10.4.11 crash problem--can I install Leopard to overcome

Like many other users, my MacBook is inoperable after the abortive installation of 10.4.11--all the same symptoms and the spinning ball of death on the white opening screen. I am on the road (in a country without full Apple support). I do not have my Tiger installation disks nor any other possible help. BUT I do have a Leopard installation disk. Is there any way I can install Leopard without first starting in Tiger? This may be a dumb question, but I'm desperate. Any suggestions would help.

Boot to the install disk and choose Utilities>Disk Utility.
Choose Repair Disk.
If the disk is able to repair or no repair is necessary you can simply Archive and Install and preserve user and network settings.
You will be installing a new OS which should not have the same problem.
This is unlikely to be a problem with your user or network settings.

+Just got off the phone with apple support, because I had the same problem. What the problem is here is that the installer looks at the System Profiler to gather this information to make sure that it meets the requirements. Since these upgrades are not yet supported it reads 0mhz processor speed, if it's under 867mhz, it won't install.+
That's is my problem to start with!
I have 2 internal 120GB HD's, the one set as a master runs Tiger and the one set as a slave
have 4 partitions of which 3 partitions are running OS9, Panther, Tiger
and one partition I left to install Leopard.
When I try to install Leopard a pop up window comes
telling me that I can't install it on this computer,
utilities of the Installation disc will read 0MHz.
Try booting from a "virgin" Tiger, just bare OS on the separate drive and partition,
    same thing will happened.
    some solutions I find @ XLR8 :
    [URL] http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/OSX_Leopard_feedbacktips.html#storytop
    But, no joy, just yet.
    Never give up!!!
Yes, processor upgrade is not from Apple, but Apple should be more helpful.
If somebody who had a luck with straight install, can put some words of to this post.

  • Can I install Leopard on an external drive to run my computer?

Since it seems my hard drive has totally bit the dust, can I install Leopard on the external drive I use for Time Machine, and run my desktop from that drive? Could I run it from an external drive totally dedicated to Leopard? I am buying a new desktop soon, but I need info off of this machine. Can I plug in my Time Machine drive to my laptop and be able to use it without losing data?

    Thanks so much.
    Youa re welcome!
I figured I would have to use a second drive. At least when I get my new desktop I will have a drive for Time Machine for both desktop and laptop.
If you really plan to keep the laptop around after you get your desktop, I would recommend replacing its internal hard drive. While running your laptop off an external is possible, it should be considered a stopgap measure. i wouldn't do it on a permanent basis. For one, as you'll find out, it's quite a bit slower than when using the internal drive.

  • Can you install leopard from an external usb disc drive?

I don't know if the disc drive is fast enough for leopard or something. It's taking forever to open the installer, and when I restarted into the installer it just booted back to my desktop. I have an external disc drive I want to try. Can you install leopard from and external disc drive?

****, I just tried it and when I restarted it didn't go into the installer. I think my disc drive in my old mac mini might be too slow. It takes forever to recognize the disc and just to double click on it and it up. And when I tried to install it the first time from the internal drive it just booted right into my desktop again.

  • The old permissions problem - Can't install Flash

I know this is an old problem but I have tried every remedy in the book and some I never heard of.  I simply cannot get access to the old dll file.
Vista tells me I don't even have permission to view the permissions of this object.  So, to put it simply I can't install Flash 10.1 and the old one has been uninstalled except for the troublesome dll file.
I have tried every method of either lowering the permission level or raising my authority without success. I have even tried some risky approaches.  Is there a way to force the installer to install the new version to a new location?
    TIA.
[I have spent hours on this both yesterday and today.]

Hi, Forgive me for omitting the essential info. I am running Vista Home
Premium (32bit), My primary browser is Opera 10.61.   I also have a
recent version of Chrome and IE 8 on my machine.
The error message on installing Flash 10 is that it doesn't have
    sufficient permissions to write to
    Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\NSPWF.dll:5).
Since my previous note,I have temporarily solved the problem by
downloading the xpi version of Flash and putting the appropriate files
in the Opera plugins directory. However that does not solve the problem
    for Crhome or IE8.
The larger problem is that I have run the installer as administrator,
logged on as administrator, tried changing the properties and owner of
the dll file and the entire Macromed folder.  I even tried renaming the
folder. Permission is always denied.  The most offending notice is one
that tells me that I don't even have permission to see or edit the
    permissions of the dll.
Note: I did check to make sure that no identifiable processes were
running that would not let me access the dll.
    Thanks.

  • Installation problem; can't install anything after failed install

    Hi everybody,
I have just changed computer and I tried to instal Cubase LE4 on my new macbook air running on OS X Mavericks (10.9.2).
I have encouter similar problems of others that tried the same operation on SL years ago, namely: when the installation started, it went well, but in the end it will say 'install time remaining; about a minute'. No matter how long I leave it (literally hours), the loading bar won't move an inch, even though it looks like it's loading.
Now I have to force quit to get rid of the screen.
However every time I try to install something else the problem is still there. The installer tells application says: "Waiting for other installetion to complete".
I can't install any other program.
Here's the link to the old post:

The solution proposed on that post do not work for me unfortunately.  I was wondering if anybody has some new solutions.

  • Installation problems: can't install anything after failed install.

I believe this may have been posted before, but I have a different OS than in the question I read so I thought I should ask again.
I have a Macbook Pro running OS X Lion (late 2011) and a while ago I was dumb and decided to install old Cubase LE 4 software onto my brand new Macbook. The installation stalled with "less than one minute remaining", I force quit, tried several more times, and ever since then I can't install anything else. I heard of some hotfix that can remedy this problem, but since I have the new OS I was wondering if that would still work.
    Any suggestions/answers are greatly appreciated.

  • Possible HD problem: Can't install sofware, each time Disk Utility boots up

Each time i click on a Dmg file to try and install some software it goes right to the Disk Utility program. The best I can do is click "Verify Disk" which works out ok but still can't install the software.
My HD is almost full using 106 of 111 available gigs leaving me only about 5 gig free space. Is there some disk utility I could run to figure it out? Perhaps some program like Dfrag for the mac. I tried to download & install iDfrag but again, I was stuck at the Disk Utility that boots up after downloading it and clicking to install.

I ended up buying a 500 GB Apple HD that had been in a macbook pro previously. The guy I bought it from for $105 told me it has SnowL mac OS already on it.
He also told me that I could easily clone my current drive on this drive by using Carbon Copy on this Bomb Bich site: http://www.bombich.com/
I downloaded the app but haven't ran it or tried to install yet because he told me I need to get an "Enclosure" first from a local store that will run me $17.
I'm about the buy that tomorrow and then go to install it.
He also said I could first try just Copying my couple of programs like Word & Excel over to the new drive and see if it'll work on the new drive. If it does, then I could just Copy the rest of my datafiles over because I don't have much actual software I need on my current drive.
My current OS is OS X ver 10.5.8. but he has the newest Snow Leopard on thenew 500 GB drive I just bought.

  • Mail crashes every time after installing Leopard

    Hey all.
I installed Leopard a couple of days ago. Today I went to my office, where there is a secured wireless network. Mail couldn't connect to the network until I set it up, but in the meantime I had written an email and tried to send it (so it was saved to Drafts). I then quit Mail, set up the network connection, and when I reopened Mail it crashed and has continued to crash every time since then. I get a message repeatedly that says:
"Some actions taken while the account “IMAP Account” was offline could not be completed online.Mail has undone actions on some messages so that you can redo the actions while online. Mail has saved other messages in mailbox “On My Mac” in “On My Mac” so that you can complete the actions while online.
Additional information: The IMAP command “APPEND” (to Drafts) failed with server error: Mailbox does not exist, or must be subscribed to.."
I click okay, the message reappears 5 or 6 times, and then it crashes and closes. When it closes, I get the following error report (it's long): -Please help-!

    Hi,
I am experiencing very similar problems with my wife's new MacBook (for which I unfortunately am the tech support...). She also has an IMAP account, and the problem you describe above occurs on a regular basis (2-3 times a week.) Mail just hangs and nothing can get it back, except deleting the IMAP folder in the Libary/Mail directory, and then re-starting Mail. This doesn't really seem like a good solution to the problem to me, however.
It seems a lot of people have similar problems with Mail and IMAP... I'm glad I still run OS 10.4 on my MacBookPro. No such problems there...

  • I can't install leopard on my powerbook G4

I have all of the system requirements needed to run leopard 10.5 on my computer. First I bought leopard and cleared the disk verification, I get the "base system error." I called for support for 2 hours and the man said it was an error on the installation disk. However, after exchanging it for a new disk I encountered the same error. So I took my laptop down to the store and a genius said it was a problem with the hard drive and that once I got it back leopard would be installed with a new HD. NO, despite the claims on the terms of the apple care contract they had not installed the most recent version of OS X, which I paid for. When I got my laptop back after 2 weeks of ordeals of shop repair, i get back what appears to be my RAM in a bag and a now scratched leopard disk. So I try to install leopard in the store and once I put the disk in the screen turns black with the pin wheel of death. Now it won't even make it to the installation phase! What is going on! They took it back and now I'm out of a computer for another week. So I would appreciate it if anyone knows anything about my problem and what happens if apple is unable to fix my computer. Do I get a new computer that is able to run leopard like apple claims? Do I ask for a refund of my 2000 dollars I paid for the computer? Thank you. <Edited by Moderator>

+"I can't see that it's too much to ask to be able to use those purchases as I wish, do you?"+
You are entitled to use the software that came with your computer +on that computer+. Period. Each machine comes with it's own software. If you want to upgrade the software that came with the computer, you have to pay for the new software. So, in this regard, yes, it's too much to ask. "Piracy" is an accepted term for misusing software in violation of the EULA which you must agree to when you install the software. If you violate the terms of that agreement, you are acting illegally. If you don't want to call it piracy, how about stealing? Ripping off? Whatever. Prisons are full of people who figured the law did not apply to them or that the law was "wrong" or "excessive". But it's still the law....

  • Can't install Leopard on Quad 2.6 10.4.11

Finally made the jump to Leopard because all third party plug-ins I use are now compatible (LP8/Abelton Live). Problem: Can't upgrade to Leopard! I put the Leopard disc in, read the install, clicked on Leopard for restart, waited awhile then got a visual of Leopard's Aurora borealis (whatever it is) backdrop and thats it. There was no install option, 'click here,' 'start,''select folder,' or anything else...only the colorful backdrop. It next took me 5 minutes to reset the computer to revert back to Tiger. Everything works, internet, applications, so forth. I called Apple support spoke to them for about an hour and nothing. I also discovered, I can't even Re-install the older Tiger OS either...Holding down C on start up, it goes straight to the Desk-top...the Install disk will not override the system. I even tried to re-set the e-pram holding Apple/Command P and R and got no results. Tiger or Leopard will not install...yet all software works, internet, etc. I've tried to install from the start up disc, holding down C, holding down option, NOTHING. Any input before I take into Apple and pay $75 per hour. Anyone think Techtool Pro or other utility would help?

I failed to mention that I have already run the Tiger DU and repaired permissions...this did nothing. Pertaining to RAM: Apple service asked me about the RAM as well. This is puzzling...I purchased third party RAM but it is completely Mac compliant as far as I know. It was purchased at Fastermac.com. How does the RAM I installed hinder an OS upgrade. When I installed it, I switched the two 512's behind the two newer 2gigs. Do you think if I switched them around again, that this may help? Someone explain why third party RAM has anything to do with it. The RAM I purchased was matched with the exact Quad Pro I own. I've also disconnected all peripherals before install and this did nothing. There are no third party cards. The DVD seems ok. I've ripped movies and audio and continue to do so...I can also install software and updates to other software...just not Leopard. Lastly, Leopard is a dual layer burn?

  • Can't install Leopard on external drive

After speaking with someone at the Genius Bar last week, we determined that the problem I'm having with my eMac is probably due to the 4-5 year old internal hard drive finally getting ready to give up the ghost. ;-(
I asked if it would make sense to buy an new external drive, load Leopard on that, and boot off that while I save for a new Mac. He suggested that would work. (While the speed might not be ideal over a USB connection, I'm not too concerned with that. As long as the kids can do their homework, and I have a place to store photos it's fine.)
I just got my new external HD, got it partitioned into 3, and am trying to load 10.5.3 on it from my CD so I can make it the boot drive. The problem is that - while all 3 partitions show up on the "list" of places to install, the internal HD is the only one that will let me install on it. The 3 partitions all say that I can't install on them.
Any idea why I can't install on the external, and more importantly, can I work around it somehow before my internal drive dies for good?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi JDB38;
There is no such thing as an Intel G5. It is either one or the other but never both. An Intel tower is a Mac Pro. A G5 is a tower with a PowerPC processor in it. So which do you have?

Try updating your iTunes using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer file downloaded from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does that go through any better for you?
