10.4.10 crash - no recovery

I have 10.4.10 up and running for some time. Three days ago I wanted to statup an application and my system suddenly hung. A cold reboot was the only way.
Since then I cannot startup my computer anymore - it won´t pass the white screen.
I went to my (a not so recent) old backup on aI got were:

(it should be 42 instead of 103)
the volume Mac HD 10.4.10 needs to be repaired

0 HFS volumes verrified
1 volume needs repair

I then used Techtool and checked the volume structures and got the message: " allocation file failed: allocation overlap (-694)".
I let Techtool repair the volume structures, went tru the normal process of Techtool and when it was finished I repaired the permissions again.
Unfortunately to no avail.
Any help is highly appreciated !

You can't fix the filesytem error with any tool provided by Apple. The application DiskWarrior can fix these errors, but it will also require you to have an external FireWire drive to boot off of.
I've experienced this sort of error on my iMac at least 4 times since I received it in March. It seems that filesystem corruption correlates highly with the lockups, but I'm not certain which is at fault. In my case, I zeroed out the drive and reinstalled the OS (which should flag any bad blocks), but it dod not help.
There is some flaw in the 24" iMac (check the iMac forums, it's full of mysterious lock-up problems) that leads it to crash and that crashing is related somehow to the filesystem corruption. I'm not use to the fragility of the Mac filesystem as I'm more experienced with Linux (and have never had the same sort of issue).
The problem has been reported by me to Apple each time I encounter it, along with the lock-up problems. Probably 20 instances since March. However, I have never received an acknowledgement of the problem or inquiry for additional information.

Win7 Crashed: Data recovery from extended partition

Hi,
My DM4 2180US recently crashed and wont boot to Win 7 (not in normal or safe mode), also it is asking for the Recovery Disk to repair. So before I try in recovery Disk I would like to recover the my personal Datas HDD. I tried booting Ubuntu Live (from USB) to access the hard disk, But I could access only the primary partitions (initially came with laptop) bu the extended partition which I created by shringing the primary partion (C Drive). How to access the extended partions of Win 7 in Ubuntu ? basically I want to back up my datas (Docs, Photos, Videos) from the HDD before trying the recovery.

I understand you want to back up your data before running a reset on the system.
Because you’re not able to access the operating system that does limit your options:
1st- Turn the PC on and start tapping F11 immediately, if you see windows loading files go across the bottom the screen you can stop tapping. Once the progression bar has loaded it should load you to a recovery manager, now because you have made some changes to partition that lowers the chances of this working. But if you are able to access the recovery manager, if you look in the right column there should be an option that will allow you to back up your data.
2nd- If the first step fails, you can remove the hard driver and attempt to hook it up to another pc and it might read the hard drive as an external and you can try pulling the data that way.
3rd- Last option would be to take the PC somewhere locally and have them attempt to back up your data. Of course majority of these stores do charge some sort of fee for their service.

How can I fix repetitive 'fontd' crashes after recovery from time machine backup?

After recovery from time machine backup (Disk Utility told me to reformat my internal hard drive) i got annoying repetitive prompts from crashing 'fontd'. How can I fix it? Anyone suffering from the same disease?

Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

Need help Satellite L855D-S5220 win7home prem 64bit crashed no recovery disc,no recovery partition

I bought 2 toshiba Satellite L855D-S5220 Home Premium 64 bit laptops at walmart back in july 2012,also bought extra 2 year protection from walmart.
Laptops didn't come with dvd recover disc ,but did have partition recovery.
We upgraded to windows 8 through one of the cheap $14.99 online offers
I still have bank receipts for everything.
Windows 8 was just to new and different for us, also got a fake microsoft call saying that our systems were showing several virues and corrupted files.
The guy seemed legit,I allowed him acess to my computer,after he showed me several hundred errors and ask for $250.00 I reliased that it was a scheme,and said no that I would call microsoft to inquire about this,the guy then erased almost everything in my computer,and hung up.
I didn't really like windows 8 at the time,and was nervous about someone maybe having access to my computer ,so we checked online about going back to windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
I was in a microsoft forum or at least i thought ,I asked about going back to Windows 7 home premium, and was told to simply hold 0 and restart the computer.
This worked.,but left a number string of #'s and lettere Like Ti064WOC (C) systems,and anther systems folder under that in sytem protection.
Then a couple of days ago my computer crashed
I tried the ) start recover out of the box and it ran all the way through but did not set up,it erases all my partions

We are facing some system slowdown (or hang) due to locks on either (sometimes both) gv$global_transaction or dba_pending_transactions view. Browsing the session during
"hangs" we find up to 64 parallel processes recovering (presumably dead) transactions.
So far so good: we have 16 cpus * 4 (fast_start_parallel_rollback set to high).
I thought that FSPR param is relevant only for crash recovery (is that right?) so we drilled
down the problem discovering that during these "hangs" one of the nodes N1 can't feel
N2 whilst It's true the opposite (N2 feels N1).
I can't explain the lock, to be more specific: enqueues. Is the parallel activities that
actually locks the segment underlying the views?

either Oracle uses FSPR for any kind of rollback activity (not only for crash recovery)
or Oracle uses FSPR also for distributed trans
or Oracle uses FSPR when rb activity is estimated above a certain threshold
or in my case N1 thought N2 is down and took over N2's transaction recovery
Machines are 2 x (9.2.0.8/64 RAC on Solaris 9/64)

Database Crash - Media Recovery Required - [SOLVED]

I am trying to understand why media recovery was required when our database had crashed ( this was 2 months ago ). This is just for my understanding and I would appreciate if you could explain it to me.
We have a 10g database on Solaris 10 and EMC SAN for storage. One of the technicians came in look at some electrical issue. And accidentally turned off the power supply to the SAN.
This caused the database instance to crash.
When the DBA tried to startup the database, he said that he was getting errors that some datafiles were corrupted and ruled that media recovery was required.
He took the backups taken 12 hours ago and applied the archived redo logs. Everything was fine except for the downtime ( it took 6 hours for this whole process).
I have several questions:
1. why would the datafiles get corrupted? was the disk in the process of writing and could not complete the task?
2. why did the database not do crash recovery i.e use redo logs? why did we have to use backup?

the task?This could happen if a datafile being accessed during the power failure resulting in corrupting the file which can happen to any file during power failure..In this case it was datafile resulting in dataabse crash...
2. why did the database not do crash recovery i.e
use redo logs? why did we have to use backup?Since the file is corrupted you need to replace it with a last backup and apply logs to bring it consistent state....

Toshiba Satellite A505 crash/ file recovery

I have a Toshiba Satellite A505 that suddenly crashed. Worked fine when I shut it down the other night. Wouldn't boot up the next morning. I've tried using the recovery CD. with no luck. Tried the AVG recovery Cd with no luck. It won't run in safe mode. Will load drivers up to avgidseh.sys and then stops. I've removed the hard drive, It does seem to be spinning ok. Hooked it up to another computer where it gets recognised but it won't open or anything. In fact when I try it stalls out the other computer. I've tried UndeletePlus but that also just locks up. Any ideas anyone? I'm a photographer and was bad and didn't get some of my latest photos backed up. I'm not too worried about getting the computer back up and running but I'd really like to be able to get at my files off the hard drive if possible. Thanks.

Two thoughts..
system volume on disk is corrupt.
You may be able to resurrect the drive by running this at the command prompt in WinRE.
chkdsk c: /r
I am being told that I don't have permission to do that.
You've apparently solved this somehow.
The usual remedy is to take ownership of the files/folders. See KB823306.

InDesign CS3 (PC) crashed document recovery woes.

InDesign CS3 (PC) crashes when trying to open a ID document so I can't determine the problem. How can I open it without crashing? The problem may be a font or a placed image but I don't know for sure because I can't open the file.

It was on a PC and I brought in my Mac and got the same response. The links
are in disarray, I suspect that is the root of the problem but not being

Duper. The time machine full restore left addressbook and mail disfunctional. I then ran Super
duper, which recovered Mail, but not address book
Any suggestions? BTW, as far as I know, the data for address book is still in the Library, it'"s only the app that's Missing

Thanks for your reply John, but that didn't do the trick for me. I called Apple's professional audio support. Even though I didn't get the answer I wanted to hear, the support was awesome - the guy was very knowledgeable and helpful. Basically, the error I'm experiencing is a nasty one if it appears with pro apps like Logic. He indicated my only recourse was to re-install Logic. Since I'm on Logic 7, I figured if I have to re-install, might as well upgrade to Logic 8. I'm mid-project right now, so I'm pretty nervous doing that, but not much choice.

Disk crash, need recovery strategy help.

We had a two drive failure on our AS400 and had to reinstall the operating system. Can we install A7.3 from scratch and then copy in our libraries from our latest backup and JDE function properly? Any ideas would help!

Well, it may be that I am not correctly understanding your disaster situation. I am assuming that you have the same IBM CPU and same IBM hardware serial number. It sounds like you had to replace a disk drive and a tape drive, but not the actual CPU itself. Now it does sound like your operating system backup was eaten up by the tape drive and lost, and thus you are saying you had to reinstall the IBM operating system? Would you not have a slightly older backup tape that you could recover from? Even if you did not and had to reinstall the operating system, JDE World is fairly independent of the OS/400 itself (other than needing to run on it). So I am thinking that you do NOT need to reinstall JD Edwards. You should be able to restore the JD Edwards libraries, though you would need to have the QGPL library as part of that restore process, and run okay.
If my assumptions are wrong, then what I said may not apply. Certainly if you restore onto a new CPU, with a different serial number, you will have to contact JDE support to get a new license key. When doing a hot site test, I restore the operating system, and then restore all the user libaries, get new license keys, and I am up and running. Note that in a hot site test I did not have to do a reinstall of JDE. But certainly the difference maybe that in a hot site test, I am restoring the operating system from backup tape (so not reinstalling OS/400). So I have not personally been involved in the exact situation that you may be facing (I doubt many folks have such experience).
You probably want to be in touch with JDE support and look to them for guidance on what to do, giving them your exact restore situation that you are facing.
Hope this helps a little bit. Bit surprised that these days a disk failure would cause a system crash (have not seen that since the 1980s) - most systems have disk mirroring or RAID of some kind now. So the system can still run while waiting for the disk drive to be replaced (perfomance may suffer, but better that than losing the whole system).
