10.4.11 and "un-openable websites"

Hello
Last night, I updated to Mac OS 10.4.11, via Software Update, on both my PowerBook and my G4. Yesterday, before the update, I didn't have any issues connecting to any websites. After the update, I can open anything I want - except for a site or two. Specifically, the Oklahoma Mesonet site, http://mesonet.ou.edu/, will not open. Safari gives a "server didn't respond" error, while Firefox gives a "The connection has timed out" error. Both are fully up to date.
I tried several things to fix it:
1. Clear Safari's cache and other temp files. No luck.
2. Reboot. No luck.
3. Try Firefox. No luck! This rules out Safari as the problem.
4. Clear prefs for Safari and Firefox. No luck.
5. Call friends in Texas with fully updated G5 (running 10.4.11) - no problems whatsoever. This rules out server downtime.
I figure that this problem is in one of two places: Mac OS 10.4.11 on my Macs, or in the Network at my apartment. I eliminated my Wifi router as the problem, as the wifi hotspot here in the apartment complex isn't any better. I plan on finding a hotspot elsewhere today, to try and eliminate the apartment's network entirely. I can't figure out why the system update would cause the network to have issues with just one site...
One last thought: Could it be a system preferences or network config preferences problem? Where are those stored?
Any ideas?
-Dan

Very informative, thanks.
No luck, however. I typed in the first command you suggested, redirecting the output to those /tmp/ files. It created the files, but then "froze" - and wouldn't give me another command prompt.
I tried "curl --verbose http://mesonet.ou.edu/" and got this:
(computer name here)% curl --verbose http://mesonet.ou.edu/
* About to connect() to mesonet.ou.edu port 80
* Trying 129.15.195.37... * Operation timed out
* Trying 129.15.195.36... * Operation timed out
* couldn't connect to host
* Closing connection #0
curl: (7) couldn't connect to host
This was displayed in the terminal window. THis is also pretty much what Safari says - "the server has stopped responding".
I also noticed that it moved, but http://www.mesonet.org/ won't work either, with the same "server has stopped responding" message. A few other interesting things I've tried/discovered:
Several other sites I've visited show diagrams from the Mesonet site. That is, they link to the image on the Mesonet website so it is displayed on a different page. Unfortunately, the site will load - but the image will not.
The OCS (Oklahoma Climatological Survey - parent group of the Mesonet) has created a standalone program called "Weather Scope" - which pulls data from Mesonet.org and displays it in a much more customizable format. It can't find the data either. It's console log has similar "not found" or "timed out" style errors.
Furthermore, to eliminate the Macs entirely, I tried using the browser on my Nintendo Wii - which couldn't load the site. Wierd. The Wii is currently networked to my WiFi router, so this doesn't rule out the router, but it does rule out the macs. I tried rebooting the router, and it didn't work. I made sure the router was not blocking any websites, etc - it's not - and rebooted it. It still didn't work. Very odd.
I think this may be an issue with the Mesonet server itself - although why my friends in Texas can see it while I can't despite being just a short distance away, is baffling.
Thanks for the help!

  • When I click on links in websites the links don't work unless I right click and choose open website in another tab/window. This is even a problem on the Firefox page.

When I try to open a link on any page/website Firefox does not open the link. It doesn't even "work" at opening the link, it just sits idling. I have to right click and choose "open link in new tab/window" in order for Firefox to open the link. It doesn't happen 100% of the time but happens especially if there is a button or picture that must be clicked. Simple text links seem to work more often then button or picture links. One example provided below. When you click on the "launch Jumpstart" button it will not open unless you right click & open new. This also happens from my Yahoo! Email account, on Facebook, Cructhfield.com and other websites with "button" related links.

I have the same problem but it appears that an add-on I'm using is causing the problem. Try opening Firefox in safe mode (which disables add-ons) Then try it. If that solves the problem, you need to disable all your add ons and enable them one by one to figure out which one(s) is causing the problem.

  • I just upgraded to iOS 6, and a particular website I always use for school (blackboard) now crashes every time I try to open it. How can this be fixed?

Hi. I just upgraded my iPad 2 to the new iOS 6, and now a website that I use all the time for school is crashing every time I open it to get to my classes and assignments. This is very frustrating since I use my iPad frequently during school. I've already tried rebooting my iPad and closing all applications, and clearing cookies in Safari, nothing has fixed this so far. I feel like it must be related to the update since this did not happen before yesterday when I updated. :( please help!

The problem is with facebook, go to settings / facebook / your user name and delete your account, the do a hard reset (home+power for some seconds).
dont need to delete the facebook app! just delete your integrate account from settings
    cheers!

  • I am a new mac user and have a 15 macbook pro (non retina display).  I am having an issue with safari "freezing" ...it will work fine for a while and then I will open a new tab and attempt a website that won't load and after that it seems no website will.

So yes like mentioned above...i am a new mac user...have only had it about four days and have had a windows based system always before this.  The issue I am having is that I will be in safari and it will work perfect for a while and then i will open a new tab and attempt another website and it will either be extremely slow or will give the error that it cannot connect to the server, however, when i run diagnostics my internet is fine.  The only solution i have found is to reboot and geeksquad has been unable to replicate the problem while connected to my computer to try to do so.  Does anyone have any suggestions or anyone else with this problem?  If you have a "fix" please try layman's terms because again I have no idea about macs haha.  Thanks,

If the previous Safari suggestion doesn't work try the following:
In Finder, go to Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins and move AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin to the Disabled Plug-ins Folder.  Restart Safari.  If this works you may just want to delete that FUBAR plug-in.
Thanks.  This was the solution for me.

Empty the Safari cache more often.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • My school has a website.  The professor uploads files in Word.  When I click on the link at home using Pages, the download window opens with nothing in it and Safari opens with a blank in the address book.  What Could be wrong?  Wrong set up?

    Hi Jo,
If I'm interpreting this correctly, the Word file downloads correctly, but when you open it in Pages, the link(s) which your instructor has embedded in the Word file are not correctly translated into Pages.
If the link shows the actual address, you should be able to copy that and paste it into the location bar in Safari, press return, and get to the website that way.
An alternate route might be to download one of the open source Office applications, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, or NeoOffice. These are written to more closely emulate the behaviours of MS Word than Pages, and may provide better support for links embedded in Word files.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Double clicking or clicking anywhere in Safari opens new tab with Mackeeper and other unknown websites.

The solution provided in the other discussions are not working for me. The 'vsearch' solution given in other discussions doesnt work.
I dont know what I have downloaded but now whenever I type anything in safari or click or double click then a new tab opens with mackeeper link and other unknown websites.
    Thanks in Advance.

You may have some other adware besides Downlite (aka VSearch). In addition, you may have a newer variant of Downlite, which is using a variety of new names after having the last two variants blocked by the anti-malware feature built into Mac OS X.
Your profile indicates you are running Mac OS X 10.6.7, in which case you will not be able to use dominic23's suggestion (AdwareMedic requires 10.7 or later). Apple's support document on removing adware may help, but you'll find a more complete list of adware in my Adware Removal Guide.
You may also have a variant of Downlite that is not described in any of these documents and that is not yet recognized by AdwareMedic. I believe that there is a new variant that uses a variety of different names based on unknown criteria, either defined by different installers or determined at install time by some characteristic of the machine that it is installed on. Look in the following folders:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
If you find a file named "com.xxx.agent.plist" (where the "xxx" part can be anything) in the first folder and files named "com.xxx.daemon.plist" and "com.xxx.helper.plist" in the second, please report back here for further advice.

  • Appstore dosent work and Safari dont open Websites

    Hi Everybody,
i have update my Ipad Mini to IOS7. After a few days i cant use the appstore and safari anymore. I can not open the Appstore. The Site is loading again and again until this message is viewed "Connection to Appstore is not possible".
Beneath this, safari cant open websites. Only google is working. I can search für some notes, but if i want to open it, its loading again and the sites not viewed.
Some  Apps are working. Like Youtube per example. I can watch videos without problems. I already restart the ipadmini and shut it down but nothing helps at the moment.
Also, i have try to recover my ipad mini over itunes but i cant disable "search my ipad" by the icloud category. I get the message "checking failed, timeout by requirement".
I hope my english is not very bad. iam german.
thanx and i hope you guys can help me.
    Daniel

    Daniel
Your English is fine. Much better than German for sure.
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

    Hi,
is there a way to create a bookmark that changes to download folder to a known location and the open a website, like a normal bookmark would do.
i think the browser.download.dir; option in about:config is the right one.
    examle:
    1. click the bookmarklet
    2. change the folder to d:\temp\asdfasdf
    3. open the website http://www.asdfasdf.com

Sound like a damaged library. Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
