10.4.10 kills USB Maxtor external disk

Hi all,
The latest OS update killed my external disk. It is no longer recognizing the USB external disk. Disk utility started from the internal disk or the Tiger install disk does not show the disk.
I don't have another Mac, but the disk is seen by PCs. Do I need to get some other update? Is there a way to :"roll back" to 10.4.9?
Thanks in advance,
dan

Hi, having posted in another thread that all seems to be well with this instal of 10.4.10 I am now busy wiping the mud off my face.
My Maxtor USB drive was fine but my LaCie FW drive had real problems. I did sort these eventually by re-downloading the update, un-mounting all externals and running the update again. Don't ask me why this works but it may be a solution. None the less the system remains sluggish using huge amounts of virtual memory.

  • TS1963 Migrating from Time Machine onExternal Disk,  Why won't Migration Assistant see my USB Connected external disk drive?

I had to format my internal disk drive on my MacBook Pro, and reload Mountain Lion 10.8.3.   The startup assistant could not see my external disk drive with the Time Machine backup files.  After many tries I told it to skip restoring the files and let it boot up.  I was able to see my 1 TByte external drive and could see the Time Machine files using Finder.
I started the Migration Assistant and told it to migrate from Time Machine Files on an external drive.  It also did not see the backup drive.  The only drive icon it showed was the Macintosh HD (my internal drive).
Isn't it supposed to show you the drive you are moving the files from?  I tried starting it and it looked like it was going to try to migrate the files from the internal drive (to where I don't know, back to itselfl?)  Or  do I just not understand.  Is it seeing the external drive, without identifying it (in the Migration Asst,)?
Really looks like it is going to back up  the internal HD with files that are on the internal HD and not from Time Machine.
I need to restore my files and have been told I need to do so using Migration Assistant and not Time Machine.
Help pleae and soon, need to get my taxes finished!
    Thanks!

I'm surprised that no one replied to this.  But I learned a few things that may be helpful to some of you with this same question.
When you restore data from an external disk drive with Time Machine files on it.  As you move through the dialog (in either System Startup or in the Migration Assistant) it will ask if you want to restore from an external disk with Time Machine files.  If you select this option, it will show you only one Icon.  You will expect to see your external disk drive listed as the source of the restore.  The icon that is shown will look like your ilnternal drive and will be labeled something like Macintosh HD.  That is not your internal drive, but is your backup drive.  It is labeled  the same as your internal disk drive and it is telling you that you have found the backup for your internal disk drive.
Would be nice if Apple would put a note of explanation about this as part of that dialog.  I wasted several hours trying to make it work  Finally I took a chance and selected the drive shown and it did restore my system.  I ended up with two users since I did it from Migration Assistant.  Had I done it from the System Startup, there would only be the one user.

  • Installing windows 7 with usb 3 external disk drive crashes

So I was trying to install my windows 7 64bit onto my macbook pro. I bought an external Samsung CD/DVD RW drive to load the windows disk. However, halfway through the windows 7 install, it freezes at 65%. The most I could gather is that windows 7 doesn't have the drivers for the USB 3 ports on my mac, and therefore can't find the windows disk mid-install. Is there a way around this, maybe turning off the USB 3 abilities in some way?

nevermind turns out the install disk was flawed

  • Problems mounting usb Maxtor disk Help PLZ

Usb maxtor disk that already has 2 OSX partitions does not want to mount in 10.4.9 updated mac mini.
Disk utils in 10.4.9 is smoking some weed and does not / or want to do anything with the usb Maxtor.
Tried on windows with Macdrive 7.0.4 trail and nothing mounting as well.
Success on windows with Macdrive 6.1.5 trail and it mounted.
Any idea what is going on here as it used to mount perfectly in osx sometime ago but not sure if it was in 10.4.8 or earlier.
    Help would be appreciated

Indeed, I too have externals, both USB and FW attached to Macs running 10.4.9 and have no similar problems. I think the signs are that 10.4.9 is fine and that the issue in this instance is with your Mac or drive. Understanding that should help focus attention where it needs to be in order to resolve the problems you are experiencing.
First things first - if you are using a hub, shut the Mac and drive down, disconnect the hub and connect the drive directly to the Mac. Then power up the Mac, and once booted, power up the drive. Open Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities on your mini), select the external drive (the entry giving the make/model/size) and select 'repair disk'. Next, select the first partition on the drive in Disk Utility, and repeat the repair disk. Lastly, select the second partition on the drive, and again, repair disk. If you get an error with any of these repairs which then reports a repair cannot be effected, the drive has damage - likely data rather than physical - which will either require a utility such as DiskWarrior or Tech Tools Pro to attempt to resolve, or a reformat after you have backed up your data. Problems of that sort can often result from drives that are powered down or disconnected while writing or updating.
If Disk Utility reports no errors after undertaking all three repairs, or the system continues to be unable to read the drive correctly, the problem is with the MacOS install on your system. In that instance, first try to repair permissions on your internal hard drive (also using disk utility). An SMC reset may also help.

  • One USB port does not work with external Disk or USB key

    Hello,
Back to my iMAC there is 3 USB port. The second one - in the middle - does not work pluging an external Disk, an USB key or an iPOD nano. However it works well connecting a Wacom tablet.
Is there an explanation to this behaviour ?
More the keyboard is plugded on USB port 1 and the mouse on the keyboard. Time to time - especially at reboot - I have to unplugged the mouse and plugged again it in order it works.
In advance thank you for your answers
    Regards

Since it does not work for three different devices, I will assume it is not something simple like a faulty USB cable. Since it does work for one device, I will also assume that the port is (at least partially) working.
As a test to narrow down the cause, I would try restarting from your Mac OS X installation disc (insert disc and restart with the C key held down).
At the first Installer screen (after language selection), go up the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. Now, connect the USB drive into that center port. Does it appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?
    Please post back the result...

  • How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

I have not tried iCloud for this...and understand that it is mainly for your backups. These link might help:

  • Can I connect USB hubs instead of printer or external disk?

I plan to get a MacBook Pro and set up a wireless network. I currently have a couple of USB hubs connected to a PC. To these hubs are connected three printers, two external disks, and several other things. I want to be able to get rid of the PC and access these devices from the MacBook wirelessly. Is the AESB the right thing to use for this setup?
The MacBook Pro will have Snow Leopard as OS.

Most likely yes. The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) USB port is capable of supporting a USB hub with multiple USB printers and/or USB hard drives.

  • Burn ISO to USB or external HD with Disk Utility

I am desperately trying to burn a ISO file to a USB and external HD but Disk Utility does not want to. Instead I get the error message "Could not validate source - error 254". So there must be a problem with the source which is the ISO file.
I already tried setting the Partition Map Scheme to both Master Boot Record and GUID Partition Table. I also formatted the drive to FAT and HFS+. I cannot find the cause of this error. It clearly looks like Disk Utility does not like burning ISOs to USBs or HDs.
However, I really really need to this since I cannot burn ISOs with my SuperDrive which is also a common problem ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0 ) with my MacBook Pro.
I am 100% sure the ISO file is fine. Also checked the SHA-1 and everything else is fine. I should also mention that the ISO file is the Windows 7 RC. So yeah..this time it's not Windows' fault.
I just need a way to install Windows without using the optical drive. I don't even want to think about what I will do when Snow Leopard comes out...

Start with the google hits for a search of *error 254 disk utility.*

  • 2.6.22 kernel and USB external disk ** SUSPECTED BUG**

Hi, as the title suggests, I think I've come across a bug in the 2.6.22 kernel.
I made a post here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=35343 which was basically in regards to initial access of my external USB2 disk after mounting it. I just did a fresh install and some testing and it appears to be a kernel issue somehow. I updated my system doing pacman -Syu, then I enabled the testing repo, installed the 2.6.22 arch kernel, rebooted and the problem occured. I then disabled the testing repo, removed the 2.6.22 kernel and went back to 2.6.21 and the problem vanished.
The problem: Mounting my external (lacie) USB2 hard disk and trying to access it in thunar. The first time I try to access it after mounting, all instances of thunar lock up for around 30 seconds, then it comes back to life, displaying the contents. Even thunar instances that are displaying other directories on the local filesystem freeze. Subsequent attempts to access the content are fine and no lockup's occur. Again, this issue only happens with the 2.6.22 kernel. I even compiled a custom 2.6.22 vanilla kernel and the same thing occurs.
Can other people with external HD's try with this kernel please? I'd like to find out if it affects all external disks.
    Notes:
    * Automounting / mounting is done via DBUS and HAL through XFCE.
    * The issue doesn't occur with optical disks, autostarted with DBUS / HAL in XFCE.
If possible, can anyone suggest a way of me trying to debug this further? I've not done any kernel debugging in the past.

I also have that problem in KDE. I have an external HD with firewire or USB input.
My external disk is mounted successfully, but reading directories of the external disk in Konqueror makes all Konqueror instances freeze for some time (just the same as your problem). Even accessing external folders from konsole makes the konsole freeze for some time.
And another strange thing happens: when the external disk is mounted pacman hangs after looking for inter-conflicts... done. As soon as i switch off the HD, pacman goes on working...
When mounting the HD via Firewire the problems are greater than via USB.
I just downgraded my kernel to kernel26-2.6.20.10-1 and everything works perfect!

  • Cannot find Maxtor external hard drive in Disk Utilities

I have an external One Touch Maxtor external hard drive that I connected via ethernet to my iMac. I want to reformat the drive using the Apple format but Disk Utility cannot find it. When I go to the Finder, I can see the drive, access, and copy to and from the drive, but it doesn't show up in Disk Utility? I don't have a firewire cable to hook up the drive that way, anyone have any suggestions?

I would appreciate if anyone can help me with this

  • Ejecting USB 2 External hard disks?

I've just got some Freecom Toughdrive 250GB USB 2 drives.
I want to check something about ejecting them and I can't seem to find info about this, even from Freecom.
When you eject a USB 2 hard disk, should the disk then power down? My Freecom Toughdrives all remain "live" after ejecting (the ready light stays on and the disk is still spinning, you can feel the casing vibrate.) You get a little noise when the cable is pulled, as the disk suddenly spins down.
Ive tried 3 of these with my Mac Pro and my girlfriend's MacBook and all of them behave the same - is this normal or am I damaging them by unplugging them like that?

Note: since posting this, Freecom customer services got back to me, and apparently on a Mac, the bus-powered Toughdrives don't power down when ejected, but it's safe to unplug them anyway.
On PCs, they do power down if you use the "safely remove hardware" option.
