10.4.10 update, dead hardrive

hello
i have a powermac g4 mirror door.
per the automatic software update, i downloaded/installed OS 10.4.10
i restarted machine and everything was running very sluggish.
i decided to reboot one more time.
when the machine restarted, all i got was the flahing folder/question mark icon.
i attempted to boot from my installation disk and my hard drive was no where to be seen. basically, everything was gone.
im not sure what caused this. obviously, with the age of my machine, it is not intel based. i am wondering if this is the issue.
can anyone give a guess at what went wrong and / or, how i can fix?????
thanks
wayne

Wayne:
Thanks for posting back with an update.
they said that my drive is dying. i just find it odd that this happened on the heels of the new system upgrade.....
Purely co-incidental. While faulty software installation could foul up your formatted volume, it is very unlikely it will affect the hardware itself. I have installed the latest OS update and it works fine. At first my fan seemed to be running quite a bit. I repair disk permissions, installed the Tiger 10.4.10 Combo update, repaired permissions, and it works as cool as a cucumber.
In terms of backup, I have SilverKeeper I got with my LaCie firewire HDD. I used it once. I use SuperDuper, almost exclusively, occausionally resorting to Carbon Copy Cloner. Both of these will clone your entire HDD, or your Users Folder. SD will do incremental backups (smartupdate) if you register the product. Easy to use, and very efficient. Mac Backup Software Harmful is an interesting review of some of the popular backup software.
Please post back with further questions or update.
Good luck.

  • Windows Update = dead X

I noticed that Windows Update had a new X-Fi driver so decided to allow it to install.... huge mistake. My sound cut out, and merely rolling abck the driver didn't cut it. I uninstalled all of the apps/drivers and reinstalled from the web download that I had previously saved. the sound came back, but I was missing most of the X-Fi applications that came with the card. I then tried restoring the directory from backup, but a few Dlls were missing. Arg. (not sure where those were located... didn't check system32, so maybe there!)?Then I realized... System Restore. Duh. I rolled back to a couple of days ago, my audio is working and I no longer get the missing Dll complaints, but the mode switcher and similar apps no longer come up.
They appear to start, but nothing happens (or a blank small box in the case of one of them.)?I can't find my CD. Any ideas how I can reinstall the apps to get it working 00% again??

Wanna share my exprience. Just installed the driver updates, first impression?seems .... better. Did experience with high pitch or no sound most of the time (very minor CP). Playing BF242 and suddenly high pitch sound .... haha .... just dead without knowing someone knifing me ... LOL. It happened again this morning .... dman , so:?I did remove original Creative driver => reboot => Creative WDM Clean up driver, remove creative directory, clean windows prefetch folder, clean up dri've?=> reboot => defrag => reboot => install original Creative driver => reboot. However,?after done everything mentioned above,?result is:?XP boots up, but no sound at all. (no windows sound, iTune?not start playing songs).
It makes me feel?helpless and hopeless, m just wanna relax and play games after 6 hard working days. Duno what to do then and just mess with XP interface and press the Windows update button, found the X-Fi WDM update ..... haha .... a candle light in the dark. M just install it with no doubt. After reboot, sounds back on. :smileyvery-happy:?Most of the drivers update to version 2.0.0740. So far so good, but will see .... Qnix.

  • 10.6.7 Combo Update = Dead iMac

I have posted this in the iMac category but it probably belongs here.
After a failed Software Update of 10.6.7 on a 20" 2007 silver iMac (it failed to reboot fully and was stuck in a loop with a blue screen), I used an install disk to re-install SL back to 10.6.0. All good I thought and everything was working fine, so I downloaded the .7 combo update and installed. Same thing after restart - stuck in a loop with a blue screen. Once again forced shutdown, pressed power button again and nothing happened. No power, no sound, no chime. The iMac is dead this time. I have reset SMC etc but no help.
I'm hoping someone else is having a similar problem because when I take it to the Apple Store they will not believe a software update could cause this.

Sounds like you may have a permissions issue.  The proper way to install a major update is to first repair disk permissions, reboot, do the update, reboot, then do another repair of the disk permissions.  If the list of items being repaired shows anything other than java items then rerun it again until that's all you have (for some reason the java run time system always gives a permission error).
I would try to start the unit from the dvd, run disk utility and see if the drive shows up, if it doesn't then your drive is dead and you need to go to the Apple store anyway.  If it does show up, select the volume and run "repair disk".  If that is clean, then do a repair permissions.  If it can't be made clean, then you may need to erase the drive and start all over.

  • Windows Update dead as dead in death.

    Hi.
I just want to let you guys know about a common defect in windows update that maybe repairable.
It affects users since years and may pop up over and over , depending on the dll installed.
    Problem:
A path problem stops the WUD from starting. From the CBS LOG:
    A reference to d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\
I don’t have that drive letter assigned, except for the DVD dive, I can’t recollect installing a Service pack from there. I was using Windows update until then. Read further down –>

Search for “d:\win7sp1_gdr\” and see how common the problem is.
Then I found a reference to
    smiprovider.dll
    http://www.herdprotect.com/smiprovider.dll-2ed894ff8830b99a6c199d2eac8382ddc76f5b92.aspx
It looks like a bad compilation that someone did. I cannot overcome the problem, because in order to update, I need Windows Update to run.
    Installing the latest version of
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [October 2014]
did not solve the issue as I hoped. Everyone else that had that issue and reported his/her fix to it ended in reinstalling the system. That is my last resort because I would need to rebuild my system of installed Office and Adobe
suites and all the small tools – this would take days. As for now, I can run all programs that I had installed so far, but getting new programs like new versions of IE is impossible.
Maybe someone can look into that issue and if it is fixable with a patch, let me know about it. I can help with more information as well.
    Thanks so much,

  • Apple TV update = dead

Hi. I just updated my Apple TV as requested -- it worked fine before -- and now it doesn't. The power light is on, all cables plugged in etc., but the screen is black. I've tried unplugging, resetting, etc., and while the power light blinks when I press buttons on remote, nothing happens. Now what?
For starters, I'm going to leave it unplugged all night, see if that works. Any other great ideas?
Wow, Apple stuff is just infuriating when it doesn't work correctly. Ruined my night.

The update didn't apply properly, connect to iTunes via micro USB and restore

  • Problems with Yosemite update and hardrive space! How can I install and use macbook again?

I went to upload Yosemite but didnt have enough space on my hardrive. Now when I turn on my computer it tries to install - gets to about 15 minutes and then stops and says theres a problem extracting files from essential.
There isnt enough room on my hardrive to install Yosemite. I now cannot use my macbook. I cannot access any of my files, documents, apps, itunes ect. I dont know how to free up space on the hardrive when I cannot access anything.
tried to boot in safe mode but it will not let me. Stuck and unable to use computer. HELP!

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • N96 unpluged during update= dead, how do I enter r...

I have been searching around trying to find anwsers to this, I dont even know if there is a recovery mode (like my iphone has)
but so fare taking out battery for some minutes, restarting pc, let pc run update with n96 coneckted (and with battery in again ofc) did not work.
was hoping there was some sort of pressing power and menu combo that would force DFU mode ?

    Hi,
To prevent this kind of problem in the future try to update your phone through the WIFI if you have one or the Packet Data service also if you got one. This will keep you in a safe way from getting you stock again if you try to update.
    thanks

  • Dead hardrive?

Hi, I am the owner of a 3rd gen 30gb iPod.
Recently I was having trouble with my iPod updating within iTunes. It would get stuck on one song and not continue to the next. First I attempted removing that song temporarily to see if it was the song itself. After that the problem continued, so I decided to "Restore" the iPod using iPod updater. Upon doing so, the iPod would update but for only around 6gb of my 11 library. I then went into disk utility and attempted to repair the disk, but it found nothing. So I then zeroed out the drive and used "Restore" again. Yet again the iPod stops around the 6th GB.
If I keep iTunes running for a while like this I then get this error message "Attempting to copy to the disk "iPod" failed. The disk could not be read or written to."
I have owned the iPod since the weekend the 3rd generation was announced. I have not in anyway I know of done anything to the iPod that could be harmful. I understand that the warranty is completely gone. Is there anything I can do? Will apple repair this for a price, or would the price be close to a new iPod?
    Thank you in advanced.
    Alex M.

I got my first ipod the week that the 3rd generation came out too and i had the same problem about a year ago, and i didn't do anything either to it. The guy at the apple store said that the hard drive is "burnt out" on it. They do make hard drives that you can put in yourself but i don't know exactly where to find them and if u can get the full version of the ipod softwhere. heres a link of a hard drive that Toshiba makes.

hope i helped and goodluck with it, tell us if it worked

  • I am unable to set my WD mybook world edition (white light) for time machine.

I have new iMac running OS X Mavricks 10.9 and a WD mybook world edition (white light) connected via eithernet to router.
I am unable to set up time machine using this drive.
I can see the MyBookWorld drive in Finder and read and write files with no problems.  I can also see the MyBookWorld_Backup drive but I am unable to connect.
Time machine can see the drive but when I select, use drive, it trys to connect and gives me an error message: There was a problem connecting to the server "MyBookWorld-Backup"
I have already updated the hardrive firmware.
    Any ideas?

WD and their lack of support for Mavericks:
A recent email from WD reads:
    Dear WD Registered Customer,
    UPDATE: November 1st, 2013
As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks and are experiencing difficulty in accessing your external hard drive, please do not save anything to the drive, disconnect the drive from your computer, and contact Western Digital Customer Service at http://support.wd.com/country/ for further assistance.
The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years. However, solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.
    Sincerely,
    Western Digital
Which is basically Western Digital informing you that their out-of-date utilities don’t support Mavericks.
In any case those utilities are not the most effective. The moral of the story is: the first thing you should do after buying a WD drive is to format it as HFS Extended (Journaled) and not install ANY of their utilities but instead use reliable applications like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper - or Time Machine.

  • X79A-GD45 windows 7 freezes during boot after bios upgrade/usb 3.0 drivers inst.

    Hello,
After I upgraded my bios from 1.3 to 1.4 I noticed I still had some not properly installed hardware in the computer management screen, so I used live update 5 and found the the Renesas USB3.0 Drivers. The system runs fine, except from a cold start.
When starting the machine, windows freezes on the 4 colour logo, before the usb initializes (this I can tell from the keyboard not lighting up).
A forced reboot does not help. However, going in the bios (to check if all drives are functional) and then booting, does. After this the machine runs fine again.
Now my question is, is this caused by the new bios or by the Renesas USB3.0 Drivers? Or is it something completely different?
    Thanks a lot,
    Floris
    X79A-GD45
    i7 3930K

Using LU5 often ends up this way doing UEFI/BIOS updates dead board!
In the future, recommend to use the forum flasher found here with instructions on how to use it; https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
After a flash, it is also recommended to remove the power cord from the PSU, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS & reset.

  • New hard drive and my huge aperture library

I am updating my hardrive to a slightly smaller SSD drive. I have a 170GB aperture library that I want to consolidate into a smaller library on the new drive and then a remote library or at least pictures that are stored on my time capsule that I can access at home but do not take up much space.
As I am currently cloning my HDD to the SSD drive I have omitted the aperture library.  Should I copy it accross to an external hardrive and then when I have booted up the new SSD after it is cloned then sort out the pictures?
    What would you recommend?

I guess a follow up would be is Lightroom better at storing files, ie an easier file structure?

does this mean i have a dead hardrive?

but the motherboard doesnt see anything..

    Automatic
If you are getting to the "Disk boot failure insert disc and press enter" then it is trying to boot from the wrong HDD therefore the device order CD,HD,Floppy is not the issue - it is the HDD disk order which you need to change.
In Advanced BIOS Features there is an item called "Hard Disk Boot Priority" - select this and make sure that your boot disk is at the top, if not move it up with the + key.

  • Vbios.dll?

I am running Windows XP Pro, over a K7N420Pro and a GF4MX440T, both from MSI, both are Live Update series... I have tested all the versions of Live Update that had been published. And, what do I get? Just an error saying "VBIOS.dll load failed". So Live Monitor and Live Update never finds any update (dead or aLive Update).
    Any workaround???
     ?(

Yes, I am jumping all over the forum! :D
Well, the new version will be 3.30 again?? I suppose it will have a minor version number somewhere... Too many years programming to believe that the proud of a programmer will let a new version (or minor version) release without a version number increase... :D  :D  :D
I'll be waiting anxiously the update... Hope they release it soon! :(

  • MacBook Hanging Up On Grey Apple Screen

I have a problem with a MacBook that I bought in late August. I turned the computer off this morning, and when I turned it on again two hours later, I noticed that it was very slow. It took a long time to start up, the desktop took several minutes to appear, and then automatic log-in applications took another few minutes. I restarted it again, hoping to fix the problem, but now my computer completely hangs up.
The chime goes off, and the light grey screen appears, as well as the apple. The spinning thing at the bottom comes up, and nothing else happens. Even after an hour, the computer still makes its "thinking" noises. Not the loud, grating dead-hardrive noise (I don't think) just the normal one.
I have no idea why this is happening. I've installed nothing new, deleted nothing, or made any big changes. Well, I just moved to England, but I've used the correct power adapter. I don't think that would be the issue.
Oh dear, in the middle of typing this I am hearing a very bad noise. It almost sounds like something in there is clicking. It's hard to tell where it's coming from, but it sounds like two things are rubbing up together, but something is catching and causing that click. I don't think that's a good sign.
I do not have my repair disks with me, unfortunately. I cannot start in safe mode, it hangs up here, too. I've reset the PRAM. I attempted to start up by CD with the AppleCare CD, just to see if I could. I got what I expected, nothing. I'm assuming it's a harddrive problem.
Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you.

I'm replying to this in case anyone else searches with a similar problem. Directly after I wrote that message, I tried to start it up again, and was greeted by everyone's favorite question-mark folder icon flashing on the screen. The Geniuses couldn't do anything with it, including startup with an external drive, and my hard drive has been replaced.
    Back up your stuff, folks.

  • When I updated to ios 5.0.1 my battery was half way full and it was charging. It started to install it and now it is completely dead (with the lightning bolt) and when i try to turn it on, i have a white screen. HELP

I have a ipod touch 4g, i just updated to ios 5.0.1 today. At the time, my battery was half way full so i had it charging. It started to install, i'm not sure if it actually did or not, but it turned off and started loading like if it were a new ipod, or like when you install new software. then the screen went blank and it restarted. it says its completely dead now but if i click the home button it turns on but goes straight to a white screen.

    - If the screen remains white, let the battery fully. After charging for an hour, try a reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
