10.4.10 - kernel panic w/ wireless?

Hi,
Got yesterday few kernel panics releated to wireless driver (see bellow). This started happening after installing 10.4.10. Sundenly, I've got problems with wireless - ie connection lost for no reason and only way to fix that was to restart computer. Now kernel panics. Does anyone have this problems? System is MacBook C2D 2GHz.

Well dont hope to much. I had the same issue as well. Since my computer is still under warrantee I went to apple. The first time they changed my motherboard as well as the keyboard (never got to know why) After I got the computer back it all started again and went back. This time they changed the ram and I was told to downgrade back to 10.4.9 so I dont think that they will look into this which makes me nervous. What if Leopord has the same problem as well. Does this mean we will never be able to upgrade ourselves. Im going back as the problem occured again before I downgraded back to 10.4.8 confirming what they had said to me. I can not take the risk of being not able tio upgrade myself with a computer thats barely 7 months old. Will keep you posted on the ongoing with apple in Singapore

  • Kernel panic w/ wireless adapter

Im using a realtek RTL8191S wireless usb dongle.  I have Kernel 2.6.38. I downloaded and compiled the drivers from realtek's website and issued modprobe 8712u and when I plugged in the device I get a kernel panic (ie: the system freezes and the capslock light blinks)  I even get a panic when I don't issue modeprobe and plug in the device.

I bought this afternoon an Emtec ekco wi350 with the RTL8191S chipset, and it works out of the box on the 2.6.39.2 kernel. The r8712u module is automatically loaded when I plug the usb dongle. I had trouble with the command line tools so I installed wicd-gtk and after entering my WPA key and filling the IP/Gateway/DNS fields (I want a fixed IP so I didn't use dhcp) all seems well!

  • Thunderbolt iMac Kernel Panics on Wireless

Did a complete fresh install with the disc it comes with, even did a fresh LION install, same issue.  Turns an expensive computer into a boat anchor.

It sounds like you got a bunch of Macs either with bad RAM, or a misinstalled Airport card.  Call AppleCare.  Your machine has a one year warranty which can be extended to 3 years from date of computer's purchase anytime during the first year from date of purchase with a registration of AppleCare.  Kernel panics typically indicate a hardware issue, or a bad driver, or a directory issue somewhere.  When it happens to a batch of similar machines on an erase and install, it most often is a hardware issue.  Sometimes it might mean the wireless router is incompatible and needs a firmware update.  This is especially true of non-Apple wireless routers.

  • MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.

    Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:

A way to know that the crash is gonna happen is that the internet stops working and as long as I click on the wifi icon on the menu bar, The crash occurs. Could someone please help to put me out of misery please . Thank you so much for reading this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Have a nice day.

i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
    hope this helps

  • Kernel panic with PCMCIA wireless cards.

UDEV throws a kernel panic when I insert either of two wireless PCMCIA wireless cards.
UDEV version 106 and the latest kernel 2.6.20.  Both wireless cards worked just fine previously
so I'm sure it's a problem caused by upgrading.
Has anyone else experienced this problem with PCMCIA cards?
    -A

Seems about rite but my system works foro some time and then at some random point freezes... guess it could be the same issue tho.
So its out of arch dev hands and needs a kernel update? Am i right to assume that next time kernel updates its the right time to try 20 series again?
Yeah im drunk, tried to check for typing tho ^^

  • Kernel panics will not stop! (wireless problem suspected)

I've seen a number of posts about this and am continuing to have this problem!
I have been to the Apple store 7 times in the last three days...here are the problems I've been having and what they've done. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
All of a sudden I started having Kernel Panic crashes (a least 5 a day.) Seemed to mostly happen when I was browsing (using Firefox.) Also I would usually experience an intermittent connection to the internet before a crash. (i.e. I would be browsing, then the connection would be lost...I'd turn off Airport...turn back on...then a few minutes later while browsing...crash)
    Here is what I've done:
    - At first we thought it was software...after two erase/install, that wasn't it.
    - Maybe the new RAM from OWC...re-sat the RAM, took RAM out and replaced with factory RAM...had OWC send new RAM, that wasn't it.
    - Maybe it is logic board, factory RAM, or Airport Extreme card...Apple replaced today...and THAT wasn't it.
    - Got home after all these new parts and it crashed again while browsing wirelessly. So, I thought, "Could my Qwest wireless network be doing this!?!?!"
Have tried some different settings with Qwest and am awaiting another crash.
Does anyone have any idea what else I could try? (2 erase and installs, a new logic board, new RAM, new AE card, didn't do it!)
I so appreciate any help or advice. I'm in the middle of a couple of major projects and cannot bear to go back to the Apple store for an 8th time!
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Refurb, rececently apple installed new logic board, new RAM, new AE card

Someone back a few Topics pointed out that 10.4.10 on Battery, and some other factor would crash. AC no crash.

  • Novatel Wireless XU870 and kernel panic

I have installed both Novatel drivers and Apple WWAN Update to a Mac Book Pro (OSX version 10.4.8). When I put Novatel Wireless XU870 card in ExpressCard slot Mac Book Pro goes grazy. In Finder top bar icons (clock, display, etc) disappears and after a second or two they come back. OSX shows a message of new network ports and let me configure PPP settings etc. At the same time Finder top bar icons are blinking on and off. I can´t get connected with Internet dialup and after a minute I got kernel panic. I tried with another Mac Book Pro but it didn´t work either.
I have tried the card with brand new Fujitsu-Siemens laptop and it works great with it (Win Vista). Any ideas? Please, help.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Mac Book Pro

So it seems it's down to the SW, either theirs or yours, theirs seems most likely.
They don't say what exact version of OSX they're using..
As a long shot, you might try Trashing these files and Reboot...
    /Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
Have you tried plugging it in without their SW installed yet?

  • Wireless card and kernel panic

So for no apparent reason my airport has failed in my powerbook 17" 1.5 w/1.5. It just has no strength to start and seems to loose juice as time in a given session passes. so I threw a wireless card I had in to see how it would fare. The good news is that it works great but the bad news was that I often had to restart it up to 10x to get it to start instead of just going to the kernel panic screen. The functionality is so hobbled without the card that I'm willing to do this every time I restart but it would be great to make everything sing again. The card is a Sonnet card and they have no functional plugin to fix the issue. I'm running 10.4.9 solidly with no other issues and no other problems once i get a clean startup. Any ideas?

Kernel panics are not good news as my FAQ* explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
If they happen only with the Sonnet card, ask them for updated drivers.
If they happen with no Sonnet card, it sounds like the router you are using needs a new firmware update. See my FAQ* on Wireless:

  • Kernel panic when enabling wireless

Since the kernel update this weekend (3.9.2-1), I encounter a kernel panic (pictured here) within a few seconds of enabling wireless.  This is on a Dell Inspiron N5010, which has a Broadcom wireless card.
Is this an Arch-centric issue, or should I report this panic somewhere else next? A cursory search doesn't seem to find other mentions of it online.

  • Kernel panic when using Apple Wireless Keyboard (bluetooth)

I kept getting kernel panics (gray multi-language screen) at seemingly random intervals on my MacBook Pro with 10.5. After a while I realized that part of the time it seemed to be when I would type something that woke up my Apple Wireless Keyboard (the new thin one) and cause it to reconnect to the laptop, then the other times seemed to be when I would go out of range of the keyboard where it would normally bring up the "Connection Lost" notification.
I have disabled bluetooth for now and no longer use the keyboard (it was my only bluetooth device) and the kernel panics have stopped.
Has anyone else noticed this? And perhaps more importantly, does anyone know of a workaround until this bug is fixed?

Same problem here today. I've got a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse at home. I put the computer to sleep at home and when I tried to wake it up at work I had a kernel panic..
I'm just doing some research now of what a kernel panic is at all.

  • Macbook wireless and Cisco base station causes kernel panics

So my company uses Macbooks and Cisco wireless base stations. For some reason, when they use bother ethernet, and the wireless, the Macbook will kernel panic for no apparent reason. So since we have a fast wired network, I have been advising those Macbook users to turn off wireless and use the wired network. Wouldn't you know, the kernel panics go away. Is anyone aware of an issue with the wireless chipset in the Macbooks and the wireless chipsets in the Ciscos not liking to play with one another? I know it's the wireless in the Macbooks as if I use any other wireless base station from Apple or Linksys, the issue is not there. I should also mention that when people use those Macbooks on the wireless every once in a while, they get an access control list error. We do not have ACLs for our wireless. Our PowerBooks and iBooks do not exhibit any of these issues on the same network, so we know it is an issue with Intel based Macs. Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem at college (they use Cisco equipment). On most of the campus everything is fine, but in the area near my classes (typically), wireless causes the mac to panic.
I asked at IT, and came back more confused (apparently, they use the same model WAPs throughout the college, so they couldn't see why one particular WAP would cause this. They guessed it was to do with the huge amount of traffic that particular WAP gets, with it being in the Computing department and all).

  • IMac 27" with Wireless G network causes Kernel Panics

    I bought a 27" iMac Jan 8th 2010
    At home i'm running a Wireless G network through a linksys WRT54G V7.0 router
From day one i was running into Kermnel Panics several times a day
When i was provided a new machine the same thing happened
The machine has been away for repair for 2 weeks and nothing was found.
As soon as the machine was back home the Kernel Panics started again
A clean install has ben done, and when setting up the network for the build in airport, the machine died again in a kernel panic
After further discussions with apple repair they stated the the Kernel Panics were caused by the Wireless G network, and was advised to get myself a wireless N router
I got myself a wirelees N router (apple airport extreme), and no more Kernel Panics were seen
    Now the questions are :
Did anybody else ran into this issue ?
Is somebody have this same issue and also have a linksys router ?
Would anybody be able to explain why my Linksys WRT54g V7.0 router running Wireless G cuase the Kernel Panics on my machine ?
Ok quite a story, but hope to get some constructive answers.
    thnx
    Paul

I took home a 27" i5 iMac on 7th of Mar 2010 and immediately two days later i had my first kernel panic.
When i called Apple Support the next day i was led through a barrage of file deleting and the usual Disk Utilities Repair Disk actions. Two days later another kernel panic happened but this time the computer display remained blank. I brought it back to the department store where i purchased it and, they agreed to replace my unit (still within the store's seven days warranty).
Five days later my new unit arrives and the moment i turned on the wireless connectivity i had another kernel panic. I was ****** - NOT looking forward to carrying the 38lb computer back to the store again. Called Apple again and the guy had me reinstall OSX. One day later kernel panics still there.
Then i experimented by not turning on the wireless internet, for two days no kernel panics. The moment i did, a kernel panic would occurs, i got suspicious. That's when i stumbled on luupski's post (I'm real glad i found it). I also was using a linksys WRT54G router and getting the same kernel panics as everyone on this thread. Now that the root cause has been identified, i decided to save my SGD258 (apple airport express) and instead invested SGD18 in a Cat5e 20m ethernet cable. My mac now works perfectly apart from the lack of wireless network, which i can grudgingly bear.
Real glad to see genuine and useful posts in a forum like this. I will be giving a heads up to the Apple support guys, they seem to be totally oblivious about this issue. Its weird since the WRT54G seems to be quite popular here in Singapore.
    Thanks,
    simon

  • Belkin wireless router causing kernel panics

Whenever I connect to my family's Belkin wireless n router, after several minutes it causes a kernel panic randomly. After a hard reset, no wireless tools are able to find the network. Normally I'm only here for a few days so it doesn't effect me too much .
There doesn't appear to be anything noticable in dmesg.
Note that I've been able to reproduce this running Debian Sid with kernel 2.6.26, and using 2.6.25 did not solve the kernel panics, but it was still able to see and connect to the network after reset. I am unsure what is causing this, all I know is it happens everytime I come home, and the problem seems to fix itself after I leave and come back.
My wireless card is an intel 4965

The router is not causing the panic, the panic is caused by the driver. Please file a bug upstream with the driver maintainers

  • Wireless Causing Kernel Panics?

I've been battling random kernel panics since I got my MB. I figured it was my 3rd party RAM but memtest after memtest turned up nothing. I swapped chips, ran tests, everything and still get on average one per day. I finally figured out that OSX logs the panics and here is what every one in the log says:
    Thu Feb 23 18:29:02 2006
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0019CACE): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault), registers:

It looks like it's the Atheros driver. I use WPA-PSK on my wireless. Anyone else having problems?

I've been having kernel panics also. I think I've tracked it down to the Apple Airport Card. I have been using my (one week old) MacBook Pro all day today plugged into ethernet no problems. Over the weekend it kernel paniced 9 times at home before I gave up on using it. I use an an Apple Airport hub at home. I am ordering a replacement AirPort card today. I'll see if that fixes it.

  • Wireless Kernel Panics Fixed with Airport Update

It has been 48 hours - not one kernel panic due to wirless. (and I have downloaded plenty of files, the first thing to trigger shutdown)
My heart has sunk a few times when the LCD looked like the gray veil was about to drop, relief just web page changing. I hope this lasts. The irony is that I love my MBP even more, my faith in Apple has been restored, (bit like making up - lol). I have to mention that Apple Australia were quick to reply to my email. Thank you, Apple.
Very glad I retrieved my MBP before they started taking it apart - it could be that lack of logic board stock actually saved this MBP.
Good Luck all, hope Airport Patch fixes your problem, I am curious, if Apple are aware this patch has fixed this problem, they must know what caused it in the first place.
