10.4.11 on one drive works great, Leopard 10.5.8 on slave crashes my G4 Qui

I have an 867 Mhz G4 max. memory. 10.4.11 on one drive works like a dream.
When Leopard came out I installed it on a new slave drive.
Installation went perfect but now trying to start up onto the Leopard almost always crashes at start-up. I did all common fixes several times. Techtool pro and Discwarrior say no problem, Hardware test: fine. Archive and install made no difference. Help please.
                                                                                                 W.W.

I can't remember when it came about, I think it was about Tiger's release they recommended that.
Searching Apple for anything is not getting any easier, all I've found so far is this...

And to really confuse me now...
The drive that came with your Macintosh is designated the primary drive (sometimes called the "master drive" or "drive 0"). Your Macintosh doesn't work with Ultra ATA devices set for cable select mode.

  • New solid state hard drive works great but boots slow

I just bought the kit from MCE technologies to replace my optical drive with a SSD. Everything is working great now, but they said that it runs better if the Bootable SSD is in the optical bay instead of the original hard drive location (and my secondary drive is in the original HD location). It seems to boot kind of slow initially and I'm wondering if the computer is looking at the regular hard drive in the original HD bay to boot, and not finding that it's bootable, and then moving onto the secondary device, which is the SSD, to boot. Once it gets there it's quick as ****, but it seems to take a while to get to that second drive.
Is there a way to tell the boot up sequence to look at the SSD drive first to boot?
I'm running a 17" early 2011 MacBook pro unibody with 16GB of RAM and OS 10.8.2

Thanks for reaching out to us. I'm glad that you were able to get the phone replaced. There is not a way to block the Kit Kat up date from coming through. You can always reject the option to update. If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to us at anytime.

  • Anyone got one to work with Leopard yet?

Posted this Rant at the end of another Topic, slightly OT so reposting here (with some additions):
I wish I could report that iTunes 7.6 broke my apple tv, because that would mean it had been working up until very recently. Sadly however, it hasn't been used since i put leopard on my media server (mac mini).
I bough one of the first batch of 40Gb ones before there were 160Gb ones, and have had to remove and re-add it to iTunes (streaming) every time i used it until leopard. now it will sometimes put in a fleeting appearance when removing a disk or plugging in an iPod.
Once it was even there long enough to tell it to sync one film. Since leopard my work around has been to remove and add it again but with syncing not streaming then sync the one film or tv show that is required. unfortunately this has only worked once.
What have I Tried To fix this i hear you cry well...
    Under Tiger:
complete os rebuild, disabling firewall, rebuilding mac subnet from ground up playing sequentially with advanced router properties (yes i do know what i am doing, I'm a paid IT Technician) calling in a friend with networking and IT communications degree to help, calling in father with 20 years corporate network design experience.
End result? nothing changed in the way my network was setup, as nothing was wrong with the way i had it set up to begin with (that said the initial setup of the router justifies a whole f*ing essay). during this time all mac's at all times had current software. i took all software updates hoping for a fix. in the mean time using the workaround described above.
    Under Leopard:
Are you Joking? even less functionality. after reading up and discovering you CAN'T DISABLE the leopard firewall yet, devised new work around (as above) worked once, gave up. too much to deal with with wifi connections under leopard dropping out continuously.
Result: useless piece of kit with truly wonderful and sleek looking software interface.
I think a large part of the problem is my laughable router which seems to flake out requiring a cold restart multiple times a day. (airport extreme 'n' 1st generation).
Both are just under a year old. I'll wait for 10.5.2 + Apple TV update + update to airport extreme base station (hopefully when time caplsule comes out).
If this doesn't resolve all my issues I'll just return ATV + AEBS, call it a day with apple networking and get a netgear n router, and one of those network HDD's with video playing capability and a tv output and hook both things up by my tv. no video conversion to itunes required. wireless n access to my media. half the cost, job done.
Don't get me wrong, mac's are still amazing but these two devices have shattered my faith in apple products, unless it's a mac or an iPod, I'll steer clear in future.
I would go back to Tiger but it is too much hassle now. They'll fix the WIFI and the firewall in 10.5.2 at which point there'll be nothing to stop me using my machines with leopard. updates for pro software continue to be released and nearly all of my applications worked with a clean install anyway.
Back to the topic, has anyone else got an ATV with leopard that does nothing at all? i want to be able to say to them that the product they sold me is not fit for purpose and return it under that premise.
Also if anyone has a fix (non voodoo please) I'd gladly eat my hat and just start using the bloody thing, albeit 10 months after purchase.

You say you tried switching off the firewall i tried that too and your quite right it seems that it will not work with the firewall off. as turning it off does not turn it off.
sos10: "I did make sure however iTunes wasn't on the list in the Firewall settings."
The list your talking about (if you're talking about the leopard firewall) is the list of programs WITH access. so if you have it set to: "set access for specific services and applications"; iTunes would have to be in that list with "allow all incoming connections".
The only other setting is essential services only which doesn't work. As this doesn't include the port we need to get a connection.
out of the three the one that works the most is the: "set access for specific services and applications"
iTunes - "allow all incoming connections"
This i when i get the odd reminder vis the devices list that i have a useless £200 electrical device heating up my front room.
Maybe this wouldn't be such a problem if you could actually open a port in a firewall (shock horror). I know they'd have to hide the option away somewhere so as not to mess up the simplicity of the interface!

  • I have an original version of the IPad.  Can this be updated or is it no longer supported.  Do I need to buy an new IPad?  This one still works great!

Is the original IPad still able to be updated?

If your original iPad does everything you want it to do there is no need for you to purchase a new iPad. But if you find there are apps you want to use that are not available to you because the iOS on your iPad is too low then, yes, a new iPad would solve that problem.

  • X-FI worked great for one day, now system won't boot up - NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Er

I can get the system to come up in safe mode, but can't get it to come up normally. I installed the card on Saturday and it worked great with no issues (played about 4 hours of WoW with it). The machine booted up fine at least 3 times yesterday. This morning, it won't come up normally at all: BSoD:
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error - The System has Halted
I made a restore point prior to installing the X-FI drivers yesterday, so I am going to go ahead and go back to that point and hope the system comes up. If it does, then there is a serious problem with the X-FI drivers.
My system is a standard Intel chipset running a Pentium 4, 3.8 Ghz - single core, non-64 bit with 2 Gigs of Ram.
I will post back on here if I have any luck with the restore point.

Memory chips are pretty vulnerable these days. The first week I had my PC I tested my memory with memtest and all was fine. A week later, I began getting BSODs, but every time because of a different driver or module. So I retested it and it wasn't OK anymore. Send it back, got a new one. Worked for a month, then same problems! The 3rd time was the good one... The memory lasted, but my Power Supply broke! After replacing everything is fine for a year now... I don't know if there is any connection, but I think my PSU was eating my memory sticks.
But anyway, I hope your BSOD is just a "statistical" one.

  • Imac - dvi to hdmi.  It works great, but I have one problem with blue flicker on my imac

Yesterday I bought a dvi to hdmi connector from Apple store, and successfully connected my iMac (10.6.8) to an LG 50" monitor.
It works great with one problem.  My imac flickers blue every 2 secs when TV is on but set to other inputs.
We use the TV for other things (TiVo, DVD) as they are HDMI1, HDMI2 and the iMac is HDMI3.
I tried several things, and each worked with Audio and Video.   I currently have it setup as seperate screens instead of duplicating the screens, but each worked fine.  And each had the same problem below.
The problem comes if I am on the iMac and then turn on the TV to watch something.  As soon as I do, my iMac display starts flickering blue every 2-3 seconds as it is obviously talking to the LG TV.  As soon as I set the TV to HDMI3 everything works.  If I turn the TV off, everything works.
I don't want to have to connect the cable every time I want I want to project to the TV (although I guess I can live w/ that).  Is there a way to have this setup correctly?
thanks for any help in advance.

As an update, after 2 weeks of tinkering with this setup, the iMac is usually able to settle down after about 20 seconds of flittering.  And, if it does happen where the iMac stays blue screen, I can switch the TV to show the HDMI input from the computer, which works, and if I want, switch it back.
So, all in all, it works very well.  I just needed some more patience.

  • I had a power mac g4 into which i put 3, 320 gb PATA hard drives in a raid slice config so that it worked as one drive needless to sat that i lost the g4 to a surge but the drives are good. now i have an imac, how can i recover the info off those drives

i had a power mac g4 into which i put 3, 320 gb PATA hard drives in a raid slice config so that it worked as one drive needless to sat that i lost the g4 to a surge but the drives are good. now i have an imac, how can i recover the info off those drives. can i put the drives in external cases and plug them all in, will the imac see them as a raid slice then  help please

    Before you have another accident:
Buy a UPS of good quality and sufficient to your needs.
I would have to assume that the drives were connected to a PCI PATA card, hopefully. Otherwise, well RAID and having drives on the same bus (master and slave).
And no backup, none at all...
Get your hands on a G4.
Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft maybe.
If they were SATA and running on PCI SATA controller, very popular and common really in G4s, more options would be open.

  • Automatic backups are not working on one drive in Mt. Lion

I am having some trouble with automatic backups  from my 2009 MacBook Pro to one drive in Mountain Lion:
    * The drive in question is an external 500 GB USB or Firewire drive.
    * I encrypted the drive with FileVault 2
    * Manual backups work fine to this drive.
    * Automatic backups work fine from the MBP to my server at home (running Mt. Lion Server)
I have tried multiple iterations of deleting Time Machine preferences, and even of erasing the external drive, to no avail.  The only lead I have is that the MBP logs the following error when I back up to the external drive:
    9/4/12 12:01:33.899 PM com.apple.backupd[28054]: Failed to upgrade encrypted tmbootpicker.efi: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=-50 "Could not find any Apple_Boot corresponding to the encrypted volume..." UserInfo=0x7f81e28694a0 {NSLocalizedDescription=Could not find any Apple_Boot corresponding to the encrypted volume...}
For what it's worth, here is the partition map from my machine, including the drive in question (/dev/disk3):
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk0

       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:                  Apple_HFS WSE-Buffalo-3          *499.4 GB   disk3
The error makes sense based on the partition map, but I'm not sure how to recreating the missing Apple_Boot volume.  I suspect that missing volume is causing automatic backups to fail(???).  Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks.

Please find diskutil cs list output appended to this article.  Well, the plot thickens.  Now, automatic backups are being skipped on the server backup from the laptop.  Thiis started occurring after Time Machine did a lengthy verify (fsck?) of the backup.  Automatic backups are working fine from our other three computers.  The server backs up to the local disk, and the other two computers use the server.  I think the next thing to do is to look at Time Machine preferences...

  • I have a Seagate Slim Portable 500 GB USB 3.0 external hard drive that worked great with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina but gets ejected and won't show files on any iMac.

I have a Seagate Slim Portable 500 GB USB 3.0 external hard drive that worked great with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina but gets ejected and won't show files on any iMac. My Macbook Pro and the two different iMacs I tried it on were all using Mountain Lion, so the only difference was the iMac versus Macbook Pro.

I just tried this, no luck...
I connected a different USB cable, still the same problem. Tried both cables with the problematic hard drive on two different computers, still the same problem.
At this point I assume I'll probably need professional help in saving the files, thanks for the assistance.

I just got the ipod nano about 3 weeks ago. It worked great up untill today. It would not turn on, or connect into my computer. I took it back to best buy and they said it had a defulted battery, and that I needed to call the company. So I did and they had me send it in. Will they send me a new ipod, or a refurbished one. I havn't even had the ipod long enough, and I paid good money for it. I'm hoping to get a new one, because it wasn't my fault.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $199 for 64 GB one and $99 for the other 4Gs. They do not fix yours. The cracked screen voids any warranty you had on the iPod.

Have a LaCie external 2big RAID drive; two 1T drives in RAID 0 configuration (striped).  Drive works perfectly as one big 2T external disk but Mac Installer (Lion - App Store download & Snow Leopard DVD) refuse to install OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard on RAID drive.
Previous RAID - two 500g's in RAID 0 had SnowLeopard/Lion installed and worked just fine as bootable drive.
    Help!

Keep in mind a RAID 1 only protects you from hardware failure of one of the drives. It does not protect you if the hardware raid/chip set decides to take a vacation. Also, if FCP corrupts a file, it is written as corrupt to both drives.
I'm a big fan of separate but equal. Two drives. One goes to the site, the other remains at the hotel. At night, you back up the site disk to the the hotel disk. If something happens to the computer and the disk at the site the next day, you at least have the material back at the hotel.
eggs. baskets. that sort of thing.
    good luck.

  • Siri works great except to call one contact

    Hello,
I am using Siri in Spanish, it works great in all applications except when I try to call my wife. I set the relationship and it detects when I say "Call my wife", but as soon as it starts looking for the contact it just says back : "I am sorry something is wrong, Can you try again?". The same happens if I try to call by her name instead of "wife", siri finds the contact but can't dial saying there is an error. Siri can call any other contact just fine except my wife. I don't think it's a problem detecting my wife because I can send iMessages and emails to her using Siri, just not phone calls. Now, if I swith to the English version of Siri, everything works fine and can call by wife or her name.
I tried resetting, rebootig, turning off-on Siri but nothing works... Does anyone have this problem?
Not sure if Siri is doing me a favor, but sometimes I do need to call my wife hahaha
    Thanks!

HAHAHA  Ok, remove your wife as a contact from your phone.  Then re-add her, but dont establish the relationship that she's your wife.  If her name is Maria, stick with saying "call Maria"  It is a known Siri glitch with multiple languages.

  • Can Time Machine back on one external hard drive (work files) to another external hard drive (back up)?

Can Time Machine on a Mac Book Pro 10.5.8 back up an external hard drive (working files) to another external hard drive (WD dual backup)?

I have Mountain Lion here ready to upgrade, but I'm scared of what will happen - there's always something when you upgrade, but I guess that's for a different post!
Yes, it's a different post, but let's make a comment any way.
Your power pc apps will not work when you upgrade to Mountain Lion. You will have to replace all the apps you use.

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
