10.4.11 logout freeze

All my managed clients now freeze when they logout. This started when I updated the server to 10.4.11 and continued when I updated to workstations to 10.4.11.
However, it only happens when they have a custom desktop picture.
Anyone else with this trouble????
(BTW, I deleted all my users 'desktop plist' file and locked out the System Pref that allows changing the desktop image. Now, everyone is doing just fine)

Hi Brian,
Same thing has been happening to us for a few months, even before 10.4.11. It happens as you say with custom (large desktop pictures), but mainly if they dont quit apps before logout. I have found the biggest culprit to be illustrator CS3 which seems to take ages to quit. No fix though. I use the killall Dock command from ARD to terminate the session, which leaves me believing it is a crashing dock problem. I also believe Dashboard may have something to do with it (it is not on our macs, but always appears in the dock when a user logs on for the first time.
Probably no help, but i thought i would offer up my thoughts/ Experiences on the matter.

  • Logout freezing switching accounts

Have been having occasional freezes when logging out of 1 account & into another (not using fast switching)...just gets to blue screen & then must do hard restart to get out of it...any thoughts to solve? Thanks.

    Hi-
Test Startup and Login items for conflicts as described in this article:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/startupitems.html

  • System Shutdown and User Logout Freeze

Recently my Powerbook 15" G4 (FW800) compute running 10.5.7 has been having issues with both shutting down and switching to a different user from the Finder Apple menu.
You can select "Shutdown" from the Apple Menu and the system appears to close all programs properly including the Finder but my desktop image still appears on the screen and I have to hold down the Power button for about 5-10 seconds to force the computer to turn off.
In addition, if I try to log out of the current user using the Apple menu to try to switch to my other one the system again appears to "hang" with just the desktop image on the screen.
Initially when either of these attempts are being done you can hear disk drive activity but the desktop image stays on the screen even after leaving the computer alone for 10 minutes or more.
I've tried resetting the Parameter Ram at startup and even went as far as trying to reset the PMU by holding down the Open Apple-Control-Shift & Power Button (Apple says to hold down Shift-Control-Option-Power though) and I thought that had fixed the issue but after another reboot the computer is back to just sitting there with the desktop picture on the screen after shutting down.
I've run the computer in "Verbose Mode" and when the computer properly shuts down you can see the desktop photo go away and the verbose mode come up on the screen for a moment before the computer completely shuts down. But recently, after selecting shutdown on the screen, the computer never makes it to the verbose screen meaning "something" is causing it to hang after it closes all the processes but before it gets a chance to get to the verbose screen and close up shop.
Does anyone know of a preference file I can delete or something else I can try to get this computer happy again? Other than the above listed problem the computer works completely fine.
Any suggestions or other people that have had similar experiences are appreciated, thanks!
    Mike

Friend, I feel for you. I have the same problem on two PPC machines. I have watched posts about this problem for about a year now, and I have yet to see anyone come close to a fix.
I'm going to tell you how we keep it from happening 97% of the time (on both our machines). It's really weird, but it works. When we're going to shut down, we open a few folders and let the machine calculate the sizes of the items inside. We use the Applications folder and the Utilities folder for this. Once the machine has shown the sizes of the items in the window, we close the window. Then, from the Apple Menu, we choose Shut Down (or Restart, if that's what we're doing). The dialogue window appears, asking to confirm that is what we want to do. Now, WAIT as it counts down. Click "OK" when the countdown hits 55 seconds remaining. I know it sounds goofy, but believe me, it works. If we do not follow this routine, the shutdown or restart will fail and we have to force quit the machine.
Now, we've been doing this for a long time - probably about a year. Since we started having to follow this silliness, we have installed a second hard drive in the desktop machine and also now use a portable FW HD with my laptop. On the laptop, I always eject the external HD before shutdown or restart. On the desktop machine, we simply open at least one big folder (usually Applications on a clone backup partition, and on the other partition just some big folder), let it calculate the sizes of the enclosed items, then close those folders. Following these actions, we use the previously described procedure.
Try it and let me know here if it works for you.
I know it sounds totally insane, but it works. It's a pain to do it every time, but it beats a forced shutdown and the chance of data corruption. I've given up on a solution; we'll probably replace these machines before there's a fix - judging from the lack of success other have with this problem.

  • Managed clients sometimes freeze at logout showing only desktop picture

    Hello --
We're running Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 on an Xserve and Mac OS X 10.4.1 on forty PowerMac G5 workstations. All users have network home folders. All managed preferences are at the computer level.
The problem is that occasionally, during the logout process, a user's computer will freeze / hang displaying only the user's desktop picture.
While the computer is in this state, it's not accessible via Apple Remote Desktop. The only way to recover from the freeze is to force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button.
This is the final entry in the system log before the freeze that may be a clue to the problem:
    Jan 22 11:40:32 xarts-lab-006-05 kernel[0]: AFP_VFS afpfs_unmount: afpfs_flushfiles failed 16
I've done some searching online for other clues related to "afpfs_flushfiles" and haven't had much luck. Has anyone else out there experienced this issue? Does anyone know what the "afpfs_flushfiles" task is trying and failing to do?

I have this problem as well. We have several offices, but only one of our offices does it. I have been researching for a while now, but have found very little. We also experience delays and other random errors as well. Have you checked your forward and reverse DNS? Using the Terminal, type sudo changeip -checkhostname and verify that the current hostname and DNS hostname are matching. I installed DNS after I setup my auto-mounting sharepoints, and think maybe that has something to do with my problem. I will be implementing my fixes this weekend. I would recommend more research before using changeip to repair it if your hostnames do not match, as I'm unsure what other changes this may cause. I'm fairly sure I'm going to have to re-promote my Open Directory master, then re-select the user's homes out of WM, as well as rejoin all the client computers to the new OD master because the search base will be changing as well. I may find out that DNS had nothing to do with the problem as well. Good luck, hope this info helps.

  • KDE (kwin?) freeze at logout/login

    Hi all,
I have a problem using KDE (4.2.1, but problem present since 4.0 or something) with kwin's desktop effects. If I enable them and logout at the end of the day, login in again the next day I have a 100% chance of a freeze at the KDE loading screen. The mouse can still move, but the keyboard is un-responsive: ctrl+alt+backspace can't kill X and ctrl+alt+F? can't get me to a virtual terminal so I can kill X.
When this occur, the only option is keep the power button pressed until shutdown or to ssh to the machine and shutdown from there. When ssh, I can kill X, but trying to run it again will break similarly.
Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old does not reveals much... I don't have any error in it. The only warning I have are those:

  • Mavericks freezes on logout

    Hello,
I recently upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks on my iMac. Machine freezes when I log out. It takes a few minutes for the spinning wheel on the gray screen to go away and be replaced by the standard log-in screen. The problem can be "fixed" by a reboot. It goes away for a few login/logout cycles then reappears. I ran EtreCheck and cleaned up a bunch of Launch Daemons and Agents. But the problem is still there.
    Here is my EtreCheck listing:

    Thanks.

    Hi ttulge,
Thanks for the info. I do have a WD passport drive hooked up as a Time Machine.
I looked through my system for the various pieces of code mentioned in the infoworld article but found none of them. Also, I did not experience any data loss on my WD drive. Anyway, I turned off Time Machine and disconnected the WD drive. The freeze problem is still there. Same characteristics as before: No or little freezing after a restart but gradually, freeze would come back. Also I noticed in the last few days that after each session, there is a recovered file in the Recycle Bin. It's called  something like "merpAD 365" and has a size of 0 byte.

  • SL Time machine after disk change, SL and firefox freezes, no logout

I got a new hard disk, which was replaced at an original Apple service point. I restored my system from Time Machine using the SL DVD. Now the system freezes randomly, firefox, thunderbird, even iTunes freeze. The spinning ball appears. I am able to force them to quit, but the whole system does not work properly anymore. I cannot log out or shut it down. I have to press the power button.
I checked all disk permissions and the disk itself. I even tried to reinstall SL over the existing system, to keep all my programs, but this does not help. What should I do?

Thank you Eric for your fast answer.
this worked and now I have a running SL system. I guess I try to install maverics first and then use the emigration assistent to recover my data.
Still its a pitty that the time machine backup didn't do what it was supposed to. The workarround is very timeconsuming and leaves some concerns about my data and the future safety of time machine backups.
    Regards
    Thorsten

  • Freeze on logout Mac 10.6.8

I have a couple of users on my compute and all of a sudden when someone tries to logout the screen goes bloe and I get the spinning thing - I have left it for hours. I have done Techtool Pro and Drive Genius - Help. I have to hold power bitton to **** down and restart every time.

Hmm, interesting, I found out recently that my old G5 if put to sleep with Mail running will often crash or not wake, quitting Mail it seems to always wake!

  • Spaces causing system freeze and logout

Recently (probably within the last 2-3 weeks) I've been having some issues with switching between spaces. It doesn't happen every time, but occasionally when I switch to another space my entire computer will freeze in the middle of the animation. After a few seconds, my screen will go blue and I'll get logged out.
    Anybody else ever encounter this?

I have a similar problem with Spaces under OS X 10.6.4 on my MacBookPro5,3.
When I use Spaces from the keyboard to switch contexts to another window, the screen switching icon "sticks" to the display, and the keyboard only responds to the Spaces switching keystroke and some of the other "special" keys. However, the mouse continues to work, and I'm sometimes able to attempt a restart from the apple menu. But, the system still hangs about 50% of the time, forcing me to do a hard reset by holding down the power button.
I have had the blue screen experience once or twice, but I don't think it's related.
Other users where I work have reported nearly similar experiences with Spaces causing a system freeze.
I have, about 50% of the time, been able to use the mouse to disable other currently running utilities, one at a time, until the screen has become responsive. These utilities include:
    Quicksilver
    ClipMenu
    TypeIt4Me
    ShoveBox
It could be one of these is the culprit (my money's on ClipMenu and Quicksilver at the moment.)
I've also logged in via SSH from another machine and started whacking processes with some limited success. It seems there's some collision there with other running utilities, but I'm not sure what.
At this point, my only option is to disable Spaces and muddle through with a single desktop. Spaces crashes my system so consistently that it's not usable.
Sorry I don't have any other ideas to offer at this point.

  • Automatic logout after system freeze?

Lately I have been having trouble with my MBP 4,1 running 10.6.8.  The entire computer will freeze for several minutes, and then the system will automatically close all open programs, log out all users, and return to the login screen.  It's almost like the computer restarts itself without the actual restart.  (I hope that made sense.)
Does anyone know what's going on or how to fix it?  If it means anything, I'm running Sophos AV and multiple scans haven't turned up anything.
    Thanks!

If someone asked how to shut off a car engine whenever the computer detected someone was speeding, would you just assume they thought through every possible scenario?  Would you want to have that car when you're rushing a loved-one to
    a hospital?  When you're passing a truck?
Ever worked at a place where the IT department implemented utterly stupid policies that caused you problems in getting your work done?  Gee, IT people couldn't
possibly make mistakes like that, could they?  Grow up.
Bints and dopedope, of the three of us only one has actually made an attempt to help anyone in this thread.

Configure The Windows 8 "To Work" Options
Talk about growing up, seems to me you're using some old playground tactics yourself (of the 3 fo us???.. that's a bit immature).   And I could not agree more with Bint's remarks as it never fails when trying to get help in forums.  It's as
if the question is dodged to ponder on some ridiculous moral epiphany tangent.  Grant it you provided possible solutions but had to interject your beliefs at the same time.  Of course that is your right and no one has to read them, but at the sametime
you should be willing to accept a little constructive criticism yourself. I don't know why people that posted in a forum 100's, if not 1000's of times feel they are the pontificators of all that is right when it comes to these kind of remarks.
Noel, just offer some solutions minus the judgement calls.  I think rewording your concerns (judgements)  like "you may want to make sure..."   would be more acceptable than your personal experiences with IT.    And for
the record, in a business or institution, those computers do not belong to the individual using them at that time and should adhere to policies set forth to them.  Otherwise suffer the consequences.

  • Clients freeze on logout from OS X Server

I have a persistent problem with clients freezing or locking up upon log out from the server. This problem requires a forced restart. I can't see any errors on the server. I want to enable AFP debugging but the only instructions I have from afp548 are very vague. Can anyone shed some light on this:
If you set afpdebugsyslog to 1 (true), and add the following line to /etc/syslogd.conf,
I'm fine with the syslog.conf; but how does one set afpdebugsyslog to 1 (true) and am I on the right track?

Interesting, I have the same thing. One client on a system occaisonally get's "stuck" on log out. Or, they're stuck logging in. A restart of the machine fixes it, but is a pain. Nothing in the logs - my head is being scratched...

  • Logout in KDE freezes linux boxes

I thought this was down to my installation on mu other Arch box so i installed 0.6 on a new pc then ran pacman -Syu , to upgrade pacman first.
Then pacman -Syu again then rebooted.
Next i ran pacman -S xorg the rebooted then pacman -S kde
. Again i rebooted just to keep things in the system happy.
I add exec startkde to my .xinitrc then type after config my xorg.conf type startx.
KDE runs up fine and works well until i click on logout.
My screen goes black and all i see is the mouse cursor and my box is totally locked up.
No amount of ctrl alt del or ctrl alt backspace or terminal either.
    Just switch off and reboot.
Although i can get out of kde if i type ctrl alt backspace , then everything is fine.
Whats wrong with kde , the previous arch release worked fine.
Is it kde or xorg ?
This isn't good if it newbies come along and try Arch for the first time as a large percentage use KDE.
    HELP ...

He-he,  it's not Arch Linux specific ... I get the same on my Slackware box.  Patrick V. thinks it may be a bug in KDE and is hoping it will fix in KDE 3.3.1.
    Cheers.

  • Vista logout firefox freezes

    Vista Home
    Firefox 3.6.9
When I try to log out (or restart), Windows shows the big "Firefox is preventing you from logging out" message. If I click "cancel", Firefox is totally frozen, can't click any part of it, not even the "X" close window button. Task manager says "firefox not responding"

Try the procedures in the [[Firefox hangs]] article, in particular the section called "Hang on exit".

  • Gnome-volume-manager freezes xfce4 on logout

    Hi there,
I configured gnome-volume-manager to automatically mount drives (esp. usbsticks and so on) and it is working quite smoothly.
But one side effect is bothering me a little:
As suggested in a gnome-volume-manager HowTo, the volume manager is loaded on startx in the following form
    <.xinitrc>
    exec startxfce4 & exec gnome-volume-manager
    </.xinitrc>
as soon as I try to quit my Xfce session the session hangs and will not terminate properly, i.e. logfoff-screen appears but session is not ended.
I waited for quite a while (about an hour  )...
As I didn't change too much over the last few days, I quickly found out that the gnome-volume-manager is the culprit. As soon as the 'exec gnome-volume-manager' part is removed, Xfce will shut down normally.
Has anyone else encountered this side effect? Is there a solution?
    Greez and Thx

JGC wrote:I wouldn't start gnome-volume-manager that way, I would configure xfce4 to add gnome-volume-manager to the session when it starts up. Putting it in your .xinitrc makes xfce4 unaware of gnome-volume-manager.
    Sounds logical.
It was the way described in the HOwTo, though. That's why I started the volume-manager like this. I would have preferred a more general approach, starting the gnome-volume-manager someplace more general (and not separately for each user)
I guess the correct place would be somewhere in ~/.config/xfce4??
I would have thought maybe the xinitrc that resides there... (Maybe along with xftaskbar4...)
Or is there a more suitable file??
