10.4.11 and Appleworks 6.2.9 and some mystery updates

My software update wants to download and install 10.4.11, but I want to make sure my Appleworks 6.2.9 will still work before I install the update because I have no desire want so ever to move to iWorks etc. which are just far inferior to Appleworks for my uses.
So can I use 10.4.11 without losing Appleworks or not?
Will the updates below help? What are they for anyway, and why can't i find that info before I download them?

The AppleWorks 6.2.9 Update will do absolutely nothing on your already installed AppleWorks 6.2.9.
Its task is to update old AppleWorks 6 versions (6.0 thru 6.2.8).

  • Pages 5.0 and Appleworks

One of my "older" friends wanted to update his iMac to Mavericks. He was still using Appleworks (with Snow Leopard) and had a bunch of Appleworks documents that he wanted to keep. I explained to him that Appleworks won't work in Mavericks and I recommended he download Pages. I have Pages '09 and it opens Applework documents and converts them to .pages format.
He downloaded the latest version of Pages. He tells me that he can't open Appleworks documents. I just took it for granted that that Apple would update a word processing app that would work with another Apple product... my mistake.
Why would "they" create a version that won't even open an Appleworks word processing file and convert it to Pages format?
Does the "new" Pages open older Pages documents?
What a crock of s___t! It's very disappointing.

VikingOSX's suggestions are valid, but I suggest looking a little further.
LibreOffice 4.2 [free] is developing very nicely and works with open file standards and has a respect for older formats.
It is developed by users for users and the developers certainly keep them foremost in their considerations. Being non-commercial they do not have the same management pressures for "new", "improved" features and product churn. They are constantly working on converting more legacy file formats such as AppleWorks, ClarisWorks, WordPerfect etc. It will even import pdf files.
It comes in Windows, Mac and Linux versions and does not have heavy hardware or OS requirements. The Mac version still works with Snow Leopard and there are prior versions available for older systems.
It's language support is leagues ahead of Apples, and contains Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Drawing, Maths, Presentation & Database. It supports both rtf and odf files ensuring they can be opened in the future.
It supports right to left langauges such as Arabic and Hebrew, correctly, including inserted left to right languages. Also Hindi, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, with dictionaries for most languages.
It has clip-art, a Template Centre and an Extension Centre to give it added functionality.
Whilst it lacks some of the polish of Pages in some areas, it far exceeds Pages in ultimate usability and durability.
Most of all it has a future, undivorced from its past files.

  • Snow Leopard and Appleworks not working well together ...

Still a dedicated fan of Appleworks mostly because I use the vector drawing program for my design business. But, even though it works in OSX.6, it is much changed. The drag-drop images from web sites print out in dot-matrix quality. Every clicked on object becomes a "grouped picture". Therefore the object has to be ungrouped and then regrouped. The resize and rotate tools don't work. If there were other great drawing programs out there I would consider them, but I am considering going back to OSX.5. Also finding that some web sites don't like OSX.6 with Safari and my HP printers have terrible quality now and HP will not support Snow Leopard and older printers. Any other Appleworks users having problems? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them. You should also do this every time AppleWorks crashes as each crash will cause some corruption of the preferences. This may fix the resize & rotate issues.
AppleWorks changes the resolution of all graphic formats except PICT to 72 dpi. There are a couple of things you can do improve the print quality of images.
    1. Turn on Fractional Character widths in Preferences > General > Topic: Text. This is a text setting, but it does improve the print quality of images.
    2. Open the image in Preview or GraphicConverter & Save As... a PICT to use in AppleWorks.
PICT is generally the best format to use for inserting or pasting into AppleWorks. I find the resulting graphic can be resized somewhat & the resulting saved AW file is much smaller than if using JPEG or TIFF.

  • How can I transfer older Claris Works and AppleWorks files to new iMac.  I use Pages, and MacWord, Excel, etc. as well.

    March 20, 2013
I have a new iMac using Pages and Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. for mac.  I'd like to transfer older ClarisWorks and AppleWorks files to my new computer.  Can this be done?

Additionally, Numbers can read/open spreadsheets. However, anything done in the drawing/painting part cannot be read by any application - you would have to export those (on the old machine) as a .jpg or pdf. You could then open them, but no longer edit or change the content.

  • IWork and AppleWorks Conflict?

A friend said she lost all her AppleWorks docs (word processing and spreadsheets) when she loaded iWork'09. This is making me hesitant to load my new iWork software. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening?

As a text document is the same object when it is generated by AppleWorks or by an other program, you perfectly understood that I was writing about AppleWorks 6 Word Processor documents.
It's funny to see that you feel useful to point that when I just reproduced _YOUR OWN_ formula
Pages will open v6 AppleWorks text documents
but sure, you didn't remember what you wrote.
and btw I have asked in another 3 AppleStores (I have just been interstate for a week) about Word compatibility and output suitable for commercial offset printers.
The one variation I got was one (only one) Apple representative said I may lose some word wrap in .doc files, but otherwise the Pages output was no trouble for either saving to Windows or commercial printing.
I asked twice just to make sure they hadn't misunderstood and they were adamant there was no problem.
It simply proves that I am right when I write that we can't take vendor's responses as the truth. My father taught me that they are at least two synonymous to lyer. They are vendor and advocate

Never trust a vendor's response. Check the printed items.
But as I often wrote, you are perfectly free to take care of vendor's advice and re even free to rant here when you discover that the truth is different of what was responded.
But, don't be surprised if I point the fact that if the vendors did what they are supposed to do: push you to buy, YOU didn't do correctly your customer's duty..

  • Leopard 10.5.4 and Appleworks Starting Points

I am a teacher and love using Appleworks 6.2.9 Starting Points Calendars but with my new Imac/Intel I can't seem to get it to work. I keep getting that file cannot be converted to an Appleworks document. Can anyone give me information as to how to get this to work?

"I open AW, then go to File and plug down to Show Starting Points, click on it. Briefly I see the Starting Points box show up on the screen, then the screen shows up saying that file cannot be opened and do I want to report the problem to Apple. AW always quits at that point.
This is a far different statement from your original "I can't seem to get it [AppleWorks 6.2.9 Starting Points Calendar] to work. I keep getting that file cannot be converted to an Appleworks document."
If AppleWorks quits with a File cannot be opened" message while trying to open the Starting Points windows, that would indicate a problem with one of the files or folders in Starting Points. see below for some trouble-shooting steps.
I have tried to start up Calendar Asst from the hard drive list and it bounces me out and says cannot open file, do I want to report the problem to Apple. The error message is the same whether opening it from AW or the hard drive. "
This is normal behaviour. As I said earlier, the Assistants cannot be opened from the Finder, only from within AppleWorks. Trying to open an Assistant from the finder will result in the "cannot be converted" message you mentioned earlier. In AW 6, that means only from within Starting Points. (In the previous version Assistants and Templates were a menu item in the File menu.)
    Trouble-shooting steps:
Qujit AppleWorks before each of these steps. At the end of each step, launch AppleWorks. If AW launches successfully, it indicates the problem lies within one of the folders/files removed during the step just finished; Go to "Successful launch?" If AppleWorks Quits with the same error message as before, continue with the next numbered step.
    1
I would start with a maintenance step: Trash the contents of AppleWorks's Recent Items folder(s).
Go to Mac HD > Users > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items. Drag all or most of the items in this folder to the Trash. (The items are aliases to the named files. Deleting them has no effect on the files themselves.) Close the Recent Items folder.
Create a New Folder on the Desktop. Name it AWUD, and drag all of the folders in AppleWorks User Data into the new AWUD folder.
    2.
Create a New Folder, SP, on the Desktop. Go to Applications > AppleWorks 6 > Starting Points
Drag the first two folders (Assistants and Backgrounds) into the new SD folder.
    3.
Drag the next two folders from Starting Points into SP.
    4.
Repeat step 3 until all Starting Points folders have been moved into SP.
    Successful launch?
Quit AppleWorks. Return the folders you moved in PREVIOUS steps to their original folders. Leave the items you moved in the most recent step in the folder where you put them. Launch AppleWorks.
A successful launch confirms the problem lies in one of the folders you removed in the most recent step.
Quit AppleWorks. Return one of the folders to its original folder. Launch AppleWorks. Repeat with the remaining folder(s) until AppleWorks quits as before.
Once you have located the folder containing the problem file, do a similar search of the files in that folder. Open the folder, drag half of the files it contains into one of the (now empty) new folders you created, then re launch AppleWorks. Put half the removed files back and launch again. Repeat until you locate the single file causing trouble.
If it's one that you do not use, trash it. If you do want to continue using it, it will probably be necessary to re-install AppleWorks from your original disks.

    Barry

  • Getting an Intel iMac up and running from G5 software and data

Towards the end of this year I will be updating from a G5 iSight to whatever mid-model new iMac is available. I will be doing this solely because I want to work extensively with HD video. I have spent an hour or so checking these forums for potential problems and have come up with this scenario. I don't need instructions on how to do things, just an indication on whether this process will work, and if not, where the problems will be.
    *INSTALLING OSX*
Install the latest OSX with all security updates to an OSX-only partition of the internal drive of the new machine.
    *INSTALLING SOFTWARE*
    1. Install the Adobe CS5 suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat and Premiere, though I may choose to use Final Cut instead of Premiere.
    2. Install InDesign CS4. I'm pretty sure it is universal binary, but I'll have to check. I want the CS4 version of InDesign because I have a lot of files in CS4 format and don't want to convert them to InDesign CS5 format – I don't trust the conversion.
    3. Go through every other piece of software I have (including Appleworks, but mostly shareware), and download the latest version, then install that latest version.
    *CONNECTING TO EXTERNAL DRIVES*
All my data files are stored on four external firewire 400 drives (one original, three backups). To continue to use the same disks I will have to purchase a +Firewire 800 (9 pin) to Firewire 400 (6 pin)+ cable for each drive. To use them I will simply plug in the new cables, boot the new machine, and a minute later four external drives should appear on my desktop.
    *CLONING OSX & SOFTWARE*
Use +Disk Utility+ to create a disk image of the entire OSX-only partition, and prepare the disk image for restore ( +Images > Scan Image For Restore+ ).
*RESTORING OSX TO AN EXTERNAL PARTITION*
Use +Disk Utility+ to restore the disk image to an OSX-only partition on an external drive.
    *BOOTING FROM THE EXTERNAL DRIVE*
Set the +Startup Disk+ to the new OSX-only external partition, and restart.
*QUES 1*: Which of the above steps (if any) will be problematic on my new iMac?
*QUES 2*: If I buy a new Firewire 800 external drive and make it the first in the chain, but all the other disks are still 400, does that faster "first link" actually work faster? Or would it somehow be limited by the other "400" links behind it?
*QUES 3*: Maybe I only need to buy one new cable. An 800/400 from the iMac to the first disk; and after that use my existing 400/400 cables. Would that work?

Thanks for the comments, David. I didn't realize you could buy a hub. Which method would result in the fastest overall transfer of data (assuming several of the "400" drives may be being accessed at once): a hub or daisy chain? Or wouldn't there be any difference?
I partition all my drives to have an OSX-only partition and a data partition. That way I can restore OSX if I ever need to (usually takes about 5-10 minutes from a disk image) and I don't have to concern myself about the data. None of my data is ever stored on the OSX partition. I do this because if I'm in the middle of a project, the last thing I want to be involved with is OSX or software hassles. I don't fool around when I have hassles. If OSX or the software plays up, I just restore from a clean OSX.
Reminds me of that old joke. Newly weds are in a horse and carriage on their honeymoon. Horse plays up so the farmer gets out and says" "That's once". Horse does it again a bit down the track and gets told: "That's twice". The third time the farmer gets a gun and shoots the horse. Wife is in shock: "Why did you do that?". The husband responds: "That's once."
Anyway, I treat OSX as the farmer treated his horse – except OSX doesn't get any chances at all. I just put an ailing OSX or software out of its misery and restore. Thus the OSX-only partition.

Unfortunately what you need is something that is designed for PowerPC Macs.  Stuff that is designed for Intel Macs will not work.  The PowerPC (PPC) Mac software is getting scarcer.    Macs in 2006 shifted to Intel CPUs.  Stuff that is designated Universal will work, and you can buy the retail 10.5 if you have no Mac OS 9 related software that needs to load.  If you partition your hard disk, or use an external Firewire hard drive partition just for booting into 10.4.11 or earlier, you can still use Classic for Mac OS 9.  My user tip here discusses your options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2275
Don't dump your PowerPC Mac yet, Appleworks has no equivalent in the Intel Mac world once upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7 or later, and this tip covers Appleworks:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2522
So you are unfortunately stuck in the transition period, but if carefully reviewed can be done right if you ready all your documents for the transition when you can afford it.

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

  • HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool  to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.

There probably is, but it requires that you be able to use punctuation and write in sentences so that we can understand exactly what you want.
You can block others from using your Apple ID by changing your password.  There is no way to erase what was already downloaded on to someone else's device, for obvious reasons,
