect. One login, all devices show up.
This no longer works as the secondary account, still listed after the upgrade, now has a note that find my phone is only available on the primary account.
Please please please. How do I get this back?  Honestly, I'd even take it as is if you could associate multiple accounts within the find my phone app, but I don't see this as an option either.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    I found the same Jeff.
    This infuriates me!
That was one of the draws for me to buy 5 iPhones for my entire family, one platform to support and the ability to know where everyone is.
I really wish they would re-consider and bring this back.
If not, I would be willing to pay for an app to allow me to use the locate feature.

  • Exchange rate variances between Primary and Secondary Ledger

We have a little problem on our hands.....we are implementing dual ledgers with dynamic posting, primary in Canadian Dollar and secondary in USD.
Exchange rate variances would occur if for example, we consider material transactions at different points in time. We would have no problems in the primary. However, CAD to USD exchange rates are updated monthly and very likely, rates would change month to month. Therefore, exchange rate variances would happen frequently in the secondary ledger.
We have been asked by senior management how these variances would be handled by EBS. Just wondering if you have ideas though we are looking into the accounting events in SLA.
    Thanks,
    Sanjib

If the requirement was to maintain balance in USD and Canadian dollar, You can use the Reporting currency option instead of Secondary ledger.

  • Problems with a Software update and Admin account

After updating my software two days ago, the administrator account on my 13" Aluminum MacBook has not worked. It works for 5-10 seconds after login and then totally freezes and doesn't recognise any change in status such as the removal of the power source or the plugin of my iPhone. I am positive that it was the update that caused this problem, as I have not updated the software on the other user account on my laptop, and that works perfectly fine.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how can it be fixed?
I called Apple Support yesterday before I realised that my secondary account was still working, and we established that there was no problem with the hard drive, but we were unable to get into "safe mode". The only advice the tech could give me was to find my startup discs and take it to an Apple store and call back in.
Now that I have more information, and am able to actually use most of the computer, I'm starting to think there may be an easier solution?
    Thanks!
since then I have been discussing the issue with another user on this forum at this link: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2474312&tstart=0
but so far we have had no luck!
Can anyone here help at all please? I can't make any sense of it!

Somehow setting up a root account and using it to access my admin account resolved the problem!

  • Migration Assistant and Network Accounts

Can I use Migration Assistant to transfer a Network Account (Active Directory) from one Mac to another? The "to" Mac will be bound to the same domain as the "from" Mac.

Thanks for the information. After thinking about it for a time, I actually I did a clean install of all my programs because I installed a SSD for my operating system and programs. Since these are expensive I did not have enough disc space to keep all my data, pictures, movies, tunes, etc. I also had some problems with the old MAC so I didn't want to import those to the new one.
DO A COMPLETE BACKUP FIRST of the new computer.
After that all I needed to do was get my data onto the new computer.
So I went to Finder on my new machine and found my startup drive's /Users folder. In that folder there is your home folder (looks like a house). I dragged it to the my seconary drive.
Then I went into System Preferences and selecting "Accounts" or "Users & Groups" whatever version OSX you have. I right-cicked on the account whose home folder I moved and selected Advance options from the pop-up.
I clicked the "Choose" button and navigated to the location I moved my "home" folder to and selected the new home folder. Clicked OK.
At this point you will have to restart the MAC. When the MAC is back up, create a document and save it. Then check the secondary drive to see if it's there.
Opened up a new Finder Window and navigated to the new "Home" folder which was just created on the new machine. Then do the following:
Opened a new Finder Windown and selected my backup drive (or where ever you have this stored on the old computer). I selected the following folders:
    Applications
    Deskstop
    Document
    Downloads
    Movies
    Music
    Pictures Public
I then dragged them to the new "Home" on the new computer using the other Finder Window.
Took some time, but it worked flawlessly and I have everything on my new computer. This is a good alterntive if you want to do a clean install of all your programs AND change where you store all your "stuff".

  • How to Restore Secondary Account Folders in Mail?

A picture is worth a thousand words:
For some unknown reason, the secondary account folders for my wife's account are missing. How do I restore them?

I've just got public folders working in Mail.app with Exchange. Go to your Exchange folders list in the side panel and select Public Folders. Right mouse or ctrl click to bring up Account Info panel.
Select subscription list tab and wait for the list to populate with available folders. Then go through and select only the folders that you want.
    Synchronise and you're done.
If you've ever previously shut off public folder synchronisation by changing permissions drill down into ~/library/mail/Exchange x@x/public folders and make sure read & write is possible.
