10.4.11 wireless networking issues for Intel iMac

After being prompted by software update to upgrade to 10.4.11 from 10.4.10, I did so, but found my computer stuck at the grey screen upon restart. I have since done the archive + reinstall of 10.4.4, which allowed me to onnect to my wireless network again (other Intel and PPC Macs are able to access the same network). I then downloaded and installed the 10.4.11 combo package as some have suggested on other posts throughout this forum; however the problem has returned.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and/or does anyone have a solution other than reinstalling 10.4.4 and upgrading to 10.4.10 again?
Cheers!

Mizraith,
I have the same setup as you (the WRT300N router & a macbook pro (sept 2007). I have been investigating these issues for a while now. First, to be quiet honest, this router is a crappy piece of hardware. Simply google the product name along with interesting keywords such as 'vanish' 'problem' 'issue', and make your own conclusion. Not to mention that the product has had at least 3 hardware revisions: it pretty much says it all.
Here are my takes on this, I have had 2 different problems:
1) First problem, the ESSID sometimes vanishs for a while. It is not macbook specific since I have observed that on my playstation 3 too. The only solution I have found to deal with this problem is to get to the wireless configuration of the router and change the radio band/wide channel, etc to something else. Then it'll work for some time before the problem reappears. I have contacted linksys tech support, and I strongly suspect that the support for N-mode is extremely incomplete, but of course they are not affirmative on this, otherwise they'd do a recall.
2) Second problem, the signals gets weak and the connection just freezes. Not sure it is macos specific, but the fact is that with macos 10.4.10, when it happened, simply setting aiport off -> on used to be OK. Since I upgraded to macos 10.4.11, the system will then appear to be connected to the AP with a good signal, but the NIC will be assigned a self-assigned ip address (169.x). This also happend after putting the system in sleep. It seams to happen more often on battery mode on my macbook. Manually rerunning the dhcp client does not help. Solution? You guess it, the r.e.b.o.o.t.
The router may be an unstable product, but there are some obvious regressions in the wifi support of macos 10.4.11, at least, in error handling. Here again, a simple google search for '10.4.11 wifi' with 'problem' 'issue' should convince you.
I have contacted the tech support of Apple regarding that issue. I didn't even expected to have a magical solution, but at least, some hints or even a mere acknowledgment. They never replied to my mail.
Let me know if you have some news on that issue, and good luck!

Unplug the USB cable from the printer.  Plug your printer into your wireless router with an Ethernet cable.
Next, on each computer, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.  Install it and select "Network" installation when it asks.

Hi-How do I change the wireless network name for Arris CM820? The support page lists many other kinds of modems but not this one. Thanks. Hardware: Mac OSX 10.9.95

The AirPort Express is exactly what you need, but when you attach it to a cable modem, you need to power cycle the modem to pickup the MAC address of the new device.
I suggest you do a full reset of the AirPort by pressing the reset button on it for over 30 seconds, power down the modem, connect the modem to the AirPort, then power up everything, then use the AirPort utility to configure the AirPort and your wi-fi settings from scratch.  If everything's good, then the LED on the AirPort will be green and you will have connectivity.
One warning, if you have 105 service from Comcast, the Express will limit your speeds to 90 or so as it has a 10/100 WAN / LAN ports.  For 105 speeds and higher you would need a AirPort Extreme.

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my wireless network connections, too. I did a fresh arch install with gnome3 some days ago to avoid any issues when upgrading, but i just can't access any wireless networks now. Everything else works like a charm, though. I followed the usual steps to set up my network/wifi with all the required modules and packages (broadcom-wl from the AUR, etc.) but it doesn't work like it did with gnome2 and xfce4.
My iwconfig/ifconfig output looks like dave1022's. Don't know if this is of any help...
The nm-applet in the gnome3 "panel" actually lists nearby wireless networks, but once I click on one of them, gnome asks me for authentification with my root password (user password does not work). I don't think it should be this way. If I enter my root password here, nothing happens whenever I click on the concerned network to connect to it. I deleted the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<SSID> file to reset the authentification process.
I tried to consult the gnome3 pages in the wiki, but couldn't find any valueable hints either...does anyone have any idea what I might have done wrong or forgotten?
It's exactly the same for me and it's driving me nuts. I'm using iwl3945
    [EDIT]
Well... actually installing the applet solved it for me. Is the applet actually needed for Gnome 3 or is a workaround?

  • Major Wireless Networking Issues

I recently moved into a new apartment and we are having wireless networking difficulties. It is a large apartment and we initially only had a Buffalo WHR-G125 (flashed with DD-WRT firmware and running with transmit power boosted) for the whole apartment (1700 sq ft - 3 bedrooms - many walls). Most of the apartment received decent signal but my room in the corner was extremely weak. My new HP (don't hate me its for school) got a poor signal and my Apple MacBook Pro basically got nothing.
I purchased an Airport Express N to act as a range expander but we had some issues with the WDS. Eventually we set up a subnetwork but it stil didn't really solve the issue. I am pretty much at wits end with the situation and I am considering purchasing an Apple Airport (but I am a poor student). Please let me know if you think that will solve the problem or if you have any other suggestions.
I also considered hiring an electrician to run an ethernet port to my room but that is also an expensive option. Please bear in mind that the router can only be in the living room or the farthest room from mine (so moving it into my room isn't an option). Thanks for your help.

    2 options:
Connect another Airport to the router using an ethernet cable. Place the existing Airport halfway between the router and your computer. You should be able to create a new wireless network, but share the router's internet connection.
Run an ethernet cable from the router halfway to your room, and fit the Airport there. You don't really need an electrician to do this, buy a long cable with the plugs fitted - any decent computer shop can make a cable for you - then just drill holes through any walls that get in the way.
Connecting an Airport base station wirelessly to a non-Apple wireless router can be a real problem, that's why I suggest using a cable.

  • IMac can see everything on wireless network except for internet

My iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 24" iMac running 10.5.8 has been perfectly fine for a couple of years. Suddenly it will not get an internet connection on the wireless network in our home. We have several other devices on the network that have no trouble using the internet. The iMac can access these devices via wireless, just not the internet.
When it's attached via a LAN cable plugged into the Airport (Dome type) the internet is fine.
    We're flumoxed.
    Any suggestions greatfully received.

    HI,
Try the information in the Airport Troubleshooting Guide and see if you can resolve the problem that way.
If nothing there helps click here for the Airport Extreme Base Station Setup Guide.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/AirPort_Extreme_Base_Station_Setup_Guidev4.2.pdf
Type Command + F on your keyboard. Then type in: Reset top right side of your Safari window just under your Bookmarks Bar then press return on your Keyboard.
Follow the instructions to reset your Airport base station.

  • Wireless networking issues

I'm fairly new to the Mac world. I have our iMac set up for wireless networking but am having some problems. It will find our network and connect, but it seems to be inconsistent. It will be connected and then all of a sudden lose connection temporarily.
Strange part is, when I click on our network name it will work again. It's like it drops our network to look for others (our network's signal is strong, by the way).
Is there a way to make it only connect to one specific wireless network and not search for others? Thanks...

This may sound like a silly question, but do you have a cordless phone or phone base next to your Mac? I had a 2.4Ghz cordless phone base on my desk that would cause my internet to do weird things. After completely unplugging it one day to troubleshoot the problem, my issues were gone. I ended up buying a different frequency phone and problem was solved.
Also, try checking out this article if you haven't done so already.

  • Iphone/IOS 6 and Enterprise Wireless Networks Issue

    Hi there,
Our company runs Cisco wireless using WPA2 Enterprise and AD Authentication. Now we currently have multiple vendor phones/laptops working fine including Apple Macbook Pro's, Apple Iphone 4s, Samsung Galaxy S2/S3 working on the wireless without issue.

  • HP Pavilion G6 wireless networking issue

i have a pavilion g6 and i cannot connect to my home wireless network, the wireless connection light on the keypad does not change color, it just stays orange. There is no issue with my home network, I have other devices on it.

Mine is having the same issue my screenshot button on steam was f12 I had used this before and the light would turn orange note I could easily turn the light back on by pressing fn f12 in that order, last night I was playing a game and wanted to take a screen shot like I had done the day before I pressed the button and the light went orange when I tried to press it again and turn it back it wouldn't change color and kicked me off the internet or wifi. I then proceeded to turn off the pavilion and start it up the next day, the fallowing day I turned on the pavilion and went to wifi and saw it said " wifi (off)" I then surched for help here and saw the person below said to turn off or uncheck something that did not work and I cant turn the light back to blue and turn on my wifi. note: recently I did wipe my computer to get rid of a strange thing on all my date and computer id name it said virus active and I thought reseting my pc back to default would fix it, it had not if you can help me with both of these problems it would be great

  • Necessary to have the same wireless network name for using WDS?

I have set up two Airports in WDS mode. I did this so my ps3 could get on the internet via ethernet (its an older model, and doesn't have wireless, so you have to use an ethernet bridge). I set up the WDS fine, and my Airport extreme base station (the square one) is the WDS main, while as my old Airport extreme (snow) is the remote, which I use to run a cable from to my ps3 to access the internet. This works fine when I have the network names for each base station the same.
I was under the impression that you could have two different named wireless networks for two base stations (i.e .they have different names), as long as you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the WDS settings (i.e. main and remote). However, when I do that, I can no longer access the ethernet from the remote base station on my PS3. I can only access the ethernet via my PS3 if I have the wireless network for each base station literally named the same. Seems kind of strange if you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the main and remote, as shouldn't they be talking to each other via that mode, and not the actual wireless network name?
I would like to have each base station with its own wirelss network name, so I can differentiate between them. I get some strange issues when my airport card scans, it frequently switches between base stations, and this slows down certain programs (i.e. VPN connections for mail etc).
I set this up pretty literally from the airport guide from the apple site.

I was under the impression that you could have two different named wireless networks for two base stations (i.e .they have different names), as long as you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the WDS settings (i.e. main and remote).
No that is not correct. Since the 2 are working together to create a single wireless network, they must use the same network name.

  • Airport and Wireless network issues

I have read all the issues about airport and wireless network. I don't see the issues that I have. My issue is that my wireless network used to automatically connect as soon as I power up my powerbook; then one day I power up and I was connected to default and I did not see my wireless address listed. I when into airport setup to try and setup again and it would not let me saying my password was not right. I logged off and then on again this time my network address was listed, but it still would not connect automatically to the network, now everytime I go to the web I must pick my own network and put in a passwork that sometimes works and sometimes not.
I have not done any updates or put any new software on the powerbook, so this is not the reason for my problem.
    Please Help!!!

Had this issue with our imac after upgrading to 10.4
The answer was to go into Network and select airport tab.
Listed there (for me) were three settings. Delete all of them ,they will probably include the actual network you want! Click to apply. Re-start the Mac.
Go back to network and airport and you should now see only the network you wish to join. It will ask for passwords again!!
Click apply and restart. It worked for me.

  • Wireless Network issue while using Apple Hardware Test remotely

I want to use Apple Hardware Test remotely through the disc on my MacBook Pro to check on a MacBook Air (old model). The problem is that when I start up the Air with the option key checked it does not recognise my wireless network and if I input it manually in the drop down list it will not connect. Other networks from neighbours are strangely enough visible. When I startup through the HD it instantly finds my Apple Airport network. What could be the issue?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Hmm.... I'm not sure I get what you mean or not but hardware test is a "in house" application for MBA and you don't need the installation disk to run the application. Unlike MBPro, you need the disk to run hardware test.

  • Wireless loss issues for over a year now.

    Hello there all.
So I kinda give up with BT in terms of support any longer, their answer to our issue is to continue to send out a replacement hub 3 and all that does is nothing.
The issue is this, our wireless will just randomly explode and start going haywire, it'll go off and on off and on overloading all wireless connections to it. For example, when this happens I can sit and watch on any wireless device in the household, all the avaliable wireless connections going away and coming back. Just open your wireless list, that shows all wireless locations you can connect to, and then imagine all of them going off and on like a flickering light.
We've watched this happen on every single device we own, we've even changed the wireless cards in the computers and still to no avail, as I said above BT's 'solution' to this problem is to just keep sending out 'brand new' (Yeah, right, they are all just refurbished gen 1's and I've checked each one for that) BT Hub 3's. This just isn't fixing our problem and seeing as their support just flat out doesn't care to send out an engineer to fix this I turn to you.
We've had this issue for over a year now, and it's infuriating as when it happens no wireless device can use the internet. Too note, we don't lose the wireless connection to the hub, oh no. But we lose the internet through it.
It's like an electrical capaciter reaching over it's limit, parts lose power then others come back on then they go off and others go on. It's like the wireless is being overloaded at these points in time and we cannot pin point it, because ther'es no pattern to it. It's all random..
If anyone can help, that would be amazing!
    -Chris.

if you have had a few replacement HH3s and still the same problem then it is unlikely all of the HHs have the exact same fault so maybe you need to look nearer to home in that there is something causing interference to your wifi signal
have you tried moving the router to a different location to see if that makes any difference?
