10.4.11 Update bricks 2 iBooks

i was updating two G4 iBooks. once i restarted, i got a text box saying i could not log into user (user is the name of the main user). i tried logging in to other accounts, and got the same text. These are school computers, on a school network. can someone please help. thanks.

Back up anything that's important on the hard drives and then re-install os x clean install. I've had problems like this and a clean install fixed it. Hope it helps.

After seven ios updates, why is iBooks still the only app that won't synch between iphone & ipad?!?

    Hi there,
Thanks for the reply.  I did think that could be the case but then other books would also show up as apps on phone but not counted as an app.  Maybe book apps downloaded from the app store work in this way whereas books bought from the ibooks app show in ibooks and not as apps.
I guess that would make sense, it must be because they are books but downloaded from the app store rather than the book store so they are visible as an app but don't actually get counted as an app.
Would you think that's the case too?
    Thanks

  • Updating original Blueberry iBook to OS X?

I'd like to update my Blueberry iBook from OS 9 to OS X. Which version can I update to (10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4)? The later versions of the OS only come in disc DVD, which this iBook can't play, only CD-drive. Any ideas? What about any other things I need to update my Mac to OS X?

    Hello Juan
I've taken a stock, original Tangerine iBook up to OS X (10.3.9). Here is my advice, based on that experience:
    1. Check to see that you have the latest firmware. Here is a link for that info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
The latest version of firmware for the original iBooks is 4.1.7
    2. Add some RAM. I have a 256MB module in mine, and it works fine. If you have 160MB, you may be able to install OS X, but it will be dirt-slow. (I've had OS X load in as little as 64MB, but it was so slow it was unusable.) 256MB is fine for daily use (e-mail, web surfing, etc).
    3. Depending on what you will do with your OS X powered iBook, a hard drive upgrade is highly recommended. I have run OS X (10.3.9) on the original hard drive, but I had to install nothing but the bare system (no foreign languages, no printers, no extra software). That kind of install is basically limited to checking e-mail and some web browsing. I later swapped out the original 3GB drive for a 20GB unit. Beware: swapping out the hard drive in one of these iBooks is a fairly lengthy process. There are about a zillion little screws and things to keep track of. If you are comfortable with a screwdriver and being around electronics, go for it - if not, a shop would be happy to do it for you. For a look at the tear-down instructions follow this link:
    http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/49.0.0.html
And decide for yourself if you want to tackle the job.
    4. You need OS X install CDs. The latest version of OS X that will run on your iBook (once you get the hardware up to spec) is Panther (10.3). I would not suggest any version earlier than Jaguar (10.2), which will also run quite well on your machine. You can get the CDs on eBay (as has been suggested) or from online retailers such as
    http://www.hardcoremac.com/
Note: make sure you get retail CDs - NOT CDs that cam with a particular computer - retail CDs can be installed on any machine, while others are machine-specific
That's about all I can think of for now. Good luck!

  • Updates iOS on iPad via iTunes.  Update bricked iPad, help please?

Running latest version of iTunes.  Got a notice to update OS on my iPad 2.  So I followed the instructions.  Halfway through the update bricks my iPad.
No computer recognizes the iPad.  iPad screen displays the "plug me into iTunes".  iPad won't turn off or restart.
Tried several different computers with iTunes....none recognize iPad being plugged in.
iPad 2, 16 GB model.  Was running the previous version of iOS until today.
    Any help welcome.
EDIT: Tried posting in iPad/iTunes help. Apple: You are not allowed to create or update this content, so posting here, apologies if wrong area.

TThere are a lot of posts like yours here. look through old posts from the last week or so. You can tap on View More towards the bottom of the main page. I don't recall a cure that works. Doesn't look promising but good luck.

  • Do Ratings and Reviews reset when you update your published iBook in the store?

I'm about to publish my first iBook in the iBooks Bookstore/iTunes. Am having a problem finding the answer to this question:
Do ratings and reviews reset when you update your published iBook in the store?

Reviews after an update are "sectioned" separately.... they do not reset to zero

  • Live Update brick my GE60

    Guys,
I just sent in my MSI for RMA as using Live Update bricked my BIOS.
They then claim that it's a customer fault to do BIOS update and say I'll need to pay the bill myself.
Out of expectation the cost to replace the mainboard was MYR 2,600!!
Man seriously? I can just top up another 1.4k to buy a brand new GE60!! And it's not totally my fault at all I just follow to click next next next.
I'm going to complain against their HQ tomorrow and see how it come..
What do you guys think? Am I deserve to claim for my warranty? C'mon...

Frankly speaking, you need to take part of responsibility for the failure after all on MSI website, they give the information clearly that this AP only supports MB and Graphics card and cannot be used on laptop.

  • BIOS Update Bricked Pavilion G6-2040NR

A BIOS update bricked my wife's laptop.
At least, that's the surmise, (cap lock flash and all, I have 30yrs around computers, not a noob) given it hasn't worked since mid-June, and there was an update for it June 17 2014.
I've gone through every step on another support page on this same site, http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-Questions/How-to-use-the-HP-BIOS-update-uefi-utility/... , but the phoenix tool suggested in step 7 to download doesn't do the job it is supposed to on update file sp66880 to enable me to complete getting a USB stick together capable of recovering the system.
I cannot for the life of me find an update of this same tool to work in the same manner (beitas solution was posted March 4, 2013; update was 15 months later, it's 22 total months later,  I figure there must be an update).
I'm through step 6 and just stumped.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

We did try all of that in diagnosing that it's restore BIOS via USB or nothing.  The page I referred to in my original post seems to be my only option at this point.
The issue at hand, is: (c/p from http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-Questions/How-to-use-the-HP-BIOS-update-uefi-utility/... ), posted by http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/1385209 (if I could somehow tag him)
]]6. Download and run the HP Notebook System BIOS Update from the HP support drivers page.
]]- Now this file will be named sp****.exe. DO NOT RUN THIS FILE ON OTHER PCS... Extract this exe (with winrar, 7zip etc)
]]- There you will find the biggest file(by size) in the folder, it can be *.bin, *.ph or whatever. Just find it, DONT DO ]]ANYTHING YET.
]]7. Now download the phoenix mod tool from here:
    ]]http://www.sendspace.com/file/xxd63k (or google it...)
]]- Extract it and open the PhoenixTool.exe, open the *.bin file you found in original BIOS.
]]- Let it do it's word and keep clicking ok..
Step 7 is where I am stuck.  The Phoenix Tool available there errors out on trying to open the BIN files.  I've searched for a more recent Phoenix Tool since his post, considering his solution preceeded the most recent BIOS update, but to no avail.

  • 10.4.6 update just bricked my iBook. =)

Needless to say, I am so ****** right now, I can't see stright.
    Thanks alot, apple.
Anyone know how to fix it?

Did you power the book off while in the middle of a boot? 10.4.6 includes firmware updates...you may have hozed your hardware.
Maybe you can reset your pram?
I know you've read this before...but questions that say "it didn't work...whats wrong" usually don't get much help. You've got to at least try to sumarize what the problem is.
If you're just being a troll, then go away.

  • 10.9.2 update bricked my MacBookPro

All was well running OS 10.9.1 on my 2007 MacBookPro with Core2Duo processor.
Then came the OS 10.9.2 update. First it caused the crash report function to peg the CPU, running more threads until it topped out at 8.
Repaired the disk permissions twice. Rebooted gracefully several times. But the new problem persisted.
Finally on the seventh reboot, the system reached the login screen. I could not finish typing a password before a hard hang left the system entirely unresponsive. After a few minutes, I forced a reboot with the power button.
Now the system is bricked, all thanks to a poison update.
The question is how do I get past this poisonous update, which seems to have impacted the firmware as well, because now the system will not boot from known good alternate boot media.

Thank you Bob. I should have tried harder to get the MacBookPro to respond to boot-time keypresses. It took several tries to force firmware to boot from an alternate OS image on external drive, but when that finally worked, I realized that the OS 10.9.2 upgrade damage was limited to the OS boot and recovery partitions on the internal SSD
I'll conceed that OS X is not my first & best platform, and I force OS X to coexist in a corporate ecosystem dominated by Linux and Windows.
Likely third-party drivers clobbered by OS 10.9.2 which ran fine up through 10.9.1 include:
    1. remote video projector link provided by AirParrot since Apple does not support AirPlay in the OS on my older 2007 MacBook Pro despite having dedicated GPU that's capable.
    2. third-party NTFS to get complete functionality
    3. third-party WiFi drivers for spectrum analysis
    4. third-party tool to force OS X to support TRIM on non-Apple SSD.
The freshly installed image of OS 10.9.2 thats working now on the internal SSD will be replicated to external drive prior to installing any of those four items.

  • The app store showed me that I had 3 apps to update, Drudge Report, iBooks

The app store app, showed that I had 3 apps to update, one of them being iBooks.  Anyway I keep getting a message that they cannot be updated at this time however I have been able to update other apps. I can't find any troubleshooting advise.  I have the iPad (1) any ideas out there?

Try signing out of your ID, restart the iPad and then sign in again. Settings >Store >Apple ID - tap the ID and sign out. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Sign in again. Settings>Store >Sign in. See if that works.

  • 10.4.6 update kills G4 iBooks :S

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue ]
I installed 10.4.6 on my G4 1.33MHz iBook and was subsequently unable to boot. I managed to install a new system using my Tiger install disk but I had to delete a bunch of stuff using target dusk mode to make room first. Thank goodness I had another mac to hand.
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether my disk being pretty full before doing the install could be connected: in the past I've been told I can't install software that Software update finds cos I've only had 300MB for example.
ie, is it worth trying again now there's more room I wonder, or am I better just waiting for some future less glitchy release?

I don't know where Apple says keeping that amount of free space. But having managed many a Mac OS X system in the past, I've noticed significant increase in file swapping when the hard disk becomes more than 85% full, slowing down the machine. In addition, the probability that any program which needs large contiguous sections of space (i.e. a software update that is 140 MB I would consider one of those), will have that much less chance of seeing it when the hard drive is near capacity, says, that installing an upgrade with too little free space is not advisable, based on logic. Not necessarily on official recommendations. Finder file copying significantly slows down when one tries to copy files on an overfull hard drive, as well as Spotlight searching.
Finally, until 10.3.9, the entire free space needed to create a DVD or CD was mirrored in the Finder when you created one. While that has improved with 10.4, as only aliases are necessary, it still is not a RAM based burning operation like some third party burners.
There are all these reasons why you shouldn't let your hard drive get too full. The breaking point may vary depending on the health of your hard drive, and the kinds of files you access frequently. Larger files are more sensitive to lack of free space as the built-in defragmentation of the operating system is limited to some amount under 100 MB (I don't know what it is, but it is something you may be able to look up). Yes, I wish the Finder was more proactive about telling you how much free space is not enough with something more than more frequent spinning beachballs which you have to diagnose. But suffice it to say, 10.4.6 is quite a stable update, and it is just contributing factors which may break it, like insufficient disk space. I suggest people who are having trouble with 10.4.6, read my FAQ on upgrading:

  • How can I update my crashed iBook G4 to current or near-current software?

My iBook G4 crashed last year, and I lost everything on it. Everything else updated except for iTunes. When trying to update iTunes, I'm only stuck at iTunes 4. Is there a way to try to update it to iTunes 7 [where I was before it crashed] or possible to iTunes 9? I know you need the latest model of iBooks to get the latest software, but I am just plain ol' desperate.

thank you very much for your help! this at least gets me back to where i was before i crashed thanks again

  • Can't update iTunes on iBook G4 (OS10.4.11)

Hallo.  My Mum just gave me her old iPhone 4s.  It doesn't have a 'software update' section under settings/general. I wanted to try to update it somehow using iTunes, but I need to update my IBook G4's iTunes first.  But when I try my laptop just says it can't connect with the server.  However, there's no problem with my internet connection.  What is going on and what should I do?

Without quoting you exact version numbers of everything I can tell you right now it won't be possible.  In order to update the iPhone you will have to be running a version of iTunes that is at least as young as the iPhone and by the time the 4S was out they were well into a version that could not be run under Tiger OS 10.4, even the latest that you will get with Software Update.
I am not sure which versions match up but it may be possible if your iPhone is sufficiently old, and you wanted to go to the expense and trouble of updating your computer to run Leopard OS that you may be able to bridge the gap.  Finding Leopard OS won't be easy but at least the prices have dropped now that it is so old nobody wants it anymore.  It used to run $200 but I think I have seen copies for $50.  Whether or not you can even run it will depend upon the exact specifications of your G4.
All the above said, you might see if you have a friend with a newer computer who could help you upgrade.

  • Possible to update from old iBooks Author file using new version?

Will the just-released new version of iBooks Author allow me to update an existing book which was created with a previous version of the software?
I created a book in landscape mode, but placed all of the images in portrait orientation. Now that there are portrait-only templates, I want to redo the book. Will I be able to replace my book on iBooks without having to relist it?
The new iBooks Author description states the following: "And to keep your work current, add updates by publishing new versions of your original title. iBooks will automatically notify your readers that there’s a new version of your book ready to download."

    nanobear:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you still have the original library on our old Mac? If so, connect the two Macs together so you can manually copy the iPhoto Library folder from the old Mac into the Pictures folder of the new iMac. download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name in the owner section and Staff in the group section. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
Now launch iPhoto and it should inform you that the library will need to be upgraded. Select OK and the library will be converted to the latest version.
What version of iPhoto were you running on the old Mac?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • 6.1.2 update bricked my iPad Mini - White Screen of Death

I updated to 6.1.2 over wireless.  Shortly after, I noticed the battery was draining extremely fast.  I followed a suggestion I found here to let the battery drain to 0 and to reset my settings under Settings>General.  When the battery was about 50%, I shut it down completely as I wasn't using it and so that it would charge faster (not using battery on standby, etc).
I let it charge for about 4 or 5 hours.  When I turned it back on, I got a bright, solid white screen and then it shut off... or so I thought.  The device remains warm, as though it was in regular use, but the display is OFF - NOT blank, OFF.
It will not go into Restore or DFU mode, it will not turn back on, it will not do anything.
Waiting on an Apple call in the morning, but once it is replaced, I doubt I will purchase another Apple product, considering the sickening irony that my iPad was functioning fine prior to the update and the VERY UPDATE MEANT TO IMPROVE BATTERY LIFE ACTUALLY KILLED MINE to begin with.
I have very weak faith in Apple at the moment.

Guys, my ipad mini just had the exact same issue yesterday.
It was recently updated (about 1 week ago) to 6.1.2  and since yesterday it just turned into a brick (black screen, no reaction whatsoever,...) .
I tried different chargers & different USB-ligthning cables without any result. Somehow it seems the battery does not have any juice anymore and won't charge either.
My bad luck was that 4 months ago my daughter had the ipad mini dropped on the floor and the screenglass has a small crack. It did not affect any functionality and still worked fine untill yesterday. I went to an official apple store and they told me that the warranty doesn't count on the complete ipad since the screen is cracked/damaged.
Explaining that the crack had nothing to do with the current issue we have did not help.
Now I'm standing here with a 6-month old product which has no warranty and is as death as a brick.
    Thanks to Apple!
