10.4.10 Audio Popping Issues: Information Check with Internal Speakers

For people with internal speakers, or those without subwoofers: Please read all the way to the bottom to find a test that will determine whether you are also having audio problems, even if you can't hear pops.
We've had a lot of discussion about audio popping due to 10.4.10, and the evidence indicates that the audio circuitry is going to sleep to conserve power, even on AC-only computers like the iMac, Mac Mini, and (at least one) Mac Pro. Some people claim to not have this problem, but I'm wondering if they just aren't noticing it.
Having external speakers with a subwoofer, set to high amplification, are key to obvious detection of the problem. Let the sound subsystem go idle for 30+ seconds (wait a minute with no audio, just to be safe), turn up your external speakers really loud, and cause the computer to make a sound. You should hear a burst before the sound plays. If you repeat the sound, you won't hear the burst. This is the sound of the audio circuitry powering on, and the speakers are amplifying it.
About 30 seconds after the sound finishes playing, if you leave the volume of your speakers turned way up, you should hear a "pop" as the circuitry is powered off. Then, playing another sound will recreate the burst.
I haven't been able to hear these sounds with internal speakers, either on the Mini or iMac. But the problem still exists, and it is detectable... if you know what you are looking for.
The burst of the audio circuitry turning on also causes a delay in the audio. The delay is a noticeable fraction of a second, an it can easily be detected if you have a repeatable source of sound. I like Terminal.app, because I use that application all day, every day. Here is how you can check to see if you are also subject to the audio problems:
1. Start Terminal.app (in the /Applications/Utilities directory).
2. Wait one minute for the audio circuitry to shut down.
3. Without typing anything else, very quickly strike and release the Backspace key.
4. If you pressed the key all the way, the program should have caused a beep. However, if the audio circuitry goes to sleep, the beep should occur after you have moved your hand off the key. This is because the circuitry takes time to power itself on before playing the sound.
5. Now, quickly strike the Backspace key again. You should notice that the sound is produced immediately as you hit the key, without the delay you just witnessed.
6. Strike the Backspace key repeatedly, to confirm that there is no audio delay. Do this about once every second or two. If you press the key too rapidly, not all of the presses will produce sounds... this behavior is not related to the issue we are testing.
7. Wait another minute for the audio circuitry to shut down, and strike the Backspace key once more. You should again observe a delay between your strike and the sound production.
If you witness delays like this, your audio circuitry is also going to sleep, and you are having the same audio problems as the rest of us. However, either because you are using internal speakers, or because your external speakers don't have the appropriate response, you aren't hearing the same bursts and pops as the rest of us.
Please try this test, and report here. I want to build a list of people who previously couldn't hear the sounds, but still have the delay. This might give us a better picture of the scope of the problem.

Re: 10.4.10 Audio Popping Issues: Information Check with Internal Speakers
Your analysis of what is happening is right on.
The problem on my Intel Mac mini with external Klipsch speakers (two mid-range/high and a subwoofer) is REAL obvious as the system emits a hum like a Spinal Tap amplifier turned up to #11 when 10.4.10 powers down the audio circuitry
Then, if I play a song in iTunes, it first pops and the hum disappears right before playing.
Quite annoying.
Here's what I sent to Apple tech support:

There is no need to power cycle the audio subsystem to save .0005 amps on your laptops.
And then to make your Mac mini/iMac/other desktop users have to put up with it when using AC power is ridiculous.

  • How do I play audio from my headphone jack and internal speakers?

How do I play audio from my headphone jack and internal speakers at the same time ? I have a splitter for my audio jack so that when i connect up my second monitor I can have it so it also plays audio as well as anything else i have connected into the jack but how do i let the internal speakers emit sound at the same time?

    Hello,
If you mean the internal speakers in your Mac, you can't play audio through them at the same time you have anything plugged into the headphone jack. When you plug something into the headphone jack, it disconnects the internal speakers.

  • When you sent your Macbook for service, did Apple fix the audio pop issue?

I'm experiencing the intermittent audio "pop" problem in my Santa Rose Macbook running 10.5.1. (There are numerous posts on this topic in this forum and elsewhere.)
I'm wondering if this can remedied by a a trip to the Apple repair shop.
For those who have experienced this problem, and who have sent their Macbooks back for repair -- was Apple able to solve the issue? Or is it unlikely to be remedied hardware, and instead be patched with a firmware fix via software update?

  • Multicam Cuts Create Audio Pops / Issues

When working with the multicam feature I can hear audio pops / cracks at the point of the cut.
If I place a cross dissolve at the cut is resovles the audio issue.
However if I don't want a transition at the cut I can hear a pop / crack in the audio.  How can this be corrected?  Is this a glitch within FCPX?
    Any suggestions or solutions?

I'm having the exact same issue. Multicam edit, with Zoom audio as main audio/sync track. Although I choose the audio track as the primary on the multicam, and switch to video only to cut between cameras my audio track is also being cut. This cut creates the "pop" in the timeline. No matter what I do I continue to get this result. I would assume that the audio track would not be "cut" with simple camera switching....(no changes to timing of the video). Have you solved this issue?

  • Re-issue voided checks with same check number

    Hi All,
We accidentally voided a check which has already been received by the vendor. We want to re-issue the check in our system, but it wont reconcile as the check numbers are different. Is it possible to change the check number?
    Regards,
    Pooja

    Hi Pooja
Lets assume that the cheque numbers that were voided were from 10001 to 10521. So create a payment document against the same bank account which was used earlier and assign the document numbers 10001 to 10521. Now again create a new payment batch with the same set of parameters as provided previously. Ensure that the same invoices are selected by the batch (no less or more). Now submit the batch. This way the system should assign the same cheque number to the supplier sites which were issued previously. So if a supplier was issued 10002 cheque number with an amount of $1000 previosuly, then this batch should also issue the same cheque number for the same amount against that supplier. Please ensure that the system is bahving in the same way as thought. Else you might have to generate manual payments for each of these 521 payments :(.
In this way, you will not be required to do any swapping or run any custom script. While reconciling, you will match the bank payments with this new payments.
    Hope this clarifies.

  • No audio recording onn my imac with  internal mike?

I have no audio recording with internal mike. All sound preferences checked and input devices checked. tried PRAM and rebooting.

    Hi,
I take it you mean System Preferences > Sound > Input has the Mic Selected and the volume set high enough to make the Blue Bar move to about half way.
In the App you use to record does it have a place to Select the Input choice ?
Is the Internal Mic the devices selected ?

  • Using Mountain Lion iOS and audio output will not change from internal speakers to AppleTV so that sound can come from TV speakers, why??

I am using Mountain Lion iOS and trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my plasma TV using AppleTV and AirPlay mirroring.     The video does just fine.     However, there is no audio coming from the TV.     After activating AirPlay I try to select Apple TV as the audio output in System Preferences and it highlights it but then immediately goes back to Internal Speakers and only has sound coming from the MacBook Pro..
    What's going wrong ?????
    AJ

Are you sure that WIFI network doesn't have an AppleTV on it?  Just because you don't own it doesn't mean there isn't one on that network.  The laptop or better said the OS cannot differentiate between an AppleTV that you own or not.  If it sees one on the network, it will show you one as being available.  The automatic reconnection is happening probably because the last time you streamed to an AppleTV, you didn't drop that connection before sleeping the computer or shutting down iTunes.

  • UI Audio Issues following sleep with External Speakers

    Hi
    I have a May 2011 27inch iMac that I upgraded to Lion.
I use a set of Aego Acoustic Energy Speakers plugged in via the headphone port.
All works fine until I put my mac to sleep, upon restoring from sleep some UI sounds stop working. iTunes, and QuickTime play fine but I get no sound when emptying trash, dragging folders, new email, send email etc.
The strange thing is if I unplug the speakers then all the sounds play in one continuios blast so I can new mail sound x8 send mail sound x6 etc then if I plug the speakers back in all is fine again until I send the mac to sleep and then problem starts again.
A restart also sorts this out but its a pain having to unplug / replug in my speakers everytime my mac sleeps. It was fine under Snow Leopard.
I was hoping the 10.7.1 update was going to fix it but it hasn't.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Richard

  • Left Audio Only From Headphones Jack With External Speakers

Yes, the balance is set properly under the sound system preferences.
So here's the problem, I have JBL Encounter speakers connected via the headphone jack and since yesterday only the left speaker produces sound.
I've plugged my ipod into the JBL speakers and they work fine. I've also used headphones with my computer and again, left audio only.
I've even switched the right and left satellite speakers and again only left audio is produced... though on the right (side) satellite.
Any thoughts on how to correct this? The nearest apple store is 2 and 1/2 hours away so I'd prefer not to go if there is another fix.
My three month phone service is up but I'm still covered under the apple care for a few more months.
    Thanks in advance.

Sounds as if your headphone jack is either defective or has been damaged by having a cord yanked at some stage, Kanji
It is either a trip to your nearest AASP or a mailing box from Apple to get it resolved. Applecare will cover it if the problem isn't due to accidental damage (though a cat tripping on the cord can be enough to produce such results and the price could accordingly be substantial as the port is mounted on the logicboard on recent MBPs as I understand it) .
You might want to try a regular pair of headphones in the socket to make sure the problem also occurs with them, too, though.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Audio keeps swtiching from headphones to internal speakers randomly and on it's own.

Basically the title says it all.
I run Snow Lepoard and the headphone jack, as of late, has been cutting left channel and general static noise when moved around at all.
My guess is that the headphone jack is shorting out and causing the Mac to think it's being plugged in or taken out...a lot. If this is the case, is there a way to repair it without the replacement of the entire logic board? Isn't the headphone jack hard wired to the board?
If it's a software issue, I can't imagine what it would be...

  • No audio with Internal Speakers Mac Book Pro 17inch

i have reinstalled os from OSX DVD  10.7.0
after that i can hear the audio only from earphones

Go ahead and complete the Software Updates to 10.7.5... that may or may not solve your problem. If it doesn't then your audio output port may be 'stuck' in digital mode. There's a tiny switch inside that can be 'reset', usually, by unplugging and replugging headphones multiple times (fast) or by using a slightly dulled toothpick.
You can usually (but not always) tell whether or not you're stuck in digital mode by looking to see if there is a red light on in the port.

  • Distracting audio popping in T61, and no idea why!

    Hey,
My laptop had been giving me trouble, so I recently did a restore to factory settings and started from scratch. Now, everything works pretty much perfectly, except the small audio popping issues I had before seem way, way worse now. I used a DPC latency checker and found out that mine is hovering around 3300 or so, with frequent spikes to 78000 (the popping is extremely noticable then), which from all my research is way too high.
Is there any easy fix for this?

  • Audio pops/clicks when changing angles in multicam clips

I am having problems with audio pops/clicks when working with angle switching in multicam clips. it always occurs when i utilize any of the "audio enhancements" features, such as the loudness or background noise removal features. Switching angles results in audible audio pops. The only way to get rid of them is to disable the audio enhancements. This occurs regardless of the audio source. Is this a known bug that is being addressed? I rely heavily on the audio editing features in my work and am hoping this will be resolved in an update soon. Thanks for any help-

Hi Brad, thanks for the reply!
That sounds like a good workaround. What I have been doing in the meantime is create a new compound clip after I finish all of my cuts, and then apply the audio edits to the new contiguous audio clip in the compound clip.
What is really strange and frustrating is that all of my new audio bugginess really began when I could no longer detach audio from my multicam clips in 10.0.9... After doing many searches here, it seems that in this most recent update of FCPX this is no longer a 'feature'... I don't know why they changed this, but in older updates of FCPX you could detach audio from original clips, compound clips, or multicam clips with no problems. I would routinely create and edit all of the angle cuts in my multicam clips in the timeline, and then if I wanted to, be able to detach the audio and do more edits if needed. Thankfully I can still apply edits to compound audio clips, but it would sure be nice if I could just correct/enhance audio without ugly-sounding artifacts in multicam edits. Thanks again-

  • Audio output changed to 'Digital Out' and speakers don't work! Please help!

I'm not exactly sure what's happened, but after starting up my macbook pro, my speakers/audio haven't worked.
The volume control in the menu bar is inactive (looks light grey) and in the Sound menu, I have no option for output devices except for 'Digital Out' - there is no other option for 'external speakers' (as per usual) or anything!
I can plug earphones in, and sound comes out fine... I don't know what may have happened, but I'm really worried - I use my MBP for home & work; I need my speakers to work!!
If anyone can offer any advice, I'd be really grateful. Thank you in advance.

Talked to Tech Support about this when my machine locked up in this same fashion. There's a little "door" inside the headphone jack that can get stuck in the open position and keep the audio from switching back to the internal speakers / stuck in the digital (optical) output position...
The solution: the iPick... It's a toothpick, but if you use it to poke around inside the headphone jack until the little door gets unstuck, it becomes an iPick, and a box of them are very expensive, but they come in lovely colors and are very intuitive to use...
I'm not kidding... Stick a toothpick (or other non-conductive small stick) in the headphone jack and joog it around until it releases the little door...

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
