5 ) hundreds of random folders showing up in prefs with names like "~~A%" etc... - just keep deleting them
6 ) windowserver bugging out and using 35% of the CPU - no solution
7 ) GoLive crashing randomly - well, it did that before but its worse now
8 ) apps not showing up in force quit dialog - click in the white and they appear
9 ) login to apple forum causes error - redirect to another page and nav to where you were going
#9 has nothing to do with OSX - what a messy solstice!

That's nothing to do with the update, that's down to the TWAIN driver in your Photoshop.
As to the rest, try applying the COMBO updater and repair permissions.

Gmail google cal Spanning Sync MobileMe Contact Address Book = What a mess

Hi,
I used to have my life on an exchange server, I then switched to use gmail and google calendar but kept my contacts in Mac addressbook (which I imported from outlook).
Now the only clean way I found to sync Google calendar with my iphone is by installing Spanning Sync --> iCal --> MobileMe --> iphone.
I don't use iCal, I don't use mobile me. Just google calendar and iphone.
It all seemed to be peachy but I got greedy and wanted to consolidate my contacts across all of these.
What a mess!
I now have over two thousand contacts, hundreds of duplicates, hundreds of empty cards, dozens of names without any information whatsoever.
The "find duplicates" and merge functions on address book are a joke and even so, spanning sync seems to keep adding them back on..
What's going on!?
Anyone else have this problem?
How are you solving it?
Or do you have an altogether different system for consolidating google calendar , contacts and iphone!

Do you mean each Contact has double-entries in the All group? Or do you mean the contacts appear in multiple Smart Groups as well as the All group?
You can restore a previously backed-up Address Book by using the built-in "*Revert to Address Book backup...*" function on the file menu.
Before you start doing anything though I would suggest backup your current messed-up Contacts using the same backup function.
You can also try exporting the All group as a vCard, deleting all your Contacts and smart groups, re-import the vCard and start over. It should notify you on import of duplicates.

Pc to mac change and what a mess

I've had my iPod for quite some time and have purchased thousands of dollars of music from itunes. I bought an iMac on Friday and when I went thru the set up it gave me a .mac address and said it would change my itunes to that. That made me nervous but I tried to go back and was not able too.
Now I just signed into iTunes and when I sign in with the new .mac name it shows I have NO PURCHASED music, tv shows or movies.
When I go back and use my old sign in name that I used with my PC that shows NOTHING either, no music, tv shows, movies, podcasts.
Again I had thousands of dollars worth of music. Can I get it back some how? I still have it on my iPod but I can't plug it into iTunes now because it will erase it all!!

i'm the person who wrote the above post. We have more problems.....
My daughter has her own iPod and she went to iTunes on her PC and her iTunes account is totally blank too. Not a single song in it. Now our accounts are not related in any way accept for the credit card number! (and there is nothing wrong with that either, all this music was purchased over the course of a few years at least. I have no idea why this happened however her account was last used 3 2 days ago and it was fine but that was prior to me buying and registering this new iMac.
What a mess, I got my old iPod which has some music on it and plugged it into my Mac to see if I could transfer the music on it to my blank iTunes some how but I can't do that either as it says it was formatted by a PC and I can't update it on a Mac.
So many problems, but really I just want my music back.

i downloaded firefox 4, what a mess cant get to some websites, made a mess of bookmarks and cant add new bookmarks. what has happened.

Why did the new Ffox install in \Apps\Data\ instead of \Program Files\? what a mess.

Using XP, I had reservations about upgrading, but Ffox Help refused to allow questions about upgrading, until I did :-(
Instead of replacing the existing installation, it added a second, messing up my start menu, which still runs the older version.
But the new version has disabled without explanation or advice, about half of my extensions/add-ons/plug-ins, including AVG, my security program.
In addition, the Add-ons Mgr >> More links just take me stupidly to the AVG website with no clue what the problem is, nor how to describe my compatibility need to vendor. (Mozilla probably knows the problem with each estranged vendor, but did not choose to pass that on in the error message.)
In addition, the Ffox page that brought me (Add-ons disabled by upgrade) to 'ask a question', indicated (by offering to install 3.6), that all of this hassle was known before I was forced into it, and I should have known by telepathy that 7.01 was all an avoidable mistake if Mozilla had allowed my question without requiring me to install 7 first ;-( {I know you are sorry. Please open the upgrade problems page if you value your reputation for intelligence.}

I am a little confused. I thought it was not supposed to install without Admin priv., which should have required Admin. or not installed at all. (sigh)
The whole Add-on, Extension, Plug-in thing seems a bit complex, but I now gather that Add-ons are adverts for additional software, & there is an Add-on Manager that also handles Extensions & plug-ins (difference?). Half of my dozen extensions are disabled, and won't update. A third of my 2 dozen plug-ins are up-to-date, 2 thirds requiring messy research to even determine if they are supported any more (?).
Would it help for me to uninstall either 7 or 3.6 or both under Admin user login?
And since I have doubts of the usefulness of many of these add-ons, will I have to do all the Mozilla research before I uninstall 7, to avoid getting locked out of the forum again? (or is there a way around that website problem? or perhaps leave 7 installed, but for AVG safety reasons just use the 3.6 for now?)
Is there a comparison list of 3.6 & 7 features I have not been able to find?
(Perhaps I can just uninstall 7 and forget it for now.)

ITunes Match Deletes Most of My Produced Music... What a Mess.

iPad cracked so I need to make sure all my playlists and songs are backed up.
Bought extra Cloud coverage and subscribed to Match to make sure my music and custom mixes wouldn't get lost as they were no longer even on the PC.
Now Match deleted 90% of my music and left "matched" tracks on the iPad that I never even listen to.
Anyone know where the tracks went? Playlists are all intact but empty.
Now when you try and add a song it says "can't add because Match is installed".
Any clues on why it would delete both locally and on the iPad? This was a huge mistake.

Just got off the phone with Apple and was told indeed Match went ahead and deleted over 200 custom mixes and produced tracks. It is insane that this is not described in detail before using the service. After about 5 minutes they offered a refund of the $25. Now however my nightmare begins of sorting though the mess of what was lost. This is not the result I expected when I signed up.

"Cloud" Podcasts -- What a mess -- Please help me

Just upgraded to 11.1. How do I get rid of all these old podcasts episodes that have the cloud icon? I've tried everything and still can't clean up this mess.

What a mess !! : ORA-01000: maximum open cursors exceeded

I have read a lot of article about this error
I m also having this problem with 8.1.6.0 or 8.1.6.1 oracle db ( and classes112 jdbc drivers ) and my application
I have checked that I close every statment,preparedstatment,recordset and connection ( connections are closed every 30 sec by a dbpool object ) objects when I have finished to do the job but I m still having this error.
In fact it seems that with theses oracle releases, the statment,preparedstatment and recordset.close have no effect on cursors.
looks like that it clears the cursors only when you close the connection.
So anyone here know what version of oracle and jdbc drivers correct this bug ? 8.1.6.2 ? 8.1.7.0 ? classes12 drivers ?
oracle 8.1.5.0 seems to work fine I have monitored the cursors activity with select user_name, sql_text from v$open_cursor; and they are opened and closed correctly ( statment.close do the job.. )
I m quite lost. Anyone have some info to share with me about this issue ?

I've dealt with this problem too. Oracle says that it is a jdbc implementation problem. We came accross this problem when running reporting/high volume programs even after every jdbc object was dealt with(.close(), =null..etc). Something about internally spawn cursors not being dealt with by the DB. Apparently this was dealt with in the newest release of classes12.zip but we found that we still had excess cursors. We set our open_cursors variable to over 400(default is lower than 50) . Doing a forced conn.rollback() every time the connection was returned to the pool seemed to help too.

Loaded Mountain Lion and time capsule no longer works, airport utility can't be configured, back ups have stopped, sparse bundle in use errors occur, what a mess!!!!

Should Airport Utility now be defunct for my time capsule because I have upgraded OS to Mountain Lion? I have tried every fix I can think of but AU will not set up. I'm also getting repeated time machine back up failures and now I have a new "sparsebundleinuse" error which is totally useless to me, I have no idea what a sparse bundle is, I have no idea what it's suddenly being used by and there's no information to say what to do about it. Apple is killing me here!!!

I've tried to but on the install for Airport Utility 6, after the download I get through the introduction then the license then I get "airport utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported" and that's it, no more options!?

Please advise to install QuickTime!!!
Anything seems to help to my problem with the QuickTime installation error (code 3 when installed with iTunes and code 1402 and 1603 when updated separately), even I have tried all the tricks and steps found on this forum to the same error codes.
So, my error messages 1402 relates to the hkeylocalmachines/software/classes/QuickTime.gt/DefaultIcon - I have all the possible rights to my pc, but still anything can't be done with this in Regedit. I can't open the Quictime.gt at all nor check rights,as it's not opening.
When I cleaned my pc, with the guidance found here, of all the files left after removing the softwares I noticed that in Regedit there is lot of files directly under Classes named with QuickTime* - should those removed as well?

When QT7 first came out, I ran into the same problem you are having. What I did was remove QT using the add/remove control panel, then did a search for all files all folders that were left behind and deleted them as well.
Next I went into the registry. HKEYLOCALMACHINE+Software and deleted Apple Computer,Inc. I then went to the Edit menu of the registry, selected Find and type in QuickTime. To locate registry entree's left behind.
After selecting Find from the Edit menu of the registry and type in QuickTime, you then hit the enter key on the keyboard. When a QT entree appears you delete it. You then hit the F3 key on the keyboard, which locates the next key. You keep repeting this process untill you have deleted all QT. There are many.
Once I had everything related to QT completely removed from the computer, I then ran.

The registry is risky to go into if a mistake is made it could involve re-installing the OS, so you may want to back it up, if you can count on that. Some people have used this link and claimed good results.

IPhone Mail, Contacts, Calendars iCloud and Macbook iTunes settings what a mess!

So I have been having some trouble with my iCloud settings and my iPhone lately and tried some changes and have discovered many more issues that make no sense to me. I have an iPhone and a Macbook Pro. Before I set the settings for each device separately so if I made changes to my email passwords I would have to manually update this info on both devices. Later I noticed on iTunes there was an option to sync the settings, so I selected this option and completed the sync. I have found that this does not work at all. When I make a change to either device it does not update on the other. For some reason the iPhone keeps losing passwords for random accounts for no reason, the info is on the desktop and works fine on mac mail and even when entered on the phone it will ask for it again a week later.
So I decided to wipe all mail accounts from the iPhone and start fresh and transfer the settings from the Macbook to the phone. Well this created a new problem. I have two Apple ID's. When I go to turn on all of the on/off settings for this account through mail,contacts and calendars settings, the switch will work but they will not show the blue on icon...no problem at least the information is on the phone. On my second Apple ID I experience the same problem but now the option to sync reminders has disappeared. I performed another sync and still the iPhone is missing passwords for random email accounts, ones that worked before do not work now and ones that did not work work, constantly changing.
In an attempt to see if some other settings needed to be changed I opened the iCloud settings on the iPhone and found that nothing existed, which is strange because under Mail, Contacts and Calendars that account is listed. Now when I input my primary iCloud info into the iCloud settings on the iPhone it asks me to deactivate the settings from the came iCloud account listed under Mail Contacts and Calendars???? They are the same account and should be sharing the same settings! So now when I go into Mail Contacts and Calendars this Apple id is listed twice and naturally neither of the settings transfer to the Macbook!
All I wanted to do was to make changes to a password for an email account on one device and have that information updated on the other...sync as they say. Now I have found out that the iCloud accounts listed under Mail Contacts and Calendars are not associated with one another...it's all a mess to me!
I am reverting back to manually entering account information for emails and iCloud accounts on both devices because the sync option seems to be faulty to me!
Oh yes I am using a Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and an iPhone 4S 64GB with iOS 6.0.1

App Store and 10.6.8 - What a Mess

I know this appears in many discussions in this area, but I have searched the web and tried everything I could find to no avail. I will note what I have done below, so if anyone has anymore ideas that have worked, I would appreciate the lead. Hopefully, Apple will be working to fix this in 10.6.8, as I am seeing the same problem all over the web.
I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro. My intention was to dload Lion, excited to install the new OS. I launch the App Store, and it launches fine. I go to purchase and dload Lion, and it just sits and spins. Nothing ever is purchased or dloaded. I check the "Purchased" applications in the store, and it indicates I have not purchased anything yet. Out of curiosity, I try to dload another app, a free one, from the App Store, and I get the same thing. This is an App Store problem generally, not specifically related to the purchase and dload of Lion. Based on ideas from the web, I have tried the following (none of these have worked at all - problem still exists exactly the same):
1. Dloaded the 10.6.8 Combo updater. Installed. Rebooted. Didn't work.
2. Deleted the App Store application. Rebooted. Installed 10.6.8 Combo updater. Robooted. App Store launches - still same problem.
3. Edited my apple.com.Boot.plist in Libarary/Preferences/SystemConfiguration as suggested online - also deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist (in the same folder). Rebooted. Started the App Store. App Store launches - still the same problem.
4. Logged into the App Store with a few different usernames (even created a new one). Still same problem.
5. Logged into the App Store and re-verified my security code on my credit card (on all of my iTunes accounts). Still same problem.
6. Started iTunes and made sure I was logged out of the account I am trying to purchase with in the App Store. Lauch App Store with that username and try to purchase. Still the same problem.
7. Started iTunes and logged into the account I am trying to use on the App Store. In iTunes, re-verified my security code on my credit card there. Logged out of the account in iTunes. Lauched the App Store using this account. Still same problem.
8. I did successfully purchase, dload, and install Lion on my Mac Pro at work. I have logged into the App Store from my MacBook Pro using this same account. When I go into Purchased, it does show there with an "Intall" button adjacent. When I click the "Install" button, I basically get the same reaction. The App Store sits and spins, but nothing is dloaded or installed.
Again, I know there are a lot of posts on this issue. However, the summary items above is a list of ideas I have found on the web. Each item comes from suggestions I have found on the web. I have tried each to no avail at all. I have rebooted diligently as system changes have taken place. The App Store launches fine. The store basically just spins and no purchase or dload occurs.
P.S. When I go into the Console under Utilities, I do get an error message over and over from the App Store. It is the following:

I have searched this error online and tried a few suggestions. However, I still receive the same error in the Console and the App Store behaves the same.

Actually, your suggestion is one of the first I tried. I created a brand new user account using my wife's email. It had the same problem.
However, if anyone has the exact same issue as mine (e.g. you have installed it elsewhere successfully), it looks like I have sucessfully worked around it. Here is what I did (am doing):
1. On the computer where I successfully accessed the App Store, dloaded and installed Lion, I logged back into the App Store with a different username. From there, I re-purchased Lion (which I am fine with, as it is not overly expensive and I will be running the OS on two different computers).
2. Lion successfully downloaded
3. Lion will then try to begin installation - which you won't want to do (at least I didn't as I already having running on this machine)
4. The Lion installer will show on your dock. If you right click it, you will be able to select Open in Finder. When finder opens, I moved the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application to my desktop (just easier for me to find)
5. Next I used Toast (or any other CD/DVD burning program) to burn the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application to a DVD. You will need to use a DVD as it is about 3.5 GB.
6. Once complete, I put the DVD into my MacBook Pro and copies the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application to the desktop of my MacBook Pro (remember, this the computer I could not access the App Store from)
7. Once the application is copied to the desktop, simply double-click it and it will begin the install. From there, just follow the instructions on the screen.
A bit convoluted - and I'm sure there are more efficient steps to do this. I just wanted to outline how I did it. In any event, I am now running Lion on my MacBook Pro after three days of trying to figure it out. Good luck!

JSF ValueChangeListeners - What a mess - HELP!

I have a page with a tabbed pane with two tabs. Each tab has a dataTable with rows of data that have been returned from a database call. There is a checkbox on each row of the datatable as well as four text fields. The checkbox has a valueChangeListener on it as well as one of the text fields. When I click on the checkbox or when I change the value of the text field, the method in the backing bean is being called. However, at the end of the backing bean method, I have a renderResponse call to rerender the screen and it's hanging and never rerendering the screen.
I've also noticed in the debugger, that the backing bean method is being executed at least 3 times --- WHY???
I'm about to toss JSF and go back to Servlets and JSP's, because this lifecycle and phases, etc. is driving me up the wall. If anyone could help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Basically, why can't I get the screen to refresh from my ValueChangeEvent? What would be keeping that from happening?

I get the last line of code in the ValueChangeEvent handling method of the backing bean which is:
FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().renderResponse()
And when I debug it, the next line of code it goes to is the first line of the method and it's like it's in an infinite loop.

WHAT A MESS!!!!

Ok. I have the 20" imac duo intel with the 512mb and 128 video basic system. So By saying that I know a lot of my problems may be solved by getting more ram (which i am doing tomorrow) This is very frustrating. Whenever I launch any adobe program the dock freaks out. I have the dock hid so I have to pull down on the mouse at the bottom of screen for it to appear. So when a adobe program is open the dock will either jump up and down when I try to select another program or it will not appear at all. I have to turn the hiding feature off to change to another program.
And in InDesign when you create a new document the inches are all crazy: for example if you have a document size of 8.5 x 11 it shows up as:

maybe this has something to do with PPC prefs? oh well
Also if I am running itunes, indesign, photoshop, suitcase X1, and safari the machine runs STUPID SLOW. (before you say it, I know that more ram will help this issue.) BUT my 900mhz ibook will run the ENTIRE SUITE and other programs all at once and it works fine!!! What GIVES.
Here's the deal. I was using my ibook but as all of know the logic boards on them are crap. Well the logic board went out AGAIN so I decieded to get a new machine. Because I am freelance designer and I cannot afford to be in the middle of a project again and that freaking thing go out. I know, I know I didn't have to buy the NEW mac but this was the first time that I could afford to get a machine that was up-to-date so I could be ahead of the game this time. Im just wondering if I should have just got the G5 imac.
oh well maybe my ibook will be back in from service soon. At least I know that I can get work done on it. Thats crazy huh? Have a new "fast" imac but deciede to work on the old one.
oh well.
I guess what im asking is there something that I can check? or is it a PowerPC application vs Universal thing or whatever

I think that you made the right choice for a machine, but like for all early adopters, there will be the growing pains of everything catching up. In Steve's Keynote at MacWorld he made it clear that the Adobe products would be running in Rossetta until Adobe ports them to Universal. However, I am sure that tomorrow when you upgrade the RAM you will see a significant improvement. A few folks who have recently received their iMac CDs have reported that they were surprised at how well the Adobe products ran with Rossetta, but they were also probably running one program at a time. If you can find 1 GB sticks for a good price I would max to 2 GB as soon as possible. I'm not well versed in the specifics, but there is an advantage to two matched memeory modules. This is what the documentation says,"For a performance improvement when working with largefiles, configure your iMac with up to 2GB of memory. And if both slots are loaded with an equal amount of RAM, you can take advantage of the system’s dual-channel memory interface for an additional performance boost."
