10.4.11 Combo Updater (Intel) just hangs, doesn't continue...

I have 10.4.11 installed already, but have been having major problems with crashing applications -- Software Updater and all of the browsers -- so on the advice of someone on another thread, I downloaded the combo updater and was going to install that. The application opens just fine, but when I click "continue," it doesn't do anything... it just sits there...
What should I do? I'm so frustrated because when I try to solve any one problem, it just seems to uncover another problem, and I don't know what else to try!
Thanks in advance to any kind hearted souls with advice!

THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

  • 10.4.9 Combo Update (Intel) Problem !!!!

    Hello people
i have a 8 core mac pro and it came with pre installed 10.4.9 .
I want to apply a 10.4.9 combo update as for Protools and the other softwares are requering for this clean update.
    I downloaded combo intel update , but when i try to make it , it keeps saying ;
''you cannot install mac osx update combine (intel) on this volume . This volume does not meet the requirements for this update''
I really dont understand it . Any one knows the solution ???
    Thanks in advance .

You can't install the 10.4.9 combo update because you
    are already at 10.4.9
Normally, you should be able to run a combo updater with the same OS version number as the currently installed OS version as many times as you wish (assuming it is for the same type of hardware, PPC or Intel, of course).
The exception is when the combo updater is older than the actual version of the OS installed on the Mac. This can happen because Apple occasionally releases new models that require new extensions to function. The version of the OS supplied with those models is a new build including those extensions. The previously released updater does not include those new extensions & thus cannot install that build of the OS, so you get the error message.

  • Updated to 10.5.7 via Combo Update, FCSvr Desktop App doesn't open

Last week I updated two Dual G5 2.5's to 10.5.7 via the Combo Update. Upon completion, the Final Cut Server.app desktop application wouldn't open. I tried re-downloading the app from our server, and my machine opened the Final Cut Server.jnlp file in TextEdit as if Java wasn't installed. So I downloaded the Java Update 4 for 10.5 from Apple. Now I can run the Final Cut Server application only if I open the Final Cut Server.jnlp file. I deleted the Final Cut Server.app, and cleared all cache files using Java Preferences in the Utilities folder (I no longer have a Java folder there, just the Java Preferences app) and reinstalled the Final Cut Server.app, so I'd have a fresh app. Still doesn't work. When I double-click it, the icon expands but nothing happens. In my console, I get this message:

I have tried deleting com.apple.java.JavaPreferences.plist and com.apple.java.util.prefs.plist to no avail.
I get the same results on both machines. I have searched and found no answers. Again, if I open the Final Cut Server.jnlp java file itself, it works. It's not a huge deal, but I'd like to fix if possible.

Done. Deleted all files mentioned. Then downloaded and reinstalled the update 4. No change whatsoever.
I really thought this would work though. The Final Cut Server program redownloaded, prompted me to install the desktop app, which I did, and then gave me the initial licensing agreement. Final Cut Server opened, but then when I quit it and tried to open it via the new desktop app, I got this in the console:

  • Safari 3.2.1 Update won't apply - system just hangs

I seem to have a problem and although I have looked at various posts on several message boards, I can't find anyone with the same problem, which is:
I have all the latest updates, except for the latest Safari 3.2.1, but when I re-start to install the update, it just hangs.
I've re-started several times, but same problem.
My current version is Version 3.2 (5525.26.12)
and Software Update says that I still need to update to 3.2.1.
I don't have any other issues with current version. I downloaded the 3.2.1 original update a week or two ago and it has been running OK, although I did have a similar problem when I first tried to update to it, but it worked eventually.
    Any ideas ?

    Here's what you should do:
    1. Repair Permissions.
    2. Download and install the 10.5.5 Combo Update.
    3. Download and install Safari 3.2.1. *Do Not Use* the Safari update; delete it.
    4. Repair Permissions again.
    5. Launch Safari, disable the "Warn before visiting a fraudulent web site" feature in Preferences > Security and see if it works normally for you.
    6. If it crashes, post the crash report.

  • To combo update.... or not?

I've read several threads about the pros and cons of using the combo updates vs. the single updates ( such as 10.5.4 combo update or just the single 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 updater). I'm still a little uncertain about which is best. So I started this thread to ask the gurus to once again post their advice. Sorry if I'm being repetitive but just trying to clear this up. I'm currently running Leopard 10.5.3 on a MacBook Pro with no problems.

My preference is to let Software Update do the heavy lifting. Plus, it shuts down some services before installing any updates. Here's a snippet from my system.log when I installed the 10.5.4 patch this morning.

  • Microsoft Office 2004 still hanging after Rosetta and Combo Update

I have been running MO 2004 on my intel Mac for the past 6 mo without any issues.  Recently it has begun to hang one program at at time.  Beginning with PPT, then Excel, Word, and now Entourage.  I did some searching and saw an article on Rosetta.  I installed it from the DVD and installed the combo update 10.6.8.  On restart everything worked perfectly.  Each program all started up.  I closed them back out and went to restart them again...just to be sure.  They all are hanging again.  What is happening, what can I do?  Many thanks, JD

I also had this problem with Office 2004
    I repaired permissions
    Deduplicated fonts
    Updated to Office 11.6.6
Seemed to help Word/Excel but Powerpoint still hanging
baltwo - thankyou I followed your advice and ppt opened fine under the new administrator account.
What now? Do I migrate all my stuff to the new account? If so how do I do that?
Incidentally my Adobe CS2 programs had started to hang too. Reinstalling from disc did not help. Then I found free CS2 downloads including serial numbers from Adobe and that fixed them.

  • My I Mac showed an error while updating the OS and now just hangs. What should I do?

I Mac asked me to update the OS from 10.7.3. It showed an error and now the computer just hangs. Its become excuriatingly slow. Takes about 15-20 minutes to boot up and takes hours to perform any function. I tried to update the OS again but it keeps showing an error in connecting to the server. What do I do.?

Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD to check/repair your disk. Restart holding Command+R - once booted select Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click on 'repair disk' If it fixes anything click repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Whilst in Disk Utility you could also 'repair disk permissions' With Macintosh HD still selected click on 'repair disk permissions'. Once done, restart as normal from the Apple menu.
Then try updating again using the 'combo', available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582
If you still have problems you could try a Safe Boot: restart holding down the shift key until you see the grey progress bar. Once booted restart as normal from the Apple menu.

  • Hangs at boot after 10.5.8 combo update

    hi all,
i just updated from 10.5.1 to 10.5.8 with the combo update. it now will just hang at the apple logo. i have a dual boot on the same drive with 10.4.11 thus i am able to post this.. disk utility finds no errors. reinstalling is last resort..
see my sig for computer specs.
    thx in advanced

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • IMovie won't open on Mac Pro (Intel, 10.5.3) -- just hangs

I don't normally use iMovie but tried to open it today on my MacPro and strangely it just hangs while launching.
I reinstalled from the discs that came with the computer, but that made no difference. I deleted iPhoto and iMovie preference files, but that made no difference. I've even turned off Little Snitch as I saw on the web that there was a potential conflict there. I've run software upgrade and everything is apparently up to date (iMovie is version 7.1.1) I have also looked at the package contents for iMovie as suggested on another site, but everything seems to be there.
I have no idea why the application won't run. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is there another conflict between iMovie and any other known applications?
    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • Mac Pro won't boot to disk array after Mac OS 10.6.8 combo update. Array two partition are there, just won't start off them anymore. Help, please

My 2009 Mac Pro with Highpoint RocketRAID 3522 would no longer boot of the disk array as it had before. Boots off internal HD (still running 10.6.2), sees the array in the Finder, both volumes there pass Disk Utility Repair Disk tests, they show up in System Preferences - Startup Disk. TechTool Pro 5.0.7 sees nothing wrong with the primary boot partition. (didn't try the clone still with 10.6.7) **** frustrating. Tried reinstalling latest firmware for card. Nothing reported by the drives in way of any failure. zapped the PRAM, tried booting with option key, it doesn't show the array but two copies of the internal HD. Running out of ideas. Any out there?

I am having the same problem with my HPT 4321.  After upgrade, wont boot.  Shows up everyone as bootable disk (even when holding option at startup) but Mac will not boot off it.  I installed a fresh 10.6.8 copy onto a usb drive and HPT drivers work so might just be something to do with the main drive being bootable.  To complicate things, the Snow Leopard DVD doesn't have the drivers to see the array so cannot use it for troubleshooting.  It will not start in safe mode. Downloaded combo updater to try and re-update but it doesn't let you install it on another drive.  HPT driver installer doesn't allow you to install on another drive so also can't re-install driver.  Only choice seems to be install OS on new disk and recreate everything from scratch, then SuperDuper back to HPT drives and hope that it was a corruption during the update but not sure that it will boot even after all that work.
Anyone have a working computer with 10.6.8 and booting off a Highpoint RAID card?

Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save to disc, Flash drive/s or to ext. hard drive.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Also, if you save old downloaded  .dmg application installer  files, you can either archive and delete these or just delete the ones you think you'll never install, again.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be thinned out, moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • New updates not working just hangs

When my 'update firefox' message comes up the bar shows download happening but then just hangs showing the little blue bars - if left can go on for days with nothing actually happening.

I have installed 18.0.2 several times now and all I get is Norton popping up telling me updater is safe but then nothing, the only way I can get Firefox to start is by deleting the updater files, any ideas how to fix this?
I have never had any problems with Firefox in the past

  • Neither Firefox nor Thunderbird update automatically even though the settings are correct; the udates just "hang"

    I have a MacBook Pro 13 10.7.5
neither of the program Updates for Firefox or Thunderbird complete the process; I have set for automatic updates; the message shows and say it is/they are updating but it just "hangs"
    firewall is ON

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 17.0.1: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application (e.g. open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
