10.4.11 update and cursor jump

This problem occurs in Thunderbird, MS Word, Allgood Solitaire, Firefox, and so on.
I let Software Update download the 10.4.11 patch. I installed, rebooted etc. The cursor jumps when I use the trackpad, and also acts as double-click when I mouse-over a link, or hover over the deck in Solitaire. Action in Word was especially annoying -- cursor would select entire paragraphs or lines as I typed. I have to keep moving the cursor out of the window. The behavior for the window reminds me of focus feature in window under X-windows or Solaris, but here I can't tu
rn it off.so
Cursor behavior improved somewhat after running Disk Utility and fixing permissions.

I think 10.4.11 mistakenly sets Trackpad Gestures/Clicking as a default.
Here's the solution:
System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Trackpad
Under Trackpad Gestures, un-select Clicking.
Good luck!

  • Screen Moves and Cursor Jumps

    I have searched all day for answers and tried about everything, to little avail.
    I bought a new MacBook Pro the day when Lion was released and then upgraded to Lion a few days later, and updated with 10.7.1. This morning my screen started to jump from one desktop (space) to the oher, so I deleted all but my main space. Then it kept trying to switch screens again, but could not (sometimes it jumped from main screen to the Launchpad or Mission Control. My mouse also started to jump all over the screen.  I tried many recommendations I found online and the screen jumping has now slowed down. The mouse is still very erratic, and often jumps from one side to the other.
    1. I have turned off all the hotspots
    2. Ran "Verify disk-permissions" and "Verify disk". No problems - no need to repair.
    3. Tried different mouse connections USB and Bluetooth and cleaned the mice.
    4. Turned on and off ten times.
    5. A few other techniques which I don't recall now.
    What to do? This is driving me nuts so I am now using my PC with Windows. How sad!

    It's set to 'stand by' when closing the lid - but it stays powered on.

  • FF was running fine. My cursor jumped out of the text box while i was typing and now no text box on FF will let me type in it? Help!

    Basically as above, i opened a new tab to search for an article and as i was typing the cursor jumped out of the box without my realising. I placed the cursor back in the box and started but no characters appeared. I tried the URL bar and again nothing. I opened Chrome and it worked fine so clearly something ive managed to do but i have no idea what!
    I didn't use any shift, alt or ctrl buttons accidentally. I have tried shutting FF down and reopening but nothing.
    Can anyone help please?
    As an addition, why does the cursor jump out like that?
    Thanks

    Hello darrendons, try disabling graphics '''hardware acceleration'''. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
    You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
    *Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
    *In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
    *In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
    *Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
    Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]

  • Continuing problem with cursor jumping and more!

    I had made a post about cursor jumping and thought I had solved the problem but it's back again with a twist. The cursor still jumps eratically in just about any program and will then settle down for awhile. What is also happening is the flyout tools in adobe photoshop and illustrator don't work properly or at all. I have tried trashing the preferences for illustrator and photoshop, repaired permissions, repaired the disk with disk utility- it says everything is fine. Now...... when I sartup off of my backup hard drive, everything is fine- cursor and all. Are there any ideas as to how I can solve the problem with my internal hard disk? I was told that I may have to wipe the hard disk clean and start over again. Are there any areas you can send me to that will help me do that?

    I have this problem even before running this set up updates (not sure what version) so I have a hunch it may not be related to those updates (but not sure)..
    .it started whem mine was new a few months ago and I am using a T410s....however  I am also running win 7 64bit....
    I did re-ren the windows touchpad calibration and it seemed to get better (NOT CONCLUSIVE) as it is intermitant and just started again...it would happen often for spurts then stop (Few days happening often)...when I am in hotel rooms or places with steam it seemed to happen more (not sure if coincidence)...I did run the tablet input calibration in the control panel but not sure if it fixes it...I don't know if it is softare or hardware and it is very anoying and intermitant...exact same things....cursor jumps to right corner and tablet keyboard shows up in left corner even though no touch...and it closes some apps...as that is where the X is....if you find anything PLEASE let me know...thanks

  • Cursor jumping to end of clip in FCP log and transfer

    I'm using AVCHD footage from a Sony hxr-nx5u camera. I copied the clips to a hard drive and am now using log and transfer to get the clips into FCP. My problem is that on some of the longer clips (pieces over about 10 min) the cursor start to jump or snap to the end.
    Example, through the first part of the clip I can drag the viewing cursor back and forth along the clip's timeline. When I let go, it stays there. If I do the same thing in the second half or later of the clip, when I let go the cursor jumps to the end of the entire clip every time. I can't log or mark in and out points for the second half of the clip unless I just let it play though. (If I do let it play through, I still can't go back and adjust it)
    I'm using Final Cut 7 and think it's fully updated.
    Very frustrating to say the least. Can anyone provide any help on this?

    Hi -
    No first hand experience at this, but my understanding is there is currently a problem importing clips from that camera that are over 10-15 minutes.

  • Discretionary updates and opening a cursor from passed parameters

    I am trying to pass a list of item IDs into a procedure, and have the procedure loop through a cursor of those items, working out the length of columns and taking appropriate action when the length of the data threatens to exceed the length of the column.
    For example:
    drop table t;
    create table t (itemid number, itemdesc varchar2(10));
    insert into t values (1,'cat,rat');
    insert into t values (2,'dog');
    commit;If I attempt to append ',cow' to the end of item 1, that would error. But it would be OK for item 2. However, if I try to add ',vestibule' to either of the items, both should error.
    So I have this procedure:
    create or replace PROCEDURE item_change (p_item_list IN VARCHAR2,
                                      p_newword IN VARCHAR2)
    IS
      v_addlength      number;
      v_maxlength   number;
    BEGIN
      v_addlength := length(p_newword);
      execute immediate 'select max(length(itemdesc)) from t
                         where itemid in
                           (select * from table(sys.odcinumberlist('||p_item_list||')))' into v_maxlength ;
      if v_maxlength+v_addlength>10 then
        raise_application_error(-20001,'Too Long!');
      else
        execute immediate 'update t set itemdesc=itemdesc||'''||p_newword||''' where itemid in  (select * from table(sys.odcinumberlist('||p_item_list||')))';
        commit;
      end if;
    END;
    /As you can see, I workout what the maximum length of all items descriptions are for all possible items, and then providing adding the length of the new addition would NOT exceed the column length, I go ahead and append the new word to the description. It works fine, provided you stick to one case at a time:
    SQL> exec item_change('1',',cow');
    BEGIN item_change('1',',cow'); END;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-20001: Too Long!
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.ITEM_CHANGE", line 15
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    SQL> exec item_change('2',',cow');
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> select * from t;
        ITEMID ITEMDESC
          1 cat,rat
          2 dog,cowBut now the twist: if someone asks to modify both items, and the request is only valid for one of them, I nevertheless want to update the one that it's OK for, and skip the one that it isn't going to work. The way I thought to do this was, instead of the bit where I currently raise the application error, start looping through a cursor of itemIDs, evaluating each one's length in turn, and doing the update if the length computation is OK, and skipping it if not. In pseudo code (because this is what I can't get right!) I was thinking this:
    create or replace PROCEDURE item_change (p_item_list IN VARCHAR2,
                                      p_newword IN VARCHAR2)
    IS
      v_addlength      number;
      v_maxlength   number;
      v_wordlength     number;
      cursor c1 is select itemid, length(itemdesc) from t where itemid in (select * from table(sys.odcinumberlist(p_item_list)));
    BEGIN
      v_addlength := length(p_newword);
      execute immediate 'select max(length(itemdesc)) from t
                         where itemid in
                           (select * from table(sys.odcinumberlist('||p_item_list||')))' into v_maxlength ;
      if v_maxlength+v_addlength>10 then
        for x in c1 loop
          select length(itemdesc) into v_wordlength from t where itemid=x.itemid;
          if v_wordlength+v_addlength <= 10 then
            --do the update!
          end if;
        end loop
      else
        execute immediate 'update t set itemdesc=itemdesc||'''||p_newword||''' where itemid in  (select * from table(sys.odcinumberlist('||p_item_list||')))';
        commit;
      end if;
    END;
    /Of course, this doesn't actually work, because the syntax for declaring the cursor is all wrong, which is what I'm really asking about.
    In reality, I'm dealing with a table of millions of records, and a user might have selected hundreds of thousands of them to add words to. I can't afford to not update any of them just because one of them would breach its maximum possible description length. So I have to have a way to update those that can be updated and not attempt to update those where the update would cause things to go wrong. And I'm not allowed to just truncate the descriptions or the additions to fit: the things either have to be updated the way the user has specified, or not. (*Added later*: and I have to have a way of listing/reporting on which specific items are not updated if they are skipped because of length reasons).
    Can anyone suggest either new syntax for the above code so that it does what I conceptually want it to do? Or, alternatively, a different sort of approach entirely?
    Success would be to have table T in this example have its original data (1,'cat,rat' and 2,'dog'), and for me to issue the command:
    exec item_change('1,2',',cow');...and have it say, 'Procedure Successfully completed', with the result that a select from t would show item 1 as 'cat,rat' and item 2 as 'dog,cow'.
    Thank you in advance.

    Just to be sure I understand this. You will get a list of items, which identify individual records, possibly in the 100's of thousands. For each of these items, you need to add a single word to the description column, recording which ones could not be updated.
    Would an individual item in p_item_list ever result in multiple rows being updated, or is each item unique in the table?
    Will p_newword always be a single word, or could there be multiple words e.g. 'cat, hat'? If there could be multiple words, is it an all or nothing update, or could you add cat but not hat for one item, both for another and neither for a third? If the words were of different lengths and the second word would fit but the first not would you add the second but not the first?
    First, I would completely support Karthik's suggestion to use an array instead of a string list if you can get the caller to do that, if not, I would transform the list into an array in the procedure. The code that Karthic showed that generates the cursor loop could be used to generate the array. In fact, this potential solution more or less depends on that.
    In the simplest case, that is, that the update is to be treated as single word, that is all or nothing, then I would be tempted to try something along the lines of this.
    CREATE PROCEDURE item_change (p_item_list IN VARCHAR2,
                                          p_newword IN VARCHAR2)  IS
       item_list_tbl is TABLE OF VARCHAR2(50);
       l_item_list  item_list_tbl;
       l_num_errors NUMBER
       dml_errors EXCEPTION;
       PRAGMA EXCEPTION_INIT(dml_errors, -24381);
    BEGIN
       SELECT TRIM(SUBSTR(str,INSTR(str, ',', 1,level)+1, INSTR(str, ',', 1,level+1)-INSTR(str, ',', 1,level)-1)) item
       BULK COLLECT INTO l_item_list
       FROM (SELECT ','||p_item_list||',' str FROM DUAL)
             CONNECT BY level <= LENGTH(str)-LENGTH(REPLACE(str,','))-1;
       FORALL i IN l_item_list.First .. l_item_list.Last SAVE EXCEPTIONS
          UPDATE t
          SET itemdesc = itemdesc||p_newword;
    EXCEPTION
       WHEN dml_errors THEN
          l_num_errors := SQL%BULK_EXCEPTIONS.COUNT;
          FOR i IN 1 .. l_num_errors LOOP
             DEBMS_OUTPUT.Put_Line('Errors occurred for '||l_item_list(SQL%BULK_EXCEPTIONS(i).ERROR_INDEX));
          END LOOP;
    END;Note that if your item list could really be 100's of thousands of items, or at least affect that many rows in the update, then you probably want to think about doing the FORALL UPDATE/BULK_EXCEPTIONS processing in a loop updating a "reasonable" number of items at a time.
    Depending on what you need in terms of error reporting. I would use possible use a log table (perhaps a GTT) then query off that to report back to the user, or perhaps a collection to return to the user. Note that the collection approach could require significant memory, so if you are really expecting to update 100's of thousands of rows I would definitely go for a table of some kind.
    You can see more about bulk collect [in the documentation|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14261/tuning.htm#sthref2176]

  • My cursor jumps around while typing and scrolling. i've tried different mice, different usb ports

    I have a new HP pavillon HPE windows 7. My cursor jumps around while typing and scrolling. I've tried different mice and usb ports.I contacted HP support and was instructed to do several things to the mouse and pointer, nothing helps. I installed in usb port in the rear of the computer that helped for a short time, then it went back to jumping around. So what else can I try. Thanks

    I have to admit I am baffled. I understand and have seen the issue happen on laptops before, but for the issue to be happening on a desktop strange. I can even understand a wireless mouse, however yours is wired.
    Microsoft has a tool called Mr Fix it. It scans the problem area and attempts to fix whatever is wrong. It's worth the shot in this case to see if it helps resolve the mouse issue.

  • On my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse, on my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse

    Having trouble with my MacBook Pro and the cursor jumping around and doing it's own thing.  Clicking opening up other folders etc.

    There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    5. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced.
    6. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    7. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    8. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • When I point and click, the cursor jumps into the wrong place. Help!

    Dear Apple Community,
    When I slide my cursor onto a selected item, it jumps away from that letter/number or selection when I click it.
    It is OK if I remove my hand, but I like to rest my palm on the keyboard to avoid repetitive strain injury.
    This never happened with my white Macbook. Is it something to do with metal magnetism?
    Can you tell me how to fix it?

    Hi,
    Did you solve your problem? When I point my cursor to select some thing like text or a button on a web page the cursor jumps a bit so it's hard to zero in on the correct selection,  it's so frustrating!

  • I did your Firefox 5.0 security update and got a virus that caaused my computer to go haywire and kept jumping from page to page as if someone had remote access to my computer.

    I recently updated Firefox on my desktop to 4.0. About a week ago I got the pop up for the 5.0 security update. I went ahead and updated and within an hour my computer started switching screens and going back several pages. I closed the internet and ran my virus scan but nothing was found. I then opened my windows task and tried to look to see what other new updates or programs were installed but again the computer would not let me open the window and kept changing the screen and going back several pages. I ended up having to do a system restore to factory settings and it was still happening. I had to go in and disable the remote access option in order for my computer to function properly.

    I will be typing within a page and the cursor will jump to the address bar, sometimes after typing just 1 letter. I will go back to where I am typing and it jumps again, repeatedly! This happened before and I don't remember how we resolved the issue.
