10.4.11 Install Disk 1 gets stuck

Hey. I just bought a refurbished MacBook, and, to make a long story short, it crashed and burned when I installed the 10.5 update that came with it. So, after talking to Apple a long time because there were some nasty problems, I managed to get the whole hard drive wiped and start the whole install process for 10.4. For some reason, however, the install got stuck in the Essentials at 29% on Disk 1. I tried multiple times to get it to install; I borrowed a friend's install Disks (yes, from the same MacBook model), but they got stuck at 30%. I let both the sets of Install DVDs go through the checking process; I've reset the PRAM; I've done everything I can think of. But it always gets stuck at the same place, and if you listen to the disk drive, you can hear that it's stuck. I'll probably call Apple tomorrow and tell them they need to replace it, but I thought I'd check here first. Any help?

Consider yourself lucky... I'd buy a new Mac tomorrow if it could boot anything other than the worthless Leopard, but they won't due to Firmware changes!
Anyway, if it fails on Zeroing, then yes, it's a bad HD for sure. Maybe Mobo or such, but 2.5" drives are really the pits, ime/imho.

You can copy & remove data from Terminal in Recovery mode but frankly I'd use that as a last resort.
The safest option (make a bootable backup)…
    In Recovery mode, Disk Utility.
Select the restore tab for the Macintosh HD, 'restore' that to a new disk.
Next best option (make a 'restorable' disk image)
    In Recovery mode, Disk Utility.
Select 'File > New image > New image from Folder…'
Select the base of Macintosh HD as the folder
Save that as a compressed disk image on another disk.
You will have a clone of the entire disk inside disk image.
You can also use the second method to make a disk image of particular folders.
I'm not sure if this helps, but it sounds like you may be on the road with limited options?
You could contemplate installing OS X to the 150GB (assuming it is empty). Then you could boot from that if you need to get work done for a few days untill you are able to reinstall the internal disk.
Do you have any other user accounts? There are ways to create them, perhaps it is just your user data that is in a mess? Ask if you want info on that.

  • Can't install. Installation "gets stuck". (Win 7)

    Hi.
We bought Adobe Creative Cloud at my job. The installation went successful on my computer at work (OS X 10.8), but not at home (Win 7).
I  downloaded Adobe Application Manager, and for some reason, Photoshop  installs perfectly. Next up, After Effects stops at 26% installation,  even though I let the computer on for one whole night. Illustrator stops at 34%, and some programs don't even start the installation progress, Premiere, InDesign and Flash for example. I don't get any error messages or anything, everything seems just fine, the installation progress bar just stops moving and the program never installs no matter how long I wait.
I also tried to download After Effects as a trial, but the Adobe Download  Assistant froze. I uninstalled, and tried  again. Same thing happened.
I've uninstalled all old Adobe programs, I've run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool approx. 10 times with no sucess. I'm soon about to reinstall the entire operating system and hope that it helps, but it's a bit tedious, so I'd like to avoid it.
    What more to try?
    Update:
Problem solved. I uninstalled everything related to "Adobe", and  searched my whole computer for anything with "Adobe" and deleted it, and I ran the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, and also cleaned the registry. Then it worked!

No, it tried installing all Broadcom driver from folder ..\..\BootCamp5.0.5033\BootCamp\Drivers\Broadcom which are:

Also none of the above inf files contains Hardware ID "VEN_14E4&DEV_43A0"

Some supported phones are not displaying Firefox in the Market for some reason. We're still investigating this. You can check if your phone is supported here:

    hai clara,
the issue is coz the drive on which ur trying to install has some issues .
    please goto the article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=13628
in most of the cases u would try some third party disk utility like disk warrior and noton disk utility to repair the disk .
then u need to run disk utility from the TIGER disk .
    follow the article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    to repair the disc .
or else u can back up the data on ur HDD and then u need to do an erase and install of TIGER

  • Disk getting stuck on dust guard

Basically, my disk is getting stuck on my dust guard whenever I eject, so it will come out about 1mm but then go straight back inside and load up DVD Watcher. Thanks if you could help me!

Similar thing happening to me, but discs do not even come 1mm out. I purchased my MacBook in 07; does anyone have an estimate on how much it is to have this problem fixed? Would it be covered under a warranty?

  • Updating iphoto to 6.0 on other mac from new install disk?

    Hi,
I have a new mac book and would like to install iphoto 6.0 on my older mac. Can I simply use the newer install disk to get the latest version of iphoto? Or will I have to now buy a full package of iLife?
    Thanks in advance

    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Panther has missing and text on install disk  Help !

I need some help when I boot with either Tiger or my panther install disk I get missing letters in the text . I have a 1ghtz dual quicksilver , 80 gb hard drive ,512 ram , Ge Force 4mx video. I am now running 10.2.8 . I would like to upgrade but this machine has issues . I even tried to boot off of the external firewire disk that I have Panther installed and the same thing appears, missing and garbled text. Please Help !

Try running the hardware tests again, but this time in loop mode and have them run continuously for an hour or so. If you do get any reported error codes, then that indicates a problem. However, usually the error codes include some letters as well as numbers. The former indicate what system reported a problem while the numbers provide an indication of the type or severity of the problem.
The fact that the problem occurs when you boot from an installer disc suggests something hardware related as opposed to a possible problem with your OS X installation. Of course you could simply have a dead internal backup battery or just need to reset the PRAM. If could also be due to the fact that the keyboard you're using is not supported by the version of OS X contained on the installer discs, but is by the version of OS X you have installed.

  • Installation good, but now cannot boot from install disk

Hi I installed leopard via upgrade and install all is working well apart from the occasional sound issue.
however when i try to boot from the leopard install disk I get a kernel panic saying that the computer is not recognized. If i boot from my original disk that came with my computer and run disk utility i get file errors. Should I repair these or will it ruin the leopard file system. And is the leopard install disk only suitable for intel macs.

It sounds like the lens on your optical drive is dirty if you're not getting to the installation menu. Use a cleaning DVD or wrap a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully slide it in and out a few times.

  • Format with snow leopard install disk gets stuck at apple logo

Hi, I have a MacBook pro 17" which I want to format but have no install disks however I gt the mac os x snow leopard 10.6.3 disk from pc world today. I have been trying to format with that disk but every time it gets stuck at the apple logo, my current version is 10.6.6. Any help would be great

Does your machine meet [Snow Leopard system requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html]? What system was on it before, and why are you choosing to reinstall?
Does the disk you have obtained have a picture of a snow leopard on it, or is it gray? The latter will not work.
What model MBP? If it's very recent, the current retail SL disk may not work... only the disk that shipped with your machine will. Call Apple for replacements for a small fee.

  • My macbokp turns on, chimes, then gets stuck on the gray apple page. have tried rebooting from the OS X install disk, no My macbokp turns on, chimes, then gets stuck on the gray apple page. Please help!

Hello.I have a late 2008 model MacBook with snow leopard installed. I'd been having some trouble with it lately, so I went to disk utility and tried to 'repair disk'. It said there was a file system error and it could repair the disk. So I started up from the install disk and tried again...same thing.  Now when I try to turn it on and power it up, it turns on, makes the chime sound and then gets stuck on the gray page with the apple.  I have tried removing the battery, unplugging/replugging power, and  'safe start up mode'. It still won't go past the gray apple page. Please help!!! I'd greatly appreciate any advice or comments! Thanks so much....

If you can boot from the install disk reinstall the operating system and see if it works.

  • I think my hard drive crashed. How can I get data off via firewire before the HD completely goes? I was stuck on the BSoD and now I can't even use the install disk. Utility Disk said HD was okay. Please HELP ME

    Safe mode did nothing.
Safe mode with verbose seemed to make it worse.
Before continuously trying new things, I could use the install disk to check the disk utility and clear
the hard drive from there but now the screen won't even load to that.
I really need the data on the hard drive especially if it can't be salvaged.
    How can i transfer files?
Am I better off physically taking my HD out or will it damage itself without
    leaving the system.
    I tried command r
    resetting the pram
    safe mode
    jumping out a window
    nothing has helped.
I am stuck on the blue screen of death and it flickers.

No. In order to use FireWire Target Disk Mode you need to use a FireWire equipped Mac. Other than that the only other way I can think of to even attempt to access you files would be to remove your hard drive and install it in a case and connect it to another computer.
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

  • Have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!

have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!
The configure bar gets about an 1/8 full and then just does nothing. I think its lists the update as combo update? cant remember with out checking.
I have tried to do the disk verify and repair but this has made no difference.
Please let me know what i need to do, I have reformatted the mac just to start over as was clogged with a lot of useless data, I had installed lion (10.7) from the app store previously and now cant seem to find a way to re install lion. I hope I dont need to pay for it again?

If you erased your hard drive, you'll need to reinstll OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. You won't have to pay for OS X 10.7 Lion again. Did you try booting to the recovery partition by holding the command and r keys down? If that's still there, you can reinstall OS X 10.7 from there.
If you're looking to install the current iTunes, you need OS X 10.6.8 at a minimum.
If you're still trying to update OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can download the combo update from here.  Download, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again. That will take you to OS X 10.5.8.
